Welcome… to the latest edition of THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK
So, it’s Autumn; School Half Term, the end of British Summer Time, (29th October), Halloween (31st October) and Guy Fawkes Night (5th November), Remembrance Day (11th November) all await us.
Should it be time to get a few things fixed around the home, do consider the benefits of sourcing locally. When you call the flourishing business services you find inside this magazine, you’re directly contributing to our local economy.
As publishers of this handy local magazine, we are members of The Federation of Small Business keenly supporting the ‘Keep Trade Local’ message. Our readers and advertising clients know we genuinely relate because we too, are a local business!
Another plus point when you use local tradespeople there is the increased level of accountability; you’re more likely to know who you’re dealing with, and where they are located. That’s something many find comforting!
Enjoy October & November!..

WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION
many members have sent in their comments on this year’s trip and ideas for next year’s French visit here, thanks to all. We will be discussing these, although we are still open to suggestions from members and local businesses or attractions. We have no dates as yet, it will be August, but our French friends have asked for a slightly different format, i.e. Saturday-Thursday, or Sunday-Friday, to which we have no objections. We shall also arrange future social/fund raising events.
We had a fantastic visit to our twinned villages of La Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-Loire in August, the best ever many said and certainly the biggest with 51 members taking part. The weather was good, a bit hot wandering around Monet’s Gardens in Giverny but plenty shade and we did have rain on the Friday, but we were mainly indoors in the Chateau of Mongeofroy and then the Cointreau distillery in Angers. We had the most wonderful setting for our Saturday picnic and games, the ruined Chateau de Barbe-Bleue at the nearby village of Champtocé and some medieval games to fit in with the splendid setting, How are we going to top that for our special 30th anniversary celebrations here next year? A vineyard trip was also fitted in, of course, lots of delicious food and wine, lots and lots of fun and laughter and superb hospitality, as ever. Our visit was rounded off beautifully with the magnificent Puy du Fou theme park with even bigger and better shows. Many thanks to our “new-to-us” coach company as well, ICTravel from Taverham, who looked after us wonderfully well. Our committee will have met by now, on 21st September, and
Book Club is continuing with our 15 or so members and we discussed Pat’s choice in September, “The Heatwave” by Kate O’Riordan. Pat can get copies of most of our books from Wroxham library, who are always very helpful, and can supply more information for now on 01603 782375 or pat.barkergreen@btinternet.com. For any more information please contact us, via Peter, on 01603 782733 or peter_c_milsted@talk21.com

Why Invest in the Stock Market… Even with High Cash Returns
Interest rates have been in the news a lot over the past 12 months, with the Bank of England raising rates 12 times since the start of 2022. Whilst there has been criticism that some banks are dragging their heels when it comes to passing these rate rises on to savers, some popular accounts are now paying over 5% - the highest returns for almost two decades.
In an ever-changing world full of uncertainty, it can be tempting to see cash as a safe pair of hands. £100, after all, will still be £100 in two years or ten. But what that will actually buy you – the spending power – is much less certain. The high levels of inflation we’re currently experiencing will soon erode the value of that £100.
Cash is often considered low-risk in the world of investing, but it is clearly not without risk. We explore three key reasons why it’s worth investing in the stock market, even when cash investments seem tempting.
Potential for higher returns
Despite the current allure of high cash returns, the stock market has historically outperformed cash investments over the long term. While cash investments may provide a stable and predictable return, they often fail to keep pace with inflation. On the other hand, the stock market has consistently delivered higher returns over ex-
tended periods, allowing investors to grow their wealth substantially. Diversification and Risk Management
While cash investments may seem like a safe choice, it lacks the diversification benefits offered by the stock market. By investing in a variety of stocks across different sectors, geographies, and markets, investors can spread their risk and reduce the impact of any single investment's poor performance. Diversification is a key aspect of successful investing, and the stock market provides ample opportunities to achieve it.
Long-Term Wealth Accumulation
While cash investments may provide short-term security, investing in the stock market is a proven strategy for long-term wealth accumulation. Over extended periods, the stock market has consistently delivered superior returns, outpacing inflation and enabling investors to build substantial wealth.
The stock market's ability to gener-
ate compounding returns is a significant advantage for long-term investors. By reinvesting dividends and capital gains, investors can harness the power of compounding, where their investment returns generate additional returns over time. Compounding allows investors to exponentially grow their wealth, as gains from previous investments are reinvested and continue to generate more returns. Is it better to save cash or invest in stocks?
This is not a straightforward question, particularly for shorter-term arrangements. The right answer will depend on your own personal situation, your goals, your risk profile and your capacity for loss.
While cash may offer tempting returns at the moment, investing in the stock market presents a compelling opportunity for long-term wealth accumulation and financial security. By carefully selecting wellmanaged companies, diversifying across sectors and geographies, and taking a long-term perspective, investors can harness the benefits of the stock market and build a solid foundation for their financial future.

WROXHAM AND HOVETON LIONS CLUB
On August 24th Lion President Mick Holden, together with Lions Andy Spight, Tony Risebrow and Janina Schiebler on behalf of the club, were very happy to provide brothers Eddie (pictured) and Gary Firman, the Countryside Litter Pickers, with a Street Cleaning Barrow to aid them in their efforts to keep the countryside clean. They have,
for a number of years, voluntarily carried out litter picking in and around the local villages of Horning, Ashmanhaugh, Hoveton and Neatishead on foot, but were finding it difficult to carry the bags (purchased at their own expense) of litter. Hopefully, the barrow will help them in their quest for a good number of years to come.

HORNING HUB -
CONNECTING OUR COMMUNITY
On Saturday 2nd September the Horning Hub arranged a Yard Sale Trail around the village, its first in some while. Thankfully, the day dawned fair following persistent rain the day before and 42 ‘yards’ took part, with great enthusiasm! The event was well supported by villagers but also by visitors on holiday and by those living in the surrounding areas who fancied a day out. In the past, many visitors had ventured no further than the Mississippi riverboat and the Swan Inn and appreciated exploring Horning and finding places they never knew were there! Both buyers and sellers enjoyed the community spirit and felt it would be nice to repeat it another year. It appears to have benefitted local traders too with one café reporting that business had been ‘crazy’! These are just a few of the lovely comments received on the day:-
Can I say a HUGE thank you for organising this, my parents took part and really enjoyed meeting so many lovely people! (Also their loft is a little emptier now). – JG
What a lovely day met lots of people – LD
It was lovely and very sociable, got a couple of bargains as well. –AK
Such a great and well organised event. A good opportunity to sell unwanted items and to meet people. I really hope there will be another yard sale. Perhaps this could become a regular event? – LB A regular event? well maybe! Watch this space!
The Horning Hub team with local businesses and the parish council are working together to put on the
Horning Christmas Event. This will take place on Thursday 30th November 2023 – 5pm- 8pm.
Local businesses will be open late so, if you are wondering about what to buy friends and family for Christmas, take the opportunity to browse and check out some of the special offers they will be having on the night.
There cannot be a Christmas Event without the arrival of Father Christmas and he will be arriving in a very special way!
There will be festive singing, tombola, craft stalls and other Christmas goodies on sale. The youngsters can have fun with the Elf on
the Shelf trail and also pay a visit to Father Christmas in his grotto. In addition come, see and listen to an amazing, working steam engine which will power an organ playing seasonal music.

Our committee will have met by now, on 21st September, and
many members have sent in their comments on this year’s trip and ideas for next year’s French visit here, thanks to all.

BRANCASTER STAITHE LOOKOUT
by Chris Weston
Brancaster Staithe 40 miles north-west of Norwich and 25 miles north-east of King’s Lynn is located beside the Norfolk Coast Path. It has commanding views over Brancaster Marsh, Mow Creek, and beyond, towards Scolt Head Island.
Little about it seems to be published anywhere, but Kelly’s 1922 Directory advises the presence of a Coastguard Station. So, the wooden building seen towering above the harbour today, may have been its Headquarters. Appropriately named ‘The Lookout’, the structure’s top floor resembles at first glance, a railway signal box from which those on duty would certainly have had a clear and direct view, seaward. Today however, this is Let as Holiday Accommodation.
Brancaster Staithe harbour opens on to Mow Creek, which small boats use to sail out past the salt marshes and creeks to Norton Creek and the North Sea.
Our annual Classic Car show at Wroxham Barns was our latest event. We enjoyed lovely sunshine and a very hot day, so numbers were slightly down (too many people heading for the beach!). Nevertheless, we still managed a substantial addition to our charity account, and the winner of the 50/50 raffle walked away with over £200. We have a number of events coming up – by the time you read this the Wellbeing Day organised by the Hoveton and Wroxham medical Centre will have taken place (21st September) at Hoveton Village Hall. We not only had a stand there but also sponsored the event and laid out all the tables and chairs for the other exhibitors. On the last day of the month we are organising a litter pick in Hoveton – meet at the Staithe at 9am, and we will also be repainting the fence on Granary Staithe that day too. October 24th is world polio day – every year we edge closer to eradication of this dreadful disease, but we need to keep vigilant and continue the mass immunisation programme worldwide to complete our goal. This year we are joining some of the Norwich Rotary clubs for a major collection at the forum on the nearest Saturday, the 28th.
We are also starting to plan our Santa collection event. The sleigh will be repainted and refurbished, Santa is booked and our schedule planned. We are currently expecting to be in Sprowston on 5th, 6th,7th December, Spixworth 12th and 19th, Wroxham on 13th, Horning 14th, and Badersfield on 20th, all early evening, and Tesco at Stalham during the day on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. We look forward to seeing all the happy children.
Our autumn programme of weekly meetings at Wroxham Barns on a Monday evening is already starting to look great; if you fancy finding out more about us just come along
one night – anyone is welcome to attend, but please let us know in advance if you are coming. You can also support us and the many local and international charities we donate to, through the Broadland Council Lottery Scheme – simply go on line www.communityatheartlottery.com and sign up, selecting Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club as your chosen cause. You can also support us directly by visiting our page on the www.totalgiving.co.uk web site. Meantime remember, in the true Rotary spirit of “Service above
Self” we have members ready and willing to help out in the local community wherever the need arises. If you fancy joining us for a vibrant, sociable, active, and fun club experience, please contact our president, Kelvin Dore, on 07798 786944.
THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK
WROXHAM FOOTBALL CLUB
What a start to the season! We won our next two FA Cup ties, following from the 7-0 thrashing of Yaxley we beat Bury Town away 21, then, after drawing with Concord Rangers 1-1 away, The Yachtsmen won the replay 3-0. All this against a side who play at the next level up from us. The photos show our third goal and James Blower, Chairman, presenting M.O.M. Haydn Davies with his award, a keg of Woodfordes ale. We are now in the 2nd Qualifying round for the first time in 9 years. Our next tie sees us away yet again this time to Barton Rovers (nr Luton). In our 3 league games we have lost 2-0, won 4-0 and drawn 0-0. Our defeat was to East Thurrock United who sadly have since gone into administration. This highlights just how precarious clubs are at our level, and we are no exception. Finances are constantly on a knife edge and as always, we ask you let us know if you, or anyone you know, can help partner with us. Our social media reach is astonishing for a club of our size and location. Local businesses can really benefit. Contact details will always be included in
our articles. All our home crowds have been in excess of 200 and maintaining and growing this is crucial to ensure your local clubs continues it’s success on and survival off it. We look forward to seeing you at Trafford Park soon.
