WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Not much to report at the moment, I’m afraid, as our “raison d’être” rather on hold but still hopeful that we can host our French friends from La Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-Loire at the same time next year, 13-18th August 2022 and enjoy the programme of events that we organised last year. We are still hoping to have some social events before then and will certainly have a garden party, when the weather improves and when rules permit, especially as we have sparkling wine to drink, which we bought for last year’s reception. It will be lovely to see our members again, even if we can’t see our French friends. Members, look out for an email from our chairman. French Conversation is suspended for now but, I know, our members are trying to keep up their language skills in other ways, reading French news, listening to French radio, doing online courses etc and many do keep in close touch with their French friends, who have suffered, just like us, this past year. Book Club members are continuing with their meetings and July’s choice was Sue’s, “Where the Crawdads sing” by Delia Owens. At time of writing, we haven’t decided if we will Zoom or meet face-toface: it probably depends on the weather on the third Wednesday of the month. It has been lovely to keep this going throughout the last seventeen months, reading, as usual, many different genres, as our book club started in February 2006, a long time ago now. Pat can supply more information for now on 01603 782375 or pat.barkergreen@btinternet.com For any more information please contact us, via Peter, on 01603 782733 or peter_c_milsted@talk21.com

WROXHAM BURE VALLEY ROTARY CLUB

As Covid restrictions are further eased Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club already has quite a full programme of activity ahead. We are now meeting again at Wroxham Barns on a Monday evening and the large turn-out of members so far is proof of how much people missed social interaction during lock down. We are still retaining some Zoom meetings in our programme, both to keep our business meetings time efficient and also to allow us to attract speakers from outside our usual geographical area. We continue to do regular community service, working on car parking duty at the vaccination centre at Hoveton village hall when required, and we also organised a litter pick in the run up to Norfolk day on 24th July. We also had a successful bring a guest night for people to come along and find out more about us in July, followed by our annual Charter Night to celebrate the founding of the club back in 2005. This month we are running the entry gate at Marsham show on 14th and 15th August with its vintage vehicle display. We also hope to have a member’s beach barbecue day, weather permitting. Our first big event for the autumn is our first major fund raising event, a Classic Car Show at Wroxham Barns on Sunday 12th September. If you have a classic car why not bring it along, or if you just enjoy looking there will be some great vehicles to see and some great people to chat to. Exhibitors are asked to let Robin know they are coming on 07721 465647, and to arrive as soon after 10am as possible. Public entry will be from 11am. 100% of all proceeds from the day will be donated to the nominated charities Nancy Oldfield Trust and Rotary Charities supported by our club. As well as the Car show all visitors will have the usual access to all the attractions of Wroxham Barns (some chargeable, some free). Don’t forget you can also support us and the many local and international charities we donate to, through the Broadland Council Lottery Scheme – simply go on line ( www.communityatheartlottery.co m ) and sign up, selecting Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club as your chosen cause. It is a weekly draw and you chose how much to invest. 50% of proceeds go to your selected charity and there is a chance to win up to £25,000 every week. Meantime, we hope everyone stays safe and remember, in the true Rotary spirit of “Service above Self” we have members ready and willing to help out in the local community wherever the need arises. If you fancy joining us for a vibrant, sociable, active, and fun club experience, please contact our president, Peter Milsted, on 01603 782733 / 07850 742337.

It is well known that the pandemic has moved shopping increasingly online and two long established Norfolk electrical retailers have taken the step to serve local and national customers better, with the launch of a new, dual-branded ecommerce website.

Award-winning independent retailers, Snellings, based in Blofield Heath, and Gerald Giles, based in Norwich, are trusted family businesses with over 73 years of retail innovation. Although the businesses merged in 2011 under the ownership of the Snelling Group, led by managing director Paul Giles, they have had separate websites - until now. The new advanced website can be found at

www.geraldgiles.co.uk

It allows customers to enjoy the convenience of online shopping, with comprehensive product, brand information and advice at their fingertips. Both shops have seen a big increase in online sales in the last 15 months, particularly Gerald Giles, whose previous website allowed customers from across the UK to purchase a wide range of Small Kitchen applainces such as Food Mixers, Processors, Fryers, Kettles, Toasters & Vacuum Cleaners, plus a wide range of accessories. Mr Giles says, “We have been planning one website for both brands for some time and the recent increase in online traffic and sales success meant we learnt a lot about how people are shopping and what they are looking for. We have used these experiences to update the website functionality and our ranges online to meet this demand.” He adds, “In addition, merging our websites will provide customers with a wider product range from leading well-known brands, plus there is an extensive range of services for customers to choose from and highly competitive prices. It makes sense to bring this together on one website.” “We created our first Gerald Giles website in 1999 to provide information to local customers and this longstanding experience of ecommerce has subsequently benefitted Snellings and our overall bussiness. We decided to use the Gerald Giles website address as it receives the most website visitors and it is well established on Google. People who search for Snellings in the future will automatically be forwarded on to this new website.” The new website contains 1000’s of products from top electrical brands such as Sony, Miele, Samsung, Bosch, Panasonic, Neff, Bose, Siemens and more, with free delivery UK delivery on orders over £100. The business services 1000’s of customers every year and a new distribution centre in Norwich has been created to efficiently store and distribute products. Mr Giles adds, “Our focus is electrical innovation, taking technology to customers and providing excellent customer service, which builds on our successful heritage. Our business has a strong tradition of being forward-thinking and following the latest trends. Our founders, Roy Snelling and Gerald Giles, were quick to adapt to, and embrace, new technology and had a perpetual drive to improve their businesses. We are keeping this tradition alive.”

NEW: FITNESS CLASSES AT FRETTENHAM VILLAGE HALL

What does being fit mean to you? Ignore the science for a moment.....does it mean one thing? Or lots of things? Why do you (or should you) work out? The most common answer I hear is “to lose weight”. Is that really it? For me, fitness runs deeper than that.

How about to feel better about yourself? To have more energy? To be more active and promoting this health and wellbeing to your children and loved ones? To feel so confident not just about how you look, but about how much stronger you have become, both physically and mentally? To know you’re able to push yourself in a workout, to keep going when your body is telling you to stop, makes life’s little challenges so much easier. You know you are stronger than you think. You develop this positive mindset. You approach things differently. You learn how to pace yourself and push yourself simultaneously. What an awesome skill set to have. You have a healthy release from stress which doesn’t involve anything that’s detrimental to your wellbeing.

During a time when most of us are experiencing mental health challenges, evidence shows that being physically active is a great way to improve your mental wellbeing. · The NHS recommend that adults

Aim to be physically active every day. Any activity is better than none, and more is better still · Do strengthening activities that work all the major muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest,

shoulders and arms) on at least 2 days a week · Do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week · Reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity.

Being physically active is easier than you think, especially if you make activity part of your daily routine. Here are some easy wins: · Set a time for activity and stick to it - make a commitment to yourself and block out your diary! · Plan your activity with a friend, that way you won't cancel · Find ways to get extra steps in.

Walk your children to and from school, park further away from the shop, get off the bus a stop earlier or just leave the car at home and cycle or walk. · Exercise during your lunch break.

Your office may have a gym, or you may have access to a nearby swimming pool or squash courts. · Join me at Frettenham Village

Hall for some fun ,fitness circuits to kick start your fitness journey locally with likeminded people. People often say to me "I wish I could love exercising as much as you do". The truth is I don’t love it all the time! It’s hard work trying to balance work, life, kids, study and keeping fit and healthy. But for me the feeling you get immediately after a workout and from becoming a fitter and stronger version of you, makes it all worth it. It becomes higher up on your list of priorities. Especially during these tough times. Keep fit (and well!)
