Call it gentle encouragement or an outright threat, Richmond adventure racing trio Marjolein Edwards, Pam Morris and Jackie MacIntyre may have their husbands to thank for their race day success. The team, which has raced the South Island Spring Challenge event together for six years, won the six-hour event at Golden Bay ensuring their husbands would be their support crew for one more year. “The early years we raced and we were always there or there abouts,” Pam says. “It wasn’t until our husbands sat us down and said unless you get on the podium we are going to be support crew for another team.” The advice worked and they won the next event in Hokitika and got on the podium in Wanaka. “We enjoy the training because it takes us to parts of the (Tasman) area that we otherwise would not run or bike through, then on race day you see some great parts of New Zealand that you wouldn’t normally otherwise see.” The team will be on the start line again next year when the event moves to Geraldine. “Once we realised the event was in Geraldine we were on-

line booking our accommodation within 10 minutes.” Two other local teams did well at the event; First in the three hour school division was team DJK of Jessie Fa’avae, Kyla Rayward and Davis Sundbye. First in the six hour Junior Girls division was Team Trapped in the Map comprising Jess Alloway, Charlotte Tucker and Hannah Martin.
