In the Tulsa area there are too many great athletes and to limit the Editor’s Choice team is really unfair. However, the above list is pretty impressive despite missing several players I would love to have listed on this team. A great offensive line led by the two big men from Bixby, Bryce Bray and Josh Owens is where it all starts. These five starters are next level talent and project to DI schools once their high school days are over. RJ Wakely from Victory Christian will have another incredible season at quarterback and Ian Corwin from Jenks continues to do the No.9 proud. The most overlooked running back (listed as an athlete) in the area is Caleb Bigpond from Running Back High, Glenpool. This kid can move. The defense features possibly the best four DBs to come out of the Tulsa area in decades. Yes, I said decades. Dax Hill is a phenom and the others are as well. The linebackers are salty. Just look at those names and imagine them on the field together. Unreal. Don’t forget the big man, Courtre’ Alexander at defensive end from Owasso.

RJ Wakely it sure does make for great conversation. The fans spoke, we responded. Tell us which team you like the best. Sapulpa came out strong for their players, while Glenpool and Metro Christian made a good showing placing several athletes on the team. Thank to everyone that voted! Now lets go play!

Overall this list is impossible to make, but

SNU Coach of the Month: Scott Harmon Hominy In Oklahoma there are three things you can count on; you can’t predict the weather, college football Saturday’s are like holidays and high school football rules Friday night in the fall.

For Scott Harmon, Friday nights have been something special for him coaching the Hominy Bucks for the last 10 seasons.

In 2016 Harmon guided the Bucks to their fifth state title in school history, the teams first since 2001. That victory in the Class A finals helped Harmon to make a decision that would impact his professional career as an educator.

“It was nice to go out on top. The school allowed me to stay on and see that great group of kids play out their last season together. But we had been grooming Caleb Christian to take over and the timing was right,” said Harmon. It was the Masters of Arts in Education Leadership program at Southern Nazarene University that allowed Harmon to make

such a big move professionally. The program takes 20 months, covers 12 courses and the graduate is prepared to become a Principal, Superintendent or Administrator. It’s the perfect program for coaches, teachers and counselors looking to advance their careers and Harmon made the most of the opportunity.

“The courses are practical and taught by individuals who worked in those roles as administrators and superintendents. They have real world experience and knowledge they can share which is invaluable,” said Harmon. “You build a support system just like in coaching. You get an opportunity to go through the program with other educators that you stay in contact with and network with throughout your professional career.” Harmon comes from a family of educators with both parents working in school systems and his fiancé, Kathy Bible is currently working in the

Coweta Public Schools district.

“The support the community of Hominy gives to their athletes is great. The stands are full on Friday night and they create an atmosphere the student-athletes enjoy,” said Harmon. But one thing he is looking forward to are his two sons growing up and playing for the Bucks one day soon.

“I’m still coaching with the team as an assistant even though I have a full plate as middle and high school Principal. I’m looking forward to watching my two sons, Zac and Grant, grow up and become part of this great program at Hominy.”

DRAYER SPOTLIGHT

Drayer Athlete Spotlight Raegan Edwards Broken Arrow Softball Sophomore standout Raegan Edwards is one of the top fastpitch softball players in Class 6A. A versatile player, Edwards can play first, third or pitch for head coach Randall King. But her favorite place to play is the hot corner at third base.

Last season Edwards also showed she can get the job done at the plate carrying a batting average of .295 during the season with 19 RBI’s, seven doubles, one triple and three homeruns. This season Edwards is excited to get started as the Lady Tigers return a solid group of players with excellent senior leadership. “What I love most about this team is the team chemistry, everyone gets along and works hard together,” said Edwards.

In the classroom Edwards is just as focused carrying a 4.0 grade point average with her favorite subject being math. This year Edwards is wanting to add several clubs to her high school resume. rds

Reagan Edwa

“I am not in any clubs right now, but I am looking to join some at the beginning of the school year,” said Edwards. Edwards credits her family for being a big role model in her life. “My family has taught me if I work hard I can achieve anything.”

One thing Edwards is looking forward to besides the start of the season is the Lady Tigers trip to Colorado. “I’m really looking forward to our trip to Colorado so I can beat coach King racing GoKarts again.” Korbin McLaughlin Skiatook Football

Korbin McLaughlin is a three-sport athlete at Skiatook High School and entering his junior year on the football team McLaughlin will start at running back and linebacker. McLaughlin is ready for the light to come on and the season to get underway.

“Everyone's really fired up, and itching for Friday nights. The off-season was fun and a grind but we're ready to go head to head with anyone,” said McLaughlin. The Bulldogs have a team that can compete for a district title and McLaughlin has high expectations for the 2017 season.

“We got a lot returning starters and the guys we lost are being replaced by some really good

Korbin McLaughlin talent. Our defense is fast and scrappy, our line is big and disciplined and we have a lot of offensive weapons. Obviously we don't expect anything less than the gold ball. And also being district champs,” said McLaughlin. “Playing for this team is a blessing. It's awesome knowing that I'm surrounded by guys that I know got my back through anything on and off the field. They're my family.” McLaughlin is a member of the varsity wrestling and soccer teams, but wrestling is something he has done for as long as he can remember. “I've wrestled my whole life. I love wrestling. That's where a lot of my winning mentality comes from, and my mental toughness. I play soccer but I'm not that good,” said McLaughlin.

In his free time McLaughlin goes to Crossfit, likes to shoot guns, hang out with friends and family and go to the lake.

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. VYPE celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” Senior Carley Jefferson has had her share of setbacks, but through it all she has stayed focused and is ready to make her return to the field for the Lady Rams.

Carley Jefferson

Last summer Jefferson and her family where given the news that she needs to have a craniotomy for a cyst that was on her brain stem. The procedure would mean she would not be able to play during her junior season.

“It was called a "Pineal Cyst Fenestration." I couldn't have Owasso Softball asked for a better support system than this team. I also have to have another craniotomy in December and the support from them is still unreal,” said Jefferson. The support from her teammates helped her recover and inspired her to get back on the field.

“My teammates and this team mean the absolute world to me. Every player on this team has a special place in my heart. The support we have for one another and the belief in each other's abilities is insane. These girls and this team are some of my

top priorities and I love them to death,” said Jefferson.

Being a good teammate and showing good sportsmanship is something that Jefferson keeps in perspective.

“To be a good teammate is picking someone up whenever they're down, and also when you're down. Endless support even when they make an error and encouraging everyone is what's important. Never yell or act superior,” said Jefferson. “The game is surrounded by sportsmanship. It creates a stronger bond within your team and your opponents.” Jefferson sites her mother as her biggest role model.

“My mom is by far the biggest role model in my life. She has the biggest heart out of anyone I know and is always helping others. She encourages me to do better everyday and never lets me down. I definitely wouldn't be where I am today without her and I'm very thankful to have such an amazing mom. I aspire to be like her everyday. I love her to death.”

Ever since I was a freshman I always knew that I wanted to be one and now I'm glad I can fulfill that dream of mine,” said Zimmerman. C a p t a i n ’s Q & A

Will Kuehne

Tulsa Bone & Joint Captain’s Q&A The Owasso Rams have experienced their share of change on the football team heading into the 2017 off-season. One of those changes came at quarterback as Will Kuehne transferred in from Texas. Kuehna is the son of Trip Kuehne, former Oklahoma State All-American golfer. We caught up with Will to get his thoughts on the upcoming season.

feel like we have what it takes to shock the world this season.

VYPE: What does Will like to do in his free time? Kuehne: I like to hangout with friends, and also anything that's a sport, I'm in. I'm big into golf too.

Kuehne: I am a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan. We have season tickets. VYPE: That’s a great way to end it. Good luck this season Will. And go Cowboys! Kuehne: Thank you.

"Those guys (Oline) are solid. A great team has to have a great offensive line. They keep getting better with every rep."

12

VYPE: Will, what impressed you the most about the Owasso football program when you first came arrived? Kuehne: I was really impressed with how much the team was dedicated to being the best. I was also amazed at how high energy levels were at workouts and at practice.

VYPE: You have a solid offensive line up front with Russell Baker and Jason Bell. How have those guys looked as a unit in practice? Kuehne: Those guys are solid. A great team has to have a great offensive line. They keep getting better with every rep.

VYPE: The Ram defense features its share of DI talent, but the offense looks good as well. Who should we look for this season to make a splash on offense? Kuehne: I think that we are going be solid on offense too. Look for Josh Procter to play a little bit of wide receiver as well. Also Dylan Chinn will have a breakout year. VYPE: Where is the team’s confidence level right now? Kuehne: The confidence level is very high. We

VYPE: Are you the type of player that likes a routine on gameday or do you mix it up? Kuehne: I've never really had a routine, it's just whatever gets me ready to go.

VYPE: You open the season on the road at Jenks. What are you expecting from the Trojans? Kuehne: We are expecting a really tough game from them, as they have been one of the best teams in the state for he last couple of years. We feel like we have what it takes to go in there and beat them. VYPE: How excited are you to finally get on the field and compete? Kuehne: Man, I can't wait. It's what I have been training for all summer. Can't wait for that hard work to finally pay off. VYPE: Will you play any other sports at Owasso or is your plan to focus on football? Kuehne: Mainly football, but I also plan to run track.

VYPE: Do you have a favorite team in college or a professional team you follow?

Other Players to Watch

Hilton Moseby – Defensive Tackle

Only a junior, defensive tackle Hilton Moseby is turning heads and making the offensive line earn their keep. At 6-foot-2, 250-pounds Moseby has turned up the heat on the defensive side of the ball. His determination to become one of the best DTs in the class is driving him to work hard on every snap. Getting to the first game can’t come quick enough for Moseby. “The excitement at Owasso right now is crazy. Everyone is counting down the days until our first game. Our defensive line is looking really good this year and I think we help take the pressure off the linebackers, because we are better at controlling our gap then we have been,” said Moseby. You can tell there’s a new attitude and approach to this defensive unit as coaches like Bobby Klink have come in bringing some intensity to practice.

“Our attitude on defense is way better then what I was expecting and I do think our defense will be able to stop anyone if we all play one hundred percent every snap. Coach Klinck is one of the most intense coaches I've ever played for but he brings great energy to the team and we love it. I think we have a lot of talent this year and if everyone keeps working hard like we are then we can make this year special,” said Moseby.

TULSA AREA FOOTBALL PREVIEW CLASS 6AI BROKEN ARROW TIGERS Coach: DAVID ALEXANDER Enrollment: 4,872

SCHEDULE: 8-26 – vs. Union 9-1 – vs. Southlake Carroll 9-8 – at Owasso 9-22 – at Yukon 9-29 – vs. Jenks 10-6 – at Westmoore 10-13 – vs. Edmond Santa Fe 10-19 – vs. Norman 10-26 – at Edmond Memorial 11-3 – at Sapulpa

QUICK HITS: The Tigers suffered an 18-6 setback at Santa Fe on October 14th of 2016. Broken Arrow is 23-3 against teams from the west in the past five seasons. Broken Arrow has logged ten striaght winning seasons. That’s the longest streak of consecuitve winning seasons in school history.

Head coach David Alexander started 115 games in the NFL for the Eagles and Jets in nine career seasons at center and guard. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 6-5 2015 - 11-2 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 10-3 2012 – 8-4

OFFENSE Everything starts up front for the Tigers as they look to get back to playoff form and compete for a state title. The young phenom Andrew Raym (6-4, 290, So.) by many accounts is the most technically sound underclassman in the state of Oklahoma. Last year as a freshman Raym turned the heads of schools like Oklahoma and Tulsa. A 4.0 student in the classroom and a monster on the field, Raym likely will become the most highly sought after lineman in recent memory by the time he’s a senior. Trase Jeffries (6-2, 245, Sr.) is another big man up front the Tigers are going to depend on this season. Jeffries is a salty lineman with good hands and positioning at the snap.

Ian Corwin any 11-man team.

Jenks scored 50 or more in 7 straight games in 2016, ending in a semi-final loss to Union. That streak is a school record. The 2010 Trojans hung half a hundred 10 times, the best mark for a season.

Derrick Shaw As the quarterback battle shapes out, the Tigers are excited to see the development of Devin Clayton (6-2, 235, Sr.). Clayton, a twotime VYPE Top 100 selectee, has worked hard to improve his route running and his blocking. Clayton joins Raym on the Top 100 list as well as several players on the defensive side of the ball. Wide receiver Matt Kaiser (6-2, 175, Jr.) has big-play capabilities and is not afraid to make a reception in traffic. Kaiser continues to make the difficult plays look easy. Also look for Noah Cortes (6-0, 192, Jr.) to make a major impact this season at running back. Coach David Alexander said Cortes is one of the best players on the field. DEFENSE The Tigers are excited to see what this defense can accomplish this season. Derrick Shaw (6-1, 270, Sr.) will get things started from either his tackle or end position. Shaw is a beast off the edge and a power rusher inside. Zach Marcheselli (6-2, 210, Jr.) might be the most underrated linebacker in the state. A top-level wrestler, Marcheselli has no fear and plays every down like it’s his last. Free safety Gary Mossop (6-0, 195, Sr.) is the same way. Mossop is quick to the football and punishes wouldbe receivers trying to catch 14

passes in his zone. All three made the VYPE Top 100 list and are expected to have a great season. Esaias Betts (5-9, 185, Sr.) is another linebacker the coaching staff is excited about. Betts is known for his physical play and is never shy about contact. Coming over to the football from the varsity basketball team is Camryn Dennis. The excitement around his decision to play football has many people believing he is the missing piece of the puzzle in the secondary. Anthony Diaz (5-11, 160, Sr.) may play opposite Dennis at corner.

JENKS TROJANS

Coach: ALLAN TRIMBLE

SCHEDULE: 8-25 – vs. Owasso 9-1 – at Bixby 9-7 – vs. Union 9-15 – at Springdale Har-Ber 9-22 – vs. Norman 9-29 – at Broken Arrow 10-6 – vs. Edmond Memorial 10-19 – vs. Yukon 10-27 – at Westmoore 11-3 – at Edmond Santa Fe

QUICK HITS: The Trojans are currently on a streak of 28 consecutive winning seasons. The longest by any team in Class 6A.

Jenks also is currently riding a streak of 11 consecutive double-digit winning seasons. The longest such streak of

OFFENSE As the season approaches, the Jenks Trojans have a few questions to answer at key positions on offense. One spot that is locked up is quarterback. Ian Corwin (5-11, 160, Jr.) is back after leading the Trojans to an 11win season in his first year under center. Led by Hunter Spankowski (6-2, 265, Sr.), the offensive line is on a mission to dominate up front, Spankowski, Hunter Hoyt (62, 250, Jr.) and Steven Krager (6-1, 260, Sr.) are three solid starters that may play both ways at times. Jacob Shelley (6-0, 190, Jr.) may be the benefactor of this talented offensive line. His running style is straight forward and he never shies away from contact. Tristan Quillen (5-9, 150, Jr.) gives the Trojans a nice change of pace when he comes into the game. Noah Hernandez (5-9, 190, Jr.) has played varsity since he was a freshman and will be a two-way player at running back and defensive back. Wide receiver DJ Wagoner (5-11, 165, Sr.) looks to slide into a full-time role after the offense graduated two AllDistrict receivers. Wagoner has good speed and has improved his route running.

Hunter Spankowski Kavion Lewis (6-2, 175, Sr.) figures into the receiver equation with Leondre Woods (6-0, 165, Jr.).

DEFENSE Linebacker Mitchell Kulkin (6-0, 210, Sr.), a hardhitter who flies to the ball and makes plays, has developed into one of the top linebackers in Class 6A. Treyvon Miller (6-2, 210, Sr.), like Kulkin, has improved tremendously. Miller is a tough, heady player that is nearly impossible to block on the blitz and uses his speed to run down plays from behind. Brett Nelson (6-0, 215, Sr.) adds yet another tough and aggressive player to the lineup at linebacker. Nelson will double as fullback on offense. Raegan Stephenson (5-9, 230, Sr.) is tasked with turning up the heat from the interior of the defensive line. Krager will see plenty of time there as well. The secondary may have the most questions on defense, but a few players are already locking up spots. Landis Morris (5-10, 165, Jr.) and Noah Strong (5-10, 170, Sr.) appear to be go-to players in the secondary. Both are quick and play well against the pass. Hernandez is expected to either play in the secondary or at linebacker. Trevion Sier (6-1, 300, Jr.) is a runstopper at nose guard with the ability to play offense. Jackson Lilly (6-0, 175, Jr.), who has the size and talent to play linebacker or tight end, is looking to find a home on defense. Other players to look for include Blake Isham (6-3, 210, Jr.) and Braden Phipps (5-10, 170, Jr.).

SCHEDULE: 8-25 – at Jenks 9-1 – at Bartlesville 9-8 – vs. Broken Arrow 9-22 – vs. Mustang 9-29 – at Union 10-6 – vs. Putnam City North 10-13 – at Southmoore 10-20 – at Norman North 10-27 – vs. Moore 11-3 – vs. Edmond North LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 3-7 2015 - 4-5 2014 - 10-2 2013 - 5-6 2012 - 10-3

QUICK HITS: Antjuan Overton's 5-yard touchdown run put the Rams ahead for good in a wild, 3130 season ending win over Edmond North. Bill Blankenship comes to Owasso after winning the Class 7A state championship at Fayetteville, Arkansas in his only year as head coach, leading the Purple Dogs to a state title.

Running back Bryce Cabrera's four rushing touchdowns were not enough for the Rams in a 45-36 loss at Moore on October 28th. OFFENSE Owasso made the biggest splash this offseason when they hired former University of Tulsa head coach and Oklahoma high school coaching legend Bill Blankenship to be the head man on the sidelines. The hire already has resulted in

an influx of excitement in the program and the Rams hope it will mean more wins this fall as well. As for Blankenship, he isn’t backing down from the challenge of taking on the state’s elite programs. “We are excited to test ourselves against the best,” Blankenship said. “6A-1 is a dog fight every week. I can’t wait to see us get in the fight.” With eight offensive starters back this season, the Rams should be very experienced on that side of the ball. That experience starts up front with Russell Baker (6-4, 295, Sr.) and Jason Bell (6-4, 300, Sr.) doing the dirty work in the trenches at the offensive tackle spots. In the backfield, look for Bryce Cabrera (6-1, 190, Sr.) and Antoine Overton (5-9, 170, Sr.) to be the two players getting most of the carries at running back. Quarterback Will Kuehne (6-1, 180, Jr.) will be the triggerman in the Rams’ offense this year. On the outside, look for VYPE Top 100 selection Josh Proctor (6-3, 195, Sr.) to be a go-to receiver this year. Proctor is more known for his ability on the defensive side of the ball, but he is ready to make opposing defenses pay if they don’t play him as a legitimate offensive threat as well.

DEFENSE Along with Proctor at free safety, the Rams also have a Top 100 player at strong safety in Wayne Jones (6-1, 190, Sr.) to make Owasso’s defensive backfield one of the best in the state. At linebacker, Carson Kropp (6-3, 220, Sr.) and Kelan Jones

(6-3, 210, Sr.) will be athletic, hard-hitting players that make plays all over the field. Finally, on the defensive line look for Courtre Alexander (6-4, 245, Sr.) and Darius Palmer (6-0, 215, Sr.) to be the team’s starting defensive ends this season. Along with Blankenship as the head coach, the Rams also will have a former head coach running the defense this year as former East Central head coach Bobby Klink takes over as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Klink guided the Cardinals to a state title game appearance and has long been considered one of the top defensive minds in the state. In a district that includes Union, Southmoore, Mustang and Norman North, Klink will need to be at the top of his game this season if the Rams hope to be a contender.

UNION REDSKINS

Coach: KIRK FRIDRICH

SCHEDULE: 8- 26 – at Broken Arrow 9-1 – vs. Trinity 9-8 – at Jenks 9-15 – OPEN 9-21 – at Edmond North 9-29 – vs. Owasso 10-5 – at Moore 10-13 – vs. Norman North 10-19 – vs. Southmoore 10-27 – at Putnam City North 11-3 – vs. Mustang

QUICK HITS: Shamari Brooks missed the regular season contest against Norman North due to an injury. Brooks came up big in the state championship game with 223 yards and

Wayne Jones III three touchdowns.

The adage "defense wins championships" proved true in Class 6A-Division 1. Union held foes to a Class-best 17 points per game.

Union's 24-point semifinal win over Jenks was the biggest victory in the series for the Skins since wining 5219 in the 2009 title game. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 12-2 2015 - 11-3 2014 - 11-2 2013 - 11-3 2012 – 10-3

OFFENSE In 2016, the Union Redskins rolled through the season and eventually hoisted the gold ball, beating rival Jenks 45-21 in the semis and Norman North 57-43 in the title game. This year the Redskins look to repeat with an offense built around five returning starters. C.J. Moore (6-4, 180, Sr.) is a VYPE Top 100 selection returning at receiver after catching 45 passes for 654 yards and 13 touchdowns last year. Moore has verbally committed to Oklahoma State for college but for now is focusing on helping Union earn another gold ball.

Josh Proctor Receiver Adrian Wilson (510, 170, Sr.) is also a VYPE TOP 100 selection. Wilson had 48 catches for 464 yards and four touchdowns last year and has offers from Air Force and Army. Another major threat in the passing game this year will be Lawrence Harris (6-3, 225, Sr.) at tight end. Harris has a scholarship offer from Stephen F. Austin and if he improves on his five catches for 44 yards from a year ago bigger offers are likely. In the run game, look for VYPE Top 100 selection Darius Boone to see most of the carries this year but other backs could get worked in as the Redskins try to fill the void left by last year’s star running back Shamari Brooks who now plays at Tulsa. Finally, Mario Roland (6-2, 225, Sr.) and Ricky Stromberg (6-4, 305, Jr.) will lead an offensive line dedicated to winning. DEFENSE Union’s list of playmakers continues on the defensive side. Braden Spicer (6-0, 220, Sr.), Patrick Fields (6-1, 185, Sr.) and Jordan Kelley (6-4, 300, Sr.) all were named to VYPE’s Top 100 list this summer. Spicer is back at linebacker, where he had 81 tackles in

2016. Fields, meanwhile, is a defensive back coming off a junior campaign where he recorded 65 tackles and had three interceptions. Kelley starts on the defensive line after piling up 55 tackles and five sacks as a junior. J.T. McCloud (5-11, 185, Jr.) will also see plenty of time in the secondary this year after making 35 tackles as a junior. Kicker Noah Rauschenberg (6-2, 185, Jr.) is another key this year for the Redskins. In 2016, Rauschenberg made 67-of-73 extra points and 12of-16 field goals, with a long of 53 yards.

CLASS 6AII BIXBY SPARTANS Coach: LOREN MONTGOMERY

SCHEDULE: 9-1 – vs. Jenks 9-8 – vs. Bentonville 9-14 – at Putnam City 9-22 – at Westmoore 9-29 – vs. Muskogee 10-6 – at Sapulpa 10-13 – vs. Ponca City 10-19 – at Bartlesville 10-27 – vs. Booker T. Washington 11-3 – at Sand Springs

QUICK HITS: Running back Tucker Pawley logged an amazing 50 carries for 229 yards and four touchdowns in the state championship win over Lawton.

Bixby averaged 46 points per game in 2016 and posted 70 against Westmoore on September 23rd, the most points ever allowed by a Jaguars team.

The Spartans have lost 26 in a row against Jenks but were closest to victory in 2016 since last winning in 1977. Jenks won last year's matchup 31-28. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 10-3 2015 - 9-4 2014 - 12-1 2013 - 6-4 2012 - 4-7

Coby Tilman

OFFENSE The biggest change the Spartans are facing on offense this season is at quarterback. Staton King (6-2, 185, Sr.) takes over and by all accounts looked good in spring practice and passing league play. King will benefit from having one of the best offensive lines in Class 6A. Oklahoma State commit Bryce Bray (6-6, 301, Sr.) and Tulsa commit Josh Owens (6-4, 270, Sr.) are two of the more skilled offensive linemen in the state. Add Isaiah Lakin (6-2, 250, Sr.) and you have the makings of a once-in-a-decade type of line. Lakin scored a 30 on the ACT and is being looked at by several schools at the next level. Both Bray and Owens were named to the VYPE Top 100 this season. One player that needs no introduction is running back Tucker Pawley (5-11, 190, Sr.). Pawley rushed for over 2,100 yards in 2016 and is expected to have a similar impact in 2017. Pawley was named preseason All-VYPE. Brennan Presley (5-9, 165, So.) is a speedy, fearless receiver who averaged 18 yards per reception as a freshman. His development

certainly will help King in the passing game.

DEFENSE Bixby had fielded some tough linebackers throughout the school’s history. Current middle linebacker Coby Tilman (6-0, 225, Sr.) adds his name to that list. Tilman is a three-year starter for the Spartans and last season he recorded 191 tackles. This spring he clocked a 4.61 40 time. A pair of outside linebackers in Ethan Hall (6-3, 225, Jr.) and Colyn Farley (5-10, 190, Sr.) are both returning starters, giving Bixby arguably the best linebacking corps in 6A. Hall accounted for eight sacks a year ago. Colton Tafoya (5-9, 180, Sr.) starts in the secondary, which has improved. Tafoya grabbed four interceptions last year, while fellow DB Cade Cavender (6-1, 185, Jr.) had three. Up front, look for Bryce Hendrix (5-11, 220, Sr.) to disrupt the run game of opposing offenses and create havoc in the backfield. Many people feel this Spartan team has what it takes to not only win, but to dominate. The Spartans start their run for a fourth straight title against the Jenks Trojans at home. Is this the year the

QUICK HITS: Quarterback Phillip Wheatley threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another in a 57-39 playoff clinching win over Bartlesville on November 3rd. The Hornets suffered their first loss to Muskogee since 2006, dropping a 23-6 decision at SE Williams stadium on October 7th.

Booker T. will once again participate in the Battle on the Border at Shreveport, Louisiana. This year's opponent will be West Monroe. The Rebels finished

OFFENSE With eight returning starters coming back to the Booker T. Washington offense, head coach Brad Calip expects his offense to be one that can put points on the board in a hurry. “Offensively we will be an up-tempo, spread team,” Calip said. “We have very good length and speed on the edges with our wide receivers. We also have an explosive run game that will have options in running styles from a deep group of running backs.” Three of those long, quick receivers Calip mentioned are DeWayne Cooks (6-2, 175, Sr.), D.J. Jones (6-1, 170, Jr.) and Javion Hester (6-4, 165, So.). Only Cooks put up substantial stats last year with 41 catches for 500 yards and six touchdowns, but look for all three to have a major impact in 2017. In the backfield, VYPE Top 100 selection Rylan McQuarters (5-9, 180, Sr.) will

be a major playmaker as well. Last season McQuarters, who shines on offense, defense and special teams, carried the ball 90 times for 655 yards and eight touchdowns. At quarterback, Phillip Wheatley (6-0, 175, Sr.) returns under center after completing 138 of 231 passes last season for 1,431 yards and 11 touchdowns. Look for tight end/H-back Trace Linn (6-3, 190, Sr.) to also make a big impact this year for the Hornets’ offense. DEFENSE With McQuarters starting at cornerback after making 31 tackles, forcing one fumble, recovering two others, breaking up 12 passes and intercepting another last season, the Hornets have one of the most feared defensive backs in the state. Safety Daxton Hill (6-2, 185, Jr.) gives them a second player who fits that bill as well. Hill was also a Top 100 selection after making 57 tackles, forcing a fumble, breaking up seven passes and picking off two more in 2016. At linebacker, Jason Harris (5-11, 220, Sr.) has the mix of speed and strength that every defensive coach covets and every opposing team will spend hours trying to scheme against. In 2016, Harris recorded 95 tackles, six sacks

and six tackles for loss. Linn will also get plenty of time at a linebacker spot this year after a 2016 campaign of 85 tackles, 6 ½ sacks, three tackles for loss and one defensive touchdown. In the trenches, nose guard Jonathan Brown (5-9, 260, Sr.) will lead the way for the Hornets after racking up 72 tackles, six sacks and four tackles for loss last year. Defensive end Kiero Petross (6-0, 185, Jr.) is another key playmaker on the front after chipping in 63 tackles, six sacks and six tackles for loss last year. “Our goal is to stay healthy and play in November and December,” Calip said. “We have a lot of talent coming back and if we stay healthy and have some luck we will have a great chance to play for a gold ball.”

QUICK HITS: For the second time in three years, the Sandites went on the road to Midwest City and eliminated the Bombers in the first round of the playoffs. Running back Payton Scott mesmerized the Bombers with 159 yards and two touchdowns. Pulaski Academy returns a game to west Tulsa for the 2017 season opener. The Bruins dominated Arkansas' Class 5A on the way to a state championship in 2016. Pulaski won last year's game 56-21 in Little Rock. Sand Springs is currently on a run of five consecutive winning seasons. It's the longest streak in school history. The previous best was three in a row from 1995-1997.

LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 7-5 2015 - 7-5 2014 - 8-4 2013 - 6-4 2012 – 8-3

OFFENSE Five offensive starters return to the always blue-collar Sand Springs offense this season, looking for an improvement on last year’s 7-5 campaign. Running back Payton Scott (5-5, 185, Sr.) will be the unquestioned leader of that group after rushing for 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. Scott will have a very strong offensive line to run behind this season as well, so expect his numbers to stay very high. Senior Miron Krotzer is the man everyone will turn to in the trenches, and he will have talented juniors Cameron Lierly and Caleb Mallory flanking him this season. At tight end, look for senior Dash Fleischman to be a major threat in the passing game as well as throwing

TULSA AUGUST 2017

some key blocks up front to spring Scott for big runs. Junior quarterback Caden Pennington projects as the starter this year. “We will ride the running game behind an experienced offensive line and a threeyear starter in Payton Scott,” head coach Dustin Kinard said. “We will need to develop a passing game throughout the season, though, with a newcomer at quarterback and several new receivers.”

DEFENSE Six starters return to the Sandites’ defense this year with most of those working in the front seven. On the line, seniors Gage Fain and Kris Edwards will start at defensive end. Meanwhile, senior Malon Moyer will get the start at nose guard. At linebacker, Fleischman will lead a group of talented, speedy players that will be counted on to make plays sideline to sideline. Juniors Hayden Cramer and Luke Bratcher will join Fleischman

in that contingent. Overall, Kinard said the Sandites will need to do a couple of things very well if they hope to be successful this season. “We have a lot of new faces in the back end on defense and the skill positions offensively,” Kinard said. “We will have to do a great job of running the football with Payton Scott and also do a great job of stopping the run on defense.”

SAPULPA CHIEFTAINS

Coach: ROBERT BORGSTADT SCHEDULE: 8-25 – at Duncan 9-1 – vs. Choctaw 9-8 - OPEN 9-15 – at Bishop Kelley 9-22 – vs. Sand Springs 9-29 – at Booker T. Washington 10-6 – vs. Bixby 10-13 – at Bartlesville 10-19 – vs. Ponca City 10-27 – at Muskogee 11- 2 – vs. Broken Arrow

QUICK HITS: Sapulpa defeated Ponca City 31-27 on October 20th, ending a two-game winning streak by the Wildcats in the series.

The Chieftains lost their third straight to Muskogee in 2016. The teams have met 11 consecutive seasons with the Roughers holding an 8-3 edge.

Wide receiver Gerquan Sanders shreded the Choctaw defense in a 52-42 loss to the Yellowjackets. Sanders caught 11 passes for 153 yards and four touchdowns in the game. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 1-9 2015 - 2-7 2014 - 1-9 2013 - 6-6 2012 – 6-5

OFFENSE Seven starters return to Sapulpa’s offense this season, which should help the Chieftains significantly as

they look to improve on last year’s 1-9 record. Another thing that should aid that process is a complete offseason with head coach Robert Borgstadt, who came in last summer to lead the program. “With a full offseason under our belts we are bigger, faster and stronger and it is showing up on the field,” Borgstadt said. Gerquan Sanders (6-2, 170, Sr.) will be the leader of that bigger, stronger and faster group on offense this year. In 2016, Sanders only played in seven games but still caught 41 passes for 470 yards and eight touchdowns. Cameron Hancock (6-2, 195, Sr.) will also see some time at receiver this year along with playing some tight end. Hancock only played in six games last year and finished with 17 catches for 320 yards and a touchdown. The Chieftains will also have an old face in a new place as Tyler Wick (6-4, 245, Sr.) slides over to tight end this year after playing offensive tackle in 2016. Up front, Jordan Lay (6-2, 285, Sr.) will be playing guard this season and anchoring the offensive line. DEFENSE Wick will also slide over to the defensive side of the ball to be a leader at d-end this year. Wick will need to take on a big load this year as one of the few leaders in the front seven since Sapulpa returns just four starters on defense. The area where the Chieftains will likely be the strongest on defense is in the secondary. Marcus Esparza (5-11, 195, So.) played in six games as a freshman and had 27 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble from his safety spot. Stanley White (5-10, 180, Sr.) also will be a major playmaker in the defensive backfield at corner. In 2016, White recorded 47 tackles and two interceptions and hopes to see those numbers rise this year.

CLASS 5A BISHOP KELLEY COMETS Coach: J.J. TAPPANA

SCHEDULE: 9-1 – at Edison 9-8 – vs. Bishop McGuinness 9-15 – vs. Sapulpa 9-22 – vs. Collinsville 9-29 – at Pryor 10-6 – vs. Claremore 10-13 – at Skiatook 10-20 – at Memorial 10-27 – at Hale 11- 3 – vs. Tahlequah QUICK HITS: Tailback Reese Jones rushed 19 times for 80 yards with three touchdowns in a 28-10 win at Collinsville on September 23rd. J.J. Tappana enters his 12th season as head coach at Bishop Kelley. The Comets have had only one losing season during his tenure. The Comets will meet Memorial for the 12th straight season. Bishop Kelley has won ten of the previous eleven meetings, including two straight.

offensive line, where VYPE Top 100 selection Davis Govrick (6-2, 255, Sr.) will start at center. Govrick has been a two-year starter at tackle and already has a Division I offer from San Diego University and more could be headed his way this season if he can help lead Kelley on a deep playoff run and prove his versatility in the process. At quarterback, Jake McMurray (6-0, 175, Sr.) is a seasoned leader and phenomenal athlete who threw for 1,158 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. McMurray could easily see those numbers go up this year if he improves on his 47 percent completion rate from 2016. Look for wide receiver O.C. Walker (5-9, 165, Sr.) to be McMurray’s top target this

DEFENSE The Comets return six starters on defense, which only adds to the talk of Bishop Kelley being a favorite in District 5A-4. Kelley will have players they can trust at every level, including the group of linebackers patrolling the middle of the field. Oklahoma Driving School

LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 9-3 2015 - 8-3 2014 - 5-5 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 9-3

OFFENSE Seven offensive starters come back for Bishop Kelley this season as the Comets look to improve on last season’s 9-3 record and Class 5A quarterfinal appearance. The experience starts on the

year after he pulled in 20 receptions for 195 yards as a junior. Bryce Alonso (6-4, 225, Sr.) also will be a threat in the passing game this year as he gets some time at receiver in addition to his usual snaps at tight end. One thing that Walker and Alonso both will be required to do this year is block in the run game, which both players pride themselves in. Leading that ground attack for the Comets is David Bolton (510, 180, Sr.), who had 928 yards and 11 touchdowns on 128 carries last year. Reese Jones (5-10, 200, Sr.) gives teams another back to think about, though, and not just as a change-of-pace. In 2016, Jones carried the ball 114 times and had 657 yards and seven touchdowns.

in 2016. At the other outside linebacker spot, Jack Barkley (5-10, 200, Jr.) adds the type of speed and willingness to hit that true fans desire. Last year, Barkley had 63 tackles and six sacks, numbers he is sure to improve on now that he is an upperclassman. Jones also will play linebacker this year on the inside after making 37 tackles a year ago. On the defensive line, Govrik will play at nose guard and anchor the trenches. As a junior, Govrik had 59 tackles and three sacks and promises to be a handful for any opposing lineman this season. In the secondary, Jack Griffin (6-2, 185, Sr.) and Caleb Alvez (5-8, 155, Sr.) will be the leaders of a very experienced unit. In 2016, Griffin had 48 tackles and eight interceptions while Alvez had 15 tackles and 17 pass breakups.

QUICK HITS: Collinsville has won eight games or more in five consecutive seasons. It's the longest such streak in school history.

The Cardinals three shutouts in 2016 were tied for the most in Class 5A with Ardmore. Wide receiver Hayden West caught four passes for 69 yards in a 28-14 win over Claremore on October 28th. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 9-3 2015 - 8-5 2014 - 8-3 2013 - 10-3 2012 - 8-3

OFFENSE After a 9-3 season in 2016, the Collinsville Cardinals are once again expecting

big things in 2017 and hope to contend for a district championship and eventual state championship. On offense, five starters return for the Cardinals and none are bigger, literally and figuratively than tight end Grayson Boomer (6-5, 235, Jr.). Last season Boomer, a VYPE Top 100 selection, caught 15 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown. Other major targets in the passing game this year will be wide receivers Hayden West (5-10, 160, Sr.) and Walker Roberts (5-11, 170, Jr.). In 2016 West caught 40 passes for 529 yards and eight touchdowns. Meanwhile, Roberts had 24 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns. In the backfield, look for Malcom Tillman (6-1, 180, Jr.) and Breyden Burd (5-9, 185, So.) to share the load in the rushing attack this season as the Cardinals look to assert their will with a strong ground game. Opening up holes for the two talented backs will be an equally talented offensive line, led by Karson Cole (6-0, 210, Jr.) at center. Despite graduating a Division I quarterback in Seth Boomer, who is now at the University of Tulsa, Collinsville head coach Kevin Jones said he still expects his offense to be able to move the ball both through the air and on the ground. Quarterback Carson Stout (6-0, 165, Sr.) will help that attack stay balanced. “We will be young and talented and offensively have a balanced attack,” Jones said.

Tillman added 35 stops and one interception. Other key players on the Cardinals defensive line will be defensive ends Spencer Oslin (6-1, 245, Sr.) and Nate Sinni (6-2, 215, Sr.). A year ago, Oslin had 36 tackles and three sacks while Sinni had 22 tackles, two sacks and one fumble recovery. On the back end of the defense, Stout also will see time after making 26 tackles and three interceptions along with Tre Eberle (5-10, 185, Jr.) who recorded 26 tackles, two sacks and one fumble recovery.

DEFENSE All of the players mentioned as key players on offense also will play on defense. Boomer and Cole both will play defensive end this season with Burd playing linebacker. West and Tillman both will play in the secondary. In 2016, West made 69 tackles and two interceptions and 20

Thomas Ivy OFFENSE With only four starters returning to Coweta’s spread attack, the Tigers will need to have several players step into new roles this season if they hope to get back into the playoffs. Still, the Tigers’ talent level this year will be substantial. At tight end, Garret Taylor (6-6, 260, Sr.) will be starting at that position for the first time in his career but is already gaining attention from multiple FBS schools, according to head coach Tim Holt Jr. On the offensive line, right guard Dakota McCaleb (5-10, 260, Sr.) will bring a great deal of experience and leadership as a three-year starter. Running behind McCaleb and the rest of the Coweta offensive line will be running backs Spencer Harrington (5-9, 165, Jr.) and Thomas Ivy (5-10, 170, So.) although both players may also play some receiver this year as well. In 2016, Harrington had 44 carries for 314 yards and two touchdowns and also caught 22 passes for 318 yards and five touchdowns. Ty Decker (6-0, 180, Sr.) and Seth McManus (6-0, 185, Sr.) also will play a big role in the Coweta offense this year with both getting reps at wide receiver. Last season Decker and McManus combined for 18 catches and over 269 yards receiving. “We will be young offensively this year and will look to speed up the tempo of our offense,” Holt said. “We will be pretty big up front with four new starters with a potential to be very good there. If Garret Taylor works out at tight end it could be a great thing for him and us.” DEFENSE The Tigers will operate out of a 4-2-5 base formation. At safety, Micah Thomas (510, 205, Sr.) will be a player

expected to not only cover receivers down the field but also come up to stop the run. In 2016 Thomas recorded 75 tackles and also had one interception. Joining Thomas in the defensive backfield will be cornerback Blake McDonald (6-0, 170, Jr.), who had 18 tackles and one interception last season. At linebacker, Nick Frink (5-10, 210, Sr.) will be a mainstay on the Tigers’ defense, coming off a 2016 campaign where he recorded 66 tackles and one quarterback sack. On the defensive line, Taylor and McCaleb will both start at defensive tackle. Both players made their presence known last season with Taylor finishing the year with 48 tackles and three sacks and McCaleb totaling 35 tackles and three sacks.

QUICK HITS: The 26-24 overtime win versus Glenpool on October 20th ended a 15-game skid for the Cardinals. Aaron Stokes hit Skiatook with two big plays in East Central's 49-27 loss to the Bulldogs. Stokes returned a kickoff 79 yards for a score and hauled in a 62 yard touchdown pass.

Quarterback Eric Crumb threw three touchdown passes and the decisive twopoint conversion pass in the Cardinals 26-24 overtime win over Glenpool. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 1-9 2015 - 0-8 2014 - 3-6 2013 - 4-7 2012 - 13-1

2016. Led by coach Kevin Gordon, who is coming into his second season at the school and 22nd as a coach overall, the Cardinals will have a mixture of young and experienced talent leading the offense in 2017. Aaron Stokes (5-8, 170, Jr.) will play a large role for both the offense and defense this season, as he will spend time at both wide receiver and cornerback. Stokes showed superb pass catching ability as a sophomore with 487 receiving yards. Another junior, Isaiah Tyson (6-1, 200, Jr.), comes into 2017 with experience at multiple positions, but he is going to be expected to make plays at quarterback this time around. As a receiver in 2016, Tyson went for 213 yards in the spread style offense. Noah Downing (5-10, 220, Sr.) will anchor the offensive line in his senior season, as he hopes to buy time for Tyson to make plays. Gordon said his team will have a more balanced attack in 2017, with the focus on getting the ball to their athletes in space so they can make plays.

DEFENSE Although Isaiah Tyson is a big part of the East Central offense, he will be equally as important for the defensive unit. A linebacker, Tyson comes into 2017 with the most tackles of any returning player with 70 last season. Like Tyson, Aaron Stokes will play on both sides of the ball in the cornerback position. As someone who enjoys flying to the ball and making plays, Stokes picked up 60 tackles in the previous season. Keith Smith (5-8, 165, Jr.) will play the other cornerback position for the Cardinals, as he comes into his junior campaign hoping to establish his place in the lineup. A youthful team in every department, the East Central defense only has four returning starters from 2016. Gordon said his defense will look to be aggressive and will swarm to the ball with speed and intensity. He also said he’s excited for this season, as he looks forward to getting his team back on top.

SCHEDULE: 9-1 – vs. Bishop Kelley 9-8 – vs. Memorial 9-15 – at Claremore 9-21 – vs. Glenpool 9-29 – at East Central 10-6 – vs. McAlester 10-13 – at Coweta 10-19 – at Shawnee 10-27 – at Noble 11-3 – vs. Durant

some passes this season but he could get some time at quarterback, too, according to Daniels. If Carleton does split out wide, then look for Brant Hager (6-1, 175, So.) to slide in behind center and be the trigger man in the Eagles’ offense.

QUICK HITS: The Eagles had a hard time generating offense in 2016, Edison failed to score more than one touchdown in 8 out of 10 contests. Running back Jerome Townsell gained 86 yards on 11 carries in the Eagles 26-7 win over East Central.

Thomas Edison extened its winning streak to three over East Central. The Cardinals had previosly dominated that series winning 10 straight before 2014. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 1-9 2015 - 5-5 2014 - 6-5 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 1-9

OFFENSE After taking some lumps in year one at Edison, head coach Tony Daniels has an experienced group of offensive players returning this year. On the offensive line, Chester Baah (6-3, 275, Jr.) will do the type of dirty work that won’t show up in a box score but if the Eagles hope to succeed Baah will need to play a huge role. Wyatt Ellis (6-1, 177, So.) may also do some blocking at the tight end spot but will also split out at wide receiver at times. Also getting some time at wide receiver this year will be Tristan Wright (5-9, 160, Jr.) and Anthony Jimmerson (6-0, 175, Jr.). Cole Carleton (6-2, 180, Jr.) also may catch 22

DEFENSE Edison will have a very experienced defensive unit to hang its hat on this year. Bryce Capron (6-0, 230, Sr.) will lead a talented group of linebackers that will be the core of the Edison defense. In 2016, Capron made 91 tackles, had two sacks and picked off a pass. Joining Capron in the middle of the field will be Jamal Holmes (5-10, 190, Jr.), Jerome Townsell (5-11, 195, Sr.) and Joey Bingham (5-10, 198, So.). Last season Holmes recorded 78 tackles and six sacks while Townsell piled up an impressive 170 tackles and nine sacks. Bingham chipped in 66 tackles, two sacks and picked off a pass. In the secondary, look for Max Burn (5-9, 165, Sr.) and Kelton Remlinger (6-0, 160, Sr.) to be the Eagles’ ringleaders. Last year Burn and Remlinger combined for 104 tackles, three sacks and one interception. Overall, Daniels said he is excited to get the season underway and see the strides his team has made. “We are looking forward to our second year and what the season holds for us,” Daniels said. “We had a great offseason and are working hard toward a successful season.”

Caleb Bigpond 9-29 – vs. Durant 10-6 – at Noble 10-13 – vs. Shawnee 10-19 – at East Central 10-27 – at McAlester 11-3 – vs. Coweta

QUICK HITS: Steven Edwards is entering his 22nd year as head coach at Glenpool. That's the longest current tenure of any Class 5A coach.

Running back Caleb Bigpond erupted for three touchdowns in a 26-24 loss to East Central. Glenpool is coming off backto-back losing seasons for the first time since 1995-96. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 1-9 2015 - 4-6 2014 - 6-5 2013 - 5-5 2012 - 3-7

OFFENSE Historically, the Warriors have produced great running backs. The 2017 campaign could add another name to that storied list. Caleb Bigpond (6-0, 205, Sr.) rushed for over 1,200 yards last year and is one of the top running backs in the class. The Warriors will use him as a running back or in the wildcat giving them a run/ pass option. Bigpond will benefit from having a sturdy offensive line. Jordon Espinoza (5-11, 285, Sr.) and Dustin Chadwick (5-11, 190, Sr.) shore up the line alongside tight end Mason Bennett (6-2, 250, Sr.). Bennett is an excellent blocker and an athletic player that can reach the second level on his blocks. Brenden Ballard (5-11, 180, Sr.) and Tony Phillips (5-9, 170, Sr.) are a pair of receivers with big-play capabilities as they look to stretch the field and make the defense pay for coverage mistakes.

Ronnie Wells DEFENSE Anthony Billie (5-10, 180, Sr.) starts at outside linebacker with Braxton Kerns (6-1, 200, Jr.) at inside linebacker. They are a formidable duo, with Brett Hoffman (5-10, 190, Sr.) at nose guard. Garrett Camp (6-1, 195, Jr.) and Zack Pollard (5-10, 190, Sr.) are a pair of defensive ends the Warriors will need to set the edge and funnel everything back inside to the linebackers. Kevin Long (6-0, 160, Jr.) is a quick corner that covers well and has the speed to hang with any receiver in the district. The Warriors and head coach Steve Edwards, who enters his 21st season at Glenpool, are “looking for growth” after their first season in Class 5A. Expect this proud program to begin turning things around and become a tough opponent for any team on the schedule.

MEMORIAL CHARGERS

Coach: RYAN REED

SCHEDULE: 8-25 - OPEN 8-31 - at Central 9-8 - vs. Edison 9-15 - vs. NOAH at BA 9-22 - vs. Pryor 9-29 - at Claremore 10-5 - vs. Skiatook 10-13 - at Collinsville 10-19 - vs. Bishop Kelley 10-27 - at Tahlequah 11-2 - vs. Nathan Hale

QUICK HITS: Memorial's last post-season victory was a 7-6 conquest of Enid in the first round of the 1988 Class 6A playoffs. Quarterback Ronnie Wells III threw for two touchdowns and rushed for 72 yards in a season opening 34-27 win over the Central Braves. Memorial has won six games in a row against Nathan Hale by a combined average margin of 48-15.

LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 4-5 2015 - 7-4 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 6-4 2012 – 6-4

OFFENSE With the tradition of Memorial football behind them, the Chargers head into 2017 with high expectations and the experience to meet those expectations. The Chargers’ offense will have seven returning starters from last season, which will help as they try to improve last year’s 4-5 record. Ronnie Wells (5-10, 160, Sr.) will be the starting quarterback for Memorial in his senior season. Wells will look to spread the ball around and hopefully get help from a strong running game. Jamoni Jones (6-1, 205, Jr.) will be the workhorse for this squad as they look to control the tempo and clock with the flexbone offense. On the offensive line, Caleb Davis (6-3, 270, Jr.), Dontay Woods (6-1, 295, Sr.) and Conner Winfield (6-0, 240, Jr.) will be the big men up front for this side. These three have great experience coming into 2017, which will be crucial for this offensive scheme. After an up-and-down 2016, the Memorial offense has a lot more valuable experience that should keep any defense guessing. DEFENSE This unit will need to be sharp and aggressive this fall, as there will be several new faces playing big roles. With only four returning starters, this 3-4 scheme still will look to fly to the ball and put a lot of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Raymond Thomas (6-0, 180, Sr.) is the senior leader in the Chargers’ secondary and he will need to be consistent and smart as the last line of defense. Dontay Woods will be the anchor of this defensive line that hopes to limit the opponents’ running game. Dontay Turner (5-10, 190, Jr.) and Zack Black (5-11, 175, Sr.) are two key players in this Memorial linebacker corps. These two guys will have huge responsibilities in the middle of this defense, as they will be looked to for strong tackling and great

awareness. Ryan Reed, who is heading into his fifth season coaching his alma mater, knows that this season could be special for his team. With a solid mixture of talent, youth and experience, the Chargers could easily make some noise come playoff time.

HALE RANGERS

Coach: BRUCE MUNDEN

SCHEDULE: 8-25 - at Daniel Webster 9-1 - OPEN 9-8 - vs. Poteau 9-15 - at Northwest Classen 9-22 - vs. Claremore 9-29 - at Skiatook 10-6 - vs. Collinsville 10-13 - at Pryor 10-19 - at Tahlequah 10-27 - vs. Bishop Kelley 11-2 - at Memorial

QUICK HITS: Nathan Hale allowed 47.4 points per game in 2016, the highest average in Class 5A. The Rangers last district championship game in 1997 when they finished the season with a record of 8-3.

Hale scored 47 points in a losing effort against Northwest Classen on September 16th. The last time the Rangers scored more points was in a 58-20 win over Will Rogers to close the 2010 season. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 0-10 2015 - 1-9 2014 - 0-10 2013 - 0-10, 2012 - 2-8

OFFENSE In his first season as head coach of the Rangers, Bruce Munden is looking to start a new era of winning and wants to change his program’s approach to the game through fundamentals and discipline. “We will be a disciplined team that makes you work every down, both offensively and defensively,” Munden said. The offense will feature a fast-paced attack in an attempt to wear down the opponent. Emile Douglas (6-0, 170, Sr.) will guide the offense down the field after throwing for 774 yards and rushing for 471 yards and 10 touchdowns last year.

Douglas will use running back Isaiah Chatman (5-6, 151, Sr.) to soften the defense so he can hit Jaquavon Folks (5-10, 150, Sr.) and Malik Adams (5-7, 143, Jr.) in the slot. There are a couple of holes on the offensive line left vacant by graduation, but Terrance McClellen (5-8, 265, Sr.) is not to be overlooked. McClellen plays with a mean streak offensive line coaches want.

DEFENSE “Defensively we will play blue collar football,” Munden said. Sophomore Jordan Guest (5-6, 140) will start at safety, giving the Rangers a player that loves to hit and is athletic enough to cover the pass. Cardell Simmons (5-9, 220, So.) is a workhorse at linebacker. His relentless pursuit sets the tone on defense with fellow outside linebacker Emile Douglas. DeAngelo Washington (6-0, 170, So.) has the quickness and ability to find the football that every coach loves at linebacker. His contributions this season could be the difference the Rangers need. Desmond Jones (5-11, 200, Jr.) has made gains in the weight room and is the defensive end the team needs to set the edge. Brandon Webb, Danny Day and Mike Gray join the staff as Munden looks to turn things around and bring the pride back to Ranger football.

The Bulldogs have strung together three consecutive shutouts of Nathan Hale, winning by a combined margin of 139-0. . LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 5-5 2015 - 12-1 2014 - 12-2 2013 - 4-7 2012 – 0-10

OFFENSE Head coach Vance Miller is excited for the upcoming season and the challenges of District 5A-4. Offensive coordinator Bobby Cooper has one weapon every school wishes they had in T.K. Wilkerson (6-2, 210, Sr.). Wilkerson has been on the radar of several Division I schools, including Tulsa, SMU, North Texas and Oklahoma State. The three-year starter will go both ways for the Bulldogs, playing running back and outside linebacker on defense. Wilkerson will benefit from having two returning offensive linemen with experience in Dylon Carnegey (6-1, 290, Sr.) and Justin DeMauro (6-3, 255, Sr.). Both players have started for two seasons and both have offers from NEO. Quarterback Cody Evans (6-1, 160, Jr.) has started for two seasons is a heady player that understands the game. Finding him a go-to receiver in the passing game has been one of the top priorities this spring. Korbin McLaughlin (6-0, 220, Jr.), like Wilkerson, will play in the backfield and at linebacker. McLaughlin is more of a fullback that can carry the ball in short yardage situations or lead block on power plays. DEFENSE Brian Miller is the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator and a coach that loves guys that can swarm to the ball and

Ben Coonce play sound technique. His linebackers are all of the above. Chandler Perigo (5-11, 212, Sr.) had over 100 tackles last season from his linebacker spot and expects similar results this season. Perigo is joined by Wilkerson and McLaughlin, making up one of the top linebacker corps in the class. Carnegey will start on the line, giving the Bulldogs a real threat to move the line of scrimmage at the snap. The secondary is equipped for big plays as Korey Miller (5-11, 165, Sr.) will lock down one of the corner spots and Matt Sanchez (Sr.) will start at safety. This season will mark the 14th year for Miller as the Skiatook head coach. The energy level is at an all-time high and the team is laser focused on making this season one of their best.

CLASS 4A

CASCIA HALL COMMANDOS Coach: JOE MEDINA

SCHEDULE: 9-1 – at Holland Hall 9-8 – vs. Bartlesville 9-15 – vs. Millwood 9-22 – at Wagoner 9-29 – at McLain 10-6 – vs. Miami 10-13 – vs. Vinita 10-19 – at Catoosa 10-27 – vs. Grove 11-3 – at Oologah

QUICK HITS: There has been no more consistent program in the state than Cascia Hall. The Commandos have made the playoffs 30 consecutive seasons.

Lewis Guillory had a banner game in a 37-14 win over Catoosa on October 20th. Guillory had two fumble recoveries and a sack on defense while catching 4 passes for 107 yards and a

touchdown on offense.

Cascia Hall ended Heritage Hall’s 38-game winning streak with a 32-7 victory over the Chargers in the second round of the playoffs. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 9-4 2015 - 7-5 2014 - 8-3 2013 - 9-2 2012 - 11-1

OFFENSE For the second consecutive season, Cascia Hall reached the Class 4A semifinals in 2016. That run included big playoff wins at Metro Christian and Heritage Hall. Seven offensive starters return from that team. The Commandos will be led on offense by quarterback Dalton Abney (6-0, 190, Sr.), who threw for 1,946 yards and 25 touchdowns last year. Receiver Tanner Swab (5-11, 180, Sr.) will be Abney’s top target this year after pulling in 26 passes for 438 yards and six touchdowns. Four of those touchdown catches came in the state semifinals, proving just how good the dynamic duo of Abney and Swab can be. Both players are also VYPE Top 100 selections this year and will be vying for the coveted Shelter Insurance Mr. Football Award. Other top pass catchers the Commandos will rely on this year are Pierce Lambert (6-0, 165, Jr.), Zyran Ray (6-1, 160, Jr.), Banks Wilson (Sr.) and Grant Warthan (5-10, 155, Sr.). Lambert and Ray are both deep threats while Wilson and Warthan are more possession type receivers. Tight ends Jackson Wagner

(6-2, 210, Sr.) and DaVeon Lee (6-1, 190, Sr.) will provide a downfield threat as well. Three starters return on the offensive line, led by Division I prospect Harrison McCormick (6-7, 260, Sr.). Anton Uhren (6-0, 205, Sr.) and Chase Taylor (6-0, 200, Sr.) will also help anchor the group in the trenches this season. The rushing attack this year will be handled by a stable of running backs, according to head coach Joe Medina. Lewis Guillory (5-9, 195, Sr.) is the front runner to be the starter this year but Harrison Hardman (5-5, 150, Sr.) and Jake Weller (So.) should both push for playing time. Fullbacks Bennett Boone (61, 205, Sr.), Marche Ashford (6-0, 190, Jr.) and Cam Oliver (5-10, 180, Jr.) also will play a major role in the rushing attack either as blockers or ball carriers. DEFENSE Cascia Hall prides itself on its “Blue Swarm” defense, which employs an aggressive 3-4 scheme. Boone will lead the way on defense from his spot at inside linebacker after tallying 101 tackles and nine tackles for loss in 2016. Joining Boone on the inside will be Oliver and Ashford. Outside linebackers Lee and Wagner along with Jacob Mailot (Sr.) give the Commandos nice depth at linebacker. On the defensive line, Johnathon Cowen (6-2, 230, Sr.) will pair with Guillory, Sam Reed (6-0, 230, Sr.) and Sam Coulon (6-2, 230, Jr.) to form one of the best defensive lines in the state. Swab will be the only returning starter in the

secondary but newcomers Brad Hensley (6-1, 170, Jr.), Joe Goddin (6-0, 170, Jr.) and Broc Kelley (6-0, 160, Jr.) all should make an immediate impact. Trevor Jones (5-11, 165, Jr.) and Ben Coonce (58, 131, Jr.) also should give Cascia Hall good depth in the defensive backfield.

QUICK HITS: Catoosa avenged a 24-21 loss at Vinita in 2015, by crushing the Hornets 76-7 on October 7th. The Indians have now won seven of the last eight meetings in the series.

Running back Jose Ortiz posted 22 carries for 152 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-33 win over Miami on October 14th.

TULSA AUGUST 2017

Matt Dillon 2012 - 5-6

OFFENSE Head coach Aaron Meier is looking forward to taking the field for another season of Catoosa football, and with seven returning starters it’s easy to see why. “We look forward to next year’s football season,” Meier said. “We have had a great offseason and the boys are excited.” Quarterback Daniel Queen (510, 160, Jr.) will run the pistol formation for the Indians and will look to get the ball to two talented skill players in Jose Ortiz (5-9, 165, Jr.) and Tyler Burch (5-10, 175, Sr.). Ortiz will start at tailback, while Burch will be a difference maker at wide receiver. The offensive line is solid with three more-thancapable players up front. Kevin Cohew (6-2, 240, Sr.), Riley Teutsch (6-4, 270, Jr.) and Derrick Banning (5-11, 250, Sr.) will anchor this line and give players like Ortiz an opportunity at glory. The offense looks to run a balanced attack and control the line of scrimmage and eat the clock. DEFENSE The focus on the defensive side of the ball will be stopping the run. Linebackers

Cameron Chilcoat (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Dalton Robertson (6-0, 180, Jr.) are two players that seem to be all over the field. Both guys can close with excellent speed and take good angles to the ball. Mike Dillon (6-2, 180, Sr.) is the stud in the secondary that the coaching staff will depend on for big plays. Burch will join Dillon in the secondary, while Banning will play both sides of the ball on the line. Yojahiro Ortiz (5-10, 235, Jr.) gets things started in the trenches and is expected to have a big season. The coaching staff this season includes Kevin Dotson, Joe McHenry, Mike Mobra, Steve Howard and Ed Yock.

CENTRAL BRAVES :

Coach: CLIFFORD SHAW SCHEDULE: 8-31 – vs. Memorial 9-8 – vs. McLain 9-15 – at Star-Spencer 9-22 – vs. Tecumseh 9-29 – at Tuttle 10-6 – vs. Bethany 10-13 – at Cleveland 10-19 – at Ada 10-27 – vs. Harrah 11-3 – at Blanchard

QUICK HITS: The Braves beat McLain for the second consecutive time 42-28 on October 9th.

Central’s last won a district championship in 1997. The Braves were elminated in the second round of the playoffs by Carl Albert 21-7. Willie Ponder scored the Braves only touchdown in the game on a pass from Jason Harris. Central has beaten an OKC Public schools team three

seasons in a row. This year the Braves travel to Star Spencer to face the Bobcats in week three. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 5-5 2015 - 2-8 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 3-7 2012 - 3-7

OFFENSE The Central Braves enter 2017 after an average finish in 2016. With new coach Clifford “Kip” Shaw at the helm, the Braves’ offense will have a mixture of experience and a lot of young talent looking to make an impact. The strength of this Central offense will undoubtedly be on the offensive line, with three returning starters that look to open some holes for the running game. Leading the O-line will be Chase Johnson (6-0, 260, Sr.), who comes into his senior season looking to provide some leadership. Wide receivers Andre Ramsey (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Cedric Ball (5-10, 160, Sr.) will showcase some talent at the skill positions for Central, with a new quarterback taking over. Apollo Kaku (5-10, 170, So.) will be the starting running back for the Braves in his sophomore season, and will need to adjust to the role quickly with his team counting on him. Kaku has a solid amount of athleticism and shiftiness that should be given a chance to shine behind that menacing offensive line. Shaw said quarterback will be the biggest question mark coming into this season, as multiple young players will compete for the position. DEFENSE The Braves’ defense also will have five returning starters this fall, with the defensive front being the tone setter. Defensive tackle Roman Crawford (6-3, 290, Sr.) will be the big threat on the line, as he will look to slow down the opponent’s running and passing game. The linebackers in this 4-3 defense also will be important to this unit, as David Atkinson (6-0, 215, So.), Marcus Jamison (5-11, 180, Jr.) and Malik Jones (6-2, 240, Sr.) have experience and the mindset to make plays

all over the field. This group of linebackers undoubtedly has great talent, but the question will be whether they can adjust to playing at the varsity level. Cedric Ball and Andre Ramsey will lead a strong secondary for Central, and they will have plenty of help around them. This unit will have great playmaking ability and would be expected to provide a few takeaways for this squad. The Braves certainly have the talent to fight for a playoff berth this fall, but with several young guys stepping in they will need to grow up in a hurry.

Coach: JARVIS PAYNE SR. SCHEDULE: 9-1 – at Webster 9-8 – at Tulsa Central 9-15 – vs. Will Rogers 9-22 – vs. Miami 9-29 – vs. Cascia Hall 10-6 – at Wagoner 10-13 – vs. Grove 10-19 – at Vinita 10-27 – vs. Oologah 11-3 – at Catoosa

QUICK HITS: McLain last won a state championship in 1987, beatingn Duncan 7-6. Cleon Burrell scored the only touchdown for the then Scots. The Titans and Miami will meet for the eighth consecutive season. McLain has won three of those seven mathcups but lost last year 21-20 at Miami on September 23rd. McLain and Booker T. Washington are separated by 2.8 miles in North Tulsa. The long-time rivals haven’t met since 2005. The last McLain victory in the series was 14-7 in 1997. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 1-9 2015 - 6-5 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 5-5 2012 - 7-3

OFFENSE The Titans offense will have some production to replace this season with only three starters returning, but that won’t stop them from competing. Cameron Fox (6-1, 185,

Sr.) will have the pressure to produce from the quarterback position, coming off a junior year in which he threw for 700 yards and rushed for 504 yards and eight touchdowns. His team knows what he’s capable of, but consistency will be important for a long season. Tre Jones (5-7, 168, Sr.) is another crucial component to the McLain offense this season, as his speed and shiftiness will be relied upon to spark this offensive unit. Catching the ball 22 times for 305 yards while also rushing for 413 yards and five touchdowns last season, Jones will be used in a variety of ways in hopes of keeping the defense guessing. The Titans also will use multiple offensive formations in their attack, and that, combined with a couple of experienced players, will hopefully bring improvement.

DEFENSE For McLain to have success this season, the defense will have to provide the inspiration. With four starters returning, the defense has a mixture of experience and youth that should combine to be an exciting and determined side. Danaco Todd (5-9, 255, Sr.) will be the main cog for this attacking style of defense, as his total of 89 tackles last season from the linebacker position shows that he can make plays. Todd also had one fumble recovery for a touchdown, which highlights good ball skills for a big guy. Defensive back Abraham Calamease (5-8, 158, Jr.) will also look to make his presence felt after picking up 43 tackles last year. Calamease will be working alongside first-time starter and fellow junior Robert Coleman (5-8, 159. Jr.) in a secondary that needs to limit the big plays. Linebacker Richard Briggs (6-0, 200, Sr.) rounds up the defense, bringing in five sacks and 41 tackles from the previous year. His determination to get in the opponents’ backfield will be critical for the Titans’ defense.

QUICK HITS: Metro Christian began playing football in 1983 and has an all-time record of 238133 for a winning percentage of 64.1. Colton Stacy caught three touchdown passes in a 4225 win at Broken Bow on October 20th. Stacy will go from catching the passes to throwing them this year at quarterback.

Cascia Hall’s mastery of Metro Christian continued in 2016 with the Commandoes shutting out the Patriots in the first round of the playoffs. Cascia is 7-0 all-time in the series with five shutouts. LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 9-2 2015 - 7-3 2014 - 10-3 2013 - 11-1 2012 - 10-3

OFFENSE Metro Christian enters the 2017 season with a few questions to answer on the offensive line. Regardless of the uncertainty on the line, head coach Jared McCoy is excited to have this group of players to coach this season. “We’ve got a great group of kids,” McCoy said. “We’ll be young at the offensive and defensive line positions, but we should get better as the year goes along.” A pair of receivers will have a big role in the passing game for the Patriots this year. Hayden Gurley (6-4, 205, Sr.) and Colton Stacy (5-11, 165, Sr.) are productive players with big-play capabilities. 25

Metro Christian Gurley caught 20 balls for 285 yards and five touchdowns, while Stacy accounted for 40 receptions and 731 yards with eight touchdowns. Griffen Campbell (5-11, 185, Sr.) joins the Patriots and adds yet another weapon to the passing game. The running game will feature versatile Ryan Johnson (5-10, 165, So.). Johnson is a factor in the passing game as well. As a freshman, he caught 14 passes for 166 yards and added 33 carries for 221 yards and four touchdowns. Nik Thomas (5-11, 260, Sr.) is a ground pounder who carried the ball 36 times last year for 153 yards and three touchdowns. The offensive line is anchored by John Cieri (6-0, 220, Sr.), whose leadership will be important in helping younger players develop. DEFENSE Four starters on the defensive side of the ball return to the starting lineup this season. Defensive back Joey Acker (5-11, 165, Sr.) grabbed four interceptions and 65 tackles last year to lead the returning starters. Stacy joins Acker in the secondary, bringing a solid set of skills defending the pass. Stacy notched two interceptions and 30 tackles last year. Gurley will play outside linebacker, where he recorded 45 tackles, four sacks and two fumble recoveries. Inside linebacker Cade Kimzey (5-10, 190, Sr.) returns to the team after not playing in 2016. His return will be a welcome addition to the lineup. Thomas will start on the defensive line, where he accounted for 22 tackles in 2016, while Harrison Blake (6-4, 200, Jr.) will play defensive end. Blake had 15 tackles and two sacks last season. Look for the Patriot defense

to move around and give many different fronts and coverages for their opponents to work against.

WILL ROGERS ROPERS

Coach: JAMES BURKHALTER SCHEDULE: 8-25 – vs. Christian Heritage 9-1 – at Okmulgee 9-15 – at McLain 9-22 – vs. Broken Bow 9-28 – vs. Sallisaw 10-5 – at Hilldale 10-13 – vs. Fort Gibson 10-19 – at Poteau 10-27 – vs. Metro Christian 11-3 – at Stilwell LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 2-8 2015 - 3-7 2014 - 4-6 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 1-8

OFFENSE Head coach Rob Gilbreath is back for his second season with the Ropers and looks to improve on last season with an increased determination and hard-work ethic during the offseason. Working out of the single wing formation, Will Rogers wants to use a strong passing attack in 2017. How much success the Ropers have through the air will depend on the play of quarterback Lafayette Wright (6-4, 175, Sr.), who passed for more than 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. His main target once again will be Keishun Johnson (5-11, 170, Sr.), whom Wright found 26 times last season for 749 yards (a 28.8-yard average) and 11 touchdowns. Along the offensive line, the Ropers will rely upon Jermaine Moore (6-0, 220, Sr.) to provide leadership and experience as six starters return on the offensive side of the ball.

DEFENSE Johnson brings his big-play ability to the defensive side of the ball as the Ropers’ free safety, recording 23 solo tackles and 34 total. Moore saw plenty of time in opposing teams’ backfields a season ago from the defensive end spot, totaling 41 tackles, six for loss and two sacks. At linebacker in the 4-4 stack, Larry Jones (5-11, 175, Sr.) and Jamison Wortham (5-10, 160, So.) combined for over 100 tackles and bring that production back this season. The ability of Jones and Wortham to pick up the new defense will be important in the success of the unit as a whole

and the team. Will Rogers will play three Thursday games this season and will have to adjust to that when it comes to recovery and game preparations throughout the season.

205, Sr.) is quick to the ball and hits with purpose. Green and Lawley may be the best linebacker tandem in the class. Kody Stanley (6-2, 225, Jr.) is the rush end the Chiefs will depend on for pressuring the quarterback. Gaches will start at nose guard, while Sharp will start in his usual safety spot. Corey Bradford (5-9, 150, Sr.) is the best cover corner on the team. On paper, Berryhill is one of the favorites going into 2017, but this team is more than a paper giant. The Chiefs have the weapons on offense and the studs on defense to dominate.

Cook (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Rashawn Penny (5-7, 185, Jr.). On the outside, look for Trevounce Harris (5-9, 150, Sr.) and Jeremiah Stites (5-10, 165, Sr.) to make plenty of plays as two of the Warriors’ top receivers. In a district that should be very competitive the Warriors will need to put up plenty of points if they hope to compete for a spot in the playoffs.

BERRYHILL CHIEFS Coach: PAT HARPER LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 12-1 2015 - 8-4 2014 - 10-2 2013 - 9-3 2012 - 9-2

OFFENSE Fans of hard-nosed football will love Berryhill, and head coach Pat Harper expects to continue the winning tradition in 2017. Six starters return for the Chiefs, including tailback Brady Williams (5-10, 175, Sr.). Williams is a hard runner and is tough to bring down. Opening holes up front is guard Blake Coon (5-11, 240, Sr.). Coon is joined on the line by Nico Lopez (6-2, 230, So.) at center and James Gaches (6-1, 290, Sr.) at tackle. A pair of receivers in Cory Alexander (6-0, 165, Sr.) and Josh Sharp (6-2, 190, Sr.) figure heavily into the passing game. Sharp was selected to the VYPE Top 100 for his play at receiver and at safety. “We should be good on both sides of the ball,” Harper said. “Big-play athletes that should make things happen on both offense and defense. Returning a lot of players who have experience and know how to win.” DEFENSE Physical and fast is the best way to describe the Chiefs’ defense. Coach: KENNETH JACKSON LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 5-5 2015 - 4-6 2014 - 4-6 2013 - 0-10 2012 – 1-9

OFFENSE After finishing 2016 with a 5-5 record, the Daniel Webster Warriors will need to replace a lot of offensive starters this season, as only three players return from last season. Up front, Webster will turn to Donavon Sowell (6-2, 310, Sr.) and Dylan High (6-2, 225, Jr.) to lead the way and open up holes for a dynamic rushing attack. Running through those holes will be backs Dominique

TULSA AUGUST 2017

DEFENSE Webster will be much more experienced on defense this year than offense. Six starters return to the Webster defense and will be led by a very strong group of linebackers. The tip of the spear for that group of big-hitting playmakers will be Malik Dixon (6-1, 255, Sr.) at middle linebacker. Nick Taylor (5-10, 170, Sr.) will also start at outside linebacker. Up front, the Warriors will have three very talented linemen anchoring their 4-3 scheme. Andre Garcia (5-10, 230, Sr.) and Demarcus Graves (6-1, 220, Jr.) will team with High in the trenches giving the Warriors a formidable front seven. In the defensive backfield, look for Stites to bring his talent and athleticism to the defensive side of the ball, giving the Warriors playmakers at every level on defense. LINCOLN CHRISTIAN BULLDOGS Coach: JERRY RICKE LAST 5 YEARS:

OFFENSE The 2016 season was an excellent one for Lincoln Christian, and with new head coach Jerry Ricke taking over, the Bulldogs are hoping for much of the same. Last year, Lincoln Christian finished the season at 10-3 and made a run to the Class 3A state quarterfinals. Adler Isbell (5-10, 165, Sr.) is the top offensive threat for the Bulldogs at wide receiver, on an offensive squad that has its fair share of inexperience. He had a solid season in 2016, in which he recorded 670 receiving yards and showcased his big play ability. At running back, Dillon Hair (5-8, 175, Jr.) and Brendyn Harris (5-8, 165, Jr.) both will see time in the backfield, coming off very productive seasons. Coach’s son and quarterback Chase Ricke (6-0, 160, So.) will battle it out with Ethan Harpe (6-1, 185, Jr.) for starting quarterback honors, with both bringing exceptional talent to the table. Ricke said his offense will count on the 1-2 punch of Hair and Harris until the new quarterback finds his consistency. DEFENSE The Lincoln Christian defense comes into 2017 with a little more experience than the offense, as they have six returning starters on this side of the ball. Micah Gardner (6-0, 205, Sr.), Zak Moore (6-0, 190, Sr.) and Jace Ward (6-2, 215, Jr.) all had an outstanding 2016 campaign, and will hope to improve upon that this season. Among the three of them, they collected more than 275 tackles and were the engine of the Bulldogs’ 3-4 defense. Ian Whitmarsh (6-1, 2015, Sr.) is the starting defensive end, as he will look to create pressure in the opponents’ backfield. Whitmarsh had 57 tackles and six sacks last season, as his tenacity and determination paid off. Ricke said the key for his defense will be the linebacker play and team speed. With

a young group of players on both sides of the ball, the defense will need to step up to the challenge for Lincoln Christian. HOLLAND HALL DUTCH : Coach: TAG GROSS LAST 5 YEARS: 2016 - 8-5 2015 - 3-6 2014 - 3-7 2013 - 3-6 2012 - 4-6

OFFENSE In their first year of OSSAA competition, the Holland Hall Dutch finished with an 8-5 record and advanced all the way to the Class

2A quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Millwood. With that experience under their belt, the Dutch are optimistic about this season, according to head coach Tag Gross. “We are very excited about the 2017 season,” Gross said. “We are capable of making a run at a state championship if we stay healthy.” Leading the offense this season will be 10 returning starters. Chief among those returners is Drake Roush (6-0, 175, Jr.) at quarterback. A year ago Roush threw for 1,642 yards and 20 touchdowns and also ran for 694 yards and nine touchdowns. Roush’s top target this year will be Corbin Daniels (6-1, 175, Sr.) at wide receiver. In 2016, Daniels had 23 catches for 478 yards and nine touchdowns and is expected to see those numbers increase this year. Another threat in the passing game this year will be tight end Vance Mullendore (6-4, 220, Jr.), who caught 11 passes last year for 77 yards and one touchdown. In the backfield, look for tailbacks Joe Smith (5-10,

Drake Roush 195, Sr.) and John Connor (5-10, 185, Sr.) to get plenty of carries this season. In 2016, Smith ran for 491 yards and five touchdowns on 75 carries while Connor picked up 572 yards on 89 carries and had five scores. The two backs will operate behind an offensive line led by Jackson Ostroski (6-2, 245, Sr.) who will start at center. DEFENSE The Dutch also will be experienced on defense this year with seven starters returning from a year ago. On the defensive line, fans can expect to see Jake Jackson (6-1, 190, Jr.) making plays each and every Friday night. Jackson, who recorded 127 tackles and two sacks last year, may also play some

linebacker as well, which is also where Connor and Mullendore will play on the defensive side of the ball. Last season Conner racked up 194 tackles and two sacks while Mullendore finished with 85 tackles and five sacks. In the secondary, Darrin Arnold (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Toby Clark (5-7, 165, Jr.) will get plenty of time at cornerback after combining for 55 tackles and one interception a year ago. Daniels will also be a key cog in the defensive backfield as the team’s strong safety. Coming off a season in which he made 103 tackles, picked off two passes and had a defensive touchdown Daniels is expected to be a major difference maker every week. OFFENSE Expectations for a Ron Smith football team are always high, and he would not have it any other way. The Conquerors won 13 games last season and were state runner-up in Class 2A. “State runner-up stinks,” Smith said. That’s a sentiment this team has rallied around, and has become focused on taking

Caleb Calhoon that final step to becoming champions. Leading the way is running back Tyler Hicks (5-10, 168, Sr.). As a junior, Hicks was nearly unstoppable, and for his career he has rushed for more than 3,300 yards and 35 touchdowns. Caleb Calhoon (6-2, 192, Sr.) has enjoyed a great career at Victory, amassing more than 2,400 yards receiving with 29 touchdowns. Getting them the ball is quarterback R.J. Wakley (6-2, 202, Sr.). As a junior, Wakley threw for 2,757 yards with 29 touchdowns. Wakley and Calhoon were named to the VYPE Top 100 list this summer. Also look for wide receiver Trey Colbert (5-9, 164, Sr.) to have an impact this year. The offensive line features J.P. Hook (5-11, 220, Sr.) at center and Braiden Murray (6-3, 265, Jr.) at tackle. Each player graded out at 94 percent in 2016. DEFENSE Team speed is what makes the Conqueror defense go. Calhoon is a tackling machine in the secondary with 276 career tackles and 12 interceptions heading into this final season. Hicks grabbed 117 tackles last year and picked off seven pass attempts. Wakley will likely start at linebacker where he played in 2016. Over his career on defense, Wakley has 202 tackles. Murray goes both ways as well, playing on the defensive line. Murray had 64 tackles and four sacks as a sophomore. Smith will stay in the 3-4 defense, giving his playmakers an opportunity to

use their speed and ability to swarm the football. SCHEDULE 8-25 – at Okmulgee 9-1 – vs. Bristow 9-8 – at Sperry 9-15 vs. NOAH 9-22 – vs. Kansas 9-29 – at Ketchum 10-6 – vs. Colcord 10-13 – at Chouteau 10-19 – vs. Sequoyah Tahlequah 10-27 – at Salina 11-3 – vs. Holland Hall

REJOICE CHRISTIAN EAGLES COACH: BRENT MARLEY LAST 5 YEARS: 2012 - 11-2 2013 - 12-1 2014 - 6-6 2015 - 9-4 2016 - 10-2

OFFENSE Rejoice Christian made a run to the second round of the state tournament last season, and with a corps of talent coming back, coach Brent Marley’s side will try to surpass that. Finishing 10-2 in 2016, Rejoice Christian has seven players from that offensive unit returning this season. Andrew Crow (6-0, 165, Jr.) will lead the way at running back in his junior campaign, after picking up 950 yards on the ground with 17 touchdowns last year. Quarterback Riley Walker (5-10, 155, So.) will have a big task on his hands as he has taken over the starting position. Walker, who was the backup in 2016, threw for 815 yards and eight touchdowns. He will have a strong group 28

of wide receivers to support him with Bryce Sanchez (6-0, 190, Sr.), Chapman Pennington (6-4, 180, Sr.), Matt Nicholson (6-3, 180, Sr.) and others looking to make plays. DEFENSE The Eagles will have five returning starters in their 3-4 formation, and will look to replace two All-State graduates. Similar to offense, Andrew Crow will be a key part of the Rejoice Christian defense after he recorded 42 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two interceptions in 2016. Defensive tackle Clayton Hurst will look to clog up any holes opposing offenses might create. After missing much of last season with an injury, Hurst will be eager to make an impact in his senior campaign. Starting his third season at Rejoice Christian, Marley said his squad will have a good group of players coming back, as his players have worked hard to make it to the next level. OFFENSE Head coach Todd Fulps returns five players on the offensive side of the ball, but the team is still young and the younger players will need to mature quickly. “We will be young at several key positions,” Fulps said. “We must stay healthy.” Bradley Fritch (6-0, 175, Sr.) has thrown for more than 1,500 yards in the last two seasons, making him one very productive quarterback. The Eagles also feature one of the best offensive linemen in the district in Kieren Tabor

balls for 1m659 yards and 30 touchdowns making him the most prolific receiver in the state. Drew Mareburger (5-11, 165, Jr.) is another big play receiver that had 58 receptions for 1,212 yards and 13 touchdowns. Add Tanner Muckey (5-10, 155, Sr.) and you have the makings of a spread offense that’s nearly impossible to stop. Running backs Ben Bayless (6-2, 180, Sr.) and Harrison Smith (5-8, 145, So.) give a nice change of pace and will keep the linebackers honest. DEFENSE The defensive line will feature Tyler McPheeters (Sr.) up front with Bayless and Pruitt Durham (6-1, 165, So.) at linebacker. McPheeters is a quiet leader on and off the field. Bayless will return after missing nine games in 2016 after undergoing surgery on his thumb. Bayless is the emotional leader of the defense. Evan Shapleigh (6-2, 180, Sr.) is a quick defensive end that brings experience to the field. Mareburger and Smith will play in the secondary giving the Rams two athletic players that play with a high football IQ. Mareburger is fearless and plays a physical style of football. “There is a lot of excitement surrounding the 2017 football season here at Regent. We are opening a brand new stadium and it is very exciting to see this great senior class providing stability and leadership. Great team unity and chemistry,” said coach Bishop.

DEFENSE VYPE Top 100 selectee and one of the best linebackers in the class, Daniel Giddens (6-1, 205, Sr.) returns to lead the Eagle defense in his final year of high school football. Giddens has the talent to play at the next level and has proven to be a major commodity to Summit Christian. Last season he recorded 205 tackles and is the leading tackler in school history. The Eagles will run the 4-3 defense, keeping it simple and going back to basics.
