Rehearsals are underway to bring the fairytale of Shrek to life on the stage at Waimea College toward the end of June. Around 150 students from the college are involved in all areas of the production, from actors to lighting and sound, costumes and set design, and the entire school orchestra. Production manager Pauline
Farley says the wait for the rights to the popular musical to become available has been worth it. “The storyline is just so great and there’re so many characters it requires so much involvement from a lot of kids, so it’s just a great production to be doing,” says Pauline. The story is part romance and part twisted fairytale that follows Shrek, an unlikely hero, and his loyal steed
and wise-cracking Donkey, as they set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful, if slightly temperamental, Princess Fiona. Add the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits and a biscuit with attitude and you have a great mix of adventure, laughter and romance, suitable for all ages. For year 13 student Rebecca Rea, landing the role of Princess Fiona came as a relief.
“I wanted it so bad, since I was year 9 I’ve wanted a main role in a production. And Fiona’s a princess, who doesn’t want to be a princess? Also, the fact she’s part ogre and part human is going to make for some interesting costume changes,” says Rebecca. The school says tickets will be available from next term via an online ticket service they’ll be trialling for the first time.
Work will be underway shortly to widen Richmond’s Bateup Rd and provide a shared walkway and cycleway. Tasman District Council (TDC) is carrying out the work to make the road safer for all users and help cater for increased traffic resulting from growth that includes a new supermarket and residential subdivisions in the area. The new subdivisions include Hart Rise/Arizona and Paton Rise. The road and footpaths will be made wider from Three Brothers Corner to Wensley Rd, and the shared walk and cycle ways will be created. Higgins Contracting will carry out the construction that includes a roadside drain being replaced with piped stormwater and some stormwater storage chambers. TDC project manager Graham Rimmer says the work is extensive and will require Bateup Rd to be reduced to one lane for its entire length during construction. The project is due for completion by Christmas 2018. “We appreciate this is going to be a lengthy period of construction for residents and others who use Bateup Rd, and we thank you in advance for your patience.” Richmond is growing extremely quickly and we do need to carry out some pretty major infrastructure upgrades to cater for that.” There aren’t any quick, easy fixes but the end result will serve our growing population for many years to come, so I hope everyone can bear with us in the meantime,” says Graham.

In the early hours of Tuesday, April 10, police, fire and ambulance attended the scene of an accident where a driver was trapped in her car on the Wakefield-Kohatu Highway. A witness says she was heading to bed at 2am on Tuesday morning when she heard a noise that sounded like a prowler on the veranda. “We were about to close the front door when we heard someone calling for help.” A car had crashed into a power pole, trapping the female driver inside.

The witness and her husband spoke to the driver to keep her calm, before some truckers stopped, moved the pole off the road and were able to help the driver out of the boot of the car. She says her telephone pole was hit so hard that the letterboxes on it ended up on the other side of the road. “It snapped and was pulled right out of the ground.” A police spokesperson says the woman with moderate injuries was transported to Nelson Hospital.
