Richmond gets new microbrewery The owners of a successful US beer brewing company, who have settled in Nelson, are opening a new microbrewery and pizza restaurant on Champion Rd that will employ up to 30 staff when it opens later this year. Mic and Molley Heynekamp started brewing beer commercially in 1999 when they founded the Socorro Springs Brewing

Company in New Mexico, later moving to Buena Vista in Colorado to set up the successful Eddyline Brewery in 2009. But after falling in love with New Zealand during a “vacation” the Heynekamps decided to move here with their children and set up an Eddyline brewpub and wood-fired pizza restaurant in Nelson. Fruit trees for local kindy kids Kindy kids will have all the fresh fruit they can eat after Brightwater-based gardener Graham Smith launched a scheme to plant fruit trees in all 19 kindergartens throughout Nelson and Tasman. Graham from Garden Property Services has teamed up with Waimea Nurseries and Green Waste To Zero for the scheme which aims to plant four fruit trees - a plum, apple, feijoa and mandarin - in kindies from Nelson, Tasman and Takaka. Graham is providing his labour for free with Waimea Nurseries donating 76 trees and Green Waste Zero supplying the compost. Graham says he initiated the project because he has two young children of own and has “seen firsthand” the sugar-filled lunch boxes kids are bringing to kindergarten. “I felt the need to do something about it. Our mission is to try and shape the health and well-being of current and future generations of children by providing better access to fresh fruits and vegetables.” Graham approached the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association chief executive

“Yeah I do. Nothing in particular, I just do it.”

“Yes we do, we have a small house and we only have one, it beeps when the batteries going low so it kind of tells us.”

“We just shifted house, we’ve always had working smoke alarms. This house has got one but I haven’t climbed up to look at the battery yet. We just moved in two weeks ago.”

Fruit trees for local kindy kids FROM PAGE 1 Trish Casey with his idea, and before long it was “all go,” with the planting kicking off last week at Victory Square Kindergarten. On Monday, he was planting trees at kindergartens around Richmond and Brightwater where all the children helped dig the holes for the trees. “We hope to educate them in the process from the start, and when they are established they will have the freedom of choice to pick fresh fruit,” Graham says. “Fruit can be quite expensive at times, so this should also give the kindergartens an opportunity to provide fresh fruit to kids throughout the year.” Brightwater kindy’s Leanne Rod-

man says “it’s a fantastic idea” and one that fits with their status as a Silver Award Enviroschool. “We really support sustainability,” Leanne says. “We already have a garden and two fruit trees, so this will add to that.” Kate Marshall says Waimea Nurseries is excited about backing the project. “We donate trees all the time. In the scheme of things it’s not many trees for us, but it will make such a big difference to the kindergartens.” Graham says the project will take around 60 hours to complete and he’ll “just work it around my jobs”. “We’re doing it for the kids - it’s about time we gave something back to the community.”

Mic says they will be brewing some of Eddyline’s popular beers in the complex but he also wants to develop some new brews using Nelson hops that will be unique to the region.

Eddyline will serve “casual gourmet food” including wood-fired pizzas in a familyfriendly environment. Mic says the company’s name, Eddyline, was chosen because the brewbar was located in a popular white water rafting area and provided a resting

place for rafters and kayakers. Many of their brews have an outdoor theme with names like River Runners Pale Ale and Crank Yanker IPA. Mic is hoping the business will be open by November. It will operate from 10am to 10pm seven days a week.

The Tasman district’s new $2.2million recycling plant was only officially opened last Thursday but already staff are getting ready to handle a bigger workload. The Beach Rd plant is processing about 50 tonnes of paper, cardboard, plastic, tin, aluminium and glass a week. But that is soon expected to increase by five to 10 tonnes a week with the new bins and collection service making recycling more user-friendly. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says increasing the amount of recycling is good for council’s finances as well as the environment. “It will mean we will reduce our demand for landfill space and these improvements have been provided at no extra charge to residents,” he says. Richard also suggested the plant could be used as a regional facility and process Nelson City Council’s recycling. “It’s big enough to be a regional facility and it makes sense,” Richard says. “Hopefully we can have a discussion with Nelson about that.”

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Council engineering services manager Peter Thomson says upgrading the district’s recycling services was a joint project between council and recycling contractors Smart Environmental. Council funded construction of the new $1.4 million building while Smart Environmental invested around $4 million in collection trucks, plastic bins and the sorting plant. Smart Environmental managing director Grahame Christian says they operate a number of material recovery facilities around the country, including one that serviced three differ-

ent councils. He says the Tasman facility can process two tonnes of recycling an hour but has the capacity to process four tonnes an hour and could easily accommodate Nelson’s recycling. The new building and plant is state-of-the-art with 7.9m high doors to allow the collection trucks to tip out the material which is processed by a semiautomated plant that includes conveyors, bins and balers operated by four staff. Paper and cardboard, tin, aluminium and plastic are each baled separately for export to commodity markets.

Making news at... School bus crash near Atawhai: A school bus carrying 20 children was involved in an accident on Friday morning near Todd Bush Rd. Senior fire officer Symon Mitchell says the driver of the car was taken to hospital but was not in a serious condition. None of the children on board were injured, but were “shaken” and eventually moved to another bus before being taken to school. Pokie thief causes school lock down: A 25-year-old man was arrested in Nelson on Thursday morning after assaulting a security guard at the Work and Income office and then heading to the Wakatu Hotel, where he pushed a customer off his chair in the pokie room and stole his money. He escaped on a bicycle to the Victory area, causing the local primary school to go into “lock down”. Victory Primary School principal Helen Taylor-Young says the school was in lock down for around ten minutes. “They [police] called and said that there was an offender in the area and to lock the school

Nelson fails to bid for blackspot fund: Nelson MP Nick Smith has asked for a ‘please explain’ from Nelson City Council after it failed to apply for funding to extend the region’s cellphone and broadband coverage. Nelson Weekly reported last month that Nelson had not applied for the $50 million in available grants, while Tasman District Council used the help of the Nelson EDA to prepare its bid for a slice of the cash. Of the 67 territorial authorities in the country, Nelson was one of only four that didn’t apply for the funding, because the application “would come at some cost to council”.

Alarmed by lack of alarms Fire Service says a lack of working smoke alarms is concerning

Andrew Board The Fire Service says Nelsonians are flirting with disaster by not having working smoke alarms installed in their homes. Over the past month the Nelson Fire Service has attended four fires where the owners of the home haven’t had a smoke alarm. Station officer Craig Davies says it was fortunate they started during

the day, so the occupants could see the smoke and get out. “Potential for disaster is huge, in recent times people have been lucky. Chances are the luck will run out.” He says the fires they attended included homes with elderly and young children. “We really want to make sure people are up to speed on smoke alarms. We need people to sort

it out and get them installed, or make sure the batteries still work.”

Craig says that people need to have a smoke alarm in every bedroom of the house as well as hallways and living rooms, and they need to be on the ceiling, not the wall. In one recent incident, the fire service was called to a sleepout in Tahunanui. The teenager who lived in the room had seen the smoke coming from a meterboard in the room.

Feedback sought to help speed up internet

If that happened during the night, Craig says they would never have noticed. “Your nose turns off when you’re asleep and that smoke was very toxic, so the occupant would have just died in their sleep. If you’re lucky enough to be awake, you’ll get away with it, but if you’re asleep, you won’t be so lucky.” For more information on smoke alarms, see www.fire.org.nz.

The first part of the Tasman District Council’s funding bid to the government for extended broadband internet access and mobile coverage in Tasman district has been submitted. Now councillor Judene Edgar is encouraging people to be involved in the second part of the bid, which is the development of a community-driven response to show there is a “genuine appetite” for improved services. “We also need to show how the community would use better internet to develop and strengthen into the future,” says Judene. She says that it is important that everyone helps identify solutions, which can be done by completing “a new quick and easy survey”. The survey has been created to answer the question ‘what would you do with better internet?’ The survey covers community, education and business questions.

Tanks, trucks and veterans help remember VJ Day

7

From left, Rodger Humphries, Barry Pont, Callum Humphries and Dave Lawes on a Universal “Bren Gun” Carrier at the VJ Day commemoration. The carrier was actually made in New Zealand during the war. The event was held at Rutherford Park. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

The 70th anniversary of VJ Day was commemorated at Rutherford Park last Saturday, marking the moment when the allies were victorious over Japan. Allan Carson was in the air force with number 19 fighter squadron as an intelligence officer when the war ended. His job was to brief the pilots before their missions and take their reports upon return. They were in New Britain on VJ Day and, after hearing rumours for weeks, were finally informed of Japan’s unconditional surrender. “At 0900 eastern Australian time the British Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, announced the unconditional surrender of Japan, and so after six years of war, peace has come again,” Allan wrote in his diary at the time. A month later Allan was required to take four Japanese pilots, who had been ordered down from their base at Raboul, and hand them over to the Australians. At the age of 23 on VJ Day, Allan says he had found it hard to believe they were at peace, and had mixed feelings over the two bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Murray Rowe joined the navy in 1940 for 12 years, serving in the Mediterranean and the Pacific. After the surrender, his squadron stayed and toured Japan for four months, but before going home they were taken into Nagasaki. With radiation still active, it was something he is still suffering from today. Organiser Kerry Neal says last Saturdays VJ Day commemoration was a chance to remember the past, with displays of vehicles from the era, and talk to the veterans who still remember the historical event well.

Community helps build cycle track The Brightwater community, with a little “arm-twisting” from teacher Alan “Dobbie” Dobson, has helped build a new cycle track in the school grounds so that pupils can learn basic bike skills in a safe and fun environment. Brightwater School started fundraising for the project track at their last school gala and the end result, a 500m long cycle track around the school playing field, was opened last Wednesday. Although the project cost just over $4000, it would have been a lot more without generous donations of materials and equipment from the business community. “Dobbie spent all of the last school holidays toiling away on the track,” principal Gerald Baldwin says. “He also spent

some time arm-twisting his friends in the community to help out with the project.” However, Dobbie says his friends didn’t take much persuading to lend a hand. Taylors Contracting, Austin Transport, Vince McAuley, Sollys and Wayne Hart all donated either material, equipment or time to help build the track under budget. “The first person I went to was Charlie Taylor from Taylor’s Contracting and he said ‘yes, what do you need’. So he ended up supplying 30 truckloads of trail mix which Austin Transport transported to the school,” Dobbie told the pupils and parents at the official opening. “Then I asked Vince McAuley if he could bring his dig-

ger down here and dig out the track. He said ‘no, but I’ll bring my excavator’ - excavator operators don’t like it when you call their excavators a digger. “After that I rang Grant from Sollys and asked if he could give us some dolomite to surface the track and he said ‘yes’. Finally I asked Wayne Hart if we could use his roller and he said yes, which was cool because I got to drive it.” Gerald says Lyall Stewart from Programmed Maintenance Services also provide a grant to help them research the project, while Frank’s Trees sand Titoki Nursery are providing trees and plants to landscape the track. Brightwater is the first school in the Nelson-Tasman region to open its own cycle track.

Mahana School to celebrate 100 years

A lot of things have changed at Mahana School since 1915. For a start, they no longer occupy the apple packing shed on the corner of School and Dominion roads, which was converted into a classroom in 1915 to educate children of families working in the district’s apple orchards. And in summer, students swim in a clean school pool instead of filling up the Archibald’s orchard sprayer with water and jumping in, although not everyone thought that was a good idea because the spray may have been tainted by the children. The teachers were also a lot more resilient back in the early days, with today’s principal Justin Neal saying one teacher lived in a tent next to the school while others rode to school on horseback. But Justin says some things haven’t changed. The first proper classroom built on the school’s new site in 1920 is still being used today and the same surnames keep appearing on the school roll. The strong RUNOUT community spirit that existed when the school opened 100 years ago also endures today. “The interestpeugeot .co.nz/208

ing thing about the history is that some of the old surnames still crop up. The names Thawley, Field and Archibald, for example, have been associated with the school its entire history - we’ve still got Field and Archibald kids here now. “Many kids had their parents and grandparents come here. It’s a traditional community like that.” Mahana School will be celebrating its centenary from September 11 to 13, with the last days of the celebrations being exactly 100 years since the school’s opening. The pupils will take part in a dressup day on Friday September 11 when visitors will start arriving for an informal afternoon tea, guided tours of the school and an audio visual history of the school from the students. On Saturday, there will be a formal greeting of all the past students of the school, a cake will be cut, decade photos will be taken and a dinner at Woollaston’s, who have kindly donated the use of their facility. A plaque will be unveiled on Sunday and then visitors will board a bus and take a trip down memory lane. peugeot.co.nz/208

Calling Nelson brides

Nelson brides are being called upon to dust off their wedding gowns for this year’s ‘bride of the year’ competition, which is being run as part of the Nelson Wedding Show this October. To be eligible to enter, brides must have gotten married between 30 April 2014 and 30 April 2015, and of course, still need to be married. Show organiser Casey Stevenson says that the bride can be entered into the show by the groom, bridesmaids or mothers-of-the-bride. “Whoever en-

National wine awards to be hosted at Saxton New Zealand’s premier wine awards will be in Nelson later this year, with the award gala dinner to be held at Saxton Stadium on November 28. Wine Nelson announced on Thursday that it will be the host region for the Air New Zealand Wine Awards gala dinner. The awards are the premier wine competition in New Zealand - the competition is owned and organised by New Zealand Winegrowers, the national organisation for the country’s 1700 grape growers and winemakers. Last year, 1535 wines were judged by a team of New Zealand and international judges to identify medal and trophy winners for each of the varietal categories, and New Zealand Winegrowers’ Chris Yorke says the awards dinner is \a big ADVERTISING night for New Zealand’s wine industry. “Nelson has a great reputation for producing world-class wines which makes it a fitting location for this year’s awards dinner,” he says. The gala dinner is held to announce and celebrate the Elite Gold, Pure Elite Gold medal winning wines and the Trophy winning wines, and to acknowledge the talents of the country’s NEL010 -72 x 140mm - Staff winemakers.

The entries will be narrowed down to a top five, who will get their hair and make-up professionally done on the day of the show. The overall winner will win a mystery weekend escape, and there will also be a people’s choice award, as voted on show day, which will be a pearl necklace and earrings from Glen

Just a thought... Sound bites – there must be power in them for companies to pay big money to advertise on TV. What are our sound bites? Earlier this year, my family had a bit of fun telling me all my pet sayings. Later I stopped and thought about what they kept hearing. Those pet sayings, or sound bites, were they what I wanted to leave as my legacy? Did I really want to be remembered as the Mum who loved her children and always checked they’d cleaned their teeth? A group of frogs travelled through the woods, and two fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might.

The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one Jenny Nicholof the frogs son, Chillistened to dren’s Pastor, the other Richmond frogs and New Life. gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, “Did you not hear us?” The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging words the entire time. The bible says “death and life

are in the power of the tongue.” Sometimes, as with our children, it is repetitive sound bites that impact. Other times it is that brief encounter where someone’s words impact. It may be a friend or a stranger. My young, fit husband cardiac arrested and was sent to Wellington’s heart unit. It was an uncertain time and as I went to visit I felt very fragile. A lady got into the lift with me and we chatted about the weather. She got out and had started to walk away when she turned , caught my eye and said “God Bless You”. Three words and that was all it took to encourage me and set my day back on track. God’s repetitive sound bite is ‘I love you. ’He said it so many ways in the words of the bible. And then Jesus said it with His life – on the cross. A police officer holds back the TPPA protest crowd while directing traffic at the corner of Hardy and Rutherford Sts on Saturday morning. The protest attracted around 800 people and started with speeches at 1903 Square on Trafalgar St, before moving through the Saturday market and to Hardy St. Photo: Jacob Chandler.

For Gemma Reed, owning her own business was the ultimate career step and has been on her mind since she entered the sign writing and graphics industry ten years ago. After leaving school, Gemma took on a five year apprenticeship with a local signage and design company, during which she received an award for top apprentice for sign writing and graphics in New Zealand for 2008. After her sixth year working for the company, Gemma left to pursue a three year career selling real estate, before returning to the world of signage and design, contracting to other local signage and graphics businesses. When the opportunity came along to lease a space in the Wakatu Industrial Estate, Gemma took it and The Art Dept was established. It’s been operating since the middle of May this year and, off the starting block, Gemma has made a splash, already completing a number of signage projects for local clients. While owning her own business has always been a dream, exactly what she would be offering was decided when she took part in work experience at school with Designart Signs. She knew art and creativity would

have to play a role in her career and found signage and graphics was the perfect fit. From the design to the installation, Gemma provides both the brains and the brawn on most projects and offers a number of services including full graphics for vehicles, buildings and signage. From designing logos for new businesses to rebranding and updating a businesses image, Gemma can then use those designs to create professional advertising products such as business cards, flyers, uniforms and customised reception counters to name a few. Window tinting is a service Gemma is looking to grow for both commercial and domestic clients, along with window graphics, or for privacy in an office space dominated by glass, talk to Gemma about window frosting. As the name suggests, The Art Dept isn’t all about commercial signage. Gemma is more than keen to take on any project her clients have in mind. From canvas art to general printed images that can be framed, Gemma has some products she knows her clients are going to love. Printable wallpaper arrives as blank sheets, just waiting to be filled with all manner of patterns and images.

WEDNESDAY 19 August 2015

Whether it’s a customised feature wall for your home or office, printable wallpaper offers so many opportunities for decorating. The Art Dept can also print or wrap images on to everyday objects, whether it’s a bedroom dresser you want to liven up, or any other item that needs the printing and creative expertise of Gemma Reed. Whatever you have in mind, whether it’s commercial of personal, come and talk to Gemma about your ideas. The Art Dept can be found at 1/10 Tokomaru Pl in the Wakatu Industrial estate. To talk to Gemma about professional signage, graphic and design solutions, give her a call on 021 876 187 or email gemma@art dept.co.nz

Gemma Reed now has her signage and design business, The Art Dept, up and running from her workshop in the Wakatu Industrial Estate.

Members of the Snooker section are in the midst of a number of tournament and social events, which will keep them occupied for the rest of the year. Last week, ten players competed in the Clubs NZ South Island Snooker Pairs Tournament at the Hornby Club in Christchurch. This was the 39th running of this event, to which our members have been attending since 1995. This year’s event saw a very strong field, played in four sections of nine teams before the Championship qualifiers were found. Four Waimea pairs qualified and, although being knocked out of the Championship early, performed creditably in the subsequent Flight competition. Our two teams in the local Interclub competition are battling each other for third position, with the event now extended for a further full round to terminate on September 22nd. The Upper Hutt Cossie Club will be paying us another visit over the weekend of October 9 and 10, while Motueka plan to come our way for the first time on November 22nd. The Kaiapoi Club from Canterbury will be bringing 20 plus members in March 2016, in response to our trip their way last year. Our section still has our Club Championship Billiards and Handicap singles and pairs to contest before the end of the year.

Club Waimea Darts

On Sunday, we hosted the area Sunday four’s league. We compete against other local clubs and two teams from Marlborough, great monthly competition of singles, pairs and a team game. Club Waimea have two teams of four in the league, our teams have been performing very well, Waimea one team currently in the top 3, very close competition, not many points between teams. Last round next month, keep up the great darts teams, lets see who takes out the trophy’s. Have you thought of playing darts? Everyone welcome to join darts, come along to Club Waimea, Friday nights at 7pm, talk to Zane or Karen to find out more and have a fun game of darts.

Sioux Line Dance

As part of Health and Safety for our line dance group, Sioux Dance organised a two hour workshop for CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training. This was conducted by the St. John Ambulance at Club Waimea. AED’s can now be found in many public areas and it was of benefit to us all to see how these work and have the opportunity to use it. Learning these skills to be able to carry out CPR and AED is a major factor in the survival of patients with cardiac arrest. There is an APP for your phone that will show you where the closest AED is, should it be needed.

From the President’s desk... Winter is well with us and it is noticeable with the slight down in revenue, however that`s expected due to winter. The sports groups are continuing to give great support to our club and it is greatly appreciated. The conference rooms are being well utilized, again that’s a plus for our club as there are several different organisations using them. Keep watching the gaming room for the exciting renovations not only with the de’cor, but the machines upgrades and layout, really exciting for members.

The support the campers are giving the club is again appreciated. The feedback from members, guests is that Phils Place is really great and we should consider ourselves very fortunate to have a professional looking not only after his own interests but Club Waimea`s as well. Just remember that the rugby and other sports will be on our TV’s, so come and enjoy, and watch for promotions coming to our club. Again I ask any member that has any suggestions or ideas, please contact myself or the manager. Enjoy your club. Cheers, Jan Phipps

Club Waimea caravan park residents Vicky Carter and Kevin “Taity” Tait outside their home.

Some of the members from the Club Waimea rugby supporters section in front of their rugby memorabilia display, from left, John Cullen, Ivan Reed, Rod Penn and Graham Peattie.

A lifestyle of freedom Rugby Display

It’s a common theme amongst Club Waimea caravan park residents to have chosen the club for its ability to provide a lifestyle of freedom. Vicky Carter and Kevin Tait are no exception and are adamant that they love how they live. For Vicky it was the seven years she spent in Australia that saw her seek out caravan life when she returned to New Zealand, while Kevin has always been into camping and was encouraged to move into the caravan park by a friend already living the dream. “To me it’s a social thing, you get to meet people easier in a caravan park than you do living in a house, people don’t want to know you when you’re in a house, here everyone looks after everyone and keeps an eye on everything,” says Vicky. While Vicky has only lived in the park for four

years, Kevin has been there seven, buying a caravan which he originally let a friend use for nothing. When his mate bought his own caravan, he suggested Kevin give it a go. “You’re on holiday all year round. People save up all year to come and spend two weeks camping, I used to do it when I was married with my children, now I’m permanently camping, it’s awesome,” says Kevin. “You meet people that talk about you, some gossipers, but you let that go, it’s like Coronation St really.” Being close to Richmond is a bonus and Vicky and Kevin agree there aren’t many downsides. “In the time that I’ve been here we’ve had Christmas parties, had a wedding and all sorts of stuff, those are the sorts of things you always remember, because you’ve all got together and you’ve all had a good time,” says Vicky.

Sun City Rockers 16th Birthday

It’s the Sun City Rockers 16th Birthday and to celebrate they’ll be doing what they love best, dancing the night away to some good old 50s music. Join them on 5 September at Club Waimea where live band Dixie Prix will be playing the music you know and love. The evening starts at 7:30pm and everyone is welcome, whether you are a member or not. Anyone interested in joining in on the night is advised to wear flat heel shoes for dancing. Member’s entry is $10 while non-members entry is $15.

If you’re a rugby fan looking forward to this year’s rugby world cup then come down to Club Waimea and have a look at the display of rugby memorabilia. Put together by the club’s rugby supporters section, the display was first set up for the world cup in England and has been pulled out for every competition since, as well

as some of the ITM and Super 15 events. In 2011 when the All Blacks won the world cup, Club Waimea was in full support with the biggest show of memorabilia yet. The majority of the collection is owned by Dave Birdling. Come and have a look and have a chat to Dave about the stories behind the items.

CUS ON WAKEFIELD

Wakefield School Chess Tournament by Emma Davies, Year 6 Every Monday, a group of about 20 students from Wakefield School Chess Club meet together at lunchtime and play brain-twisting games of chess against a partner in preparation for the big chess tournament. On Monday, August 10, this big event, the chess tournament, was held at Wakefield school hall. This tournament was organised by Bruce from Chess Power, a national organisation that promotes chess. It is a fun day where Primary schools

meet together and each player plays seven games of chess. When you have finished your game, you can have a go at some competitions or even play against a chess robot. There were two divisions this year; the rookies division for the children who are new to chess and an inter-schools competition for the more experienced players. We were proud that Riley from Wakefield School came third in the Rookies division. the time because of their age differences, both families attended Wakefield school and grew up with the hotel. “We all used to come in on a Saturday to the hotel with dad, have a packet of chips and a raspberry drink and then, of course, we’d come in as teenagers, and I’ve also worked here on two other occasions for two other owners,” says Maxine. The plan now is to bring the hotel into the twenty-first century with several alterations. “It’s a beautiful old place and it just needs a bit of tender love and care,” says Maxine. Waimea South Historical Society Inc. The society was formed in 1981 when a group of Wakefield residents interested in preserving and promoting knowledge about the district’s past decided to establish an incorporated society. Some key founding members had lived in Wakefield most of their lives and therefore felt strongly about the value of their past history. First published under the society’s name in 1991 and reprinted in March 1992 was From River to Range which established the group’s area of interest (Wairoa River to Spooners Range). This book was compiled to honour the 150th year

of European settlement in 1992. Between 1999 and 2006, Marion Springer produced two books which greatly expanded the material in From River to Range : Just Another Row of Spuds and More Wakefield Spuds. These have become basic references for anyone researching the family histories of early Wakefield settlers. The society was also instrumental in the erection of an information board about Lord Rutherford outside the hall at Foxhill, the positioning of a plaque to mark the site of the original Wakefield School in Edward Street, and the erection of an information board about William Harkness at the northern entrance to the Tasman District Library. Currently, they are concentrating on producing a tourist brochure with a working title of The Rutherford Trail to highlight places in the region with connections to Lord Rutherford.

Wakefield Pippins and Brownies The Wakefield Pippins and Brownies meet every Thursday during the school term from 4pm until 5.30pm. They only have one leader and really need more, so parents help make each week possible. The Pippins start from five years old and work towards four different coloured apple badges. Brownies are from seven years of age and work towards three koru badges. Some parts are worked on as a unit and others as an individual at home. The programme has five key educational methods of learning in small groups, my path at my pace, learning by doing, connecting with others and connecting with the world. This term the Wakefield Pippins and Brownies have experienced Geocaching, Irish dancing, made fridge magnet note holders, tied shoelaces, thinking and making a poster about reduce, reuse and recycle, designing burgers to make in two weeks’ time, wearing their favourite clothes fashion show and practicing campfire songs and skits. The Twin Peaks region will be having a campfire this Thursday at Paretai. If you have spare time on a Thursday afternoon and would like to join in the fun, come and find us.

SPORT Local riders finish winter series

It wasn’t quite a case of slow and steady wins the race, but Richmond road cyclist Chris Heywood showed that consistency and enthusiasm, at least, were enough to win the Ray White Winter Series. Chris wasn’t the fastest rider in the 11-race series that concluded with a race around the Hope circuit on Saturday - that honour went to former Olympic road cyclist Robin Reid who won five of the six A grade races he contested. But Chris still took the A grade title with 93 points, 25 more than Robin, after racing consistently to record one win, three seconds and three thirds in the nine rounds he started. Chris Sharland finished third in the series on 61 points with Saturday’s winner Hayden Squance fourth on 59. “Whenever Robin or Chris turned up, I was only racing for third,” Chris says. “But I wanted to do as many of the races as a I could so I didn’t go flat over winter and that paid off.” Chris says he also contested the series to maintain his race fitness for the Calder Stewart series which resumed with the Kings Electrical Ashburton Classic in Ashburton on Sunday. The FreshChoice Richmond Pomeroy’s teammember finished 12th in the masters section of the race held over 133km. “I haven’t really got any targets. I’ll ride the rest of the Calder Stewart

B grade went down to the wire on Saturday with Henry Kersten winning three races to finish on 106 points and edge out Brent Sturm on 92. Owen Hoggard won C grade ahead of Mark Goodall while Peter Harris won D grade. The women’s competition was won by promising Nayland College student Emma Bateup

Emma recorded 70 points racing in C grade to head off Jessica Hughes on 70 points and Suzie Wood on 60, with Georgia Cowman fourth and veteran Ann Rigg fifth on 49. The series was a family affair for many riders with race sponsor Brent Sturm competing against his son Jacob in B grade, while his wife Tracey and daughter Sarah contested D grade. The winter series attracted 125 riders.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: My son is in year 12 and wants

to study in Wellington in 2017. He is likely to get the full Student Allowance of $211; but it doesn’t seem like enough to live on. What other income options does my son have? A: Planning ahead for the costs of university study is a very good idea: Encourage your son to:

 Write up a budget of his likely costs of living when in Wellington  Calculate the living cost shortfall (which could be around $200 per week)  Explore local options for study so he could live at home  Consider staying with family, or going flatting instead of a hall of residence  Save money he has earned from working, while he is still at school  Apply for scholarships  Consider a working gap-year so he can save for university  Work part-time while he is studying at university

I think education is a good investment if it means your son will earn more in the future. Sorted.org.nz has some excellent advice and calculators for students.

Tasman District Council Community Grants

Notice of Road Stopping

Applications are open for Tasman District Council’s Community Grants. The Council allocates funds to support and encourage community-led projects. To be considered, applications must be for initiatives within Tasman and/or demonstrate the benefits to Tasman residents. Ideally, the funds applied for will be for a specific service that has community support. This year the total allocation is $219,000 over eight categories; • Community and Economic Development Initiatives $30,000 • Arts/Culture/Heritage/Museums $32,000 • Festivals and Events $40,000 • Youth and Children $25,000 • Social Services $21,000 • Environment $20,000 • Emergency Services $16,000 • Sport and Recreation Facilities $35,000 Applications close 31 August 2015. Applications can be made online or you can download an application form at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/community-grants-application Hard copy application forms are available from Council Service Centres and Libraries in Richmond, Motueka, Takaka and Murchison. Contact Tasman District Council Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones for further information on Ph. 03 543 8403.

At the request of the adjacent landowners, Tasman District Council is notifying its intention to stop a Service Lane which runs off Oxford Street in Richmond near the corner of Queen Street. The proposal to stop this Service Lane is being considered pursuant to Schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 1974. The road stopping application is being made by BP Oil New Zealand Limited, which owns land on both sides of the service lane. If the applicant is able to acquire the service lane, it will amalgamate it with adjoining land. If the road stopping is approved this will facilitate a more logical use of its land when the present site is upgraded. For further information please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council on Ph. 03 543 8400 or Email: robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz Any objections to the proposed road stopping should be made in writing to the address below and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Monday 14 September 2015. This is the second of the two notices required under the Local Government Act 1974.

Draft Abel Tasman Foreshore Scenic Reserve Management Plan Partial Review A partial review of the Abel Tasman Foreshore Scenic Reserve Management Plan (Foreshore Plan) is underway. The focus of the review is on four issues only: a) access to the reserve for kaitiaki responsibilities and non-commercial cultural activities; b) recreation concessions at Watering Cove and Observation Beach bays; c) provision of an additional Coastal Access Point at Tonga Quarry for a trial period; and d) drop off/retrieval of commercial hire equipment from the reserve. Any person or organisation may make written submissions, which must be received by 4.00 pm on Monday 12 October 2015. View the draft Foreshore Plan partial review document and submission form online at www.tasman.govt.nz or www.doc.govt.nz. Hard copies are available from Council Service Centres and public libraries in Richmond, Motueka and Takaka and from the Nelson public library. Submissions should be made online at: www.tasman.govt.nz or emailed to: atforeshore@tasman.govt.nz or posted to: Tasman District Council, Abel Tasman Foreshore Plan Partial Review, Private Bag 4, RICHMOND 7050.

Notice of Road Stopping At the request of the adjacent landowners, Tasman District Council is notifying its intention to stop a portion of un-named and unformed legal road which runs off Stringer Road in Redwood Valley. The proposal to stop this section of unformed road is being considered pursuant to Schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 1974. The land is shown as Section 1 on SO Plan 488508. The land area is approximately 7282 square metres. The road stopping application is being made by Tasman Limited, which owns all the land adjacent to the road to be stopped. If the applicant is able to acquire the land involved, it will amalgamate it with adjoining land. If the road stopping is approved this will facilitate what the applicant believes will be a more logical subdivision when that adjacent land is subdivided. The road proposed to be stopped is being replaced with Eban Road in a slightly different location. Plans of the proposed road stopping are available by emailling: info@tasman.govt.nz. Plans may also be viewed at the Richmond Office of Tasman District Council. Copies of plans, and this public notice, will also be available on the Council’s website. For further information please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council, Ph. 03 543 8400 or Email: robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz Any objections to the proposed road stopping should be made in writing to the address below and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Monday 28 September 2015. This is the first of the two notices required under the Local Government Act 1974.

Proposed Road Closures The following roads are proposed to be closed as indicated below.

National Advanced Drivers School – Driver Training 17 and 18 September 2015 and 12, 13, 14 October 2015, from 10.00 am–11.00 am, 12 noon–1.00 pm, 2.30 pm–3.30 pm (approximate times): • Marchwood Park Road, Motueka, from entrance at Queen Victoria Street. Any person objecting to the proposal should lodge notice of their objection before Friday 28 August 2015 to the office of the Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Richmond.

ROSOMAN JAMie LeN

It is with deep sadness that I announce Jamie’s passing on Wednesday 12 August 2015 at Nelson Hospital. He was an extremely brave man who fought the battle of his life with dignity, hope, strength and trust. He fought to the very end, trying to keep his mind and body active. RIP Jamie, you deserve peace. You earned it gallantly. Thank you for all the knowledge you shared with me. You were a mountain of knowledge on nearly every subject. Jamie was cremated last Friday after being driven for his final ride in his beloved retired ambulance, past our home then onto the crematorium, with his favourite songs blasting. He is survived by his three children, Steven, Aleasha and Mikayla. A memoriam for Jamie will be held at his home at 1.00pm on Wednesday 19 August at 45 Bishopdale Rd and everyone is welcome. Go in peace my love, I will never forget you. Lianne.
