Hard line taken on litter bugs Phillip Rollo
Fed up with finding dead animals and household rubbish dumped near riverbanks, council is taking a hard line approach on the region’s worst litter bugs. Ratepayers are forking out up to $10,000 a year to cover clean up costs for illegal dumpings, which occur “at least once a week” near Tasman’s riverbeds and forestry roads. Members of the general public are taking trailer loads of household rubbish and leaving them near rivers, thinking they are out of sight. Dumping rubbish in public areas is illegal under the Litter Act. Tasman District Council asset utilities engineer David Stephenson says there will be no more warnings and those caught could be slapped with an instant $400 fine. If the material is dangerous or causing “significant” environmental
harm then fines can be much larger. “If we’ve got enough information to fine or to prosecute than that’s where we will go,” he says. “It’s not worthwhile giving out warnings anymore.” It has even got to the point where security cameras and patrol staff have been “considered” by council. They are also hoping members of the public will tip them off if they see people driving to the river with a trailer full of rubbish. “It’s one of the options we are looking at at the moment, putting security cameras up. But the best patrol is if anyone sees anything suspicious.” David says “messy” dead animals are common, while old fridges filled with rubbish, green waste and unregistered or stolen vehicles are also regularly dumped. “People think it’s not such a big issue dumping green waste but it’s got its SEE PAGE 3
