Sonata for Trombone and Piano (“Vox Gabrieli”)

Stjepan Šulek (1914-1986)

Stjepan Šulek was a Croatian composer and violinist who studied at the Music Academy in Zagreb with Czech violinist Vaclav Huml and composer Biago Bersa. As a composer, Šulek completed eight symphonies, two operas, ten concertos, four classical concertos for orchestra, a collection of vocal music, and multiple sonatas Šulek considered himself a composer of modern works intended to “Speak” to the audience

Vox Gabrieli is the voice of the Angel Gabriel Gabrieli was composed in 1973 at the request of the International Trombone Association and is presented in traditional Sonata form The opening is both complex and bold as the trombone speaks a haunting melodic line against a continually moving piano subtext As the piece develops, playful melodic exchanges are apparent between the trombone and the piano The piece concludes with a powerful restatement of the opening theme While a modern composition, the piece is considered neo-classical with colors from both the baroque and romantic era The sonata is equally inspiring for both the trombone and piano making Vox Gabrieli a favorite selection from the modern trombone repertoire.

Glenn Burton Lewis, trombone

Emil Wood is a first-year multi-instrumentalist music major specializing in saxophone currently attending CRC. Who aspires to become a professional composer/arranger.

Sonata no. 3, Allegro

G F Handel (1685-1759) Arranged by Sigurd Rascher (1907-2001)

Handel was a German-British Baroque composer who was well known for his operas, anthems, and concertos He was strongly influenced both by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition and by composers of the Italian Baroque Handel's music forms one of the peaks of the "high baroque" style Sigurd Rascher was an American saxophonist born in Germany He became an important figure in the development of the 20th century classical saxophone repertoire

Handel's Sonata no 3 was originally written in F Major for Violin and piano, when Rascher arranged it he rewrote it in Ab Major for Piano and Alto Sax. This way the alto still played in what would appear as F Major, though in actuality it is now Ab Major. In the allegro section of Sonata no. 3, Handel employs this bouncy feeling utilizing quick staccato ostinatos with few pauses. He also uses three main melodic ideas that evolve throughout the section.

The ballad "Beautiful Dreamer" is one of Stephen Foster's most memorable ballads. Stephan Foster is an American composer and songwriter, known for his minstrel songs and sentimental songs. Written roughly six months before his death, "Beautiful Dreamer" is a song of love that calls to attention the different beauties found in nature The song is sung to a lover who depicts a dream world of enchanting scenery of clouds, starlight, sea, mermaids, and dewdrops These scenes are all inspired by the presence of the beautiful dreamer, who the singer wishes to take to

Writing the melody and lyrics to this piece, Foster focused on metaphors that portray calm, passion, and intense longing Using the song's lilting triplet rhythm, “Beautiful Dreamer” represents Foster's final sentiments of love, beauty, and tranquility With such imagery, “Beautiful Dreamer” becomes one of the most beloved American serenades

Suite for Tuba Don Haddad (b 1935)

Don Haddad is an American born composer, horn player and music educator Haddad graduated from Ohio University with a Master's and Bachelor's in fine arts As an influential wind composer, he's written 38 solo, ensemble, and concert band pieces, one of which being the tuba and piano duet, "Suite for Tuba"

"Suite for Tuba" has become a staple among well known tuba and baritone players for its various techniques and general use of controlling the articulation of the instruments. Although no advanced techniques such as multiphonics, flutter tonguing or growling are present within the piece, it does utilize some of the extremes of the tuba's register, as well as the limits of its ability to control the dynamic contrast between its highs and lows. As you listen to the piece, you will notice contrast between the more complex rhythms and textures that the piano provides. You will latch onto the beauty of the tuba's ability to play through the contour of the melody alongside it.

Study Op. 105, No.11

Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmüller (1806-1874) Generally known as Friedrich Burgmüller was a German pianist and composer during the Romantic period. He is perhaps best known for his three collections of children's etudes (or "teaching pieces") for the piano.

This piece is composed in E major 2/4 time triad (A-B-A). The first paragraph consists of 21 sections and can be divided into two paragraphs On the syncopated bass, the treble pops a polyphonic melody, played in a phrasalized manner of "elastic tempo" (a method in which the Rubato is not rhythmically bound and can be speeded up and slowed at will) The middle section is instructed to be "lively" and continues with a vigorous phrase The third paragraph is a repetition of the first paragraph This piece is a piece used to practice the melody, and is famous as "Parting Song" It is said that once, after listening to this piece played by one of his students, Chopin sighed with infinite emotion: "Ah! My motherland!" It can be seen that the melody of the piece does indeed incorporate the author's homesickness

“Lagrima” and “Adelita"

Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909)

Francisco de Asís Tárrega y Eixea was a Spanish composer from the late romantic era He was often called “the father of the classical guitar,” as he is known for writing many popular classical pieces Growing up, he had a history of running away from home to play music, with the first time being at age 10 He used to play music in coffee houses and restaurants until many years later where he began teaching his own pupil, composing his own music, and performing all over Spain

The first song “Lagrima,” is sort of a sorrowful and romantic sounding piece that is played in an andante tempo, which is moderately slow The second song “Adelita” is a mazurka-style piece, which relates to the rhythm of the piece It is played in ¾ and is accented on the second beat This piece also has a hint of sadness to it.

Stray Cat Groove Greg Williams

Greg is my guitar instructor and he's given me a simplified version of sheet music for this song he created to teach me jazz guitar. Hes a very talented guitarist and subs in for bands who need a guitarist. Greg knows a lot about performing live, Hes taught me how to play cleaner, play more challenging things, and in general has given me a good foundation of knowledge as a beginner guitarist.

In "Stray Cat Groove" He took inspiration from an old song called "Stray cat strut" But we added swing to the song to help me in jazz This song would get me started on barre chords which are new to me before I could only play some open chords and power chords I originally learned this in tablature form, but the chord progression goes C minor to Bb to Ab to G7 then F# to Cm to G7 in the B section of the song

3 Concert Etudes S. 144: No. 3 in D-Flat Major "Un Sosprio"

Franz Liszt (1811- 1886)

Franz Liszt was born in Hungary and dedicated most of his music to the country He was and still is considered one of the greatest composers and pianists to ever live Learning from Carl Czerny who himself studied under Beethoven, Liszt’s technique was unmatched He was the piano virtuoso of his time and quite frankly of all time He is even the very reason we have the piano facing sideways today during performances Writing many pieces in his lifetime one of the most popular was this very Concert Etude "Un Sosprio" Liszt did not name this piece though, it was actually given due to its popularity

Un Sosprio meaning "A Sigh” gives the listener a whirl of emotions From a soft beginning to a journey that feels like you're flying through clouds, Liszt created this masterpiece as a way for pianists to practice their arpeggios, as they are used throughout the entire piece making Un Sosprio truly a musical challenge and masterpiece This is a light and fluttering piece of music It has a calming, transcendental feeling. The melody tinkling lightly above a flowing background of said arpeggios where chord notes are played out of sequence and often up or down an octave. Liszt dedicated this concert étude to his Uncle Eduard who was like a modern-day manager.

Partita In A Minor Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Johann Sebastian Bach was a monumental German composer during the late Baroque period in the 18th century Composing over one thousand different pieces of music ranging from solo to ensemble to orchestra Bach is a prominent figure in the music world as many musicians today flock to play his music on stage Though in his time his popularity was mainly known for his virtuosic playing of the organ, and as a music teacher It wasn’t until a century later that his work began to become more popular as Felix Mendelssohn, another German composer, started an re-interest in Bach music with his performance in the 1829 Berlin performance From then, Bach was widely considered one of the greatest composers of all time since the 1850’s

In “Partita In A Minor”, Bach wrote this piece in four movements for the solo flute. Today the third movement that will be played is named “Sarabande”. The word “Sarabande” comes from the Spanish word "zarabanda". The music is written in a meter of three, played for dancers to dance along too. Bach composed the third movement with an ingenious level of rhythmic flexibility, as this piece travels through eighth notes to sixteenth notes in a very slow tempo. Though the official composed date is unsure, historians believe that this piece was written in 1723-1724.

Bach was a German composer of the Baroque period Invention No 8 in F Major makes extensive use of the canon contrapuntal technique This is a two part polyphonic piece with two different melody lines in both hands The strict imitation between hands begins with the right hand, and is followed by the left hand with the same melody immediately after

The tonal center of the piece is constantly shifting, providing frequent color changes for the audience. When the piece finally returns to its original key of F Major, the listener may feel a sense of returning to home. The tempo is marked Vivace, which means to play in a lively and brisk manner. The goal of this piece is to work on technique and to execute playing lightly, even with all the added dynamics.

He had later on created a school for assistant bandmasters. He composed Andante and Allegro in 1935 for the annual trombone competition at the National Conservatory in Paris

Andante and Allegro starts with a very slow, nonetheless beautiful, urgent and soaring Andante section The piano constantly pulses underneath the trombone with steady beats or triplets and occasional melodic lines in the left hand The trombone melody is constantly fluctuating between high and low pitches, giving a wave effect The Allegro begins with a righteous fanfare that is very exciting The piano and trombone exchange melodic phrases a lot more in this section Later, it goes into a more legato section that calms down the mood of the music Modulations occur and the intensity of the music rises After a brief pause, the fanfare section is revisited, where more modulations lead to an epic close

Mondnacht (1840) Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer, and pianist who thrived in the Romantic Era He looked to composition rather than piano during his career due to injury and interest Schumann wanted to find a place for himself in classical music and enjoyed writing poetry and compositions for him and his wife to play One of his most beloved pieces is Dichterlieble op Or (“ A poet's love”) also composed in 1840

In “Mondnacht '' , Eichendorff describes a scene of plush pastures and bridges the idea of longing love, peaceful connection and comfort in romance. This piece embraces those Ideas with Schumman’s ascending on the action of the phrases (“through the fields”, “rustled softly” ) guiding the listener through the scenes. Schumann composed “Mondnacht '' in 1840, this piece 5 out of 12 in a song cycle accompanying the poetry of Joseph Von Eichendorff titled “Mondnacht” and dedicated to his wife, well known German pianist and composer Clara Schumann (Continued)

Erickson portrays the poetry in action with his twinkling chords in the opening and ascending chords for the flight of the piece providing a grand feeling of levitation and wonder around the climax. This piece is Championed by acclaimed Soprano Heidi Moss-Erickson.

It was as if the Sky Had silently kissed the Earth, So that she, in the glimmer of blossoms, Now had to dream of him. the breeze passed through the fields, The ears of grain waved gently, The forests rustled softly, So starry-clear was the night. And my soul spread Its wings out wide, And flew through the silent regions As if it were flying home

Joseph-Guy Marie Ropartz was a French composer, conductor, and poet who wrote a number of orchestral works, as well as sacred music, vocal music, chamber music, and more. Ropartz grew up in Guingamp, Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany, where he studied the organ under César Franck, who played a big role in influencing his compositional style. When he was eventually appointed as the director of the Nancy Conservatory, he established classes for the viola, trumpet, harp, organ, and trombone.

Ropartz’s piece, “Andante et Allegro,” is divided primarily into two sections; a slow, lyrical Andante, and a quick, majestic Allegro, which briefly shifts back to the main theme of the prior section before erupting again with greater intensity As you listen to this piece, pay particular attention to the repeating motifs present throughout, as well as the performer’s ability to maintain the energy of both sections through the usage of dynamic contrast and meticulous articulation

Wolfgang Jacobi was a German composer, teacher, writer, and organizer dedicated to the cause and promotion of music despite the hardships he faced throughout his life Due to the Nazi party blacklisting him in most musical organizations due to his Jewish background, Jacobi's career as a promising young artist came to a temporary end after over a decade

Despite this, his passion for music never seceded and he continued to produce a string of notably successful works, including this Sonata which, although a lesser known work for the saxophone, has become a standard work for students and professionals alike.

In "Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano" Jacobi primarily uses atonality as a tool not only as a challenge for the performer but also to subvert the audiences' expectations of the natural flow and leave them on edge throughout its entirety Despite the absence of such a crucial element, the piece contains textures that harken to classical, baroque, and modern devices and a constant motif that gives this piece foundation so that the listener is not left disoriented
