THE ISSUE: LACK OF VENTILATION DURING CPAP THERAPY
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) administered via nasal prongs has dramatically improved survival rates in the premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome. However, marked bowel distensions (also called “CPAP belly syndrome“) has been associated with this increased use of nasal CPAP and usually occurs as the infant‘s respiratory status improves and the baby becomes more vigorous.(1)
This “CPAP belly syndrome“ is likely to lead to withhold feed, prolong the use of parenteral nutrition(2) and extend to include clinical scenario mimicking a “necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) scare”.
It was observed that continuous venting of gastric air using open-air drainage of the oro-gastric tube resulted in decompression of the abdominal distension.(3)
Internal studies(4) show that connectors and lateral openings at the feeding tube‘s tip are not causing air drainage insufficiency, but the inner diameter of the feeding tube is.
VYGON developed a new nutrisafe2 high flow feeding tube, with a larger inner diameter but keeping the same outer diameter.
