The backers of a proposed motorsports and adventure park near Tapawera are holding a meeting in Nelson next month to present their plans for the park and form a working group to "facilitate the project". The New Zealand Central Motorsports and Adventure Park was granted resource management planning permission by the Environment Court last month. The park will be constructed on a 203 hectare property at Stanley Brook owned by Nelson motorsport enthusiast Garry Adcock who initiated the project with his former business partner Gary Donaldson in 2011. New project manager Dave McLeod says the next step is to form a group to start the second stage of the project. Dave says they have already been approached by a number of people interested in being involved in the park's development and will form a working group or committee after next month's meeting.

"The project has been in the planning stages for a long time but we haven't been comfortable about going out and seeking support until we got the resource consent," Dave says. "Now we have that it's time to take that next step." Dave says the key to the venture's success will be to develop a site that caters for a wide range of activities. Although the park will be centred around a complex of motorsport tracks and facilities it will also include a conference centre, accommodation, camping ground, mountainbike park and tracks, commercial premises and a variety of recreational activities. Dave says Nelson motorsport groups are very supportive of the concept because it will provide them with a permanent head-

It was the first time the award has been given to a couple and the Thawleys say it was a huge shock,

for their two acre home in Mahana and its extensive rose garden. Letty was the first to get into the hobby, attending a rose society meeting with Norm’s aunt in early 1962. The second meeting she attended, Letty was voted on to the committee and has been there ever since. Norm soon became an expert grower and was known for tending to the rose gardens outside the Mapua Public Hall and RSA hall in Mapua. Letty says one of the more humorous moments for her was when a friend invited her to a rose society show in Nelson at late notice. “It was quite late in the afternoon

when he asked me so I just picked one single rose out of our garden. He picked me up and the boot and back seat of his car were chocka with roses that he’d spent all day preparing. “My rose won the convention cup and all of his roses didn’t get anywhere. I couldn’t believe it and that really got me going on more competitions.” Letty and Norm have moved off their two acre section to a much smaller home in Summerset Village in Stoke. They say they’re still keen to make their mark with roses. “At our old home in Mahana we had 300 roses, the whole range of them. We haven’t got many here yet but I intend to do something about that,” smiled Letty.

Tapawera on cusp of motorsport park SEE PAGE 2 quarters. Many of the groups are struggling to find suitable venues to hold their events and the Tapawera park will be an ideal solution. "Quite of few of the motorsport guys, like the drags, have nowhere to go and they are super-keen to see this go ahead," Dave says. "But it also needs to be a hub for recreational activities - we need things that will attract people to the park during the week and at this stage we have an open mind about what we will put there." Dave says the project had initially been estimated to cost around $26 million, although the final figure

is likely to be considerably less because they could make significant savings on constructing the sealed racing circuit. One of the first tasks of the working group will be to determine what stages of the development need funding and how to raise the funds. "We thought it would cost around $12 to $14 million to build the track and then we found out the Cromwell track only cost $4 million. They saved a lot of money by doing the preliminary earthworks themselves so we can probably do the same thing." The meeting will be held at the Honest Lawyer on June 26 starting at 7pm. Anyone interested in the project is welcome to attend.

Man escapes house fire A 73 year old man lost his home after it caught fire on Monday evening, but he managed to escape with just minor injuries. The man was found in the backyard of his Main Rd Stoke home by an off duty paramedic and was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor burns and the smoke inhalation. He also had singed hair. It is unknown how the fire started, but a full investigation was to begin yesterday. At the scene, Nelson station officer Darren Shackleton confirmed the man was alone at

the time, and that he had received “some facial burns”. “He’s being treated in an ambulance now on site,” says Darren. “He’s got a bit of smoke inhalation so he’s wheezing.” Darren says the internal damage was “quite significant”. The fire service was called out around 4:20pm when the house was fully ablaze. “There were flames coming out of the windows. But it was controlled very quickly, in about 20

minutes.” The house is situated right next to Saxton Lodge and there was a danger that the fire could have spread. “Potentially, but it was well contained, particularly on this side.” Several members of the public reported the house fire and Darren says that was a good message. “The more 111 calls we receive the [higher] chance we know it’s a proper working job.” Main Rd Stoke was closed between Polstead Rd and Saxton Rd during the fire, which meant traffic had to be diverted.

Bands hit the stage for Rockquest With young musical talent belting out well-crafted original tunes for three hours on Friday night, it seemed like the judges might have had a hard time finding ten finalists for the Smokefreerockquest regional finals. In years gone by, a clear front runner generally emerges from the heats, but a new solo/duo format and a record number of entries meant that simply wasn’t the case this year. Thirty acts representing every secondary school from Nelson through to Golden Bay took part in the 26th year of Smokefreerockquest, with alt-pop synths, death-core howls, soulful vocals and mind-melting guitar solos giving the sold-out Theatre Royal audience an array of entertainment. Ryan Beehre of Minuit had the tough task of picking tens bands from the heats to come back for this Friday night’s final, but deciding just two solo/duo acts to join them was always going to leave more agony than joy. Last year’s solo/duo winner Livvy and Anna, who this year went under the name ELAE, were the biggest omission as Garin College’s Gabriella Atkinson and Nelson College for Girls’ Zi Shaw claimed the two spots and will now play

VINYL RECORD SALE A SUCCESS: Rotary Club of Nelson’s Giant Vinyl Sale was a big success, raising $2000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The idea for the sale came about when a member of the rotary club was given an estate lot of records. Police recover nearly $200k worth of fines

Nelson Police have recovered nearly $200,000 worth of fines and reparations. A three day operation, called Operation Country Roads 2, focused on drink driving and the collection of outstanding fines and reparations owed to victims of crime. Between Friday and Sunday, police and bailiffs visited about 100 Nelson and Tasman addresses in an attempt to locate people with outstanding fines and reparation owing. Bailiffs seized 11 vehicles and a range of property including cash, Xbox, cameras, guitars, cell phone, a TV and other personal assets. The total collected was $196,206, with $30,960 of that being reparations owed to victims. The operation was part of an ongoing initiative between police and the Ministry of Justice and was the second joint operation in six weeks. Senior sergeant Grant Andrews says people need to be aware that if they left fines or reparations unpaid there was a very real risk they would have other property seized in lieu of that payment. As a result of the operation six people will also be facing drink driving charges. Grant says police were disappointed at the high level of intoxication of these drivers with the majority exceeding 800mg/l of alcohol, double the legal limit, and still choosing to drive. One of these drivers was involved in a non-injury crash at Motueka.

Husband and wife off to Comm Games

Shannon Mcilroy reckons he plays pretty well if his wife Amy is watching, so her inclusion in the New Zealand lawn bowls squad for the Commonwealth Games might just be his secret advantage. “I always look over and she does a sign or starts giggling. She’ll do something to make me get an extra five or ten per cent,” he says. Both Shannon and Amy will be competing in Glasgow, the first time the husband and wife duo have gone together to a major event, after Mr Mcilroy represented New Zealand in Delhi in 2010. “It’ll be pretty cool if I’m playing on a green and Amy is playing on the other and I can look over and see how things are going.” Coach Dave Edwards sat the pair down at the same time when announcing the team for Glasgow, and Shannon and Amy say that was the biggest giveaway that they would both be going. “Well it was either we’re both going or neither of us are,” says Amy. She says it seems “unreal” considering they both met through lawn bowls years ago. “Now we’re married and going to the Commonwealth Games, I did not picture that happening at all.” Shannon, who plays for the Stoke Bowling Club, has been selected in the singles and triples. At 23 years old she is the “old duck” in the triples, and will play alongside Nelson’s Val Smith in the fours. When asked what she was looking forward to most in Glasgow, Amy says she just wants to make

her family proud, and would be thinking of her late uncle and poppa when competing. “I just want to make everyone proud, perform well and if the outcome is a gold, silver or bronze medal then that’s a bonus.” She also wants to help inspire the children at the pre-school where she works in Richmond. “I want to show them that anything you set your mind to you can achieve.”

Fire fighter raises $13,000 for charity Volunteer firefighter Mark Janssen achieved his goal of improving his time in the Sky Tower Stair Challenge in Auckland on Saturday, racing up 51 floors and 1103 stairs wearing 25 kilograms of fire fighting equipment in 13 minutes 19 seconds. That was almost two minutes faster than the last time he completed the challenge, which is a fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, in 2011. Mark was one of 700 firefighters from around New Zealand and Australia to compete in Saturday’s event, which is aiming to raise $1 million for the charity. Mark, who works in Richmond, says he recorded a faster time because he trained a lot harder and, with the help of ASB Aquatic and Fitness centre trainer Andrew Kennedy, a lot smarter, for this year’s event. But Mark concedes no amount of training could prepare him for the 13 minutes and 19 seconds of leg and lung-burning agony he endured on Saturday. “I’ve been training with Andrew since February and he’s been pushing me really hard. I’ve been doing beach training, interval training and running up stairs but that was nothing compared to racing up the Sky Tower - I

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz was absolutely ruined,” Mark says. Although Mark finished over three minutes behind the winner of the masters section, Melbourne’s Scott McGraw, and more than four minutes behind overall winner Otara’s John Harrison, who clocked 8 minutes 36 seconds, he received plenty of accolades for being the top fundraiser. Mark says he had amazing support from businesses and individuals around the Nelson-Tasman region and on the West Coast and that helped him raise $13,208 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Mark’s efforts were recognised at the awards function held in Sky City on Saturday night when he was presented with a trophy. “I just want to say a huge thanks to everyone who was part of the Nelson fundraising campaign. To be awarded the trophy for raising the most funds was amazing but the trophy doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to the Nelson community. “Everyone who I approached was so posi-

tive and generous. Total Oil, Hydraulink and Ewing Poultry were really generous but so many more gave $100 or $200 or whatever they could.” Mark says he also received great support from his partner Nyanne Graf and the Nelson and Mapua fire brigades. Nyanne, a former member of the Mapua Voluntary Fire Brigade, often trained with Mark while the Mapua brigade’s deputy chief, Alby Wyatt, helped arrange donations. Mark says another highlight of the weekend was meeting three young cancer sufferers for a photo shoot at the Auckland Fire Station. The photo will go on the back of the next Firefighters’ Calendar which is a fundraiser for Child Cancer. “I was selected for this year’s Firefighters’ Calendar and they gave all of us some of the proceeds to use to travel to competitions like the Sky Tower Challenge. But I gave all the money to Child Cancer and when we finished the photo shoot the youngest boy came up to me and hugged my leg and said thanks - it was so emotional.” Mark is keen to have a third attempt at the Sky Tower Stair Challenge and also wants to try and organise a Tasman team.

Tapawera neighbours claim awards at art comp Two Tapawera neighbours, Emma Panting and Lisa White, had a big night at the prestigious Marlborough Art Society Peters Doig Awards in Blenheim on Saturday, winning two of the six awards. Lisa won the Supreme Award and prize of $3000 for her oil painting of her mother Mary Devries from Canada, titled The Artist's Mother, while Emma won the Seymour Picture Framing Award for her graphite and acrylic on linen study Finding Solace. Artists from around New Zealand had applied to enter the awards, sending photographed copies of the works to a three-member judging panel for selection. Only 150 entries were accepted, with Lisa and Emma winning two of the five awards available to artists outside

Marlborough. "I've entered the awards four times now and only had my entries accepted twice so I was just happy to have it in there. It's a national award so it's easily my biggest award yet it was very exciting and very unexpected," Lisa says Lisa says she painted the portrait when her mother was in New Zealand for Christmas in 2013. "When I finished I was a bit nervous about it and didn't want to show it to her but she really liked it. My sister and I Facetimed her right away to say that the portrait had won the award." Wood burners for Nelson: NO! For several reasons, I don’t think they should. I can understand that people want to be able to choose, how-

ever we went through the council imposed process a few years ago. Took out a perfectly good fire and followed all the rules... at our cost! We will be paying it back at $90 a quarter in our rates, for another seven years! We burn dry wood and our previous fire did not smoke as much as most, even before we changed. I note a comment by Tristan Fish in this week’s Waimea Weekly, re loading up the fire. It’s burning habits such as these that caused the pollution problem in the first place. It also sounds like he’s burning green wood. Yes, the fires burn differently, that’s the point. I would rather see the council consider subsidising HRV, solar heating and retrofit double-glazing then put any more money and effort into this issue. If the rules are relaxed, there will be a lot of ratepayers who were forced to go through a process that they are still paying for who may demand some compensation. F Watts. In the Men’s Singles, Alan Smolenski and Doug George made it to the semi-finals while Bob Wren and Zane Thomas made it to the semi final in the men’s plate round. Mixed Pair, Alan Smolenski and Tai Williams made it to final where they finished in second place and Men’s Pair, Stan Reid and Dean Robinson came second in the plate round. The Club Waimea darts team enjoyed great success during the tournament and we all had a great time in Hokitika. Everybody that went played well and really enjoyed themselves. Next year the Seddon Shield will be held at home at Waimea and will be a great event to host and be a part of.

Taste of history for Rally competitors From Model T’s to American muscle and just about everything in between. These were the choice of rides for the 16 crews that tackled this year’s Club Waimea Novelty Car Rally. While the V8 powered machinery may have been superior in the uphill sections of the course, slow and steady was the order of the day when the results were finally tallied. After five years of gentle country jaunts, a change of tack by the organisers saw com-

petitors navigating their way over a course that took in Tahunanui, the Port Hills, and the environs in and around Nelson City. In the process, crews were treated to what was essentially a history lesson as they visited many of the historical spots that are a huge part of the make-up of the city such as Bishops School, the Dun Mountain Railway and the site of New Zealand’s first rugby match. Add to that historical homes, cemeteries and historically listed trees and build-

ings, giving competitors an insight into the city’s history. To add to the confusion not all questions that were to be answered on route, 60 in total, were of a historic nature; the organiser throwing in numerous cryptic questions to further test crew’s brain power. With the course covering less than 62 km, time proved to be more of a factor than distance, particularly as it crisscrossed itself often not to mention the complex nature of the instructions, especially in and around

Despite this and the threat of pending divorce proceedings in some cases, crew’s admitted to a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s fun, most promising to return next year in an effort to outwit the organiser’s obviously warped brain. Alzheimer’s Society raise $1600

A Mother’s Day High Tea at the Boathouse Cafe has helped raise about $1600 for the Alzheimer’s Society of Nelson but organisers say they need more funds to keep providing their services around the Nelson-Tasman region. One in three New Zealanders are affected by some form of dementia and it invariably has a big impact on their family and friends. Alzheimer’s Society of Nelson receives Ministry of Health funding but still needs an additional $80,000 to help cover the cost of employing three fieldworkers and provide a range services to support people afflicted by the disease and their carers. One of the organisers of the High Tea, Aileen

Rodley says Alzheimer’s Society of Nelson is fortunate to have a dedicated band of about 40 volunteers to help out the field workers. Many of them have more than 20 years of service including Olive Jeffries who has been helping out for 25 years. “We do it because we like helping people and we know we make a difference,” Olive says. “But it can be hard at times because you often get emotionally attached to the families you are helping.” Jill McKnight says they couldn’t operate successfully without their volunteers. They also received great support from the community. Jill says anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can contact the society’s Nelson office on 546 7704.

Just a thought...

Retro Fit Double Glazing

By Steve Rollo, Richmond Church of Christ. Last week my wife and I joined several hundred proud parents, grandparents, partners and friends watching graduating Victoria Uni students parade down the main street of Wellington. Followed by their graduation ceremony and receiving their hard earned degrees. You could debate who had the biggest smile, the students marching in their hired graduation gowns, or the proud parents and supporters watching. No debate from me, I was proud of my son with his two degrees. During the graduation ceremony one of the speakers congratulated the students then said, “now you are just a small fish in a big ocean”. Was that an encouraging statement? I thought it was unfair on students who studied hard. Many like our son were already working in their chosen field, while others are looking for that dream job. The goal of many is to make a difference in this world, some for themselves and their families, while some dream of being that famous person that becomes mentioned in history. But what really counts in life ? The bible tells us that we can speak with eloquence, we can have great faith, even if we give away all we have but do not have love we are nothing. The bible also teaches what real love is, and that God’s love is a free gift that leads to eternal life.

Add value, quieten your home, keep in the heat and save money. All using your existing wooden or aluminium doors and windows. You will be surprised how cost effective it is.

Visitors to Stoke possibly wonder just how the locality came to receive its name and why roads came to be called Nayland Road, Polstead Road, Songer Street and, a little further afield, Torlesse Street. The name of Stoke was given by William Songer who was the first settler here. He came from Stoke-by-Nayland in Suffolk (in the sheep country of East Anglia). Polstead was a nearby village. When the New Zealand Company’s Second Settlement (Nelson) Expedition ships were leaving England the farewell sermon was preached by the Vicar of Stoke-by-Nayland, the Rev. C. M. Torlesse. Charles Torlesse, brother of Harriet Bridges, went to Stoke in 1823. His wife, Catherine Gurney (born 1793), was the eldest child of Edward Wakefield and so was a sister of the Wakefields who founded the New Zealand Company settlements. Their eldest son, also Charles, came out with the Nelson Expedition and later was a surveyor, more notably in Canterbury. William Songer who had been the gardener at Stoke-by-Nayland came out as a personal attendant upon Captain Wakefield, while his wife, who had been the nurse who brought up (he Torlesse family, came out as a matron on one of the emigrant ships. Mrs Torlesse owned land in New Zealand which was cared for by Songer and she used to send out seeds for him to plant. It is reasonable to believe that some of the old trees in the area owe their origin to this source.

Wakefield Health Centre Dr Audrey Vickerman is retiring from 40 years of working in General Practice at the end of May 2014. Audrey has been a partner of the Wakefield Health Centre for the last 20 years, having bought Dr Ted Bassett’s share in June 1994. When Audrey joined the Health Centre she brought a whole new dimension to a male dominated practice. She was welcomed by both female and male patients. Audrey has huge experience in women’s health and this has been a real asset to Wakefield. There have been many changes in the health sector and Wakefield Health Centre during these 20 years. A big change has been the introduction of computers for all forms of the day to day recording of patient contacts, and recording of patient health problems. Also the Health Centre has become Cornerstone Accredited, to Royal NZ Col-

lege of GP standards, and a teaching practice for trainee interns, GP registrars, house surgeons and nursing students. Audrey freely admits that at times she has been challenged, stimulated, saddened and delighted. The Health Centre will miss Audrey’s knowledge, compassion and understanding, like many of her patients. We wish her the very best for her future leisure time and know she has many plans and will enjoy time with her husband and family. Volunteer Fire Brigade honours Geoff Shearer Fritz Buckendahl Chief Fire Officer The Wakefield Volunteer Fire Brigade has recently celebrated Geoff Shearer’s Gold Star award at the Wakefield village hall. Geoff has spent 25 years volunteering with the New Zealand Fire Service and this award is generally the pinnacle of achievement for most brigade members. Once you join a brigade, the first recognition received is the three year certificate. After five years service you receive a silver medal. Thereafter, for every two years service you receive a silver bar that goes with your silver medal. At twenty five years of service you receive the gold star medal and a gold bar is awarded for every two years that you serve from then on. It is a very small reward for all the hours of training the members put in each week, each year, as well as going to the calls-outs rain or shine and at all times day or night. However every brigade member gets great satisfaction when they have been able to help a member of the public.

Muscular Dystrophy Fundraiser Last term Liam Berry, a year 6 student, organised an exciting and original fundraising event at Wakefield School to raise awareness about a medical condition called Muscular Dystrophy. Liam was diagnosed with this medical condition when he was six. He says he used to be able to run but now he can only walk and needs his wheelchair more.

Students from Wakefield school paid $2 to enjoy mouth-watering sausages. They also had a wheels day and got to use their bikes, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades in a fun way. It was a great success. “We raised about $800. Everyone at Wakefield school enjoyed their day, especially me,” says Liam.

New Modern Learning Environment Classrooms Jessie Black (Year 5) and Abby Simpson (Year 6) Throughout the school holidays, builders have been working very hard on Rooms 1 and 2 at Wakefield School to transform them into an amazing modern learning environment for the Tahi Totara Syndicate. The building looks amazing. It is enormous, bright, modern, spa-

cious with a beautiful deck round the back and very different from the old classrooms. The students and teachers are loving it. There will be an opening day for the new classrooms on 23 May. Parents and community are invited to come and look around the amazing 21st century classrooms.

The only thing for certain in this month’s Taylor Timbers Waimea Golf Championships at Greenacres is that there will be at least one new champion by the end of the 36-hole tournament. Defending men’s champion, Greenacres’ Ryan Chisnall and Tasman No1, Takaka’s Blair Riordan will be en route to Mexico where they are playing in the Mexican Amateur stroke play champs. That leaves the way clear for the next tier of mens players to contest the top honours at Greenacres biggest tournament of the year. Under the CGA, goods must be of acceptable quality. This means goods must be: fit for their normal purpose safe durable - last for a reasonable time have no minor defects acceptable in look and finish Ask what extra cover you are going to get if you purchase the warranty. Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Club day a success, on and off the pitch Super Rugby players Billy Guyton, James Lowe and Marty Banks were on hand for Waimea Old Boys’ club day, inspiring the division one side to an important 23-17 win over Nelson, and also signing autographs for junior players in the morning. The presence of their three stars was a huge boost for the club and gave the JAB players an in-sight into where rugby can take them with talent and hard work. James showed his class scoring a second half try, while Marty booted six penalties, as Star & Garter Waimea claimed the Noel Barton Trophy and the all important four competition points. Waimea are now sitting in seventh place on the Bayleys Tasman Trophy standings with a two win/two loss record, and are in fourth place in the Car Company division one championship, just two points behind second place Marist. Waimea will now travel to Blenheim on Saturday to take on Moutere. In other results from club day Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys beat Nelson 46-5 in their division two match, the Waimea Old Boys women’s team beat Stoke 49-12 and lost to Marist 22-12 in their ten-a-side games, and the Under-18 Waimea College Old Boys beat Moutere 24-17.
