Playing chess at a club…

Over the last year members of Aylsham Chess Club have been restricted to playing chess over the internet - using www.chess.com and www.lichess.org software. Recently, small groups of up to 6 players have started playing ‘social chess’ (while enjoying a drink) in the very relaxed setting of Aylsham & District Ex Service & Social Club’s bar / lounge. Normally the chess season ends in June before re-starting in September. This year, it has been decided to continue playing ‘social chess’ throughout the summer months, before returning to ‘competitive chess’ in the autumn. It is hoped this will give new and returning players the chance to play some ‘over the board’ chess before deciding whether to commit to playing competitively for Aylsham Chess Club or one of the other teams in the Norfolk County Chess Association. It is also hoped that Aylsham Library Chess Group will be able to resume on Wednesday mornings from September. John Wickham (Chair of Aylsham Chess Club and Norfolk County Chess Association) commented: “It seems that a lot of people have taken up chess during lockdown mainly playing against others in their bubble or over the internet. Hopefully, this initiative will give people the chance to try playing against other chess enthusiasts before deciding whether to join a club for the 2021-22 season.” To find out more about Norfolk Chess Clubs visit: www.norfolkchess.org/clubs.html To find out more about Aylsham Chess Club and Aylsham Library Chess Group contact Jonathan Reeve (Secretary of Aylsham Chess Club) Tel: 01263-733744 / e-mail: aylshamchessclub@gmail.com
