Dear Parents & Whanau

Kia ora parents; student safety is at the forefront of our minds when writing this newsletter. A SBHS student was knocked from his bike this week, this highlights a number of points:  When children are coming to school please encourage them to wear their fluoro vests  Wear a helmet when riding a scooter or bike  Bikes are to be ridden on the road, not the footpath. If a child is not confident and competent enough to ride on the road then they should not be riding a bike to school  Cars cannot park on yellow lines or over driveways. This is really dangerous to our students and other road users.

Yesterday I received three complaints about parking behaviour in Alice Street: (1) The Dental Clinic staff are concerned their parks are being used by our parents (2) A neighbour was unable to leave his home as a car was parked over his driveway and the driver not in the vehicle (3) A parent was concerned over the speed of drivers along Alice Street Please for the safety of our children respect the road rules, signage and road markings to get our year to be a safety conscious one.

Meet the Teacher & Family Fun Night We are holding this annual event TONIGHT February 21st. We invite you as a whole family to come along and celebrate for the new year.

5.00p.m. onwards Bring along a picnic tea to have in the school grounds around the court area of the school (If today’s rain continues we will be in the hall), 5.30 – 5.45p.m.

Our school House Captains will have games 5.45 – 6.15p.m.

Classes are open to meet and introduce yourselves to your child’s teacher 6.30p.m.

Art Competition Last year a number of children submitted art pieces to our Chinese Sister City Suqian; most of these children have now left Waihopai, we wish to congratulate: Katie Oliver (2nd equal) Britt Elsey (2nd equal) Emily Bell (Certificate of Honour) Mandy Li (Certificate of Honour) Ryan Thompson (Certificate of Honour) Their paintings all appeared in an art exhibition in Suqian.

Board of Trustee (BOT) Meeting Our first meeting for the year will be held in the staffroom on Tuesday February 26th at 7.00p.m.

Friends of Waihopai Meeting The first meeting for our Friends of Waihopai parent group is on Monday February 25th at 7.00p.m. You are all members of this group and we would love to see you at the first meeting of the year.

“Have a Go” Football Day th

On Monday the 25 of February all girls from years 1-3 will attend a “Have a Go” football day at Turnbull Thompson Park. They will travel by bus, leaving school at 11:50am and will be back by 3pm.

Girls will need a sunhat, and drink bottle.

The Boys will remain at school for an action packed afternoon of exciting and fun activities.

Home stays urgently required

We urgently require a home stay for 1 girl - Meiji arrives 10th March and leave 4th May - 8 weeks.

Andy arrives 16th March and leaves on 6th April - 3 weeks. Each boy will need their own room and they all go to camp 25th to 27th March.

Garden Club- Worm Castings For Sale $5 per bucket The school worm farmers were busy harvesting the worm farm last week and now have buckets of worm castings available for sale. It is very cheaply priced at $5 for a 10 litre bucket. They will be available for purchase at Meet the Teacher tonight outside Room 2. Worm castings are a rich soil that the worms leave behind after digesting organic matter. They contain highly active, biological matter full of bacteria and enzymes which are essential for healthy soil.

Worm castings will boost plant growth and it helps to inhibit root disease and rot. Add a small amount to each plant or sprinkle on your soil prior to planting. Limited supply first in, first served.

School Accounts School accounts will be posted out at the end of next week.

School Activity Fees & Donations need to be paid by 31 March 2019 to get a tax refund.

School Activity Fee: The School Activity fee has been set at $85.00 School Donation: The Board of Trustees requests a donation for each full-time pupil.

This year the donation has been set at $150.00 ($130.00 if paid before the 31st March 2019).

For any third or subsequent child the amount will be 50% of the school donation ($65.00 if paid before 31/3/19). The school activity fee will be the same for each family member.

It is realised that at times it may be difficult for people to meet all payments. The school is happy to accept payments of school donation and school accounts by instalments or monthly direct credit. Just contact the office to make the necessary arrangements (03) 2184228. Payments can be made to the school office by cash, cheque, Eftpos, credit card (incurs a 2% charge) and internet banking.

Donations are used for the benefit and learning of the students attending Waihopai School within the year of payment



Piano teacher available – Registered with the Institute of Registered Music Teachers NZ to teach Piano and Theory. The classes are fun, suitable for all fitness levels and cost $7 each. We are running our final Music Awareness class for the year. This is a 6 week course for 5-6 year olds covering rhythm, beat, high/low sounds, soft/loud sounds. There will be food trucks, Irish dancers, music including traditional Irish, bouncy castle, face painting, Lego pit, and other FREE activities aimed at families.  Waikiwi RFC Junior Rugby Registrations 2019 Registrations will be held at the Waikiwi Clubrooms, Bainfield Road on Thursday 7 March from 5 – 6pm and Sunday 10 March 11 – 12 noon. All existing and new players are most welcome.

NZSTA Triennial BOT Elections

The BOT (Board of Trustee) elections will be held in May. We would encourage parents and whanau to consider standing for election. NZSTA (New Zealand School Trustees Association) will be rolling out the Korari Programme for anyone interested in finding out about standing for the school board elections and having a say in the education of their children. The following resources are be available from the office 1. Korari: a programme (workshop) that provides you with governance training to help you understand the role of school boards of trustees. We will be rolling out workshops for Korari in March/April this year.

2. Korari form: NZSTA will support anyone who advises us they are interested in becoming a trustee, by way of the workshops but also providing access to our Learning Management System where online modules re. school governance, student achievement etc. can be completed.

3. Community member guide to the role of the board of trustees: This explains a lot of commonly asked questions and information about becoming a trustee.

Fluoro Vests We still have a number of vests that were not returned at the end of 2018. If you have located any at home we would appreciate these being returned promptly.

HOCKEY SOUTHLAND Hockey Southland is excited to announce that we will be working with Jude Menezes (Blacksticks Women’s goal keeper and Auckland Senior Women's Head Coach) on a Coaching Coaches Skills project.

It is our hope to gain more consistency of coaching technique within Southland and coaches are encouraged to take part.

VENUE: Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February Invercargill Turfs (with follow up later in the season)

WHO: This is for our club and school coaches at div 4 or Year 7/8 level up to senior coaches.

The programme at the moment will be: Introduction to Work Shop 1 - Shared Vision, collaborative approach Push Pass - Ball carrying position (6-8 athletes) Skill execution Upright hitting - Box Technique (6-8 athletes) Skill execution Receiving skills - Forward Flow - Forehand and Reverse. Jude is a highly experienced player having 133 caps for India and well respected coach so get your registrations into manager@hockeysouthland.co.nz AMP SOUTH KIDS TRYATHLON When:Sunday 24th March 2019 Time: 9.00am – 12.00pm Age: 7 - 14 years Venue: Start at Splash Palace and finish at Rugby Park Stadium.

Distances/Events: All ages with no swimming level – wading the learners pool, 4km bike or 2km scooter, 1.5km run 7-10 years – 100m swim, 4km bike, 1.5km run 11-14 years – 200m swim, 8km bike, 1.5km run The pool swim is followed by a multi lap road bike and then a run following a ‘zig-zag’ course at Rugby Park Stadium. Entries out soon.

ICC SURF TO CITY Date: Sunday 10th March 2019 Time: 9.30am – 2.00pm The ICC Surf to City is a fun, participation based event, offering a 12km, 6km or 3km distances that can be run, walked, or cycled. The course makes its way from Oreti Beach, past some exciting on-course entertainment, and finishes at Queens Park. There is also an AMI Kids in the City Fun Run that you can register on the day.
