Drought and fire risk prevented the popular Nelson Wine and Food festival from happening earlier this year, but that hasn’t deterred organisers from forging ahead for 2020. The Rotary Club of Richmond is currently busy organising one of the region’s most popular events, planned to return on February 16, 2020. Festival-goers will notice a big change next year, as the festival relocates back to its birthplace at the A&P Showgrounds on Lower Queen Street, after moving to Middle Earth Vineyards in Brightwater in 2004. Peter Glue, a member of the organising committee, said after they discovered that the previous venue was being sold, they had to look for new options. “The A&P showground is a great area to have it. There’s natural shade, ample power for stallholders, and it’s close to a big population base.” Accessibility played a big part in

Wine & Food Festival returns to Richmond from PAGE 1 the decision making, and Peter says that Rotary want to encourage people to walk or cycle if they can. “We also just really want to see that facility being used, because it’s a fantastic area for the community.” Despite the venue change, Peter says that it’s no surprise why the festival is still so popular after 16 years. “It’s an event that shows off great local wine, beer and food, and good local talent. The tickets are cheap, and people know they can come and have a fun, safe time with their friends.” The festival is the major fundraising event for Rotary, and since its inception in 2003, all funds raised through the festival have been put back into Nelson and Tasman community organisations. In the last 10 years, over $360,000

all the money raised goes back into their community. It benefits everyone that attends in one way or another.”

Despite the cancellation earlier this year, due to drought and fire risk, the Rotary was still able to raise $4000 through a charity concert with the help of the New Zealand Army Band, and organiser Cynthia Martin says they made the right call, with many of the volunteers needed to make the festival a success preoccupied with the fire. “Everyone was just stretched. We felt it would have been irresponsible for us to take resources and manpower away from the fire effort.” While there are already concerns throughout the region of another hot, dry summer, Peter says that Rotary is aware of the fire risk, but that the Festival should go ahead this time. “The grounds are maintained, and the grass is regularly cut, and there’s a lot of shade so we’re aware of the concerns.”

New home for coffee shack

Rebel 500

Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Richmond has changed a lot in the last 15 years. Sundial Square has been upgraded, the region has had three mayors, and Queen Street has been completely revamped. One constant? The coffee shack. Rebecca Hockey has been making coffee in Sundial Square for 15 years, but on December 13 she will be serving up her last brew for Richmond residents. “Coffee culture wasn’t a thing in Richmond back when I started, there were only five places that served coffee.” Now, there are 20. Despite running the business for 15 years, her passion for coffee and a good yarn haven’t diminished – Rebecca says its merely time for a change of scenery. The commute for regular customers might require a bit of a detour since she’ll be setting up at the Buller Gorge Swing Bridge. “I’m a country girl, and we’ve decided we want to get the kids out of town and give them a different lifestyle. It works out great because obviously, my business is mobile.” What will she miss the most? The people she’s gotten to know over the last 15 years.

Friends meeting before work, mothers and daughters heading to school, people networking. I feel like I’ve grown with that.” While she was apprehensive at first, after a trial over Labour weekend at the Buller Gorge, Rebecca realised the potential. “I discovered that it was doable – there’s a need there.” For those concerned about missing out on their coffee,

don’t be too worried. The spot has been sought after for years, and Rebecca says she wouldn’t be surprised to see something new there the next time she comes into Richmond. “It’s a great location, and I’ve loved being here.” For now, though, she’s looking forward to a new start. “I’m excited about a change. I’ll get to meet so many travellers, and hopefully one or two familiar faces.”

Fireworks a cause for concern this summer Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

For some, letting off fireworks on Christmas or New Year’s Eve might all be a bit of fun and games, but local firefighters say they are painfully aware of the danger that fireworks can pose during the summer months. Ian Reade, Principal Rural Fire Officer for Nelson Tasman, is cautioning people against hold-

ing on to their fireworks to use over the summer months. The Government restricted the sale of fireworks to a four-day period before Guy Fawkes and increased the purchase age to 18 back in 2007, but this doesn’t stop people from holding on to them to use during the drier summer months. Ian says that it’s an experience they’ve seen before, and that people should think twice before holding on to fireworks. “It poses

a huge risk for our community every year we see fires started by fireworks in summer.” The topic is close to home this summer, after the forest fire that devastated the Tasman region earlier in the year. “That huge fire started from one

tiny spark. It’s easy to get one spark from setting off fireworks.” One spark could be all it takes to turn into another catastrophe. “All they have to do is go to the wrong area where people can’t get to quickly and we’ve got another catastrophe on our hands.” Ian’s advice to anyone holding out for New Year’s fireworks in the back yard? “Don’t do it. Would you want a huge fire like this year’s one on your conscience?”

The cost of fireworks? Data released from ACC reveals that firework related injuries have cost ACC nearly $3.3 million over the last ten years, with nearly 4000 people making a claim. The Nelson region had the highest payout in the last four-year period, with a total of $327,000 payed out in ACC claims.

teers, Grace and Bella were celebrated in style last month. The women were helicoptered into Greenacres Golf Course where colleagues formed a guard of honor as they entered to receive their gold stars, in recognition of their long service. “I can’t believe we have done it, it feels really good to get to this point,” says Bella. She says they joined the brigade just one month apart as young mothers in the mid-1990s. “We have faced a lot of personal challenges, mentally, physically, we have been pushed to the limit of our abilities at times,” Bell says. “When I have stopped and

They were the first women to join their station and 25 years later, firewomen Grace and Bella Clarke have been recognised for their selfless service to the region. From fires to floods and fatal accidents, the sisters-in-law have had countless Christmas dinners, birthdays and night’s sleep interrupted with a callout. The women have served as firefighters, secretary treasurer, peer support, canteen manager and, most recently, in risk reduction at the Appleby Fire Station. After a quarter century as volun-

thought about it and what we have put ourselves through, I am proud.” They say the longest and most difficult job the women faced was this year’s Tasman fires. Grace was down south when the blaze first began while Bella was driving into Nelson and saw that this was a big one. “I won’t say what I said to myself.” From day one, until the last flame was extinguished, Bella worked 200 hours during the emergency in the incident management team. “It was really hard, but it was equally rewarding, the organisa-

They say it is just the nature of the job. “When you leave home, you don’t know when you’ll be back,” Grace says. “You might be away for one hour, you might be gone all night.” Bella and Grace agree their work would not have been possible without the support of their husbands. They say though they never once feared for their lives during the 25 years, it was never that case for their children. “The golden rule is all about personal safety, but our kids didn’t understand this,” Grace says. “They were always sure to say ‘I love you mum, be safe,’ when I’d leave.” Their roles have evolved from mainly scrub fires but now go to

motor vehicle accidents and medical emergencies. “We have had some unpleasant ones, but you process your way through those,” says Bella. A particularly painful memory occurred on New Year’s Eve two years ago in the form of a fatal car crash. “I remember thinking ‘that person is not going home tonight’, and some mother is going to get the call that their child isn’t coming home,” says Grace. Though they may not have another 25 in them, as they hope to spend some more time with family, they have a few more years left at least. They hope to encourage more women to volunteer. “Believe in yourself. Women think they are not strong enough but it’s not actually about whether you’re strong. Yes, you do have to do some physical things, like dragging a hose up a hill, but you just do it.”

When Shane Thompson was approached last year to enter the New Zealand Beard and Moustache Competition, he did it ‘for a bit of fun.’ But after he took first place and then did it again this year, things got serious. “This is five years of growth

now,” says Shane, “and it’s not easy looking after hair this long, it gets caught in things and people like to pull it, sometimes without asking first.” This year his partner Suzanne Walding also entered in the Whisterina category. This category is for the ladies and they fashion beards out of real or fake hair or as Suzanne did material. With Tim Burton as her

inspiration, she came up with her design, managing to take out first place. “I love going to the competitions, great people, loads of fun and the proceeds go to Lifeline,” says Suzanne. The World Beard and Moustache Championships which are every two years will be held next in 2021 and will be here in New Zealand for the first time.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Then try a Teeter WHY INVERSION?

Because in most cases it works! Inversion Therapy is the oldest recorded medical cure for back issues, first recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC, otherwise known as spinal traction. Traction was used by modern hospitals for many years however because it is a slow process and ties up hospital beds for many weeks, they recently stopped using the treatment. Inversion Therapy is gentle and relaxing if done properly and has many other benefits apart from relieving back pain, it helps realign the spine and pelvic area, loosens up tight muscles, increases oxygen to the brain, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system and has many other benefits.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

Inversion NZ have been teaching people how to use this treatment for over twelve years, it is an amazing process with most people getting off the Teeter pain free for the first time in years or with their pain substantially reduced. The relief usually lasts around 30 minutes to three hours and as the pain returns you use the machine again, after using this method of treatment, in a few weeks the relief increases, which is the discs starting to retain more fluid, muscles starting to loosen up and the body coming back into alignment. In our experience most people are pain free in around three months, then the Teeter is used daily to maintain the health of the body.

WHY TEETER?

Frank Harwood (84 at time of picture) using his Teeter, Frank’s been Inverting for over eleven years and has found it keeps him young

The biggest issue with inversion tables is there is no safety standards that need to be met. Because of this, other brands use mild steel for 100% of the metal involved. Mild steel is great for static loads, in other words things that don’t move such as chairs, tables etc, however with Inversion Therapy there is considerable movement and this movement causes mild steel to flex. Because it always flexes in the same place it eventually causes metal fatigue and can result in failure. All Teeters are manufactured for extreme safety. Heat treated high tensile steel has been used in all areas subjected to stress. High tensile steel is far stronger and most importantly does not flex. This means Teeters are the strongest and safest tables on the market today.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

Nelson is set to host over 600 motorcycle enthusiasts in February with the third annual ‘The Gathering’ event set to be held in the region next year. The event, which is in its third year, will be held in the South Island for the first time and will be based at the Ocean Lodge Hotel on February 14 and 15 with a preregistration night the night before. Organiser Evan Still says after hosting two successful events in Whitianga in 2018 and 2019, he was keen to bring it to Nelson. “I was looking for somewhere in the South Island and we wanted somewhere that wasn’t as big and we wanted a venue with a personal touch.” Evan says the event has taken off from a casual conversation between two mates a couple of years ago. “Back in 2017, Harley Davidson decided to stop hosting their nationals and I said to a mate that it can’t be that hard to organise a piss up in a brewery. Six weeks later we were sold

Matthew Enright 027 475 6744

mates.” While the event is promoted as a ‘BEARS’ rally for British, European and American motorcycles, Evan says he does not care what bikes

people ride as long as they’re having a good time. “We know there is a large number of riders in the Nelson region because it is one of the better areas to ride in New Zealand. I’ve done more than 300,000km over the last 20 years around New Zealand and one of my favourite destinations is through Nelson, West Coast and through to Takaka ride,” Evan says. Each year, the event also supports a charity with Wakefield School’s outdoor pool project benefiting from the weekend. “We raised $12000 for Sea Scouts in Whitianga over the two years and Wakefield School has a project we want to get behind this year. There will be a ‘Show and Shine’ event at the Filco Harley Davidson dealership in Nelson on the Saturday morning before we have a ride out to Wakefield to have lunch before returning to the Ocean Lodge for a night of music.” People who are interested in taking part can visit www. thegathering.bike or they can keep an eye on Filco’s Facebook page.

Relaxed beachside motorhome show attracts new exhibitors The Warratahs, who played a successful show in Richmond earlier this year, will return to the region later this month to perform at the Boathouse. Photo: Supplied.

Warratahs return to the region Staff Reporter Popular New Zealand band ‘The Warratahs’ will return to the region to perform on November 29, at the Boathouse in Nelson, after headlining a successful concert at the Richmond showgrounds earlier in the year to thank volunteers for their work in battling the Pigeon Valley forest fires. The songs by lead singer and guitarist Barry Saunders are etched into New Zealand’s memory, and their artistry was rewarded in 2016 when their album Runaway Days took out Best Country Music album at

the Gore Gold Guitars Awards. Their recent double album ‘Drivin’ Wheel’ is a collection of their songs and style since the band’s beginning in 1986. To date, a total of eight albums showcase the group and their poignant music. These are songs that paint a picture of New Zealand, from the nostalgia and majesty of the provinces and the cities, to the heartbreak of the Christchurch quake. The band has appeared with Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Billy Joel, Lucinda Williams and Leann Rimes, amongst other international stars.

For over 10 years, the Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show 2019 has been held at our region’s idyllic motor camp by the beach, attracting more than 2000 people annually, with all monies raised going to charity. The event showcases New Zealand’s leading motorhome, campervan and caravan suppliers and designers, with new and used privately-owned motorhomes also available for sale and lease. So it’s great for people who are considering buying a motorhome or caravan or upgrading their existing one. This year’s show will take place this weekend on Saturday, November 16th and Sunday, November 17th. Organiser Jan Aberhart says the relaxed nature of the show and the overall success of the event has seen it grow exponentially. “It’s the partnership with Tahuna Beach Kiwi

Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park and Motel Operations Manager Peter Fraser and Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show organiser Jan Aberhart. this year’s show, there will be a couple of motorhomes on display by local businessmen which are in excess of $300,000 which are being brought down from Auckland.” Jan says there will also be a

The Nelson Pine Industries Chamber of Commerce Business awards are always a highlight on the business calendar and this year was no exception. Held at the Trafalgar Centre on November 1st, the black-tie dinner was a very special evening of networking and celebrating success in the local business sector. The winners of the different award categories were recognised for their innovation and creativity:

Nelson business - FuturEcology received the Datacom Clever Business Award, having developed a bio-degradable plant guard - The EmGuard - in 2017 for its use in forest regeneration and restoration projects. The business was established in 2014 to focus on conservation and ecology projects. Robert, Jan and Emma Fryer and the team from FuturEcology are on a mission to save the planet, one tree at a time. Their combined experience in nursery production, conservation, ecology, recreation, management and local government gives the business its uniqueness. Their goal is to provide customers with practical solutions allowing them to make positive environmental gains. The Emguard they created was designed to be user-friendly, cost-effective and able to replace plastic. These are providing to be extremely popular, selling from Kaitaia to Bluff and now moving into the Australian market. “We are encouraged by the opportunities arising out of today’s changing environmental consciousness and the

chance to make a positive difference,” says Jan. It was a triumphant night for vibrant young company Lumiere which was named winner of the Nelson Weekly/Waimea Weekly Emerging Business Award. Established just 18 months ago, Lumiere combines the talents of co-founder Joshua Kirk, who has an extensive background in video production, with award-winning photographer and co-founder, Tim Williams. The judges described Lumiere as an exciting emerging business that is fast making a mark in their industry. They were impressed with Tim and Joshua’s

business acumen and their commitment to staff well-being. ‘For a young business, it’s great to see them growing as leaders in our business community. They more recently formed Tasman Bay Guardians with a passionate whanau of knowledgeable friends to create a professional aquatic delivery team, educating kids, the wider community, facilitating clean-ups, environmental governance groups, habitat restoration and community collaboration. Abel Tasman Eco Tours are thrilled to have won the Nelson Tasman Business Awards Small Business Category and couldn't have done it without Tasman Bay Guardians and their friends and family. Hearing Nelson, a registered charity since 1953, is very appreciative of being awarded the Community impact award in recognition of its important work in the community. 8,500 face to face contacts were made in 2019 delivering the charities purpose of improving the lives of the 1 in 6 people living with a hearing loss and preventing hearing loss.

HEARING Passionate about your hearing

The charity provides community hearing aid clinics and cleaning services for residents living in rest homes, training to carers and support workers in hearing aid management, sales of assisted devices and advice and information on hearing. Its professional and engaging educational programmes aim at preventing hearing loss with our youth, through dangerous decibel workshops to schools. Children and youth are informed that once you damage your hearing it won’t come back and encouraged to listen to their music through ear buds or headphones for a maximum of 90 minutes a day at half volume. In early 2019, Hearing Nelson began to offer screening hearing tests, to provide a supportive context that offered independent advice to people who had recognised signs of hearing loss. Hearing Nelson encourage early intervention due to the association with other health and well-being issues such as cognitive functioning and social isolation. To hear means to connect! Having already won the NMIT Large Business Award, New Zealand King Salmon was later announced as the overall winner, taking home the Nelson Pine Industries Supreme Business Award. The judges said they were blown away with the company’s national and international success, while also mentioning that its brands were incredibly strong and were sought after by restaurants all over the world. They were equally impressed with the degree of value and support NZ King Salmon brought to our region, particularly all the local businesses they engage with. The judges said that it is remarkable that a Nelson business now supplies over 50 percent of the world’s King salmon. Founded in 1996, New Zealand King Salmon offers a variety of delicious, versatile and sustainable salmon products to a wide range of discerning chefs, retailers and wholesalers in New Zealand and worldwide. The company’s brands include Regal Salmon and Southern Ocean (available in New Zealand only) and Premium Foodservice brand, Ōra King.

St Paul’s Lutheran Community Church Upper Moutere “Slow down, you move to fast You’ve got to make the morning last...” Who knew that these lyrics from Simon and Garfunkel, learned in primary school sing-a-longs, would come back to me while lying in bed thinking about life as a profound little refrain to remind me to do just that. Slow down. Now, it’s been a while since anyone in all seriousness accused me of moving too fast but I know all too well the busy-ness that life brings. This can be especially true as we enter into the all too predictable, headlong, free fall rush that is Christmas and the end of the year. The days are longer and warmer and with more daylight

and so we try to pack more in. And while that can be great- BBQ’s, time with family and friends, beach days; it can also mean deadlines, end of year expectations and financial worries. Sometimes even the good stuff can feel like it’s swamping us. So, before it all comes rushing in, I’d like to take a moment and invite you to breathe. To pause. To be still. It doesn’t need to be for a long time but just stop. Find a moment or two within each day to be with God and think about who you are and whose you are. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to “Be still and know that I am God.” I believe there is a real connection between the being still and the knowing. Perhaps the great promise of Christmas as we cel-

ebrate the birth of Jesus is in his other name, Immanuel- God with us. I think we can miss out on thatknowing that God is with us and for us. How might a simple moment like that affect you and your day? May you get a sense of peace? A sense of thankfulness? An awareness of the needs of others? You may even become more aware of your own needs. What are the important things that may be being missed amongst all the doing? So, there it is, an invitation to slow down, not to make the morning last but to be still and know God and then see what He does with it from there. Nothing fancy. Nothing flash. Just you, God and a moment or two of time well spent being still.

speedway Wayne Martin 15,000 horses stampede in Richmond. Well close to 15,000 horsepower anyway, with the inaugural PTS Superstock Stampede kicking into gear this weekend at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. This meeting, bought to you in association with Barclay Engravers, sees some of the best Superstock drivers in the country converge here in Nelson to contest the PTS Superstock Stampede Trophy and the large amount of cash that’s on offer to the winner. This event has cost the local club around $20,000 to host and it all helps to attract the high-calibre field of drivers and cars to en-

tertain what should be a large crowd. Add to that we will be hosting the 900hp fire-breathing Sprintcars as we host a round of the award winning Hydraulink War of the Wings and then, to add to that again, we are hosting the Youth Ministock best pairs with competitors travelling from all over the country for this one as well. So, all in all this is a huge show with something for everyone. The local speedway fans will be out in force for this big show as it’s been a season or two since we have had a big field of Superstocks doing laps around the local track and the sound alone of a full field of these monsters

Wanderers runners-up in Tasman Sevens Staff Reporter The Taylors Wanderers Sports Club had a full weekend booked for sport on Saturday with three cricket matches scheduled and the sevens rugby team travelling to Renwick for the second leg of the Tasman Sevens Championships. Unfortunately, weather intervened in all the cricket games and the premier game was abandoned when play ceased at 3pm with Wanderers at 72 for 3. Having returned to premier status with a combined WanderersMotueka side, the team is still to record a victory although improving performances indicate that that it may not be too far away. Having also entered a team in college grade made up of local Brightwater and Wakefield boys, under the captaincy of Matt Anderson, Wanderers is keen to see the development at this level where the boys play T25 matches. This format is proving very popular, but unfortunately this game too was rained out. The Taylors Wanderers rugby teams departed early on Saturday to Renwick to compete in both the men’s and women’s cham-

Tayne Lockwood showing a clean pair of heels to Renwick in the final, scoring the first try. Photo: Supplied. pionship decider, following on from the previous Saturday in Motueka, where Wanderers lost the final to Waimea Old Boys, finishing second and the women received the same placing behind the same club in their grade. The championship winner is declared after results of both tournaments, and WOB started the day on 22 points and Wanderers on 19 after Motueka. Renwick and Central had not travelled last week so little was known about either teams, however when they defeated WOB and Marist in pool play it was obvious that the standard was higher this week.

Wanderers first game was against Central and both teams scored three tries each but thanks to Tayne Lockwood’s two conversions Wanderers were successful 19-15. The second game saw Nelson College accounted for 52-0 in an excellent display of sevens by the entire squad, again complemented by fine goal-kicking from Lockwood and Jake Berthelsen. The final pool game against Kahurangi started in a similar fashion to the Nelson College match and Wanderers ran out to an early 15-0 lead, before a break away by Kahurangi closed the gap to

15-7 then two quick tries after halftime had them in the lead 1715 with two minutes to play. A try to Lockwood, and his inevitable conversion saw Wanderers prevail 22-17, where they met long standing rivals, WOB in the semi-final. Playing very good 7s rugby, Wanderers avenged the Motueka loss with two tries in each half; Steve Soper and Fletcher Matthews in the first half, then Jake Berthelsen and Chris Halaufia in the second, to the solitary try by WOB for the 24-5 victory. Renwick defeated Kahurangi in the other semi, then played

WOB for 3rd place. A loss here for WOB would have resulted in Wanderers winning the championship outright, but in a dramatic finish WOB scored after full time to clinch third place and 17 additional points to finish on 39. The final was another good contest, with Wanderers scoring first through Lockwood but Renwick just had the little extra polish and scored three good tries for the 15-5 victory, and for the second consecutive week Wanderers had to settle for second and 19 more points, which amounted to a total of 38, and by virtue of a solitary point WOB were Tasman Sevens champions for the season. The Wanderers team of Tone Vaka, Steve Soper, Jayden Woolley, Jake Berthelsen, Graeme Urqhart, Fletcher Matthews, Tayne Lockwood, Nino Peniamino, Bobby Palmer, Justin Barr, Chris Halaufia and Naki Saumaki, represented the club well and showed very positive signs for the next season. With only five teams entered in the women’s championship, play followed a round robin format and Taylors Wanderers started with a 50-0 win over Marist, then followed with a narrow loss to Riwaka 14-17.

Sea Swim not dampened by conditions Peter Gibbs The Port Nelson Sea Swim Series opened on a sombre note on Thursday, with a modest turnout of 105 swimmers on a cold windy night, with sea temperatures of 16 degrees. By comparison, last year’s opening night was cancelled, but 159 swimmers appeared the following week. Conditions didn’t detract from the enthusiasm or the standard of competition, with both of last summer’s series winners toppled by the narrowest of margins. Luke Kelly set out in his usual fashion in the

long swim of 700m, unable to escape the lead role while others stuck to his heels. The course headed south into the tide from the Nelson Yacht Club ramp, utilising moored yachts as marker buoys for a triangular course, returning with a slight current but knocking in to waves from the north. The lead bunch stayed close together until the final sprint from an offshore yacht to the

finish line. Bendi Kepess upped his game over the final 50 metres for the narrowest of wins over last summer’s winner Kelly. Within a second, Fergus Drummond and women’s winner Sierra Thomas touched shore, with Oxford Bayley, last year’s women’s winner Abbey Smale, 47-yearold Terry Bone, Nic Hall and Sophie Alexander. Hamish Neill, 56, belied his

age to round out the top ten finishers, but he was only two places ahead of 69-year-old Ben Van Dyke, who was closely followed by Denis Cooper (60), proving that open water swimming is truly a sport for all ages. In the short swim of 350m, Brooke Swan was a clear winner, swimming strongly to win by 26 seconds from Emily Chadderton, with a further gap to Mia Langley, Caitlin

Alexander, Eva Ellena and Corey Tremblay. Nicola Le Bas Thurlow (53) broke a teen deadlock to finish in tenth place. Swimmers face a season of 18 swims in the Thursday night Port Nelson Series, while the four-race Clements Endurance Series extends the distances on selected weekends dotted through the season (starting with the 2km Opening Splash on November 24).

Ellie Ross might be young, but she knows a thing or two when it comes to croquet. In February this year she played the women’s world tournament in Hawkes Bay. Then, in April, she was selected to represent New Zealand at the Trans-Tasman match in Australia, with the top four women and top men and she nailed it. “We won that title. We beat Australia and that was really cool because I was in Melbourne and four months ago I went to England to play in the under 21 worlds and I came 6th in the world,” says Ellie. She’s only been playing the sport for the last four years. “I started about four years ago when one of my teachers at Nelson College for Girls asked if anyone wanted to go down to the club. I stepped up and said I’d like to go. I came down and I’ve got hooked on to it,” she says. Ellie says croquet is a fantastic game, and that everyone should try it. “I like croquet. It introduces you to different people. It’s an excellent way to get involved in the community, I get to travel, and I enjoy

She is one of the players who will take part in the ‘Have a Go Day’, at the Richmond Croquet Club (348 Queen St) on Saturday, 23 November, from 10am to 1pm. “I think it’s a cool game and it gets people involved and I would suggest, go down for

a day, have a try, because you will enjoy it and want to continue. It brings out the competitive side in people, which you don’t often see,” says Ellie. Richmond Croquet Club will supply all equipment and the players must wear flat sole shoes. Tea and coffee will also be available, but visitors should bring their own lunch.

Nelson matters

It is unusual for the Opposition to vote for a Government Bill. I am pleased and proud to have voted for the new Climate Change Response Act passed by parliament last week. I have long taken a keen interest in the science and issue of climate change and represented New Zealand as an MP and Minister at many of the global negotiations. Some of the end of world rhetoric is over the top but climate change is a serious risk. The new law establishes the Climate Change Commission that will recommend a timetable and means for reducing emissions. It is not a magic solution but it will help

us make progress. I have advocated for this approach as a previous Environment and Climate Change Minister after seeing the success of this approach in the UK. Bold talk on climate change is much easier than reducing emissions. Helen Clark, like Jacinda Ardern, referred to climate change as this generation’s nuclear free moment. The Clark Government committed to zero nett emissions but they went up 10% over those nine years. National did better over the next nine years with 0% emissions growth despite the population growing 15 % and the economy 25%. The current Labour NZ First Green Government

has not reduced emissions. They are up over the last two years with big increases from burning coal for electricity. We need practical measures that will get emissions down. That is why National in government insulated 400,000 homes, increased renewable electricity from 65% to 85%, electrified Auckland Rail, introduced incentives for electric cars and a phasing out of powerful synthetic greenhouse gases used for refrigeration. I made a personal choice a decade ago to purchase NZ’s first 100% electric car with my Mitsubishi Miev. It cost $67,000 as compared to the petrol equivalent of $27,000.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

The price difference has come down but it is still significant. We need to be upfront about these costs. We also need to be careful of unintended consequences. The Tiwai Point aluminium smelter uses renewable hydroelectricity. Most smelters in the world are powered by burning coal. If we impose major climate change costs on it that forces its closure, the aluminium will be made elsewhere. We would increase global emissions and put 1,000 Southlanders out of work. We need to be equally careful with our farmers. New Zealand has only 1% of the world’s cows and 2% of the world’s sheep. Our farmers are

the most efficient with lower emissions. It would be unfair for us to impose on them climate change costs that none of their global competitors face. It would just move food production to other countries. New Zealand emits 0.2% of the world’s greenhouse gases. We cannot solve this problem alone. That is why National put so much effort internationally into helping secure the Paris Agreement in 2016 to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C. We need to meet our commitment to cut emissions by 30% by 2030. This new cross party Act is an important step forward in achieving this. Advt.

TAYLOR

Dr. Paul Gordon After an eventful and fascinating journey, Dr. Paul Taylor passed away at home in Nelson early on Sunday, November 10th. Born in 1945 on the Wirral Peninsula in England, Paul was lucky to experience and contribute to many communities around the world through his devoted work as a paediatrician, culminating at Nelson Hospital. Much loved husband and friend of Frances for 48 years, father of Angus and Damian, and treasured grandfather of Elvie, Alexander, Moses, and Delta. He was generously and capably supported in his last stages of life by wonderful friends and compassionate professionals to whom his family are deeply grateful. In particular Kerry, Sam, Lorraine, and everyone from Nurse Maude, and the Nelson Tasman Hospice for the invaluable service they provide. He would have been happy to know a donation to savethechildren. org.nz was made in his memory in lieu of flowers. A gathering to celebrate Paul’s life will take place at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, Nile St, from 5 to 7pm. on Thursday, November.14.
