Dam vote sends a message Simon Bloomberg

Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne believes the results of Saturday’s local government election have underlined the need for council to develop “an effective and fair” funding model for the Lee Valley Dam. Richard was re-elected as mayor

for a fourth term after receiving 6787 votes in Saturday’s local government election. However, it was not a clear-cut victory with Kit Maling receiving 5736 votes and Maxwell Clark 5101 and Richard concedes those results need to be taken on board by the council. “I think I won because people feel

the council is doing quite a good job and that I have done quite a good job too. But it doesn’t surprise me with Max because he was standing on the anti-dam ticket and I know that was the biggest issue in our election. “It’s also the biggest issue for us going forward. There is significant concern about the funding

Locals take on mud in BraveHeart Challenge Jessie Johnston Sunday’s BraveHeart Challenge wasn’t for the faint hearted thanks to around five kilometres of mud, water, steep banks and purpose built obstacles. The BraveHeart Challenge was held for the first time last year, with this year’s event taking place on farmland up Wakefield’s 88 Valley. “It just seemed like a quirky idea and it’s all about the grin factor. I like events that have a big grin factor,” says Mike.

Obstacle courses have become popular around the world, Mike taking inspiration for his from the film Braveheart. “I just like the concept of the film and just like them challenging the English, here people are challenging themselves,” says Mike. The event even had a piper who signalled the start of the adults race. While children ran a shortened version of the obstacle course, adults had a choice of one or two laps of the full course. In the elite - two lap section, Carl Smith finished in first place with a time of 45 minutes, 53 seconds, followed by Nathan Dahlberg with 47 minutes, 44 seconds. Over 70 people took part in the BraveHeart Challenge.
