The new face of Nelson’s Crohns and Colitis support group, co-ordinator Bridget Crundwell, says knowledge is power when it comes to the disease and she hopes World IBD day and an awareness week to be held next week will increase the amount of information out there for people and families of those who have been newly diagnosed. More than 500 Nelsonians suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease, [IBD] a medical term that describes a group of conditions where the intestine becomes inflamed causing significant abdominal pain, frequent, urgent trips to the toilet and general sickness which makes it hard to lead a normal life. Bridget took on the role as support group coordinator for the Nelson area in August last year after a family member was diagnosed with IBD and says she knows from personal experience that there isn’t enough awareness in the public forum about what the disease is and what it means for someone who has it. “It’s really important that we get more information out there to people on this increasingly common condition. Nelson’s has a high number of people suffering from IBD so the more knowledge we can

get out into the wider community the better.” Bridget hopes the annual Chrons and Colitis awareness week which will run from May 13 to 19 will help her get the message out about IBD and says people will be able to find information displays on the disease at the Nelson Hospital throughout the week. She will also man an information stand at next Saturday’s market where Bridget local pharmacist Chris Budgen Crundwell. who has a special interest in IBD will be on hand to talk to people who want to find out more. Nelson’s Chrons and Colitis support group meets regularly to provide information and support to each other. Anyone who would like to know more is welcome to head along to the next meeting in June. Details are yet to be decided but special guest Sarah Carswell a pharmaceutical representative will speak on the value of probiotics.

Poppy Day a success for RSA The Richmond-Waimea RSA has praised the efforts of everyone connected with this year’s Poppy Day appeal and to those who gave generously. In a letter sent to the Waimea Weekly, treasurer Stuart Mirfin says a special thanks must go to the businesses who agreed for a collection box to be placed on

the counter at their premises and their encouragement of donations. The total amount raised will be known later this week. All funds collected on poppy day in the Waimea area are used solely within the area to support the welfare of returned servicemen and women and their dependents. Next year is the 100 year

anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, and over the following four years there will be many opportunities for people to contribute to this very special event, Stuart adds. “Check your family history and you may be surprised at how many of your ancestors and their families served.”
