Richmond sunniest spot in New Zealand … sort of

Judene Edgar The “wider Nelson region” may be the sunshine winner, but it’s all thanks to Richmond. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese has challenged NIWA over the use of outdated recording technology at Nelson Airport since Richmond won the top spot in 2016. NIWA released their 2017 Annual Climate Summary on Monday, and noted that they had created a new regional sunshine ranking for the first time this year. “The regional sunshine ranking reflects the highest sunshine hours in local authority regions, except for Nelson which has been extended to include the wider Nelson ur-

ban area (i.e. including Richmond),” the report states. NIWA forecaster Ben Noll confirmed that, due to the proximity to Nelson, the Richmond recorder readings, located at the Richmond Racecourse, were included within the Nelson region rather than the Tasman region. Richmond recorded 2633 hours of sunshine, ahead of Marlborough on 2605 hours and Hawke’s Bay with 2504 hours. Richmond Unlimited vicechairperson Belinda de Clercq says it’s wonderful that Richmond has been recognised, once again, as the sunniest town in New Zealand. “It solidifies the region’s status as the sunshine capital, but

also Richmond’s title as the sunniest town,” she says. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is thrilled with the results but says that he is happy to share with our Nelson neighbours. “We are a very sharing community and we are happy to share our sunshine across the Nelson Tasman region,” he says. “It’s great to live in a place with such a sunny climate where we can enjoy great beaches, rivers, mountains, alpine areas and national parks.” Richard says that the sunny weather has been a real boon for tourism as well as for local events such as the Richmond Market Day.
