31 Magnificent Lacquer and Inlay Cabinet, 19th Century Finely lacquered in gold hiramaki-e and hirame and decorated with a garden scene including sparrows, peonies, chrysanthemum, and baskets of blooming flora along the hinged doors which open to reveal a splendid landscape rendered in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e against a roiro ground, the interior bearing five individual pull-out drawers with a larger compartment beneath, floral bursts, dragon and phoenix medallions worked in nashiji, fundame and hirame complete the remaining sides while a pair of phoenixes decorate the arched top, 11.4” x 8.7” x 4.3” — 29 x 22 x 11 cm. Est. $10,000/15,000 Provenance: Acquired by the owner’s grandfather while visiting Japan in the 1880’s, thence by descent within the family. The box moved to Ottawa from Muenster, Germany in 1953.

Note: Lacquer ware has a long and rich history in Japanese art. The works can be grouped into one of three distinct styles, which include the classic or aristocratic, neo-classical or town studio style, and Shibayama or inlay style. The Shibayama style drew inspiration from a variety of resources including early works of Japanese art from the Edo period as well as Chinese export furniture, both of which incorporated shell, ivory, and other materials in their work. As in the present example, the Shibayama style was highly ornamental and relied primarily on floral motifs, birds, and human figures for decoration. The combination of the meticulously rendered inlaid scenes against the brilliant metallic ground became increasingly popular throughout the Meiji period and works from this time are highly coveted.

Exhibited: Gigaku is an ancient dance drama introduced from Korea to Japan during the 7th century. There are typically fifteen characters involved in the ‘silent mime’ dance accompanied with musical instruments. Gigaku was performed extensively near temples and shrines in order to promote Buddhist principles, but was no longer commonly practiced by the 10th century.

Note: Also known as Homutawake or Homudawake, Emperor Ojin was the 15th emperor of Japan and is thought to have ruled between 270 to 310 AD. 40 Boys’ Day Ningyo of Yoshitsune and Attendant, 18th Century Seated and wearing military regalia, the general with a stern expression, in a pose of concentration TOGETHER WITH a young bald headed attendant carrying a Genji white banner, tallest height 16.9” — 43 cm. Est. $800/1,200 Note: Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-1189) was general of the Minamoto clan during the 12th century, covering the late Heian and early Kamakura period. Although Yoshitsune died a young man, he is revered as one of the greatest and most popular warriors of the time and is often depicted in both traditional and popular arts. 41 Boys’ Day Ningyo of Takeda Shingen and General Yamamoto Kansuke, 19th Century Dressed in heavy armour and a helmet, Takeda Shingen seated and holding a fan while General Yamamoto Kansuke approaches on horseback with the reigns in one hand, a samurai sword the other, tallest height 11.8” — 30 cm. Est. $300/400 Note: Both Takeda Shingen and General Yamamoto Kansuke are important figures in 16th century Japanese military history. Shingen, an influential daimyo (territorial lord) led several battles and expansions during Japan’s feudal area, most notably into the Totomi, Mikawa, and Mino Provinces in 1572. Yamamoto Kansuke, formally known as Haruyuki, was one of Takeda Shingen’s most trusted Twenty-Four Generals. With a notable military career, Kansuke died in combat during the fourth Battle of Kawanakajima.

Huanghuali Furniture from the Estate of Mabel Tom Formerly of Goderich, Ontario, Mabel Tom was a Canadian nurse who lived in Beijing from 1925 until the mid-1930’s. Her residence was part of the estate of Prince Pu Lung, the uncle of Henry Pu Yi, the last emperor of China. Ms. Tom lived on the grounds for over ten years with eleven other foreigners, before moving to Connecticut and then to California where she spent the remainder of her days. To thank her for more than a decade of medical assistance and care to the local Chinese people, Prince Pu Lung gave Ms. Tom the following desk which furnished her quarters. An article detailing Mabel Tom’s time in Beijing, including photos of these furnishings, was published in the 1936 August-September issue of Canadian Home and Gardens.

179 Magnificent White Jade Lion Group, 18th Century The large jade boulder expertly carved in the round to depict a pair of recumbent lions with one resting on the other, both animals masterfully rendered with curling tufts of hair along their manes and compressed faces, the fur parting along their backs; the smaller beast with a playful and animated expression, its eyes widened and holding a long swirling ribbon in its mouth, tied around a brocade ball and continuing along the underside connecting to a secondary patterned ball, its front paw perched on the larger lion which is resting in a curled position with its bushy tail wrapped along the front of its muscular body; the stone of mostly white tone with a hint of celadon and minor white and yellow inclusions, the natural fissures of the jade incorporated into the overall design especially along the sweeping tails, curling hair, and cascading ribbons highlighting the depth and movement of the carving. Note: The pairing of two lions, one larger and the other smaller, can be understood literally as “senior lion-little lion”. However, this combination bears an additional significance and can be regarded as a wish for a successful career, specifically in the official court realm. Traditionally, the lions were associated with two highly prestigious positions in Imperial China - the Grand Preceptor, the emperor’s teacher, and the Junior Guardian, the crown prince’s mentor. Both positions related to education and teaching and played upon the homophone for lion, which was “teacher or master.” This jade carving of two lions is exceptionally rare because of the size and quality of the work. Of rounded pyramid form, the pale celadon stone is much larger than most examples, and is carved over multiple plains, creating an increased sense of depth and dimension. Expertly handled, the two figures are carefully rendered with a high level of detail throughout, from the swirling curls of the lions mane to the cascading ribbons attached to the brocade ball. Thence by descent to the current owners who immigrated to Toronto from the Netherlands in the 1950’s.

Note: These vases can likely be interpreted as wishes of good fortune and prosperity for the New Year. This theme is suggested by the presence of the “three goats welcoming a spring,” a motif which can be regarded a sign of happiness and change. Furthermore, illustrations of children, one of the most popular motifs in Chinese art, is often associated with the Chinese New Year, as it is symbolic of longevity and good fortune. The children, who are usually depicted as male, are rendered as plump and healthy figures to signify prosperity. Additionally, in most depictions, auspicious objects such as peaches, bats, or as in this example, ruyi and long ribbons accompany the children. Each of these objects bears its own symbolic significance, expressing specific wishes of good fortune. In this particular scene, the combination of the ruyi and ribbons can potentially be interpreted as a wish for longevity through successive generations.

After leaving China with his wife and four children, Mr. Hinton and his family traveled back to England before moving to New York and San Francisco, and finally settling in Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in 1920. The vases were bequeathed to his third daughter after his death in 1948.

Note: With its first appearance dating back to the Neolithic period (c. 6500-1700), the dragon has an extensive history within Chinese art. Although there are nine different identifiable types of this mythical beast, each a composite of various animals, most retain similar features including: a sinuous appearance, scaly skin, whiskers, and horns. As the highest-ranking animal within the Chinese animal hierarchy, the dragon is meant to be awe-inspiring and a symbol of power. Similarly, the phoenix, which first appeared in the visual arts around the Six Dynasties period (CE 220-589), is a highly revered animal within Chinese arts and folklore. It too has features comprised of various different animals. Together, the dragon and the phoenix form a conjugal pair representing balance between yin and yang (male and female). In this pairing, the dragon assumes the male position while the phoenix traditionally represents the female. This motif of the dragon and phoenix is commonly used as a symbol of marriage and union, as in the example of these vases. The matrimonial nature of this depiction is further enforced with the presence of the butterfly and prunus pattern along the neck, which is symbolic of permanent fidelity. A Selection of Chinese Scroll Paintings from the Collection of the Late Dr. James Mellon Menzies (lots 226-233) Dr. James Mellon Menzies (1885-1957) worked in China as a missionary and archeologist from 1910-1936. He was stationed in Anyang, where he became the foremost non-Chinese oracle bone scholar and expert on Shang Dynasty culture. From 1932-1936, he was professor of archaeology at Qilu University in Jinan. As Dr. Menzies wished, most of his vast collection of oracle bones and Bronze Age artifacts has remained in China and is currently in the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Nanjing Museum and Shandong Museum. In 1948, the United Church Mission in Tianjin returned that part of his collection that they had in storage to him in Canada. Eighty percent of this, including a large number of oracle bones, was donated to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto following his death. Since 1989, further donations from this collection have been made to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in British Columbia. His son, Arthur Menzies (1916-2010) served as a Canadian diplomat and ambassador throughout Asia-Pacific, including China, Japan, and Australia.

Chinese Scroll Paintings from the Estate of KC Tai (lots 237-257) Born in 1917 in Guandong, the late Kwok-Choi Tai took after his father, a venerated scholar from the late Qing Dynasty, and the third ranked official in Guangzhou province. Mr. Tai graduated from Sun Yatsen University during WWII and majored in Chinese literature and psychology, and taught at the College of Education for the Hong Kong government until he retired in the early 1980’s. The majority of the paintings from his collection was acquired from the 1950’s to 1980’s and features the works of the South Chinese Lingnan School. The first part of his collection was offered at Waddington’s in June 2012.

Classical and Modern Chinese Scroll Paintings from the Estate of Gar-Nung Ching (1896-1970) (lots 258-267) Born in 1896 in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, Gar-Nung Ching was the son of a philanthropist employed as a tailor in Honolulu. Mr. Ching enjoyed a privileged childhood and was well-educated, developing a talent for calligraphy and Chinese literature. In 1910 he moved to Shanghai to continue his education and after completing high school, attended Jiaotong University for two years, studying civil engineering. It was during this time that Mr. Ching began collecting Chinese works of art and meeting local dealers. During the 1920s and 30s, Mr. Ching enjoyed success as an entrepreneur, establishing both a trading company and several restaurants in Nanjing. However due to the instability caused by the war, Mr. Ching moved his family to Hong Kong in 1937, where they settled temporarily. In 1941, as a result of the continuing war, Mr. Ching once again uprooted his family and traveled throughout southwest China to avoid advancing armies. Finally, in 1946, after the war ended, the Ching family settled in Hong Kong, where Mr. Ching established Nan Wah Construction Company. Nan Wah went on to become one of the most reputable building companies in Hong Kong and was awarded many high profile projects including the building of the American consulate, Hong Kong Cable and Wireless Ltd., and Hong Kong Chinese University. After re-settling in Hong Kong, Mr. Ching resumed his passion for collecting and continued to do so until 1960. He developed an expertise in identifying genuine antiques and artwork by great painters, and was very well known within the close circle of Hong Kong art dealers. After Mr. Ching’s death in 1970, his sons brought the remainder of his collection to Canada.

Descriptions or photographs of lots are not warranties and each lot is sold “as is” in accordance with the Conditions of Sale.

Payment Payment for purchases must be by cash, INTERAC direct debit (Cdn clients in person only), certified cheque (U.S. & Overseas not applicable), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000). As Waddington's requires written authorization for all credit card purchases, credit cards must be presented in person by the cardholder and therefore cannot be accepted over the telephone. However, fax authorization arrangements can be made.

A premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot up to and including $50,000 and 15% on any amount in excess of $50,000 is paid by the buyer as part of the total purchase price.

Removal of Purchases The purchaser will be responsible for shipping and insurance expenses. The Auctioneer will, upon request, provide names of professional packers and shippers but will not be responsible or have any liability for providing this information. Purchases must be paid for within 48 hours of the date of the sale, and removed from premises within 10 days of the date of sale (see Conditions of Sale, conditions 8 to 15). Clients are advised that packing and/or handling of purchased lots by our employees or agents is undertaken solely as a courtesy for the convenience of clients. A charge of 13% HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is applicable on the hammer price and buyer's premium, except for purchases exported from Canada. In the case where purchases are shipped out of the province of Ontario, the HST or GST is charged based on the tax status of that province. Bidding To bid in person at the auction, you must register for a bidding number by showing identification acceptable to the Auctioneer upon entering the salesroom. Your number will identify you if you are the successful bidder. You will be responsible for all lots purchased on your bidding number. Banking information may be requested by Waddington’s™ or Joyner™ Waddington’s. You may submit an Absentee Bid Form if you are unable to attend the sale. Bidding by telephone, in limited circumstances, can be arranged prior to the sale. 10 Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or at a public warehouse at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away.
