Wright claims assault by pensioner Waimea Village owner Michael Wright has called the police on a 65 year old woman who he accused of assaulting him – with a small plastic pen. The alleged assault happened almost two weeks ago after resident Marian Creyle was told she was three months in arrears and had “seriously breached” her lease contract. She confirmed with the bank that her monthly payments were current and walked over to talk to him about it when

a verbal stoush broke out. theirs but then it got quite nasty, he got right up in my Marian says it got heated as she was “filling them face and I had to put my in on their pedigree” and arm up across my face and when Michael was in her he was just yelling and his face yelling at her she face was shaking. Michael declined to comment to Waimea Weekly about the incident but the residents’ committee and the Wrights have been doing battle over the monthly lease SEE PAGE 2

Restored aircraft ready for takeoff Phillip Rollo The Air Nelson hangar is temporarily holding what could be the only flying Avro Anson Mk I bomber in existence. After almost a decade of museum life, it was fully restored by Wakefield man Bill Reid and the 1943 aircraft looks set to be flying as early as next weekend. The project has taken Bill ten years to complete. The length of time had to be stretched as a world-wide search for parts took much longer than expected because of its rarity. Bill, along with his wife Robyn, travelled to Australia and England on numerous occasions, sometimes staying for up to a month, just to find the missing pieces to complete the restoration and to venture through archives. The Reids previously owned a commercial helicopter business but sold the company in 2002. Bill was always fond of vintage aeroplanes, having previously owned a Tiger Moth when he and Robyn first met, so scoped SEE PAGE 4

“When the lights change everyone gets quite confused. It’s just getting into Queen St and during the busy hours.”

“Every night those traffic lights by Gladstone Rd are a real pain. They’re not quick enough and they hold the traffic up.”

“They need traffic lights up by Waimea Village. You can’t get across the God damn road half the time.”

Wright claims assault by 65 year old FROM PAGE 1 residents’ pay and this latest incident will not ease tensions. Marian says she was upset to get a letter telling her she was breaching her contract and says the behaviour of Michael was “disgusting”. “He kept on yelling out ‘you wanna hit me don’t ya? You wanna hit me.’ I said to

him ‘if I hit you Michael you won’t get back up’, because I’m a big girl.” Police visited Marian, who lives alone, and told her that the Wrights laid a complaint because she pushed Michael in the chest with a pen. Police gave her a verbal warning for minor assault. “I missed the police when they first came but my neighbour told me they

had come and I thought ‘oh fancy them calling the police, because I felt we were both at fault’. “I think he’s just being a wimp and he likes to control older women. I’m not going to have him wrongly accuse me and not get away with it. “All he had to do was look up on his computer or bank statements to see that I’d paid, pretty simple.”

Restored 1943 bomber ready for first takeoff FROM PAGE 1

Bill and Robyn Reid’s 1943 Avro Anson Mk I bomber was tested on the out what was available on the current market. Nelson Airport runway on Sunday afternoon. The aircraft was used for taxi That search led the Reids to an aero museum that was closing down in Wangaratta, Australia. runs only and has not yet flown. Photo: Phillip Rollo. They were immediately hooked on an Avro Anson, which was up for sale. The Reids decided to purchase the twin-engine aircraft, so it was dismantled and shipped back to New Zealand in pieces. It had last been used in a film titled Half a World Away in 1992. The Reid’s first task involved the construction of a purpose-built hangar at their 88 Valley property in Wakefield to restore the aeroplane over what was expected to be the next three years. The restoration process began in early 2003 and has lasted right up until now. Since then there has been four different fuselages come and go – each having contributed to the finished aero‘Come and support your favourite band’ plane – and numerous frantic trips across the globe scouring for parts. As often the case with rare antique items, owners are not always willing to sell and the Reids had to swap most of the parts for other rare items they had collected over the years. More than 7000 Avro Anson Mk I bombers were built in the 1930s and 1940s by the British, some being shipped off to the Royal Australian Air Force and the NZ Royal Air Force. This particular Avro Anson was retired in the 50s and sold into the civil market. None of the Avro Anson Mk Is with wooden wings were allowed to fly after 1963 unless they had their

wooden wings replaced by metal ones. The previous owner of the Reid’s Avro Anson was able to source metal wings and tail plate, enabling it to be able to continue to fly. Two experienced aircraft engineers, Peter Lacy and Mike Cole, have been working on the project alongside Bill since 2003. Robyn explains that the length of time was also stretched because it was paramount the aircraft retained its authenticity right down to the finest detail. “Everything down to the little compass paper is totally authentic. It gives people the chance to see what it was really like,” she says. It also features a gun turret, replicating its wartime image. Its primary use will be at air shows around New Zealand, but Robyn and Bill have not ruled out personal overseas trips in the 1943 bomber. Because of its rarity, Robyn was unable to put a price tag on the aircraft. However, the fuel cost to fill it up is around the $1000 mark and that gives the Reids between three to four hours flying time. Bill and Robyn will hold a public display when the Avro Anson has been flight tested and is confirmed ready for use. They spent the weekend just gone, taxiing the aircraft around Nelson airport, doing final checks with one of their test pilots New Zealand Royal Air Force Pilot Sean Perrett, who also flies Brendon Deere’s Spitfire. The aircraft must be signed off by chief engineer, Mike, before it is able to fly. Only then will Bill be taught how to fly his own plane.

Satellite school opens on Henley/Waimea campus The official opening of a new $1.2 million satellite facility for special needs children from Richmond and Waimea is a positive step forward for education in the Nelson region, says National MP Nick Smith. Nick officially opened the Maitai School classroom on the same campus as Henley Kindergarten, Henley School, Waimea Intermediate School and Waimea College last Friday. The satellite school caters for ten children from Year 0 through to Year 8. They will also be involved at Henley School and Waimea Intermediate School’s curriculum when deemed able. At present the satellite classroom currently has five Henley School principal John Armstrong with student Megan Clews, students, with two more to be enrolled next week. 10, outside the new Maitai Satellite School. Previously, Maitai School students from the Tas-

man area had to catch taxis into the city. Nick says satellite classrooms are the best option for some students with significant disabilities because they combine the best worlds of a mainstream school environment with the support of specialist teachers. “This initiative makes perfect sense for children, their families and the wider community. Previously special needs children from this part of the region either had to travel into Nelson for their education or become mainstreamed,” he says. The satellite school had been in process since 2009, says Henley School principal John Armstrong, but it was only when the Ministry of Education raised the initial funding from $500,000 to $1.2 million that it could actually go ahead.

Sonographer wins award Richmond is now home to the Graduate Sonographer of the Year. Haidee Janetzki of Koru Ultrasound won the industry award earlier in the month. The award is recognised by the Australian Sonographers Association. Haidee was nominated for New Zealand Sonographer of the Year and Graduate Sonographer of the Year. Haidee had a set of four questions

to answer for each of the catergories. She had to write a 250 word essay on each question to the association, which she was then judged on, along with her resume. Haidee’s resume included a journal published in the association’s magazine and training in muscular skeletal applications. Haidee, who was born in Australia, says the panel favoured her and other sonographers that attempted to further their career.

Richmond hit by vandalism A spat of broken letterboxes in Richmond was likely caused by mischievous teenagers, say police. Last week the Richmond Community Police reported a high number of wilful damage occurrences which left a trail of destruction in Oxford St, Wensley Rd and Otia Drive. Roeske St. Farnham Drv and Hunt St were other areas targeted during the period of Queen’s Birthday Weekend. The majority of those offences were vandalism to letterboxes. Community constable Glen Lloyd Jones says wilful damage to letterboxes is often caused by high school students around the time of school breaks so it was likely they were causing the problems again. “It comes and goes. We normally experience a lot of letterbox damage occurring on school holidays or long weekends,” says Glen. Police were not sure if it was an individual or a group causing the damage and say it is often difficult to trace the vandalism to any suspects. “Unfortunately people don’t hear it or see it until the next day so it’s very hard to track down who these people are.”

Locals taste early success

The Ranzau School book quiz team; Abbey Canton, James Ranson, Joshua Hurst and Jediah Frethey prepare for this week’s quiz.

Around 3000 punters went through the gates on day one of the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s winter meeting at Richmond Park. A rescheduled meeting saw the first day of races moved from Friday to Sunday as Christchurch horses were halted by the icy weather en route to Nelson. One hundred of the 177 nominations were coming via Christchurch so organisers made the call to postpone the date. A chill was still there on Sunday but entrants warmed to the races and hot coffee and were treated by some early success by two local horses. Bill Morgan’s Colonel Custard driven by Murray Pash finished the Cavalier Trotting Products/

Atomic Travel 2400m Pace in fourth place while Robert Stuart’s Jass, also driven by Murray, ran third in the Golden Girls Series 1609m Mobile Pace. Harness Racing Club president John McKenzie was “very happy” with the public’s response despite the rescheduling. “A lot of people had probably arranged to take time off work on the Friday but it’s one of those things. I think we did the right thing postponing the event.” There was a turnover of $107,000 on Sunday, approximately $3000 down from last year. Day two was highlighted by the Nelson Winter Cup. It was held yesterday afternoon after the Waimea Weekly went to print.

Champs ready to book another win The Ranzau Rippa Readers might wear their PJ’s to Wednesday’s Kids Book Quiz but there will certainly be no resting as the defending champions look to secure trophy number two. The Kids Book Quiz sees Year 5 and 6 students from five of Tasman’s

schools answer questions based on books they have read this year, including Super Finn, The Flytrap Snaps and New Zealand Hall of Fame. It will be held at the Tasman District Library. Last year Ranzau School won by half a point.

U-turn saves technology at intermediates Waimea Intermediate School’s technology department is safe for the long term, following the government’s decision to back track on class ratio sizes. The change, implemented in the 2012 Budget, would have seen specialist technology teachers lose their jobs because of the way they had been traditionally funded. Waimea Intermediate School principal Cleve Shearer says the decision to cut technology teachers was the “most harmful decision” he had witnessed in his 30 years of working in education. “It definitely wasn’t thought through. Clearly someone in the Ministry of Education has made a mistake,” he says. When the news of the u-turn went public on Thursday, Cleve put the word over the school’s intercom. “I told the technology staff and there was cheering. I could almost hear the building shake with all of the applause, it was great.” National MP Nick Smith spent a lot of time with the technology students and teachers last week. He made the visit to Waimea Intermediate School following meetings with Cleve and the region’s other intermediate headmasters. Hard technology teacher Chris Bowen says the result is a win for education. “The parents won. I never felt so supported ever. It was good news for the kids.”

From My Desk I love customer service… To walk into a store or café and be approached, asking how they can help, showing me a new item which has just arrived, or even a new winter addition to the menu, immediately makes me feel welcome and that I am valuable to this person. Entering Andrea Biani, you will be greeted by Angie and her team of ladies. Specializing in women’s fashion footwear and accessories sourced from around the world, the selection of boots, heels and stunning brands such as Jeffrey Campbell, Andrea Biani, Django & Juliette, Mollini, Briarwood and many more is a fabulous excuse to sit on their comfortable ottomans and try. The team has one aim and that is to offer their valued customers the best quality fashion range each season based on style, quality, range and fit, endeavoring to ensure that they give the best customer service so when you visit their store you will be made to feel welcome. They strive to exceed their customers’ expectations each and every visit. I value skills that our teams have and the passion that they have for their stores and being able to pass this on to you, our customers. At Fashion Island our culture and philosophy is simple: Give great customer service. Have a fabulous week, and I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

Aquatic centre installs chair lift

Anyone and everyone can access ASB Aquatic & Fitness Centre’s swimming pools now that a hydraulic chair lift has been installed. The $20,000 chairlift was donated by the Tasman District Council. It can carry up to 130 kg and is designed solely for pool use. ASB Aquatic & Fitness Centre facility manager Vaughan Hope has been busy fielding calls from the Stroke Foundation, the Amputee Society and other groups who are interested to use the equipment. It also works for people with minor injuries that find getting into the pool difficult. It allows access to all pools except the wave pool, which already has a wheel chair suited for water use.

Young country singing stars Jade and Jemma Gibson won the Best Junior Overall at the Gold Guitar Awards in Gore last weekend.

Murchison sisters’ golden win Murchison sisters Jade and Jemma Gibson were the toast of the town last week. The Murchison Area School students collected the prestigious Golden Guitar for Best Junior Overall Performance at the Golden Guitar Awards in Gore. Jemma also won the Best Country Rock Singer with Jade making the top four.

The Gibson sisters have been singing country music for the past five years but it was the first time they had made the trip down south for the awards. Jemma can also play the guitar and the banjo. However, when they perform they stick strictly to their vocals. They will perform as guest artists next year.

Westmeat are your local butcher boasting the freshest cuts of meat at the best price. Put a hearty meal on your table every night this winter with the help of the friendly and experienced butchers. They stock the best quality meats for all budgets, catering for low and high incomes, and everything between. The Richmond Westmeat franchise has become well respected even within the national Westmeat brand, often delivering meat to Picton, Takaka and throughout New Zealand. The thing that sets Westmeat apart from other butchers is their ability to keep prices on quality meat lower. Westmeat runs their own Angus cattle farms and is owned by a freezing company, cutting out the middle men wherever possible. This reduces costs dramatically and keeps prices lower for customers. Westmeat has a large team of experienced butchers breaking down the meat that is delivered fresh to the factory each morning. The factory is located just out the back of the retail store. The majority of meat is cut and packaged on site by the expert butchers, many of whom have decades of experience to produce the best cuts. Westmeats pride themselves in customer service and satisfaction. They have won the loyalty of many commercial clients due to their dedication and attention to detail, and their willingness to fulfil specified orders. One local restaurant, for instance, has the provision that they require their top quality steaks cut to a specific weight ready to be cooked and served,

If you’re having a party or barbecue, Westmeat can provide any meat delicacy you can think of, from sausages and steaks to an entire pig or lamb for the spit. There is a great range of cuts for beef, pork, lamb, veal and chicken, and venison and other specialty meats can be ordered in. Since the move to McGlashen Ave a year and a half ago, there has been a great response from the community. The new location provides the space to house the twenty-odd staff and the top-of-the-range machinery which produces the highest quality cuts, with an emphasis on precision and hygiene. for more than 20 customers to ensure your trip to Westmeat is as convenient and pleasant as possible. Westmeat began as a west coast butchery owned and operated by Jack Ferguson, a well known local entrepreneur and pioneer of butchery in New Zealand. This business originally consisted of a factory and wholesale cutting operation in Hokitika and ‘Meat Tavern’ shops in Hokitika and Greymouth, supplied by the West Coast Regional Abattoir. Westmeat has grown and nowadays is a dynamic, quality focused meat wholesaler which operates throughout the South Island, drawing on the strength of its parent company ANZCO Foods, one of NZ’s leading meat processors and exporters. Westmeat Richmond is managed by Kevin Krammer, who attributes Westmeat Richmond’s success to the dedicated staff who maintain the local feel while delivering specials which more than compete with the competitors. Much of the staff base has been with the team for years, with some in the butchery boasting more than 40 years with the company. Kevin himself has 38 years under his belt. The drive-through parking lot allows the convenience to drop in and grab something for dinner or to take the time to stock up. Westmeat

Softball player gains NZ selection Local softballer Megan Thomson has been named in the White Sox development team and will compete for her country in Australia next month. Megan, 18, has been asked to join the team as the catcher, a position in which she has excelled, despite her 6 foot 2 height which is not commonly seen in catchers. “I’ve never heard of a female catcher of my height before,” Megan says. “I was often told not to catch because I’m too tall. Height can be a disadvantage in getting up at speed and getting out of the way of the umpire’s view, but there are advantages in reach.” Megan took up the sport at Waimea Intermediate School, joining a boys-only team. Softball at-

tracted her as it wasn’t a mainstream sport that everyone gravitated towards. With a strapping boy pitching, the coach convinced the strong and sporty Megan to catch. And she took to it immediately, training every lunchtime, and enjoying the responsibility of controlling the game. After one season in a school-aged grade, Megan found herself playing in the Nelson Women’s League at age 13. It was also at this age she first played for her province – as catcher no less. Megan admits the prospect of being a fully fledged White Sox one day is “awesome.” She will compete at the Softball Australia International Youth Cup, being held in Sydney at the start of July.

The White way forward The birth of his first child has led former A-League forward Mike White back to Nelson. He spoke with Waimea Weekly reporter Phillip Rollo about life back in his hometown.

Former New Zealand Knights football player Mike White has returned to Nelson after the birth of his daughter Maddie. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Adding it up is their business. Go to

www.nmsnz.co.nz

When Mike White signed his first professional contract as an 18 year-old, he didn’t expect that just seven years later he’d find himself back playing at Saxton Field. The Welsh born former New Zealand Knights player is “back home indefinitely” following the birth of his first child and he has his sights firmly set on playing ASB Premiership in Nelson. Mike is one of the best players Richmond has ever produced. He has been an ever-present figure at domestic level, playing for Waitakere United, Canterbury United, YoungHeart Manawatu and Team Wellington and has represented New Zealand A on a tour to Vietnam, New Zealand Under-20 and New Zealand Under-17. He even played semi-professional football in Wales. Mike was playing Central Premier League football with Miramar Rangers and enjoying another season with Team Wellington when his partner Jamee Thomson gave birth to Maddie. So he decided to throw away the chance to play regularly under the nose of Wellington Phoenix scouts and move closer to his family. Having scored six goals in the past two matches for AMI Nelson Suburbs, Mike has proved he is still a level above anything on offer in the region. But things could have ended up much differently for the former Waimea College student. Mike made his A-League debut in 2006 and went on to make 11 appearances for the New Zealand Knights. He had just penned a two year contract extension when the club folded in 2007, ending his dream of playing professional football. “Even just thinking about it now it’s pretty disappoint-

ing. But at the end of the day that’s just football,” says Mike. “Within eight months of leaving school I was on a full-time wage playing football. But obviously you don’t get those opportunities everyday.” While short-lived, playing professionally is an obvious career highlight for Mike. But he also has fond memories of playing for Nelson Suburbs as a teenager. “You remember things when you win and I like winning.” Although he enjoyed playing for Nelson, Mike says there is only so much Mainland Premier League football you can play before you need to take the next step. Which, until now, has always involved skipping town and playing in Christchurch. Nelson has made a formal bid to New Zealand Football to be included in an expanded ASB Premiership. Mike told the Waimea Weekly last year that he would be the first person to put his hand up and play for the side if that did happen. So right now, he’s cautiously waiting for that outcome before committing to Canterbury United for another season. “Obviously I’ve represented some teams in the ASB Premiership but none of them have ever been my hometown. I’m a Nelson boy through and through and I want to represent Nelson and what better way than on a national stage. I’m just really hoping it does go ahead.” Mike was also in contact with “five or six” current ASB Premiership players who were interested in playing for a Nelson based national league side. He admits the focus must be on the local talent and who knows, it could discover the next Mike White.

Winger scores six tries against Marist

Darren Mongan scores his sixth try of the match during Wanderers’ 49-0 thrashing over Marist in the Car Compant division three match on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

“When your winger is scoring tries, you know the backs are playing well,” says Wanderers division three coach John Eggers. But when your winger scores six tries, the backs must have had a damn fine game and it appears they did, scoring 49 unanswered points against the competition’s second best team. Wanderers remain undefeated this season, despite having points deducted for player breaches earlier in the campaign they are now finally top of the table. Darren Mongan had not scored a try all season, but in a matter of 80 minutes he became one of the competition’s top try scorers. Nigel Win and Brett Carter also dotted down over the chalk to score. Arakis Manoli landed three conversions and one penalty. John says the result came off the back of a dominant forward pack. Steve Wallace and John Reuben were two of the game’s top per-

formers, along with Darren. The side will head to Upper Moutere this weekend when they tackle Rangers. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers secured a close fought 24-22 victory over Renwick in the Bayleys Tasman Trophy, finally adding to their early season form. Kurtis Bandy scored Wanderers’ first try of the match to give them a 7-5 lead at halftime. Riley Johnston and Damian Powick then added to the scoresheet to give the ‘Wizards’ a handy 12 point buffer. Dan Perrin had another strong match. When Sione Holani scored his first of the match, the game looked in the bag for Wanderers. However, things quickly changed in the final ten minutes as momentum swung the way of the homeside. Two late tries put them back in the match. But Amco Cassidy missed a sideline conversion that could have sealed the match at 24-24.

Wolves tame Taniwha

Ben Cooper

After a week of woeful wintertime weather saw grounds closed and trainings cancelled, gameday dawned at Wanderers Sports Club with clear skies and a south westerley wind that Wellington would be proud of. Malbas Wanderers Wolves were looking to consolidate after a disappointing loss last week, while the Wairau Taniwha again travelled over from Blenheim determined to show that they could win away from home for the first time this year. Against the run of play the Wolves found an opening on the left, Sam Hedges offloading to centre Joe Collins who raced away to score a 60 metre try the side’s first four pointer. The Wolves kicked up a gear and backed up its opening try with quick tries in succession to put pressure on the opposition. Ben Cooper scored his first of the season, burrowing over from dummy half close to the line and Sam scored the first of what would be a productive day for the

representative player. Knowing that the season was on the line and a loss could possibly spell the end of its finals aspirations, the Wolves finally awoke from its slumber and impressed in the second half. With 20 minutes to go it was anyone’s game and when the Taniwha scored through Joe Asiata to lead by six, it was make or break time for a Wolves side that hadn’t yet been beaten at Brightwater Domain. Finally enjoying some good field position and possession, they made it pay with Hayden again putting on pressure with his kicking game allowing Sam to score his hat trick. Halfback Josh McMillan scored a final try right on fulltime, snatching an offload from Joe to race away for his first of the season and the successful conversion ensured the record stayed intact with the Wolves coming away hard fought victors 39-28. The Wolves have a well earned bye next week after securing the competition points in three out of their four second round games.

Waimea women keep unbeaten streak alive Stacey Davis Waimea Women’s Rugby team has kept their winning streak alive after a tough win over Marist in the weekend. With a full squad of over 22 players the team is looking to build on its form and work together as one unit to improve each week with semi finals only three games away.

With a very even start to the game it took Waimea 20 minutes to score their first points of the match with a penalty kick from Penny Stickney. Marist soon answered with two tries back to back. Waimea kicked into gear and of course the speedy fullback Aliesha Hart used her pace to score a massive run away try. Waimea once again used the boot of Penny to take the three points from the

It took Waimea another 15 minutes before hard working flanker Kylie Albert fought her way to cross the line. Followed by a great try to halfback Tash Kara. Marist were not ready to give up and scored a further two tries in the

second half to put them behind by six, fighting all the way to the final whistle. The final score 30 to 24 to Waimea. A young but hard working Taylor Curtis showed her team that size doesn’t matter with an awesome effort at first five running great plays and tackling her heart out all game. Taylor got a very well deserved player of the day for Waimea Old Boys’ womens team.

Waimea 10A shines in new grade Waimea College 10A definitely received a pass mark when they played its first game in Grade 1. The college team gained promotion after winning Grade 2 while the opposing Wanderers Taylors A side had been relegated from the Premier grade. Waimea achieved its goal in the first round, however their mission in the second round is to develop their combinations for the South Island Tournament which is the focus for the season. They won the Year 9 tournament last year and would like to do a repeat as Year 10 students in 2012. Considering the scenario, one could easily think there should have been more than seven goals in the final score of 29–22. Wanderers had a better start – scoring five of the first seven goals, while Waimea came to terms with the more physical style and the sheer speed

of the release. Wanderers had a 9–6 lead at the first break. The second period saw numerous turnovers as both teams were guilty of unforced errors, however it was Wanderers who came out with a 6–2 advantage. Wanderers looked more relaxed and less under pressure to perform as they had in the elite grade. The side was well served by defender Yakira Hoeta– Taituha who read the play exceedingly well, to gather in five well timed intercepts. Yakira looked long for the feed, and found her shooters with accuracy. Kiriana Davis was solid at goal keep before taking over the GS bib for the final quarter to convert 5 from 6. Wanderers had an abundance of possession, however its shooters did not always find the target with just a 74 per cent goal average.
