The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in September. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Roscarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car.

Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cortina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a decade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and driveways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

End of the line, Ferris & Dowds Call For 450 IrishHeritage Rail Status For Glen employees cut Written by Pieter Mens IRISH Rail has announced that it is to ask 450 of its staff to take “a voluntary severance package” Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann spokesperson Barry Kenny stated that the voluntary redundancies were part of a range of measures to help the transport body to cope with on-going losses. The company has been reducing staff numbers for the past 10 years. In 2002, there were 6,200 employees – now there are 4,100. He said that costs were €413.3m in 2008 and were €344m in 2011. “End of the line, 450 Irish Rail employees cut”

Pick Up Points

Story continued from page one

THIS comes on the back of the Government dramatically withdrawing a €36m bailout for CIE that it had approved just two months ago with the aim of preventing these major cuts in bus and rail services. The Transport Minister stated that this bailout would ensure CIE remained “adequately funded for the immediate future”. But now it seems the semi-state company will have to go ahead with these redundancies and either sell assets or borrow money to keep their services in operation this year. An employee of CIE of nearly 20 years who prefers not to be named told BizBlitz that “the government don’t seem to care, even this week Leo Varadkar said that if CIE

don’t improve matters then they can go under and he’s meant to be the minister of transport”. He added about the withdrawal of the 36million, “To be honest it wouldn’t have made a difference, we spend 50million on diesel alone a year”. The only answer he could give on what the CIE can do to survive was “to go private”. The U-turn also means that further measures might have to be implicated, such as withdrawal of some services as well as possible garage closures and pay freezes. And we have no doubt there will be more fare increases on top of the already ludicrous prices. In a press release Fianna Fail Transport Spokesperson, Timmy Dooley TD, has expressed his concern at this withdrawal saying “This whole episode has revealed a lack of planning, and a lack of understanding of the most basic economics. You can’t offer CIE this lifeline and then suddenly take it away without explanation”. He goes on to say that the price hikes have contributed to falling passenger numbers, adding that “the Minister has allowed massive price hikes. When he was in opposition Minister Varadkar hit out at fare increases; this seems to have changed now he is in Government.”

A new court ruling has suggested that there may be a direct link between mobile phone usage and brain tumours. The Italian Supreme court made the ruling this October, after Italian businessman Innocente Marcolini was diagnosed with a brain tumour after being required to be on his mobile phone for work purposes for up to 6 hours a day. The ruling is expected to create several similar cases being brought to court, which could leave several leading mobile phone manufacturers in hot water. The court decided that there was a “casual” link between heavy mobile phone usage and brain cancer, and enough to warrant a cause for concern. After winning the case, Marcolini expressed his relief that the issue can now be highlighted on a global basis and hopes that

more awareness will be created as a result of the ruling. “This is significant for very many people. I wanted this problem to become public because many people still do not know the risks,” “I was on the phone, usually the mobile, for at least five or six hours every day at work. I wanted it recognised that there was a link between my illness and the use of mobile and cordless phones. Parents need to know their children are at risk of this illness,” he urged. As a result of his tumour, Marcolini was left with his face paralysed and takes morphine daily for the pain, and although benign, it was life threatening as it spread to his carotid artery, the major vessel which carries blood to the brain. Italian oncologist Angelo Levis has said that the ruling is a big step towards highlighting the issue of mobile phones and brain cancer to the public.

Hayes encourages local schools to enter Newgrange Winter Solstice competition Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Brian Hayes has announced major changes for the Winter Solstice in Newgrange Chamber on December 21st.

Minister Hayes stated “Admission to Newgrange on December 21st has been traditionally done from a draw

– entered by thousands of people around the world. This year alone there were 30,000 entrants, proof of the enduring popularity of this amazing annual cultural showpiece.” Minister Hayes continued, “This year however I have reduced the number of tickets in the draw and will instead offer six lucky school children along with their parent/guardian the opportunity to enter New-

grange Chamber and witness this spectacular event. In order to enter the competition the OPW will be running an Art Competition for school children aged 10 years and over.” Minister Hayes concluded. “I have today wrote to all local primary schools encouraging them to participate in this competition. It would be great to have a local person present to witness this event.”

Pieta house is chosen as Superquinn Lucan’s charity of choice Written by Phillip O’Shea ONE million people across

the globe die by suicide each year, that’s one suicide every 40 seconds. The number of suicides in Ireland rose to 525 in 2011, an increase of 7% on the previous year according to CSO figures. A total of 439 men and 86 women were recorded as having taken their own lives. For every death from suicide, it is estimated there are 10 – 30 times as many attempted suicides or episodes of self-harm. Suicidal behaviour is a complex phenomenon that usually occurs along a continuum, progressing from suicidal thoughts, to planning, to attempting suicide, and finally dying by suicide. Pieta House, the

centre for the prevention of self harm and suicide opened its doors in January 2006 and has helped over 4,000 people since then. About 9 years ago, Joan Freeman, a practising psychologist, closed down her own counselling business and dedicated her time to finding out how she could help people who were suicidal. After three years of research, she opened up Pieta House in Lucan, Co. Dublin. It quickly became a respected and recognised service for those who were suicidal. They have since opened treatment centre’s in Ballyfermot, Finglas, Tallaght and Limerick. Treatment at Pieta House is free of charge and you do not need a doctors referral and

you do not need to be linked in with a psychiatrist. If you are concerned about someone you know be it a family member, a friend or yourself you can make a referral by ringing (01) 601 0000 or email mary@pieta.ie As 80% of Pieta Houses income comes from donations and fund raising events, it is with great pleasure that Superquinn Lucan have announced that they have chosen Pieta House as their charity of choice for their making a difference locally program. The program was officially opened on the 12th October by Superquinn Lucan manager Ken O’Toole and Volunteer and fund raising co-ordinator with Pieta House Marie Peelo.

Superquinn Lucan will be selling their ultimate chocolate biscuit cakes in store, they are a combination of buttery digestive biscuits and golden syrup smothered in a rich coverture milk chocolate finished with honeycomb. The best thing is that these delicious treats are guilt free because Superquinn have pledged to donate 80 cent from the sale of each cake to Pieta House. They have raised 1,900 Euro to date and with your help will raise much more needed funds for Pieta Houses counselling services.

NEW reports suggest that

66% of Irish voters are in support of the constitution being changed to allow full same-sex marriages. These new figures were taken from the Behaviour and Attitudes poll which was published in the Sunday Times. Younger voters and women were the strongest demographic looking for the change, while 57% of those ages above 55 were also in favour of this. The news comes as the Táinaiste Eamon Gilmore has expressed his support for the cause, claiming that Ireland needs to complete its transition towards a society which is fully tolerant towards the gay community. Speaking at the annual European International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual

and Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) conference, Gilmore said that he was more than proud of the change in Irish attitudes regarding the gay community from the last generation to the current generation. “There is a generation of young Irish people, for whom the Ireland of 20 or 30 years ago would be almost unrecognisable. Thousands of young LGBTI persons, who in the past would have felt the need to live elsewhere, have opted to stay in Ireland. They have enriched the country and made it a more tolerant place,” he said Gilmore also stressed that “the question of same-sex marriage is one that will be considered by our forthcoming Constitutional Convention. an innovation in Irish democracy, where citizens and public representatives will come together to consider what changes might be made to our Constitution, so that it better reflects not just the society we are now, but the society we aspire to.” Currently, there are eleven countries worldwide (Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Sweden) and several subnational jurisdictions such as those in Mexico and the US which allow same-sex couples to marry. Several countries, including Ireland, the UK, Australia, France and Germany currently allow civil ceremonies between same-sex couples.

introduced to Irish roads which will require all newly qualified drivers to display an ‘N’ plate on their windows once they have passed their driving tests. The proposed measure is part of the new Road Traffic Bill, which is expected to be officially published by the end of 2012. The new law is likely to come into effect next summers, with the ‘N’ plate branding the newly qualified driver as a ‘novice’ for 2 years after passing the initial exam. Drivers who obtain a provisional license will still be required to display an ‘L’ plate on their vehicle. Other laws which are expected to be introduced under the new Road Traffic Bill include the fact that both learners and novices could potentially lose their licenses if they

receive more than 6 penalty points. Fully experienced drivers still must receive up to 12 penalty points before their license is revoked. Another measure to hit Irish roads in 2013 for inexperienced drivers is that an acceptable blood alcohol level for these individuals will be significantly lower for them compared with that of more experienced drivers. Inexperienced drivers will be allowed a blood-alcohol limit of only 20mg per 100ml of blood. These proposed changes are said to be the latest efforts to reduce the number of deaths or injuries on Irish roads, and the RSA has suggested that the new rules will reward good drivers and will make younger people a lot more vigilant. Speaking on RTÉ’s morning Ireland programme, the Chief Executive

of the RSA, Noel Brett, said: “We’re trying to target those most at risk of killing and being killed on our roads, and those are young and inexperienced drivers. “What we’re trying to do is reward good behaviour and kind of a ‘polluter pays’ principle. Those who misbehave are those who feel the pain,” he continued. Brett has praised young Irish drivers, but says that more caution needs to be taken if Ireland is to continue in decreasing the amount of casualties on the road every year. “Our belief at this point is that the vast majority of young people here have a good attitude to road safety. If you behave yourself as a novice then you will have no problem. And our overall goal is to make Ireland one of the safest places to drive in Europe,” he concluded.

Live Register Decreases THE number of people signing on the Live Register has dropped by 1,000 in October. New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that a total of 434,200 people were on the Live Register last month the lowest figure this year. Minister for Finance Michael Noonan said that there are some signs now that the domes-

tic economy is beginning to bottom out and that there is some hope for the future. Although the figures also revealed that the number of long-term claimants rose by 4.6% to 188,117. The CSO said the number of men who are long-term claimants increased by 2% in the year to October, while the increase for women was 11.5%.

Pyrite Resolution Board overdue but welcome FIANNA Fáil Environment Spokesperson Barry Cowen has described the Government’s commitment to establishing a Pyrie Resolution Board as overdue, but welcome. Deputy Cowen commented, “There has been far too much foot-dragging on this issue, particularly over the past year, and it will come as a relief now to the thousands families affected that there is finally some resolution in sight. “There are a number of questions still outstanding. For instance, will there be a time limit to this resolution process? There are many homes now which do not yet show visible signs of pyrite damage. Will these homeowners have access to the resolution process in years to come? Will

there be a testing mechanism to establish which developments are affected by pyrite? “For some time now I have been calling on the Minister to go further than the recommendations of the Pyrite Report and to ensure that all of those culpable contribute to the cost of repairing the damaged homes. I very much welcome the fact that the Minister has now agreed to establish a Resolution Board and has given the stakeholders 10 days to respond. “I intend to hold the Minister to this deadline. The damage, disappointment and financial pressure suffered by innocent homeowners who purchased their homes in good faith only to see them gradually collapse in front of their eyes must be con-

fronted by the government. Those thousands of ordinary families whose homes are now ruined by pyrite need to know that everything is being done to put this right. “The Minister has my full support in establishing the Resolution Board and implementing all of the recommendations of the Pyrite Report. This is a first and essential step towards justice for these homeowners – but it cannot stop here. We need more detail about the resolution process. I am also repeating my call for the establishment of a Planning Regulator to ensure that the lack of oversight that we saw for years in Dublin City Council and elsewhere will not be allowed to happen again.”

PLEBISCITE ON MAYOR WILL GIVE DUBLINERS THEIR SAY FINE Gael TD for Dublin North and former Mayor of Fingal County Council, Alan Farrell, has suggested that citizens in all local authorities should have the opportunity to decide by plebiscite whether they want their own directly elected Mayor. Deputy Farrell made his comments following the announcement by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, that Dublin will have a plebiscite in 2014. The announcement was part of wider changes to local authorities proposed by Minister Hogan. “I am pleased by the proposed changes to our local authorities announced by Minister Hogan. They will help create a more efficient, more accountable and more repre-

sentative local authority system in Ireland. “I firmly believe that all members of the public, and not just those in Dublin, should have the opportunity to vote on whether they would like their own Mayor. A Mayor that is directly elected and therefore directly accountable to the people will enhance the role and function of each local authority, putting the citizen at the heart of decision making. “The authority of Councillors has been eroded over the decades and in particular by the 2001 Local Government Act. The changes proposed by Minister Hogan today will create a more defined management structure at local authority level. “I believe the Dublin Mayoral

plebiscite will provide the opportunity for an important wider debate on how well the councils are managed and accountable to the people. For this reason, I would urge Minister Hogan to consider extending the Mayoral plebiscite to all local authorities. “The reduction in councils from 114 to 31 and the reduction in numbers of Councillors by 42% shows that this Government is determined to make local government more efficient and is not afraid to take decisions that are in the best interest of the electorate. “Moreover, the changes will enable savings of €420 million which in the current climate is most welcome.”

Government decides the location for the New Children’s Hospital A key decision, related to the most important single building project in the State, has been made by the Government. The Cabinet has decided to develop the New Children’s Hospital at the campus of St James’s Hospital in Dublin. The decision, announced by Minister for Health Dr James Reilly, the Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald and Minister of State Alex White, will pave the way for the construction of a hospital that will be of benefit to many future generations of Irish children. The decision also ends a period of uncertainty around the project in the wake of the rejection by An Bord Pleanála of plans to develop the hospital on the site of the Mater Hospital in Dublin. Speaking at the announcement of

the decision at a press conference in Government Buildings, Minister Reilly said, “there is no building project to which the Government attaches a greater importance. A nation can be judged on the treatment of its children. This Government regards the building of the New Children’s Hospital as a key priority and no effort will be spared in expediting its completion”. The decision to choose the St James’s site from among the range of options presented in the Dolphin report ensures that the planned co-location with an adult hospital and, ultimately, tri-location with a maternity hospital, will be delivered. In identifying the new site, the Government has carefully considered the report of the Dolphin Group which was established last March

to consider the issues along with detailed supplementary information on cost, time and planning which was subsequently sought from members of the Group with the relevant technical expertise. The decision has been led by clinical considerations. It is essential that the new children’s hospital can deliver best clinical outcomes for our children. Co-location with St James’s and, ultimately, tri-location with a maternity hospital on the St James’s campus, will the Government believes provide the excellence in clinical care that our children deserve. The Government also considered the very significant issues of planning, cost, time and access. Based on the detailed information available from the Dolphin process, it is confident

that the hospital can be and will be built as quickly as possible on the St James’s site. The three existing children’s hospitals have been working closely together over recent years in readiness for the transition to a single hospital. In tandem with today’s decision, the Minister has decided that the three hospitals should become a single Hospital Group as soon as possible, with a single governance structure, a single budget and a single voice for children’s healthcare. The new children’s hospital is now urgently required. This Government is determined to ensure that it is delivered.

Written by Pieter Mens IT has emerged this week that Disney is paying $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind “Star Wars,” from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It’s also making a seventh movie in the “Star Wars” series called “Episode 7,” set for release in 2015, with plans to follow it with Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years.

The Walt Disney Co. announced the blockbuster agreement to make the purchase in cash and stock. The deal includes Lucasfilm’s prized high-tech production companies, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, as well as rights to the “Indiana Jones” franchise. Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the purchase is a great fit and will help preserve and grow the “Star Wars” franchise. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.” In a statement George Lucas said “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next.

It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. “I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.” Kathleen Kennedy, the current cochairman of Lucasfilm, will become the division’s president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas will be creative consultant on new “Star Wars” films. The deal comes on the heels of Disney’s 2009 acquisition of Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion and its 2006 purchase of Pixar Animation Studios for $7 billion, two potent entertainment brands that appeal to families. We are not sure how happy Star Wars fans will be about this news, but we feel that Disney could do no worse than Lucas did on Episodes I II and III of the franchise. Only time will tell how strong the force is in Disney.

Chinese man sues wife after she gives birth to ‘ugly’ baby A CHINESE man Jian Feng has filed a lawsuit against his wife after she gave birth to the couple’s daughter. After his wife gave birth to the “incredibly ugly” baby, he started making accusations about her having an affair, because he couldn’t believe that his “beautiful” wife could give birth to such an ugly baby. "I married my wife out of love, but as soon as we had our first daughter, we began having marital issues. Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me." DNA tests proved the child was his. It emerged that Mrs Feng had

undergone €77,000 worth of plastic surgery in South Korea, before the couple married. The Northern Chinese man, according to a report from PlanetIvy.com, divorced his wife and sued her, apparently, for being ugly — and won. He was awarded $120,000 from his wife. The judge in the case stated that she had tricked him into marrying her under “false pretences”, as Mr Feng did not know about the plastic surgery, and was only told about it after he accused her of the affair.

Superquinn Walkinstown Family Fun Day A great day was had by all who attended Superquinns fundraising day for Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross on the 29th of October in Walkinstown. The event coincided with this years Dublin City Marathon, with Superquinn been perfectly located at the official halfway point of the race. There was an amazing show of support from the local Walkinstown community. And all the parents and children really enjoyed the d.j, bouncing castles, face painting and BBQ, as well as a visit from the Liam McCarthy Cup. Thankfully the rain held off which was great! We are happy to say we raised a little over €1,000, which will go directly to Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross – Our chosen charity for the year. We had fantastic volunteers and help on the day from Salon Rouge, The White Orchid Beauty Salon, Crumlin Youth Marching Band, Walkinstown Youth Club and Foley’s School of Irish Dance. And we would like to thank them and you for helping such a worthy cause!

Is Ireland about to become workout crazy? Written by John Bodkin A new workout craze is set to hit Ireland in 2013, which could push similar high-intensity workout classes straight off the map. “Relentless” is a power workout, which includes up to 75 minutes of high-intensity cardio and strength activities including squats, push-ups and sit-ups. Billed as the new “super workout”, it was founded in New York City by former competitive boxer Sam Lopez, and has already taken America by storm, offering no gimmicks other than pure fitness. Lopez, who is now 44, created the workout programme in an attempt to stay in optimum shape as he was getting older. “Agility, balance, coordination and endurance all go down as you age, and I wanted to design something which would help athletes like me compensate for the decline in reflex response time,” he said. The craze is already starting to take off in the UK. Frame, one of the UK’s

biggest workout chains has said that it has witnessed a major surge in the amount of clients it has attracted in the past 3 years, and that the majority of frequent gym users today are looking for high intensity workouts which promise to deliver major calorie burn and adrenaline rushes. For instance, Frame has reported that its “Power Hour” class is one of its biggest sellers with participants promised to burn off more than 800 calories in 60 minutes. An even more strenuous workout, the Sweat 1000, could also be threatening to burst onto Irish shores. In short, this workout guarantees that you can burn up to 1000 calories an hour by alternating short but intense treadmill intervals with total body workouts. Originally a specialized weight endurance training for athletes, it’s aimed at those who are looking for boot camp or personal trainer results in half the time.

Sinn Féin welcomes Homeless World Cup team to Leinster House SINN Féin spokesperson on Arts, Sports and Tourism Sandra McLellan TD welcomed the Irish Homeless World Cup team to Leinster House. The team finished 16 of 48 teams at the World Cup in Mexico this month. At a reception in the private dining room in Leinster House Deputy McLellan welcomed the team and made a presentation to goalkeeper David Byrne who was voted Goalkeeper of the tournament in Mexico this month. Speaking at the reception this evening Deputy McLellan said: “On behalf of Sinn Fein, our Housing

spokesperson Deputy Dessie Ellis and myself it’s a great pleasure to welcome Ireland’ Homeless World Cup Soccer team, their mentors and friends to Leinster House. “Today is about honouring the players who represented Ireland in the World Cup in Mexico namely; David Byrne, Ollie Carroll, Ian Gannon, Paul Fitzsimons, Michael Nevin, Keith Hogan, Wayne Reid, and Garreth Lynch. “During the tournament the Irish team played teams from Brazil, Ukraine, Poland, Argentina, Portugal, Norway, South Africa, and Scotland. “The Big Issue league now has tourna-

ments in towns and cities across the country. In total over 500 young people compete in street leagues. The leagues culminate with an All-Ireland final that brings teams from North and South to participate in a one day event.

Out of this tournament the current group of players were selected to represent Ireland. “Particular congratulations must go to David Byrne in recognition of his personal achievement in being voted goalkeeper of the tournament.”

A surfer fought off a shark by punching it on the side of the head Written by Pieter Mens 25 year old Scott Stephens was left with eight deep lacerations after been attacked by the shark at Eureka, California The surfer was paddling on his board 150 yards further out than other surfers when the shark grabbed him and pulled him under water. “The shark came from underneath me, grabbed onto my side, shook me a few times and pulled me under water,” he told reporters from his hospital bed. “I

opened my eyes under water and punched the shark on the side of the head a couple of times until it released me. I saw a lot of blood.” Luckily he was able to get back on his board and return to shore before the shark which he believes was a 4ft juvenile great white could strike again Fellow surfers came to his aid when they heard him screaming for help and took him to St Joseph Hospital. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny T.D. launches €2 million IPB Gathering Ireland Fund AN Taoiseach Enda Kenny has announced a €2million IPB Gathering Ireland Fund at Government Buildings. The fund, a 50:50 partnership between IPB Insurance and The Gathering Ireland 2013 is in response to the rapidly growing number of gatherings being planned across the country for 2013. The fund will be administered by local authorities across the State to support events and gatherings that have the capacity to attract overseas visitors. Speaking at the launch the Taoiseach said “The core objective of The Gathering Ireland 2013 is to deliver an additional 325,000 tourists to Ireland in 2013 and this generous fund by IPB Insurance and the further provision of funds by the Government is a reflection of the importance of The Gathering as a key Government project that will directly contribute to the economic revival of our country.” IPB Insurance has allocated €1 million of the fund to support local flagship events and activities in every city and county. The fund will be distributed across city and

county councils and will range from €25,000 and €60,000 to support up to three flagship events in each council area subject to approval based on application criteria. In parallel, The Gathering Ireland 2013 has allocated a further €1 million to the fund to target other local and community events in each county. Grant amounts from €500- €2,500 will be made available to these events following approval through a short application process. Ronan Foley, CEO of IPB Insurance said: “As a 100% Irish owned mutual insurer whose remit it is to protect the interests of our local authority members and their communities we are absolutely convinced by the economic rationale and business opportunity afforded by the Gathering Ireland 2013 initiative. The Gathering Ireland 2013 will I believe, bring new momentum to the development of the global Irish network and deliver not only short term benefits next year but longer term rewards as relationships develop. Corporate Ireland must step forward and assume a leadership position and must do more for our country and our

communities by contributing to the future of Irish society in which we all have a stake.” The target for the combined fund will be to support 700 or more individual Gathering Ireland events. Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar said: “There has been huge interest in organising Gatherings around the country. To date, between 6,000 and 7,000 people have attended more than 50 meetings in every single county, at which all sorts of Gathering ideas were proposed. Thanks to IPB, for the first time funding will now be available for certain local and community Gatherings. Even if you don’t qualify for funding, I would still urge everyone to get involved, and get organising. Everyone can still organise a Gathering of their own, even if it’s something as simple as inviting one or more people to visit Ireland next year.” The Gathering Ireland 2013 is Ireland’s biggest ever tourism initiative, providing an opportunity for those with ancestral links or an affinity to Ireland to play a part in and benefit from our economic recovery.

surfboard probably took some of the brunt of the bite, possibly keeping the shark’s teeth from penetrating organs that would have made surgery riskier and more complicated. Despite the traumatic experience, Mr Stephens said it will not keep him out of the water. “I will be very scared, I’m sure,” he said. “I’ll definitely have some mental barriers to get through. I think it’ll be worth it.”

BizBlitz Movie Reviews

Written by Jessica Sloan

Stay in the loop with whats hot in entertainment, whether its the latest cinema releases, DVD or Blu Ray, or TV shows, we have you covered.

Cinema Releases The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey(2012) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is part one of the prequel trilogy to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Hobbit film series is directed, co-written and produced by Peter Jackson, and are based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel of the same name. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey follows Bilbo Baggins on a hazardous journey with Gandalf the Grey to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Ian McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf, along with Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug. In cinemas on the 14th of December.

The Sapphires(2012)

DVD & BLU RAY

The Sapphires is an Australian comedy drama which is based on a true story. The film is about four Australian Aboriginal women who are discovered by an Irish talent scout played by the hillarious Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, Moone Boy, The IT Crowd), who then form a music group called The Sapphires. The Sapphires then go on to entertain troops during the Vietnam War. The Sapphires is in cinemas on the 7th of November.

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Argo(2012)

Snow White and the Huntsman is based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale “Snow White” and stars Kristen Stewart (Snow White), Chris Hemsworth (The Huntsman) and Charlize Theron (The Evil Queen, Raveena). When the Evil Queen, Raveena discovers that her beautiful and kind stepdaughter Snow White is now the fairest of the land, and will soon become ruler of the kingdom, she sends the troubled Huntsman to kill Snow White. But he becomes Snow White’s protector, and what follows is a good old fashioned tale of good versus evil. As Snow White fights to return the kingdom to its former glory, as Raveena has destroyed the once beautiful kingdom, and created a dark and evil kingdom in its place.

Argo is an American thriller directed by Ben Affleck, who also stars in the film alongside Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), and John Goodman (Roseanne), George Clooney also co-produced the film with Grant Heslov. Argo is based loosely on a former C.I.A agent’s account of the rescue of six U.S diplomats from Iran during the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis. Argo is in cinemas on the 7th of November.

Snow White also enlists the help of the dwarves (who she meets along her travels with the Huntsman). The dwarves add a warmth and charm to the film, and Bob Hoskins is excellent as Muir, the blind elder Dwarf. And there’s even an Irish dwarf played by Brian Gleeson thrown in for good measure! The visuals in the Fairy Sanctuary are captivating, creating a magical place that you will gaze at in awe of its beauty. The special effects used on the dwarves are also exceptionally good. Charlize Theron is excellent as the Evil Queen Raveena, and Kristen Stewart conveys the vulnerability of the Snow White character perfectly.

Love/Hate Season 3

Snow White and the Huntsman is an epic fantasy action adventure film, which is bound to keep you entertained during these cold Winter nights. It is a very enjoyable film, and is an extremely well made blockbuster.

Racism still looming large in Football R-a Racism! Your Off!

cism

Written by John Bodkin FOOTBALL is no stranger to racism, and even in the 21st century, players, officials and fans globally are still subjected to abuse regarding their nationality, skin colour religion or ethnicity. Campaigns and networks such as ‘Kick It Out and ‘Football Against Racism in Europe’ established in 1993 and in 1999 respectively have been backed by many high profile figures in the sport such as Sir Alex Ferguson, and whilst these measures have progressed the issue, events which have conspired over the past few weeks have propelled the issue of racism in football into a major talking point once again. After the Football Association’s (FA) decision to hand John Terry a mere four-match suspension following his racial abuse over Anton Ferdinand, several high profile black footballers were outraged by the lenient punishment. Several of these players,

including Anton’s brother Rio Ferdinand decided against wearing a ‘Kick It Out’ t-shirt in support of the campaign against racism as a show of frustration against the progress of the campaign. During Manchester United’s 4-2 victory over Stoke City on the 20th of October, in which Rio Ferdinand had refused to wear the ‘Kick it Out’ tshirt, United’s manager Ferguson described Ferdinand’s decision as “embarrassing for me” and commenting that “he’ll be dealt with”. The Professional Footballers Association (PFA) was quick to defend the decision of Ferdinand and other player’s decisions to not wear the t-shirt, citing the right of freedom of expression. Clarke Carlisle of PFA has said: “Sir Alex Ferguson is continual in his unwavering support for the Kick It Out campaign which is commendable and what we all want

to see, but you can’t vilify or coerce any individual for making a stand,” “Everyone has a right to free speech – just like you can’t coerce anyone into shaking hands, you can’t make somebody wear a T-shirt – although I do personally believe that joining in with the campaign is the best way forward,” he said. T-shirts have become somewhat symbolic in the Premier League of late. Last season, Liverpool showed their support for Luis Suárez after he received an eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrick Evra by wearing t-shirt which depicted the striker’s face on them. At the end of October, Chelsea filed a formal complaint to the FA in regards to referee Mark Clattenburg, who they accuse of racially abusing two of their players using inappropriate language during their 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United.

800 jobs and 400 construction jobs to be created by Kerry Group Kerry Group has announced the establishment of an industryleading global technology and innovation centre in Ireland. The €100m investment, which will create 800 jobs, as well as 400 immediate construction jobs, will be part-funded by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland. The new flagship global technology and customer innovation centre will serve as a key focal point for Kerry’s customer engagement activities providing strategic customers with access to the Group’s complete breadth and depth of technologies, scientific research, innovation and applications expertise across food, beverage and pharmaceutical markets. Welcoming the announcement, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mr Richard Bruton TD said: “As I have said before, central to the Government’s plans for jobs and growth is creating a powerful engine of indigenous enterprise. We must not only continue to deepen and develop the impact of the very important multinational sector, but also crucially support Irish companies who are seeking to expand their presence in export markets and become world-leaders in their field. I commend Enterprise Ireland on their excellent work on this project.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD said: “Today is a phenomenal announcement and is perhaps the most significant investment ever in the Irish Agri Food industry. Not only is this an announcement of 800 high end jobs, but it is the proof that the agri food sector can be central to rebuilding the Irish economy. Kerry Group are Ireland’s largest Agri food and food innovation company. They employ 24,000 people around the world. This investment is a statement of confidence in the Irish economy and in the quality of Irish food science graduates to deliver food innovation in the most modern facility of its type on the planet. The agri food and food innovation sector will continue to provide positivity and optimism in the Irish economy. The leadership that Kerry have shown with this project is testament to their commitment to this country” CEO of Enterprise Ireland Frank Ryan added: “Food is Ireland’s number one export sector and critically important to our economy and to export-led growth. This centre will be one of the world’s most advanced food innovation facilities. It will underpin Ireland’s world-wide reputation in food innovation and secure our standing as a world leader in the food industry.

NEARLY 40 per cent of Irish drivers admit to shouting or

getting angry behind the wheel on a weekly basis – with a very angry 11.5 per cent admitting to daily bouts of road rage. These worrying statistics are the findings of a recent study carried out among Irish drivers, which also revealed around 13 per cent of motorists have got out of their car to confront another driver. The Continental Tyres report also found that nearly one in three road users ‘expect’ to experience aggressive or intimidating driving whilst out in the car. Paddy Murphy of Continental Tyres Ireland said: “The road rage figures revealed in our survey are shocking. Of paramount importance is road safety but if motorists feel intimidated or angry they will lack concentration, increasing the danger for other road users, never mind not enjoying the driving experience.”

Central bank requests firms to review PPI sales and the contact all their customers THE Central Bank of Ireland has issued an update on its on-going investigation into the sale of PPI policies. At the request of the Central Bank the following firms (Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Banks, EBS, GE Money, Ulster Bank and Permanenttsb) have commenced reviews of their PPI sales since August 2007. During September the Central Bank extended its investigation to look at PPI sales by other banks and credit institutions. Enforcement actions are also being considered. At this point we are naming the firms which, at our request, have begun their reviews and who will be communicating with their customers over the coming weeks to outline the approach they will be taking and the expected timelines for completion of their reviews.

We will update consumers as developments arise in relation to other firms. The Central Bank is aware that a significant number of PPI related complaints and enquiries are being referred to firms by claims management companies on behalf of consumers. It is important for consumers to know that such companies charge fees and that the costs to the consumer can be significant. Complaints regarding the sale of PPI since August 2007 will be investigated by the firms listed as part of their reviews. All other PPI complaints must be dealt with in compliance with the 2012 Consumer Protection Code, including those relating to sales prior to August 2007.

Road Rage on the Increase on Ireland’s Roads 40 per cent of drivers shout or get angry on weekly basis 13 percent of drivers have confronted other drivers

“We are urging drivers to consider using more courtesy while driving, not only to improve safety and the driving experience but also because showing consideration to others on the roads actually eases congestion and reduces delays.” It also emerged that when on the receiving end of road rage 40 per cent feel angry, 21 per cent feel shaken and nearly one in five (18.9 per cent) feel like retaliating. Dr Mark Sullman, expert in driver behaviour at Cranfield University said: “When driving, we are prevented from using the normal cues to work out people’s intentions, such as facial expression and body language, so we are more likely to misunderstand their behaviour and interpret it in a negative way. “For instance if you bump into someone on foot, a quick smile or ‘oops’ is all that is needed to show it was accidental. However, when in the car, with the absence of these cues, people are much more likely to react in an aggressive manner than in other ‘public’ situations.”

Dr Sullman advises: “You can choose not to let it rile you and instead deal with the situation in a positive way, such as concentrating on driving safely yourself or realising that everyone makes mistakes.” Paddy Murphy added: “Avoiding the stop-start of harsh braking and acceleration associated with aggressive driving saves energy and improves the flow of traffic, reducing journey times which in turn should make motorists happier.” Getting a blast of the horn from another driver is the most common form of aggression, followed by offensive hand gestures and being ‘tailgated’. As to the road users who annoy drivers the most, learners topped the list (52.7 per cent), followed by older or slower drivers (45.5 percent) and boy racers (43.6 per cent).

The exciting new Ford Focus ST has arrived in Ireland. The car builds on Ford’s long heritage of performance models and carries the DNA of the company’s renowned previous ST and RS cars. This latest Focus ST is Ford’s first truly global performance car and has been jointly developed by Ford’s RS team in Europe and the Special Vehicles Team (SVT) in the US. Ensuring the high level of driving dynamics that enthusiasts have come to expect from a

Ford performance model, the new Focus ST is powered by a specially developed direct-injection 2.0 litre, all alloy, turbocharged, four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with a 250PS output. And yet, the car remains capable of returning a fuel efficiency performance of 7.2L/100Km and CO2 emissions of 169g/km – 20 percent better than its predecessor. Standard specification in the new Focus ST includes Ford Power keyless start, sporty Recaro seats, Bluetooth and 18” alloy wheels Focus ST2 features

Ford’s acclaimed SYNC system as standard. SYNC is an advanced voice control, device integration and connectivity interface. It enables users to connect mobile phones and music players by Bluetooth or USB, make hands-free telephone calls, and control music and other functions using voice commands. The Focus ST has a starring role in the new all-action movie adaptation of the classic 70’s British police series, The Sweeney, with actors Ray Winstone and “Plan B” Ben Drew playing Regan and Carter.

Exclusive: Warfighter, might just achieve the Medal Of Honour it may well deserve Medal of Honor Warfighter: The Most Authentic Military Shooter This Year Step into the boots of the most elite

Tier 1 Operators to hunt down terror. The awardwinning Medal of Honor franchise has sold over 50M copies in its illustrious history, with Medal of Honor Warfighter set to deliver this year’s only true modern military shooter experience. Introducing 12 Tier 1 units from 10 different nations including the Polish GROM, German KSK, Canadian JTF-2 and U.S. Navy SEAL, Medal of Honor Warfighter will deliver one of the premier multiplayer experiences of the year. Powered by the advanced technology of the Frostbite™ 2 game engine, IGN.com says the game “looks and feels far better than its predecessor.” The Medal of Honor Warfighter innovative multiplayer design allows players to represent their nation as gamers go head-to-head pitting the best-of-the-best soldiers from around the world in online competition. The game also introduces a new multiplayer co-operative feature called Fireteams, which gives players a competitive advantage and rewards them for team-

ing up with a friend on the battlefield. Players will be able to represent their global warfighters and experience Fireteams in eight real-world maps including Sarajevo Stadium in Bosnia and five unique modes like the nerve-rattling “Hotspot” and fast-paced “Home Run” Sport mode. Written by actual U.S. Tier 1 Operators while deployed overseas, Medal of Honor Warfighter features a dotted line to real world events and provides players a view into globally recognised threats and situations letting them experience the action as it might have unfolded. From rescuing hostages in Abu Sayyaf’s stronghold in Basilan, Philippines to assaulting Al-Shabaab’s “Pirate Town” on the Somali Coast, the single player campaign allows players to step behind the iron sights of Tier 1 Operators as they hunt down a terrorist mastermind and the global threat of the distribution of a deadly explosive chemical called PETN. Medal of Honor Warfighter is available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the PC.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the ground-breaking film E.T. The ExtraTerrestrial, users can now experience their own interactive journey as E.T. returns home to The Green Planet.

Need for Speed Most Wanted The Most Socially-Connected Game of This Generation MAKE trouble for the cops, for your friends or just for fun! Need for Speed Most Wanted, is now available at retail stores. After shattering franchise records with a total of 43 award nominations and winning the prestigious Best Racing Game award at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), from the E3 Game Critics, Need for Speed Most Wanted is poised for global success. In Spain, Official PlayStation Magazine awarded Most Wanted with a 9.4/10 and called it, “the best online multiplayer experience ever.” Game Informer, in North America, gave Most Wanted a 9/10 and described the action as an “exhilarating experience.” Edge Magazine, in the UK, also awarded Most Wanted a 9/10 and credited the game for setting a “new standard in open world driving games.” Need for Speed Most Wanted puts social competition at the heart of the experience, and lets players compete to become the Most Wanted amongst people they care about the most - their friends. Need for Speed Most Wanted is powered by Autolog 2, an innovative online technology that automatically tracks and compares everything players do in the game against their friends, from earning Speed Points to achieving

best race times and more. Need for Speed Most Wanted has been declared, “the ultimate social game” by IGN, engaging friends unlike ever before, and allowing players to leave their mark in the open world across their social network. Winning never felt so good. “With our years of experience creating critically acclaimed blockbuster hits, Need for Speed Most Wanted is Criterion’s vision to shake up the series and breathe new life into the genre,” said Matt Webster, Executive Producer, Criterion Games. “We’re throwing years of convention out the window and creating an open world game with an open structure that lets players drive whatever car they want, how they want, without consequences. We’ve built an experience full of variety that enables freedom and choice for the player to play the game the way they choose. Take down friends in a race to the finish, explore the city to find new cars, flash past speed cameras, jump through billboards or take on an Autolog Recommendation. Not only do players have complete freedom, they’re rewarded for everything they do. With friends so naturally embedded into the heart of the experience, Need for Speed Most Wanted

is the most socially-connected game of this generation.” Developed by award-winning studio, Criterion Games, Need for Speed Most Wanted features a seamless, nonstop multiplayer experience, with no menus and no lobbies - just competition. Gamers are thrust into a continuous playlist of different events with persistent scoring and endless rewards. Players must fight for position on the start line, or turn around to take out oncoming rivals at the finish. Furthermore, with the all-new CloudCompete technology, players can extend the game beyond the console with a cloud-based scoring system that tracks Speed Points and game accomplishments across multiple platforms through http://www.needforspeed.com. For the first time, players can rack up points on the couch while playing multiplayer on the console and then top off their Speed Points while on the go on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android or PlayStation® Vita. Now available for the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system with Kinect support, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, PC, PlayStation Vita, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Android..

Music Written by Graham Lewis

The Killers: Battle Born The Killers fourth studio album takes its name, from a phase on the state flag of Nevada, where the band are from. It fits the album perfectly as this album stands for everything that the killers are, which is heavily styled synth /rock sounds under Brandon Flowers booming voice. The album itself flows, like a band that is running on dry, bar the single “Runaway” there is no real

hits and the band seems to have no direction where to go next. The only highlights are “Runaway” which lyrically could have been written by Bruce Springsteen. “A matter of time” which sounds like it could have been a Meatloaf song in the late 80s early 90s (not that that’s a bad thing) though it will make a great live song and the last track “Battle born”.

Mumford & Sons: Babel

Cathal Flaherty: Lost & Found

Irish Singer/Songwriter Cathal Flaherty has been going from strength to strength over the last few years. He has played support to artists such as Bressie, Jamie Lawson, The Walls, Jack L, Bonnie Tyler, Brian Kennedy and Francis Black. It seems now is his time to shine with his debut EP ‘Lost & Found’. Cathal Flaherty voice sounds like across between Jack L and

Declan O’ Rourke. His writing style is one from the heart, straight and to the point, there is no double meaning in his songs. A stand out track is “where to hide “which has a great anthemic chorus that will have you singing alone before the end of your first play and will stick in your head for the next few hours.

Before pressing play on this album, you know Mumford & Sons are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. In the sense that if the album sounds different from “Sigh No More” they run the risk of losing the fans they have and if they don’t change, people may say they only have one kind of sound. I am one listener who is glad they did not change too much. Keeping their new folk/pop sound, while injecting a country sound and tempo into songs like “I will wait “ you get a feeling

of where the band is going. Then you have the striped back sound that runs through most of ‘Lover’s Eyes’ a song that would make Damien Rice proud. The Highlights of the album have to be “Broken Crown” which is the soundtrack to the best scene in a western movie, that is yet to be written and the song “Below my feet” which can only be described as beautiful. This album may not have songs that you will hear at your local nightclub, but I do warn you get ready to sing your heart out to it, at house parties for the next year or so.
