Council ‘fobbed us off’ over pollution A small stream that runs alongside the popular Bill Wilkes Reserve in Richmond is being polluted and neighbouring residents and park users have been frustrated at the lack of concern from the Tasman District Council. A group of friends who walk their dogs through the reserve first noticed the pollution coming from a stormwater pipe and flowing into Jimmy Lee Creek about a month ago. It has happened a number of times since then and Idesia Grove resident Ozzie Wahrlich says he has contacted
the council to investigate the problem but nothing has happened. “I’ve called the council three times now about this and they haven’t done anything,” Ozzie says. “They won’t get off their backsides - they just keep fobbing me off.” Stoke resident Marion Brook says they are concerned not just about the impact on the environment but also for the safety of children and dogs. Marion says the reserve is a popular dog-walking area and she knows of two dogs that have become ill after drinking from the polluted stream.

She had to take it to the vet so I hope it was alright.” “The same thing happened to one of our friends’ dog a few weeks ago. We were walking along talking when we noticed that his dog was not playing and wanted
to lie in the shade - he ended up having to pick him up and carry him home and take him to the vet.” Marion says she has also phoned council about the problem but so far hasn’t had a response. “I called the TDC the first time I saw the pollution [November 10] and was told that there was no one available to come and see the mess. I called again when it was there today [December 3] and was told

Richmond shopper wins $5000 cash Last year, William Healey saw the Shop ‘n Win entry forms in Advanced Automotive’s Richmond workshop but says he “didn’t bother filling them out because I’ll never win it”. But this year he decided to give it a go, filling out one of the entry forms when he was at Advanced Automotive and it paid off, with William, last Thursday, winning the top prize of $5000 cash. William’s big win was also a bonus for Advanced Automotive’s Tony and Janine Grainger who received $1500 for submitting the winning entry. A record 78,000 entries were received for this year’s Shop ‘n Win promotion, which was run by the Waimea Weekly and Richmond Mall and gave shoppers a chance to win $7500. Richmond shopper, Sharon Riordan, had earlier won $2500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers in the first stage of the competition drawn last month. “I thought Tony was having me on when he phoned and said I’d won,” William says. “I’ve never really won anything big before and I only put in two entries, so the odds weren’t good.
