NORFOLK’S 2022 RAPID-PLAY CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

56 chess players took part in a ‘Chess Congress’ at Horstead Tithe Barn. This was one of a series of events organised by Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA). The overall winner was IM (International Master) Alan Merry. John Wickham (NCCA Chair) commented: “Local clubs offer opportunities for young and old players interested in playing chess in friendly and competitive environments. This sort of event might encourage others to start playing chess or return to it after a break”. Anyone interested in joining a club can find the locations of Norfolk Chess Clubs by visiting: www.norfolkchess.org/clubs.html

The Pirates of Penzance is one of the most popular of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, packed full of sentimental pirates, blundering policemen, absurd adventures and improbable paradoxes. Frederic, a pirate’s apprentice, falls head over heels in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major General Stanley. Frederic is due to be released from his apprenticeship on his 21st birthday but there’s a snag. Born on 29 February, Frederic discovers that he is technically still a youngster. Although very much in love, his dedication to duty is unshakeable. Can he find a way to live happily ever after with Mabel? Performances are at 7.30 pm each evening with a matinee show on 7th May at 2.30 pm. Tickets are priced £15. Students seats are available for the Friday evening performance at a reduced price of £10. A Record-Breaking Night!

With the relaxation of Covid restrictions, Broadland chess club has returned to over-the-board chess at its new home venue, the Horstead Tithe Barn, with matches and tournaments taking place every Tuesday evening. But online chess has not been completely forsaken! Tuesday 25th January was a record-breaking night for the club with seven teams in action at the same time! Broadland Kestrels drew 2 –2 with Stroud in division 1 of the national online league and six teams were playing in the Friendly Cup at the Tithe Barn. This was an opportunity for members of the junior club to play adults in a competitive but friendly environment. The final scores were: Broadland Hawkers 5.5 Broadland Grebes 0.5 Broadland Kingfishers 4.5 Broadland Buzzards 1.5 Broadland Otters 4 Broadland Hares 0 On Monday evenings, members of the junior club are playing in the UK Chess Challenge at Vera’s Coffee Shop at Wayford Bridge. The tournament is the largest in the world with between 40,000 and 50,000 entrants. In the Broadland qualifying tournament the leaders after two of the seven rounds are Gabriel McNamara and Ruthven Ridley.

THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK - at the heart of our community!

PATIENT PARTICIPATION AND FRIENDS OF COLTISHALL & SPIXWORTH SURGERIES

After another year of inactivity, with sadly very limited opportunity to boost funds for the purchase of equipment for both of our local surgeries, the PPFGroup have presented the accounts for 2021 to the Group. The Accounts were subsequently approved. Details of the Treasurers’ report for year ended 31 December 2021 can be found on the Surgery website in the section “Patient Participation and Friends Group - PPFG Accounts”. May we again offer our sincere thanks to Keith Owen for providing us with his time and expertise in the examination and production of the income and expenditure account. The Groups’ account balance at 31.12.2020 was £2621.00. Overall income in 2021 was £1000.00 which was set against expenses of £1557.74, which resulted in a reduction in the end of year balance in the account to £2063.26. Donations totalled £1000.00 - this figure represented a significant increase compared with the previous year. As always, all donations to the Friends are very gratefully received and acknowledged to the providers, and have supported valuable equipment purchases for both Coltishall and Spixworth Surgeries. For the second year running, Books and Puzzles sales have been hit badly by the covid restrictions. Unlike last year when, for the first two months of the year, we saw good sums raised until the lockdowns came along, resulting in the restrictions at the Surgeries, this year has seen nothing raised at all. We can hope that, with a potential further improvement in the covid situation, the Books and Puzzles may be able to reappear. It was recently decided by the Surgery Partners that a reintroduction of the sales at the present time wouldn’t be appropriate owing the ongoing restrictions, however, this is being kept under regular review. Expenditure for the year included the following significant items: *Compact Camera *LED Examination Wall Light *Water Cooler Maintenance for Coltishall and Spixworth *50% of Cryogenic Maintenance Despite the Friends having received a reduced income during 2021, apart from the donation of £1000.00 which we were delighted to receive, the Surgeries have still been able to purchase significant and important items for both Coltishall and Spixworth for the benefit of patients and, although once again, at a reduced level, have a good account balance to take into 2022. It is now over two years since we have had the opportunity to hold an actual meeting for the Group members, but it is hoped that this will be possible in the near future. In the context of membership, we are always looking for new members, and should you be interested, you are able to either register on the website or alternatively, contact the Practice Manager. WROXHAM BURE VALLEY ROTARY CLUB

As I write this the appalling events in Ukraine continue to evolve. Our Rotary club has always held back a limited amount of charity funding for emergency events, so we have been able to send funds already to our partners at Shelterbox to provide 3 Shelter boxes for Ukraine (these boxes contain tent, blankets, cooking equipment, water purification, children’s games and so on), and we have also sent funds to our own charity, Rotary Foundation, which is being channeled into relief efforts through local Rotary clubs in eastern Europe, in total well over £2000 of support. On Monday 7th March, our Club together with the Neatishead Village Screen Team held a charity screening of the film “Breathe” in aid of Rotary’s “End Polio Now” campaign. It portrayed the true story of the extraordinary polio victim Robin Cavendish, who was the first ever polio sufferer on an artificial lung to leave hospital and lead a near normal life at home. The evening was a great success. People said of the film “a remarkable man”, “very moving” and “thought-provoking”. The total raised was just over £800 and this will be trebled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation making over £2400 which will all go to support the Polio Eradication effort. A big thank you to all those who helped make this happen and to all those who donated and attended. Also on the same theme, we hope you have been enjoying the displays of purple crocuses we have planted around several local villages, again to raise awareness of our polio eradication campaign. Our next public appearance will be at the Horning Boat show on 30th April. We are on stand RG20 near the village hall, so come along and meet us and find out more about us. Later in early summer, we will once again be manning the entrance gates at the Strumpshaw Steam fair, this year a four-day event running over the Jubilee holiday from 2nd to 5th June – more details on this nearer the time. Also, an early date for the diaries, our Classic Car Show at Wroxham Barns will take place this year on Sunday 18th September from 10am, and will be run in conjunction with Wroxham Barns, and 1st Hoveton & Wroxham Sea Scouts. You can support us and the many local and international charities we donate to, through the Broadland Council Lottery Scheme – simply go on line ( www.communityatheartlottery.co m ) and sign up, selecting Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club as your chosen cause. You can also support us directly by visiting our page on the www.totalgiving.co.uk web site. To find out more about us and our many and varied activities you could come along to one of our meetings. Meantime, we hope everyone stays safe and remember, in the true Rotary spirit of “Service above Self” we have members ready and willing to help out in the local community wherever the need arises. If you fancy joining us for a vibrant, sociable, active, and fun club experience, please contact our president, Peter Milsted, on 01603 782733 / 07850 742337.

We welcome visitors and new members; membership is £5pp/pa. PATTERSON LODGE ACTIVITY CENTRE

Is located off the Great Hautbois Road in Coltishall. Have you seen it? Do you know anything about the Centre? We would love to hear from you! The site opened July 1982 with land given to Girlguiding Norfolk by the Patteson sisters, Philippa and Beth who lived at Hautbois House (opposite Patteson Lodge). The lodge is often used by Girlguiding members, having three large dormitories and four leaders’ bedrooms; the lodge can sleep up to 48 persons. The large commercial kitchen has all the facilities to cook for groups

with the large main hall used for the dining area and activities. It has a ‘cosy corner’ for relaxing on comfy chairs and having a chat! The outside space is extensive. This includes a large climbing frame, raised sand pit and large

wooden play boat. The rear grassed area is used for camping. It is fully equipped with a shower block and toilets, a wooden shelter and a dry shelter. The dry shelter facilities include, fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster and all the kitchen equipment needed. The campsite also has the added bonus of the woodlands often used for an evening campfire. There is also lots of outside play equipment, including a 14ft Trampoline, stepping stones, large tyres and monkey bars. The site lends itself to woodland activities, backwoods activities with open fires permitted; there is a mosaic trail with further information accessible via QR codes. Anyone is welcome to book Patteson Lodge for a residential stay, party or daytime hire for activities. Take a look at our website www.pattesonlodge.org.uk Patteson Lodge will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary on Sunday 3rd July with a fun filled open day –all welcome! Look out in June edition for more information.

On the same site Girlguiding Norfolk also has The ARC, Girlguiding Norfolk County’s Archive Resource Centre. This is unique in the country, housing archives, uniforms and memorabilia telling the story of the past 110 years of guiding in the county. Items are stored to Archive standards and on roller-racking. Visitors of all ages enjoy the opportunity to dress up in old uniforms, to take part in activities from the past, and to delve into the archives to find treasures illustrating social history. In addition, volunteers meet regularly to do work there. The ARC has set up the geocaching trail in the area, called Guiding Around Hautbois.
