Memphis Design was a controversial aesthetic with its bright colors, clashing patterns, and unusual design methods. Today, Memphis Design is the subject of museum retrospectives and continues to act as a source of inspiration for modern set and costume designers, interior designers, fashion designers, graphic designers, and more.

Summary

The way of life of the 1980s had a big impact on interior design trends at the time, therefore bright, strong colors and hues were frequently combined with refined, soft hues and lines. Painters who specialized in pastels didn't see anything wrong with painting the entire home in a pale blue or green color. The purple and pink were also very popular.

Ettore Sottsass, an Austrianborn Italian architect and designer, founded the Memphis Design Group in his Milan living room in 1980. He brought together a group of fearless designers from all over the world who shared a passion to upend the design industry.

Influences

Their aesthetic was influenced by the traditional trends of Pop Art and Art Deco. Memphis was known for using vivid colors, geometric designs, and striking patterns.

The Memphis Design aesthetic only emerged in 1981. The 1980s saw an unique change during which time old styles were abandoned but still used as inspiration and new, unique technologies, materials, and futuristic inspirations started to emerge.

The 'Memphis Design' movement which was inspired by the Bob Dylan song, was established at a conference in Milan, Italy, which launched the design movement.
