New fire station is a great asset
Wakefield’s Chief Fire Officer Simon Ladley was delighted with the positive public reaction and encouraging feedback at the opening of the new fire station on Saturday. “It’s a great asset, not just for the brigade members but for the whole Wakefield community,” he says. The fire station will give the brigade more space for training and operational facilities. It will also be used for public meetings. After the building was officially opened by David McFarlane QSM on behalf of the NZ Fire Service Commission, the public was invited to view the facility and appliances during a two hour open session in the afternoon. To date the Headingly Centre project has cost about $3.8m and Ken says it may take about another $1.5m to complete. Much of this will come from supporter contributions. The project started with Grace Church, which has been meeting at Waimea College Hall for the past 11 years, wanting a place of its own. About seven years ago it purchased the land and began to raise money to build its centre. Ken says Headingly Centre’s developers later withdrew from accepting Tasman District
Council funding as they didn’t want to be subject to public criticism, unfair or otherwise, for years down the track. Two Sundays ago Headingly Centre hosted its first Grace Church service and one of the pastors, Tony Barnett, says, “It was a wonderful occasion. We had about 300 people attend and the comments were very encouraging. It’s nice to have so much room available now and for anticipated growth.” Headingly Centre will hold an open day for the public this Sunday, November 21, from 2.30 to 4.30pm. Cinderella Goes to the Santa Parade Fairytale fun is hitting the streets of Richmond this year for the much anticipated return of the Richmond PAK ‘n SAVE Santa Parade. One of the floats featured in this year’s event will be the Cinderella Goes to the Ball entry from Dance Magic Studio. Phoebe Guthrie of Dance Magic is going to arrange her dancers in a “big and animated” way that includes all the key characters from the story. The theme for this year, ‘A Fairytale Christmas,’ has inspired a record number of businesses and groups to join in and create their own piece of Christmas magic for the community. The parade officially kicks off at 12pm but beforehand the streets will be alive with give-aways, face painting, the sweet sounds of the Richmond School choir and the mediaeval antics of Nelson’s own Mediaeval Society. The fun continues afterwards with Samba de Sol and an awards ceremony in Sundial Square. So come along and celebrate the start of the Christmas season in a true fairytale fashion.

Graft pays off for local nurseryman David Harris of Thirkettle Nurseries in Hope has finished runner up in the NZ Young Horticulturalist of the Year competition held in Auckland, beating all but one of seven other national champions in various fields of horticulture. He says, “By also winning the Outstanding Skills and Leadership category I think I ended up taking home more value in prizes than the overall winner, Stuart Dudley of Blenheim who represented the viticulture sector.” For his grand effort in preparing for and performing in the competition the 28 year-old Wakefield resident won a prize package totaling $26,000; including an FMG sponsored $15,000 leadership training scholarship, $5,500 course fees at Massey and an eight day Outward Bound course. Dave says the competition wasn’t a matter of simply turning up after qualifying by winning the Nursery & Garden Industry Association Young Achiever of the Year competition in Christchurch in July. “There was a lot of homework
to do in the two months leading in. I spent two months working on a marketing plan and report and had to do a presentation at the competition.” Dave says all finalists – including those from aboriculture, pipfruit, landscaping and florestry sectors - having already proved their superiority in their own fields, were required to complete the same set of practical and theoretical tasks such as First Aid, pest management and trailer load-securing challenges. Dave, who has been working at Thirkettle Nurseries for nearly four years, says he’s looking forward to increasing his knowledge and leadership skills by redeeming his various, study related prizes. “I’ll be attending some retreats addressed by key speakers so life is going to be very hectic over the next few months, on top of all the work the busy season brings here.” Dave says ultimately as well as continuing his work at Thirkettle he would like to breed new varieties of plants as a sideline. “That’s something I find particularly interesting.”

New Nelson to Abel Tasman ferry to launch A new Nelson to Kaiteriteri ferry service will begin before Christmas. After just 25 weeks of construction, Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles’ new innovative $1.2 million vessel, ‘The Crusader’, is nearing completion. The 150-seater catamaran will ferry people from Nelson to Kaiteriteri and back once a day, and will be the flagship of the Kaiteriteri to Totaranui and return run during the rest of the day. The Nelson service will only run during the height of the tourist season. The Nelson service is complimentary to the existing service that Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle runs says its sales and marketing manager Mark Chapman. “Many visitors
to the area stay in Nelson and then experience the Abel Tasman in a day. The new boat gives the opportunity for these visitors to have a choice of coach or boat to the Park.” Engineer, and co-owner of Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle, Keith Knapp, says since people became aware of the Nelson crossing, many of them have asked why, when so many have tried and failed. “The simple answer is that we can design and build a boat specifically for the crossing with both comfort and speed.” A team of skilled engineers led by Keith and fellow co-owner Paul Smith has made amazing progress to build the catamaran

Last Thursday Richmond commemorated Armistice Day, a significant event on the RSA calendar which marks the end of World War One. We were at Richmond Town Hall and Memorial Gardens to experience this moving occasion. Appleby Playcentre held a spring dance at Redwood Valley Hall to raise funds to upgrade its outdoor area. A large crowd attended and enjoyed the music of Marcus Roebuck’s The Boogie Train and Lisa Quinn’s Sol Room. Wakefield Fire Station opened its new station on Saturday and welcomed the general public to an open afternoon, during which they showed off their modern facility and equipment. Armistice Day restored in town
Near enough wasn’t good enough for past RSA district president Rick Williams so he organized a civic service on the real Armistice Day in Richmond this year. “For many, many years we’ve simply held Remembrance Sunday as close to November 11 as possible but this is a very significant anniversary – bearing in mind New Zealand’s World War One casualty rate was higher than any other country involved – so it should be commemorated on the proper day,” says Rick. Accordingly about 60 people attended the service just before 11am at the Richmond Town Hall to listen to short addresses by Mayor Richard Kempthorne and local clergymen Father David Gruschow and Paul Tregurtha before observing one minute silence as the fire siren sounded. Wreaths were then laid in the Memorial Gardens across the road in Cambridge Street. Rick says Richmond Mall and Richmond Unlimited management were willing to mute the sound systems in the retail sector at the same time as a mark of respect for the 100,000 Kiwis who served in WW1, suffering a staggering 60% casualty rate. The 160 local men who fought and fell and whose names appear on the cenotaphs at Richmond, Brightwater, Spring Grove, Wakefield, Kohatu and Tapawera were recited at the service which will become an annual event in Richmond.

Wakefield-based theatre group Country Players have picked for their Christmas production a play with a theme which thousands of Kiwi women will relate to. Director Melanie Stewart, a Waimea College drama teacher, says, “Pack of Girls tells the story about girls who are sick and tired of playing second fiddle, watching from the sidelines and preparing afternoon teas and cleaning up afterwards while their husbands and boyfriends play

At the Murchison Heat on Saturday, the Rotoiti Lakers pulled, pushed, jumped and balanced their way into the finals along with the Suckers, Murchison Surf Team and the Bad Ars Monster Truckers who will compete against the top four teams from the Saxton and Motueka Heats. Sarah Peacock from the Murchison Surf Team said “we entered just for a laugh, but once we started playing, the competitiveness just kicked in and we couldn’t help ourselves”. In the junior division, local team the Hot Fudgez topped the polls followed by Wakefield team the 6 Luna Chicks, Ruby Bay team the BIS Bone Benders and local team the Red Devils. The BIS Bone Benders also competed in Heat 2 at Saxton Field and came 5th by one point, so were determined to try again, and this time came in third making it through to the finals. The Red Devils also won the best dressed junior team and the Suckers won the best dressed senior team. “It was a perfect day; great weather, great fun, great attitudes, great sportsmanship”, said organised Judene Edgar. “The finals are shaping up to be a fantastic fun day for competitors and spectators.”
KiwiSport has granted funding so students at nine local schools can learn to swim. Welcome to the November “On the Brightside” Newsletter. We all certainly enjoyed reading the October newsletter and take this opportunity to thank all the local advertisers for supporting our community newsletter. At our meeting this month Rua Sargent informed our Association about the BMX Track plan. We, as a community, need to get behind this project and help where we can. The track will be a great
asset for our young and older people to use. Our community Noticeboard, is getting a spruce up. To enable us to do this it could be out of action for a week or so in January. Our Association has made a submission re Amalgamation with the Nelson City Council. The majority of members at the meeting were against the amalgamation. We now wait to see what the next step in the process will be.
Brightwater branch of Rural Women NZ Three visitors were welcomed to our November meeting. Members were congratulated on the successful Pink Ribbon Tea Party held at Wakefield in October. Billy Kerrisk of “Let’s Get Plastered” fame demonstrated how to make breast plaster casts and judging by the number of plaster kits that went out the door, a lot of ladies will be busy plastering. National Breast Health Educator, Patricia Field, answered lots of questions and put to rest some myths. Members were reminded of the upcoming Christmas lunch and the Mystery Trip. Margaret Booth then spoke about her adventures on her first trip to Yosemite National Park in America in 1979. With threats of engines falling off aeroplanes and delays, it seems nothing much has changed. The Roll Call was a plant exchange so members’ gardens will be looking really great. Eco Group Students, Sam Sargent, Tom Appleton, Kane Elvy and Michaela Sixtus have been learning about self-sufficiency through the planting and caring of vegetables at school. Teaching children about vegetable gardens enables them to better understand the connection between the food they eat and the Earth. Vegetable gardening has many benefits such as teaching children about hard work, planning, and patience. It also encourages children to eat their vegetables.
BMX track upgrade The track upgrade is gaining momentum now. We have had a very positive meeting down at the track with 12 boys and girls, mostly primary school age, and 6 parents attending. The general consensus was that the children liked the wide and smooth track at Tahunanui. Most of our users are younger and with this in mind, we have designed a track that won’t be overly steep or technical and would be most suitable for our community, ensuring it gets lots of use. The next step is to liaise with BMX NZ to gain feedback on the design, before signing it off and planning the construction. The TDC have generously offered to
supply the many truckloads of clay that will be required to build the new track. Our job, as a community, is to get together and make sure that this is a facility that will be top quality. That means raising some funding and some good old-fashioned manual labour. As we near construction phase, we will keep you posted. If you have skills and resources as a contractor and you want a top class place for children to engage in physical activity, please bear us in mind over the next few months, when we will need some assistance. On the Brightside The Brightwater horticultural society The Brightwater Horticultural Society has been in existence for 106 years, but this does not detract from the fresh flowers and crafts exhibition. We are a small but lively group who organise the Brightwater Flower shows. New members are very welcome. It costs $2 per person to become a member. Our recent Spring Show was very successful with 142 narcissi (daffodil) entries in the open and amateur sections. The quality of the blooms was excellent and the judges, Rex and Barbara Bright from Blenheim, did a great job of selecting the premier blooms. The champion bloom was won by John and Marie Hunter – with an as
yet unnamed seedling with a large orange cup and white perianth. Our annual Christmas dinner will be held this month at the Brightwater Motor Inn’s restaurant - Crossroads. After lunch we will be arranging our Summer Show to be held at the Brightwater Hall on Saturday, January 29th 2011 from 1pm to 4.30pm and Sunday 30th January from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Plant, gift, cake and produce stalls, Waimea Floral Art Group’s display, afternoon teas with home baking and raffles. Gladiolas, dahlias and many other flowers will be exhibited. Busy times at Book now for Brightwater CHRISTMAS Playcentre FUNCTIONS Brightwater Playcentre is a very busy place to be, with fifty families currently enrolled. We have a wonderful, large centre with a very friendly and outgoing supervision team. Our session times are 930 till 12 Monday to Friday. We are currently very busy organising our float for the Santa parade on the 27th of November. We will be holding a coffee and cake stall at the Community Market being held at the Spring Grove Drill Hall, next to Playcentre, on the 20th of November. Please come along and support our Centre and enjoy some great cake and coffee. We are also holding a Shopping Night on December 1st. MOTORHOME AND School prepares for pet and flower show CAMPERVAN HIRE On Friday the 19th November Brightwater School will hold its annual Pet and Flower Show Day, an important day on the school calendar for over 100 years. Children will have the opportunity to bake, make floral arrangements and decorate sand saucers as well as bringing their pets to school.

Angels bring style to power lifting Three Nelson athletes will bring a bit of tough competition to the Bledis-bro Power-lifting Champs in Wellington this weekend. The three-some - a blonde, red-head and brunette - have created the Power Angles team brand for themselves. “It’s such an unglamorous sport, you’re in really tight suits, the knees are all wrapped, you have chalk all over you and when you’re doing a squat your eyes almost pop out of your head. So we’ve added a bit of tougue-in-cheek by creating some fun team singlets,” says mother-of-one Aimee Banks. Aimee, along with Chris Webber and Celia McMillan, are the only power lifters of Nelson to go to the champs this Saturday featuring 48 New Zealanders against an Australian team. Power lifting takes the best of three attempts at squat, dead lift and bench-press. Celia, a personal trainer and mother-of-two, has been competing on and off for 7 years and says the sport is fantastic fun and really supportive.
“It’s a sport that’s really good for women because you’re not worried about how you look. It’s a performance based so that’s what we enjoy and you’re strong and really healthy, it gives you something to strive towards as well. Having goals and consistently trying to improve yourself is really good. “ Aimee and Celia are both current national title holders and all three hope to get a personal best at the competition. Held at the Richmond showground’s over this weekend The Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral Show offers the largest range of activities to keep the whole family entertained! A Kiwi tradition, our two-day show has something for everyone including: live entertainment, livestock competitions, agricultural demonstrations and displays, amusements, side shows and a range of stalls selling everything from cars to candy floss. And as the ad says “its time to get some poo on your shoe.” The 2010 Nelson A&P Show features the following entertainment and special events: AMAZING DRUMMING MONKEYS Congo and Bongo will be performing their variety show for the children and have been described as “better than Hi-5”. With three shows per day, the puppets will be entertaining the crowds of kids with their music and funny antics. Great entertainment in a fantastic carnival atmosphere, what more could a kid want? RURAL WEAR & TEAR The inaugural wear & tear competition is being held on Saturday at 1.45pm and will see the creative talents in utilising farming materials and bits and pieces to design all manner of clothing. You are going to be amazed at what some of the contestants have come up with! EQUESTRIAN A full two day programme of events with

the largest field of competitors featuring in the show jumping section for many years. The Green Door High jump event will feature at approximately 1.30pm on Saturday in the Showjumping arena. On Sunday The Nelson Building Society Supreme Ridden Pony and Industrial Coating Specialists Supreme Ridden Hack will be awarded. The Clydesdale section will be competing on both days of the show and is bound to be a crowd favourite. Some say these gentle giants were responsible for the building of New Zealand before the tractor. LIVE MUSIC “Recommended by Your Mom” and “Peasants of Eden” will be gracing the main music stage on both days of the show between 10am and 3pm. The Regiment Pipe Band will be featuring on both days and the Nelson Brass Band will be playing on Sunday afternoon. MITRE 10 MEGA BEE EXPO For the second year running the live bee display will feature at the show and live working bees (see over for more info). ANIMAL NURSERY The animal nursery is one of the most popular locations at the Show, and this year is centrally located in the main ring. The gorgeous day-old chicks will be there thanks to Ewings Poultry and so will a number of other young animals and yes you will be able to get up real close to these cuties. WOODCHOPPING A huge two day competition of events with top axeman from all over New Zea-

Serving up riveting TV, and an insatiable host, we present the one and only, Richard Till. Richard who made his way into our living rooms last year as the opinionated, unpretentious and likeable chef in Kiwi Kitchen is now a New Zealand household name. Richard is at ease in front of a crowd and certainly knows how to draw one. Since debuting on television, Richard has branched out and utilised some of his many skills to write books and then toured the country with the second series of his top rating TV show. He’s so popular in fact, that Foodtown and Countdown have chosen him as their pin up boy. He cracked the food market by doing comedy cooking shows in Arts Festivals in Wellington and ca-
tered for visiting music tours such as U2, Simply Red and Stevie Wonder. A real entrepreneur, Richard understands business and has also owned his own restaurants. Which is not half bad for a kiwi bloke who grew up in Christchurch and Dunedin building and painting sets! Richard loves going out to small country communities and his broad appeal guarantees he’ll be in demand for a very long time. A dash of comedy, a bucket load of charm and a well recognised face with a commanding presence should ensure his cook off against mayor Richard Kempthorne and the late bloomer Miles Drewery from “Miles of Food” will be one not to miss. Mitre 10 MEGA Bee Expo The Bee Exhibition first became a section at the Nelson Agricultural & Pastoral Show in 2009. In that first year, it won the’ Largest Trade Exhibit’ and the prestigious ‘Best Overall Trade Exhibit’. Since the Bee Exhibition, there has been a notable increase in interest from the bee fraternity and general public for an Apiculture Section to become a permanent fixture at the Nelson A & P Show. As a result, the ‘Trees for Bees’ theme from 2009 was so successful, it will now be incorporated into the exhibit every year. The exhibition consists of beehive frames enclosed in glass; a gazebo with a small beehive; extensive native tree display; display boards; two 52” television screens; and large display boards, together with bee by-products offered for sale. the internal workings of the beehive. Beekeepers help visitors to differentiate between the Queen bee, worker bees and the drones, as well as the cycle of brood. A small nucleus beehive, in the security of the gazebo, is opened hourly for viewing. Volunteers are invited to enter the gazebo to experience the bees first hand. Rotating informative videos can be viewed on the two large television screens, along with comprehensive posters. The convenor of the expo Rae Butler says “this year Nelson Honey, Digisafe, Vibrant Earth, the National Beekeeping Association, Federated Farmers, Landcare and Cawthron are all supporting theMitre10 MEGA Nelson Bee Expo and this promises to be an outstanding education experience for all those visiting the marquee”.

This Week
Just a thought - from Jerusalem I’m presently in Jerusalem so here are some of my thoughts from a unique city which, if it could speak, could tell more stories than any other, while at the same time it can tell us more about ourselves than any other city in the world. It is probably the longest continually inhabited city, it has seen more bloodshed and hatred than most and while it has been destroyed at least sixteen times, it has been rebuilt seventeen times. An ancient yet modern city full of contrasts, traditions and cultures inhabited by people from almost every country on earth, each with their own stories to tell. A city that is very vibrant teeming with more reporters and journalists than any other all competing to report their latest story, without bias of course. Of even more significance is the story of the city which is inextricably linked with the course of history and which is gradually unfolding before
us. If we care to look a little further and probe a little deeper beyond the superficial and the ‘seen’ there is a greater reality which more than telling us a story it paints an incredible picture of our own humanity.

A unique feature is the large number of walls in the city, some beautiful, some are broken down and some are ugly. The city is probably best known for two controversial walls, one that is over 2000 years old and is a symbol of hope and the other built in the last decade for security reasons yet has served to highlight the divisions in the city. The city of Jerusalem has a name which means peace and has been called the ‘city of peace’ despite its history of war and bloodshed. It is the one city that the bible says to pray for its peace and it is recorded that before his death, Jesus knowing its history and its future, wept bitter tears for the city and its people. In fact his death just a few days later was the only way that the dividing walls of hostility between us and within us could be broken down giving one sure path capable of bringing reconciliation and peace on earth.

Saint Paul’s host touch tourney Home ground advantage counts for something and it was just enough to help the Saint Paul’s School Year 5-6 touch team grab a draw against Saint Mary’s of Blenheim in the final of the top of the south catholic schools tournament. Saint Paul’s entered two teams in this grade
which included Saint Mary’, Saint Joseph’s of Nelson and Saint Canice’s of Westport. Saint Paul’s lost to Saint Mary’s in the roundrobin match but qualified for the final with two wins and ultimately shared the title with the Blenheim visitors.

Greenacres to host ‘Have a Go at Golf’ day “ How do kids get into golf if you don’t have a family member or friend involved?” It is a question Tasman golf development manager Chris Pugh has heard before, and now he has an answer. This Sunday the Greenacres Golf Club is hosting a family day where people can come along and have a go at golf under the eye of Chris and other golf coaches for free. The initiative is being run throughout the country by New Zealand Golf and aims to get kids into the sport which Chris says has some wrong perceptions. “We want to clear up some misconceptions about golf – that it’s for old boring blokes and that’s expensive because for kids it’s not. “Many clubs have equipment they can use just to see if they want to play the game and the average yearly sub for a junior golfer is about $50. When you relate that to other sports, which go all year either, it’s really
cheap.” As well as learning a few new skills, having a putt on the green and playing a few holes, some great prizes will be up for grabs says Chris. “We really want kids and families to come down and give golf a go, see if they enjoy it. The structure is in place for kids at the clubs and I think that is vital, in the past if a child wanted to play golf how did they start? “You can’t just go out on the course and play because you have to learn about the game first so that’s what the coaching and this day is all about. We are trying to make the sport more accessible and more welcoming for more people. “Even if you’ve never contemplated playing before this is your chance to give it a go.” The Have a Go at Golf day is this Sunday, 21 November from 9 to 12noon at the Nelson Golf Club or from 3 to 5pm at Greenacres on the same day.

Tapawera invite Rotoiti to athletics Tapawera Area School Primary School Athletics Day dawned brilliantly fine and hot. Lake Rotoiti Primary School was invited to join in and Principal Giles Panting jumped at the offer. “It is a great day for our students.” They brought most of the students, many parents and the school staff. It was an opportunity to provide some challenging opposition for the smaller school while introducing new blood into the different age groups in the Tapawera competition. Giles said, “The children of Lake Rotoiti School enjoy the opportunity of competing against a range of their peers and we hope we add an element of unknown competition for the Tapawera students.” This event prepares the children for entries in the Primary Athletics champs in Motueka. Two school records were broken in the long jump and high jump by Year 7 student, Tess Haunch, from the under 12 age group.

Locals win radio controlled car title A group of Nelson Radio Control Stockcar club racers travelled to the South Island Championships in Christchurch where 27 stockcars were divided into two groups for qualifying before the top 18 cars were found. Hot night, hotter racing By Wayne Martin What more could you want from a night at the speedway. Hot weather and hot racing through all the classes at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway. With the withdrawal of Christchurch Glen Eagles a few weeks ago it was up to the Stockcar class to up the ante and put on a show to send the public home knowing they had been thrilled. With $500. up for grabs for the biggest stirrer and roll over money for the night the good sized crowd was not disappointed. After the dust had settled and by way of a three car run off Caleb Russ came out triumphant over second place Wayne Krammer while Cody Teece took out the third spot for the night. Justin Hearne was awarded the stirrers’ money in his attempt to keep everyone honest. The other promotion for the night was the Production Saloon Best Pairs. There was some good hard racing by these guys and girls. The pairing of Isaac Russ and Dave Leitch with their consistent placings took the spoils and bragging rights. The Streetstocks once again put on a good show for the paying public, really mixing it up and swapping a lot of paint during their three races for the night with Gordon Ingham,
Nathan Thomas and Tim Jimmink all taking hard fought wins. The Superstocks are starting to turn up in good numbers now and on Saturday night saw the return of Brendon “The Hurricane” Higgins to the dirt. He resumed with a win straight off the bat while the other two races were won by Craig Boote and current South Island Champion Brett Nicholls. Although down on numbers the Midget class had their first hit out for the season. Nick Marquet has started his campaign on a strong note taking two of what appeared to be easy wins while only just failing to win the last race after giving himself a big handicap at the start, finishing just behind John Trehane. Wanderers looking for a hero By Richard Bell Taylors Contracting Wanderers senior cricket team played Wakatu at Victory Square in the first day of two day competition. The day started well with Wanderers winning the toss and deciding to bat but that was the only good thing to happen for them. Disappointingly Wanderers were bowled out for 123 with only Hayden Ingham (36) and Gregory Field (27) batting well enough to make meaningful contributions. This meant a long day in the field for Wanderers while Wakatu scored an imposing 334/6 declared with Simon McGowan (111) and Luke Toynbee (109no) scoring centuries. Damien Sims was the most successful bowler for Wanderers with two wickets. At stumps Wanderers was 20/1 in their second innings, still 191 runs in arrears.
Gym tournament ‘a massive success’ Nelson Gymnastics are calling its annual primary schools tournament a massive success after more than 400 pupils took part. The Primary School Gymnastics Competition, hosted by Nelson Gymnastics, was run over two days last week and featured 430
kids from 15 Nelson and Tasman schools. Jenna Robertson, of Nelson Gymnastics, says the competition was all about fun. “We always take a look at the results and pick out the ones that are reasonably high up and trial them for our competitive programme, but generally it’s all about fun and participation and giving it a go. Quite often they can’t do a skill but in here the judges do help them and often the kids complete a skill for the first time ever, so that’s really cool. Great league man battles serious illness Dylan Kerr says the thrill of watching the Kiwis win the Four Nations final against the Kangaroos on Saturday night faded into insignificance when he learned his rugby league mentor, Paul Bergman, is suffering a serious brain tumour. A former Waimea College student and rugby player, Dylan was encouraged to attend Paul’s rugby league academy in Wellington three year ago with the ultimate goal of being picked up by one of NRL clubs. Paul’s scouting talent and development programme has taken Simon Mannering from the Nelson College rugby First XV to Warriors captain and a key player in the Kiwis World Cup and Four Nations successes. Dylan says, “When Paul left Wellington to take up a coaching job at Gold Coast – where he now lives with his wife and three young children – the academy lost its structure and pathway as far as I was concerned so I returned home.” Dylan says Paul is a wonderful caring man who takes a genuine interest in all aspects of the lives of the young players in his academy and care. “I hope Paul is able to win his battle against the tumour, he deserves to. Dylan’s father Warren says, “We appreciate the interest and encouragement Paul gave Dylan. He’s certainly one of those men who can turned boys’ dreams into realities.” Paul, a former Kiwis assistant coach, is a member of a prominent Richmond family which includes father John and brother Phil who operate Control Services, contracted to TDC. It is understood Paul underwent surgery in Australia on Monday to remove a fast growing brain stem growth.

The Council has received applications for resource consent, which have been publicly notified in The Nelson Mail. The applications and supporting information may be examined in any Council office. The full public notice may be found online at Council’s website (www.tasman.govt.nz). Any person may make a submission on the applications in accordance with Section 96 of the Resource Management Act 1991. Submission forms are available from Council offices and on Council’s website. Please note that the following is an abridged advisory notice only.
Summary of Decisions Requested by Submitters and Opportunity for Further Submissions Pursuant to Clause 7 of the First Schedule to the Resource Management Act 1991, Council has prepared summaries of decisions requested by persons who made submissions to the above proposed variations and proposed change to the Tasman Resource Management Plan. The summaries of decisions requested by submitters are available for public inspection at the Richmond, Motueka and Takaka offices of Council. The summaries are also available on Council’s website www.tasman.govt.nz or can be emailed by contacting Pam Meadows, Ph. 03 543 8581, email pam@tasman.govt.nz. Copies of all original submissions (including submission point numbers) are also available for public inspection at Council offices. Further Submissions Any person who represents a relevant aspect of the public interest or who has an interest in the proposed variations or change greater than the general public may make a further submission to the Council in support of or in opposition to the submissions received. Further submissions will be accepted by Council for a period closing at 4.00 pm on Monday 22 November 2010. All submissions can be sent to Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond, Attention: Manager Policy. Further submissions must be in writing and must clearly indicate which parts of the original submissions are supported or opposed, with reasons. Further submissions must state whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of his or her further submission and provide an address of the submitter for service. All persons who make a further submission to the Council must, within five working days, send a copy of the further submission to the person or persons who made the original submission. Hearings After further submissions have closed, Council will hold hearings into all submissions, and any person who made an original or a further submission may be heard on his or her submission. The run will leave the Papp’s Car Park off Cambridge Street in Richmond at 11.00 am. The ride will proceed up Queen Street, along Salisbury Road, through Stoke, along Waimea Road, into Selwyn Place, down Trafalgar Street, left into Halifax Street, and right into Paru Paru Road stopping at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson. The club will have riders on hand to marshal roundabouts and intersections if necessary. The police will provide a lead and a tail car and will manage all the intersections that are normally controlled with traffic lights.
