Claudia Gillespie was feeling nauseous in her social studies class at Waimea College this winter, she excused herself to head to the bathroom. There she collapsed and when she woke up she found she couldn’t

Fortunately, the 15-yearold was able to text a friend who alerted office staff. An ambulance took Claudia to hospital, along with her concerned parents. Over the next few days various tests were conducted and the family were told she suffered a functional weakness, which is caused by stress and can leave sufferers paralysed for several months.

For Claudia it was a scary time but she had one focus: to walk again. “It’s all I thought about really, I never thought that I wouldn’t be able to walk again.”

After three months working with the physiotherapists at Nelson Hospital, Claudia was desperate to return to school. She was given a wheelchair and made her way back to class. But some bullying, including losing some friends, threw even more challenges at her.

But a month later, with some innovative ideas from her physio, Claudia took

Donna Dunn loves Christmas and takes her Christmas decorating to the next level, displaying a huge collection of Christmas ornaments throughout her home. It’s a collection that’s taken several years to build up and is still being added to every year, including five different themed Christmas trees, around 10 large elves, multitudes of ornaments, soft toys, around 40 large and small soft Santa’s and even a huge inflatable Santa. Donna says her family has always had a love of Christmas. In fact, her father was one of the first people in Nelson to go all out decorating the outside of his home in Hope, which in past years was a popular place for families to visit in the lead-up to Christmas. her first steps in around four months at Nelson Hospital. “It was amazing,” says her dad Andrew. “They were really clever and came up with some great ideas to get her legs moving.

Slowly, but surely, she started to walk again.”

And it was slow.

At first, she could only shuffle along, then some uncoordinated, shaky steps, before eventually able to walk across the room by herself. Claudia says it felt great to be walking again. “My legs ached so much, they were so sore, but it did feel good to be able to get out of that wheelchair.”

Claudia and her parents contacted Nelson Weekly because she feels that without the help and support of the physiotherapists at Nelson Hospital, she wouldn’t be walking. Andrew says they

Copy Art’s Karyn Thomas is already planning her creation for next year’s Decorate2Win after the shop won the competition for the second consecutive year.

Karyn created two original, stylised Christmas trees for the annual Decorate2Win competition which is aimed at encouraging Richmond shops to brighten up their front windows for Christmas. Copy Art’s display was selected by a panel of 10 judges ahead of UniChem Richmond Mall Pharmacy’s display, with Aspire Women’s Health and Fitness selected as the People’s Choice Award.

Karyn says she wanted to decorate their shop window with a Kiwi Christmas-theme rather than the traditional Christmas display.

She decorated the trees with baubles made from samples of giclee prints produced in their graphic design and printing shop - the decorations featured over 1000 different works by artists.

Although Copy Art’s display won the competition, Karyn says the standard of this year’s entries was exceptionally high.

“I think we raised the bar when we won it last year because a lot of the other shops were really good this year,” Karyn says.

‘I have to work on Christmas Day’ Simon Bloomberg

Christmas Day is traditionally a time to relax with family and friends, exchange gifts, over indulge in ham, turkey and pavlova, and argue over which movie to watch on television.

But for a few people, December 25 will be just another day at the office. Many of these dedicated individuals are there to make sure we are all safe and sound, including Nelson Hospital Intensive Care and Coronary Care Unit nurse Jodi Miller.

Jodi, who has been nursing since 1992, says the worst thing about working on Christmas Day will be “that moment when you leave your family”. However, Jodi says “once you walk out the door and

change your mindset into work mode, it’s usually a great shift”.

“Before I had children, I’d choose to work Christmas mornings,” Jodi says. “But now I have three boys, all primary school age, so this year I’ve volunteered to work an afternoon because it suits the family.

“It’s always hard to drag yourself away. Your first priority is always your family, so it’s difficult.

“But once you get there it’s a great day because everyone is usually in good spirits. It’s usually jovial and we take special treats along for staff and have some fun.”

Jodi says she will wake up at 5.30am on Sunday and open presents with her family before heading out to Christmas lunch

with family and friends. Then she’ll go to work and “come back at 11.30 at night and see if they are still there”.

Senior sergeant Blair Hall has also worked his share of Christmas Days and says “it just goes with the territory when you are a front-line police officer”.

However, Blair concedes that spending most of Christmas Day working became harder once he married and had children.

“It’s never easy missing family events on Christmas Day but you always know well in advance if you are working and juggle things around your shift. It’s not so bad because, if you are on the early shift, you get to the family dinner and the guys on late shift have a family lunch before the

“We have 2500 to 3000 people in the camp over Christmas so we have to keep about 50 staff on over that period,” Marcel says.

“We usually get about 100 people arriving on Christmas Day and another 200 on Boxing Day, so there’s always a lot of preparation on Christmas Eve. “I’ll get up at 6am on Christmas Day and get into work at 7am, and then jump on the bike and do a round of the park to see if everything is in order.”

Although it’s busy, Marcel says it’s always enjoyable because the Christmas spirit is contagious and everyone is happy.

And after a lifetime of working in the hospitality industry, Marcel says working on Christmas Day is “just part of the game”.

School speed Jetstar boss flies into Chamber signs to be installed New 40kmh variable speed zones will be installed around Brightwater School in the next phase of school safety improvements by the Tasman District Council.

The flashing 40kmh signs will warn drivers to slow down at the start and end of the school day, and are likely to be installed in term one next year pending approval from the New Zealand Transport Agency.

In addition to the variable 40kmh zones for Brightwater, council plans to install electronic school warning signs at Richmond Primary School, as well as replacing and installing new static school warning signs at Upper Moutere, Tasman, Wakefield and Tapawera Area schools.

Engineering services committee chairman Stuart Bryant said the new speed zones and improved signage would help ease the concern of schools and parents about the safety of children travelling to and from school.

“The safety of our district’s school children is really important, and we’ve been working with the schools to identify the best ways to reduce the risks their students face on the way to and from school. Not all schools qualify for a variable 40kmh zone – NZTA has very specific criteria for that – but improved signage can make a difference also.”

In 2016, 40kmh variable speed zones were installed at Ranzau and Hope schools, along with static signs and other signage improvements at a further seven schools.

“The next phase of work will be to look at the schools in the vicinity of Salisbury Rd,” Stu says. “The project to improve signage complements the proactive work we do each year offering road safety education and training for schools, as well as the general public, to make our roads safer.”

Former Jetstar boss Grant Kerr has been appointed chief executive of the region’s Chamber of Commerce.

Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chair Lees Seymour announced the appointment on Monday.

Grant was most recently the head of Jetstar New Zealand and was the man behind the budget airline’s expansion to regional centres around New Zealand, including

Nelson.

He was also general manager of Air Nelson before his role at Jetstar, which he left in August.

Grant will replace the longserving Dot Kettle who left the post last month to focus on her own business interests.

Grant says he is looking forward to spending more time in Nelson.

“I wanted to commit myself to the Nelson and Tasman

region. My wife and I have lived here since ‘09 and we love it here, so when this role was advertised it really took my interest.”

He says he will consult with a range of members before seeing where he should concentrate his efforts in the job.

Lees says Grant “shone through” a very high calibre of applicants.

Grant takes up the role on February 7.

Garin’s top student overcomes barriers Simon Bloomberg Garin College’s Sotaro Kawada completed a remarkable transformation from school dropout to top of the class when he became the college’s first international student to be named dux at the school prize-giving last week.

When Sotaro arrived at Garin College in May 2012 from Japan he was depressed and could only speak three things in English, ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘I don’t know’. But the 19-year-old proved to be a fast learner, quickly becoming fluent in his new language which paved the way to his academic success.

“At first I just said ‘yes’ to everything because I only knew three words in English,” Sotaro says. “But my classmates soon realised I didn’t understand what they were saying and set me up - they’d say something really silly and I’d say ‘yes’ - it was very funny.

“But I soon learned how to speak English because I had to. It made it easier because everyone else was speaking it and I picked it up.”

Sotaro went on to achieve NCEA Level 1 with Merit, NCEA Level 2 with Excellence and Academic Colours and is on the way to receiving NCEA Level 3 with Excellence. He was awarded Distinction in statistics, physics, economics and the Tina Yun Cup in recognition of high achievement by an international student, Office Max Prize, Crest Commercial Cleaning Prize, Richmond Office Products Depot Prize and McKee Charitable Trust Prize.

He also made a significant contribution to the arts as a member of the college rock band Motion which won the regional Smokefreerockquest. Sotaro hopes to study management at either the London School of Economics or University College London next year.

Sotaro says playing in Smokefreerockquest was one of the highlights of his time at Garin. He also enjoyed “the amazing teachers and students” who, he says, “are the best in Nelson”.

Sotaro’s parents Osamu and Mariko Kawada says they are extremely proud of their son, not just for his academic achievements but also for overcoming so many challenges on the way.

“I was very concerned about him initially,” Osamu says. “But now we are very proud.”

ITM’s special worker retires Simon Bloomberg One of ITM Nelson’s most special employees got on his bike last week and rode out of the Pascoe St yard for the last time, signalling the end of more than 30 years of dedicated service to the building supply company.

In fact, Graham Dougherty, 70, has been working there so long nobody knows exactly when he started.

And Graham himself, who is special needs and was placed in the position by IHC, isn’t sure either, although ITM Nelson’s group sales manager and director Rodney Wolf thinks “it’s about 30 years”.

“When I came here in 1999, he was already here from the previous owner from 1992 and he was here before that, so it’s got to be close to 30 years,” Rod says.

“He tells everyone he’s only been here 25 years, but it’s longer than that.”

But what Rod does know is that Graham “is good at what he does - he’s a real toiler”.

“He’s been cutting and pointing pegs and cleaning up around the site - he has a place in our business. Some of the previous managers here have not been that keen on him because they

“He’s been doing what he has been doing for over 30 years and he’s very capable of operating machinery. He’s very accurate and meticulous and he’s safe it’s a shame the new health and safety laws have made it hard for special needs workers like Graham to find work.”

Site manager Dean Hamilton says Graham was well known

for inventing contraptions, including a stand for sweeping up rubbish and his own shelter for enjoying smoko outdoors.

He planted his own little vegetable garden on-site and “did a little dance when he got his pay cheque each week”.

Dean says Graham was also very dedicated and rarely missed a day in the last 20 years.

“I can only remember one day he didn’t arrive on time and we

got pretty worried - we thought he might have been knocked off his bike.

“So we went around to his place and we found him watching the Olympics on television - he was so excited by it he forgot about work.”

ITM purchased Graham a new commuter bike from Village Cycles and a 20-movie pass for his retirement present.

Local café has Disney moment Whoever says fairy tales don’t exist obviously hasn’t heard the story of Richmond’s very own Cinderella.

Once upon a last weekend, between 11pm and 1am, the front window of Village Café was kicked in, resulting in the unlucky culprit losing their shoe. “It was quite a high kick, you could see where the impact of it was and when we got there, we shone the torch around and there was the shoe sitting in there,” says cafe owner, Amber Warren. “There was still quite a bit of glass in the window, while a large portion of it was sticking out towards the pavement, so there was no way they could have gotten in if they wanted to because they would have cut themselves quite badly.”

Richmond Unlimited has been in contact with Amber to see whether their security cameras could be of help identifying the culprit.

“I think it was just a passing drunken karate kick that went pear shaped, it could have gone really bad though,” says Amber.

Amber and her staff are hoping for a fairy-tale ending to this latenight incident and say they’ll give their karate-kicking cinderella a free coffee if they bring back the other shoe or contact the Police.

Park packed out for Carols by Candlelight Christmas cheer was in the air at the Washbourn Garden’s Carols by Candlelight event on Sunday evening.

Several hundred people streamed into the garden armed with blankets, fold-out chairs and picnic baskets to hear their favourite Christmas tunes, despite dark weather looming on the horizon. Tasman District Council’s Lani Evans organised this year’s event which has has run for over 20 years and says the night went off without a hitch.

“The weather was a bit touch and go for a second there but we’re really happy with the number of people who came considering the threatening weather, so it was good to see those die hards come out.”

Lani says the best part of the whole night was the atmosphere, “everyone was smiling, the atmosphere was just really vibrant and all the kids got involved as well.”

With Wasbourn’s biggest tree lit

up, lights placed around the garden and candles dotted throughout the crowd at nightfall, the park created an enchanting setting.

Running a preshow from 6.30pm and the main event from 8pm, Wasbourn Gardens was filled with the sounds of Kramit, Soundz of Richmond, Kieran O’Connor and the Take A Chance Singers. Choir director Hilary Sinclair says the Take A Chance Singers ran through all the crowd favourites and had a great time performing.

“People were singing along nicely and it seemed like everyone in the park joined in for Jingle Bells and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.”

Hilary says the group of night class singers relish the chance to sing for the community and spread some festive spirit each Christmas.

“We always look forward to it, it’s a wonderful community event and a great way to end the year and start that final week before Christmas.”

For Christians, it is a time of preparation when we take time out from our usual routines and remember what we celebrate at Christmas.

Coming at the end of the year in the Southern Hemisphere we also have the advantage of being able to review our year before summer kicks in.

We call this time Advent, meaning “coming”. It is an expectant waiting for the coming, or the birth, of the Christ child. This time of anticipation helps us prepare for the wonder and miracle of Christmas.

I began thinking about this article on the day we remember Saint Nicholas. He was a church leader in the fourth century in Asia Minor, known for his kindness and generosity, particularly towards children.

He used to leave gifts in poor people’s homes, anonymously. Nicholas is his English name and in other languages he is known as Nicolaas, Nikolaus, Klaus etc, and hence ‘Santa Claus”.

Richmond recently held its Santa Parade, and it was good to see the enthusiasm and involvement of so many at this event. It all helps to make this a special time of year.

Work places have social functions and events, schools and colleges have ceremonies and prize-giving, families and friends get together – there can be a seemingly endless round of activities and things that we feel we need to attend or take part in.

All these can be good in themselves, provided they don’t distract us from the reason for all this celebration – the coming of God into our world, born as one of us, to live as one with us, to be with us through whatever life brings to us.

As we prepare for Christmas and review this past year, let us make room for prayer and open our hearts to the needs of others. Let us recall what might still be with us, like family tension, dysfunctional relationships, unhelpful habits, concern about work, finances or housing.

We miss those we love who have died. Let us also recall that while these hurts and fears don’t go away, the love of God shown as Jesus Christ is always with us.

Nelson’s Christmas wish list revealed Kate Russell What do Nelsonians want for Christmas? Well, according to Trade Me’s annual list of top ten Christmas searches for the Nelson Bays region, they want imaginary animals, sports gear and the good old kiwi classic – the trampoline.

The internet trading site has revealed that the most searched for item in Nelson during November was Hatchimals, followed by Nike, trampolines, Lego, iPhones, Adidas, Country Road/Karen Walker, puppies, Pokémon and PS4 (Playstation 4).

Viv Hitchcock, TOTSADL’s president says, “Our weekend began on Friday evening 2 December with a breathtaking demonstration of the art of ballroom dancing from Jonny and Kristie. On the Saturday we had

over 30 dance students from across Nelson, Richmond and Tasman dancing their feet off in front of an examiner from Wellington, as they took medal tests across all levels and styles.”

In the afternoon Jonny and Kristie returned to the floor making full use of the great facilities at Club Waimea to round off our dance weekend as they held a very successful and well attended dance workshop.

Waimea Toi Toi opener Tom Ingham's highest club score of 141 ensured there would be no upset in the Nelson 110-over club cricket final at Jubilee Park on Saturday.

Top qualifiers Waimea Toi Toi, who went unbeaten on their way to the title, beat Stoke Nayland by 49 runs.

The hosts bowled out the visitors for 221 in their pursuit of 270 for eight.

Tom's innings stood out, as no other player could get past 50 on the day.

Tom hit 16 fours and five sixes as he bludgeoned the Stoke-Nayland bowlers and raised his strike rate as his time at the crease went on.

“Jubilee is known for being a bit green, but I thought it played really well and I got a lot of confidence early.

“I always try to target back over the bowler's head as a place I can score.”

He did ride his luck at times and struggled to score regularly during the 80s and 90s

15 NZ Masters hockey reps Jacob Page Nelson hockey has 15 players who have been selected to represent New Zealand in May next year at the biennial trans-Tasman hockey Challenge Series against Australia.

All up, 13 New Zealand teams will do battle against Australia in Whangarei from May 2 to 6. Players will compete in a three test series across 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+ men’s and women’s age groups Trials were held at North Harbour Stadium recently with over 350 players showing their wares across both trial days.

In the Womens 35 grade, Nelson will be represented by Jay Sigley and Diane Webb who were both involved in the winning New Zealand team in Melbourne in 2015.

In the Womens 40s grade, Karen Eden will be back representing her country, along with first-time representative Jackie Day who only took up playing in goal again last year after a 10 year break.

In the men’s grades, Jaron Steffens will be involved in his second endeavour with the New Zealand team after coming back with a bronze from the World Cup held earlier this year in Canberra.

Gene Cooper and Mark Gibbons

will once again be involved in the men’s 45 grade.

Both these experienced players will be pivotal in the team’s plans if they are to take the gold medal in May 2017.

Veterans Craig Brett, Brett Butcher and Nick Perrott will be joined by Mike Gafa who is moving up from the 45 men into the men’s 50 grade, These players have amassed over 300 international games between them.

They will be joined by new-comer Craig Mant who has also been named as a non-travelling reserve in the team.

Tim Brenton and Jimmy Mathews will be involved in the Men’s 60+ grade, along with Gary Wilson also being a non-travelling reserve for the team.

All the New Zealand players will now be involved in a busy four month training programme, which will also involve Nelson's younger High Performance players striving for places in the Capital Hockey age-group teams which will be selected early next year. The Master players will be helping out in a new mentoring programme set up recently at Nelson Hockey and will be wanting the young Nelson players to push themselves to achieve their goals in 2017.

Club Champs loom Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway fires back into action after Christmas with its Club Championship meeting on December 27.

It is the last meeting for Shane Harwood to run the 1nz on his car, as he defends his national title in Palmerston North the following week.

For many of the drivers, it will be the last meeting to get the car sorted before heading away for their respective New Zealand title meetings.

Ian Burson will be travelling to Cromwell to compete for the Super Saloon Title.

Ian is a strong chance for a podi-

um finish while Mark Carey and Dave Manera will also be competing.

Michael Paynter, Adam Hall and Tim Ross head to Kihikihi for the Stock Car Title decider, while most of the super stocks will be heading to Palmerston North to compete with Shane.

The midgets have been thin on the ground lately, but with the New Zealand Title not too far away there could be visitors turning up to get familiar with the track before the serious racing begins and titles are handed out.

It’s the peak time of the season with many of the New Zealand championships decided over the next month; hopefully Nelson drivers can feature in the results.

A: If a bank has asked for a guarantee, it may

indicate that they consider the loan to be risky.

If you are a guarantor, you will be required to pay all the debt if you son fails to pay. I recommend that you get independent legal advice. Guarantor agreements are complex and include important clauses that you should fully understand the meaning of.

Some common clauses include:  The guarantor’s assets (eg. a house) are used as security for the debt. If the debt is not paid, the bank can sell the guarantor’s assets to recover the money owed.  Guarantors are also liable for any future borrowing such as penalties, interest or over-drafts in relation to the original debt or even new loans.  Guarantors may be called upon to immediately pay the outstanding debt in full.  Guarantors are not entitled to know anything about the lenders dealings with the bank, even if they are behind in their payments.

If you decide to go ahead with the guarantee, ask your lawyer how you can minimise your risk. You could say ‘no’ to being a guarantor and consider other ways that you might help your son.

Photographer earns top award and good fortune.

"There is a lot of luck involved, but you need to understand the sport and try to anticipate where the play is going. Some sports are easier to do that with like rugby, cricket and soccer," he says.

"But you have to do the hard yards."

Chris says while breaking into photography can be challenging, he hoped his award would show people that even if you live in a small town, you can make an impact. "It's proof that if you work hard enough you can achieve things."

Local sports photographer Chris Symes has won the Best Single Sports Photo at the TP McLean Sports Journalism Awards in Auckland.

Chris, who is contracted by the Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and nelsonlive.co.nz through Shuttersport, won the award with a photograph of a rippa rugby game at the Motueka Sports Grounds in May. In the photograph, a Huia player shows his joy in tagging a Waimea Old Boys girl, after a hot pursuit.

“I saw the wee girl take off across the field and the boy chased her for a fair while, like 15 to 20m, and then he reached out and ripped her tag and I was able to capture his face, which was priceless.”

Chris says the win is something he had wanted for a number of years.

“I’m over the moon – this is my third go at trying to win the TP McLean so to have achieved it is a great feeling.”

Chris has spent more than 20 years taking sports photos after getting his first image published at 23.

He has gone on to regularly photograph All Blacks' tests, Black

Caps' matches and Wellington Phoenix games over the years.

"One of the best things was photographing Lydia Ko at Clearwater in Christchurch, everyone realised she was on the way up."

Chris says his favourite sport to photograph is tennis because his

mum used to play it and he likes the action shots. "The mix between the ball, the racquet and the facial expressions is always good, or capturing that moment when someone hits a winner."

He says taking a great sports photo comes down to preparation

Building Inspections in December and January

Navigation Safety Bylaw

Building Inspections are available up to 22 December and will resume on the 5 January 2017.

No inspections will be available between these dates.

It is also important to know the official processing clock we adhere to will be stopped on 20 December and will not start until the 10 January 2017.

Text Confirmation for Final Inspections From 1 December 2016 we will be confirming your final inspection booking through text message.

Final Inspection for (number and address) is booked for (date and AM/PM). If you require any changes, Ph. 03 5438400.

The Inspector completing the Final Inspection will still confirm approximate time by calling the night before.

If they are unable to contact you, they will leave a voice message or send another text.

Temporary reservations and speed limit uplifting for maritime events between 11 November 2016 and 2 April 2017. Pursuant to provisions of the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2015, the Tasman District Council Harbourmaster has (or may soon) grant authorisations for the following known events during the upcoming holiday period. Other events may also occur during this time but the Harbourmaster has not yet received further applications.

Free dog microchipping We’re offering free microchipping for all dogs registered in Tasman District. Microchipping is a legal requirement for most dogs and is the best way to reunite lost, injured or stolen pets with their owners.

The new Special Grants Fund, designed to encourage and support significant new events or projects within Tasman District, is now open for applications.

The fund allows us to provide a larger financial contribution (upwards of $10,000) to special events that will benefit our community, providing a range of opportunities and experiences to residents and visitors. Up to $50,000 will be available each year, providing we make a surplus as a result of extra growth throughout the District. In years where there is no surplus, Special Grants funding will not be offered.

Summer Events Guide out now Find out what’s on in the Nelson Tasman region this summer – pick up a copy of the Summer Events Guide 2016 –17 at Council offices, libraries, visitor information centres or download a copy from our website: www.tasman.govt.nz/events.

Register for the Big Beach Clean Organisations and individuals are invited to register now for the Nelson Tasman Big Beach Clean, scheduled for Saturday 4 March 2017 to coincide with Seaweek.

Register before 21 December on the Department of Conservation website – www.doc.govt.nz (search for “Big Beach Clean” under Regional Events). Sites will be allocated in January, rather than on the first-come, first-served basis used in previous years.

At the last Big Beach Clean in November 2014, more than 350 volunteers collected close to four tonnes of rubbish from approximately 300 kilometres of coast between Tonga Island and Pepin Island.

Mark Townsend, DOC Operations Manager Motueka, says: “The enthusiasm from the community in previous years has been inspiring. The amount of rubbish collected has decreased since the first Big Beach Clean in 2010, when 10.5 tonnes was collected.”

The event is organised by DOC in partnership with Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Nelmac.

Saturday 7 January – Sunday 22 January 2017 The Tasman Skatepark Tour returns to the region this summer, showcasing the best talent on skateboards, BMX bikes and scooters. Skate, BMX and scooter competitions are split into junior (5 – 11 yrs), senior (12 – 17 yrs) and open (18+ yrs) categories.

The tour’s championship leaderboard has riders across all ages and disciplines competing for competition points from placing at each heat. Accompanying the smoking hot thrills and spills of the park will be bass pumping, toe tapping tunes from the regions finest youth DJs. The Tasman Skatepark Tour is a free community event with entries taken on the day. Helmets are compulsory for all competitors entering the competition.
