fighting a different battle

A good relation amongst government and stake holders as SANCA has seen youth months being celebrated in a phenomenon manner. With drugs and alcohol abuse as the national theme for the 2013 youth month celebration, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality under the Daveyton social development have part taken in the

celebrations. When drug and alcohol abuse has found its way to the youth, SANCA finds that young people at the age of 10 are now users. The cause, mainly being that of domestic reasons. The abuse which comes from the home is notably a common factor, as the child seeks to feel the void brought from the abuse, drugs and alcohol wangles their way into their lives. Peer pressure, which is also iden-

tified as the other factor also comes to play, these mainly is caused by an identity crisis where one has the urge of wanting to fit into a particular group. Daveyton Social development and SANCA have identified Dagga, Nyaope and Alcohol as the common drugs used by the youth. On the point of how parents can identify if their child is using either of the mentioned, issues as the following can

be spotted, drop in hygiene, academic performance drops, aggressiveness and change in friends, loss of extra mural activities as soccer, loss of personal staff and money in the house. The marriage between the Daveyton social development and SANCA has yielded fruitful rewards. The two parts take in matters as life skills programmes, which are targeted to the youth at high schools and school leav-

People are being killed on the streets of Daveyton. Do you feel safe? What can we do to make our streets safe again?

Eric Mahlangu I for one propose neighbourhood watch that’s the only solution to all these problems.

Nompumelelo Tshabalala I also think neighbourhood watch would be a good idea. I wonder what happened to reservists who patrolled on the streets around Etwatwa and Daveyton.

As research is the integral part of Etuka mandate, late last year and early this year a research was conducted at Daveyton and Etwatwa and it was found that the majority in the community are trapped in the circles of crime, poverty and unemployment especially the youth. “We also established that others depend only on government social grants for survival,” said Percy the founder of Etuka Legal Resources and Development Centre. He also mentioned that other causes of poverty and unemployment is lack of equal distribution of resources, lack of skills/ education, crime and ill health like HIV/AIDS. Percy said their mission is to

develop communities which are empowered, self reliant and taking charge of their own destiny. It was not long ago when the Etuka Legal Resources Centre conducted workshops and Youth Imbizo in different areas of Daveyton and Etwatwa. The focus at Barcelona Norah’s Crèche on the 29th of May 2013 was primarily to teach people about their constitutional rights and responsibilities and also how to overcome the barriers of poverty and unemployment. The people who attended were also taught to establish cooperatives and making land their friend. Since June is youth month, Etuka Legal

Resources also held on the 14th of June 2013, a Youth Development workshop at Mokoka Library. The message that came across was that of self-reliance, combating of crime, fighting the curse of poverty and how drugs can destroy their lives. The youth were advice to establish cooperatives to combat unemployment and poverty. The event was graced by Patric Shai who plays Tiger on Zone 14 and a ambassador of Brother of Life. He preached the message of self-reliance. He emphasised to the youth to stop complaining and to take charge in their lives and shape their destiny. He also spoke against the abuse of women and chil-

University on the cards for Ekurhuleni

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele says there is an urgent need for the development of a business case to establish a University of Technology in the area. Closing the three-day Ekurhuleni Job Summit and Career Expo held in Alberton, Gungubele said “cries for such an institution were crystal clear during the discussions” as the city zoomed into the issue of youth unemployment and poverty alleviation in the city. “The people spoke passionately about such an institution. Ours now is to make sure that we put a business case together and present it to the relevant structures,” he pointed out, adding that it is rather unfortunate that Ekurhuleni with so many factories and

industries did not have such an institution. “Such a university would also make our jobs easier in terms of producing skilled youngsters who can respond to the needs of the businesses that exist in our space. We have just turned our focus to digitizing the city and becoming Africa’s first Aerotropolis, so we must be prepared to serve existing companies and those that will be attracted by our new economic path with the necessary skills to business in our city,” Gungubele explained. The long queues forming each day from the uncomfortable hours of the past two cold mornings, was enough to convince me that we have a lot of work to do to improve the lives of our people.

Thousands of young adults flocked to the South Western point of Ekurhuleni, armed with only a CV in hand and hopeful hearts of opening the doors to a better future, Gungubele pointed out. This event attracted close to 12 000 people when the city had actually anticipated a turnout of about 5 000. “What made the situation so sad for me was the fact that in some instances elderly people would wake up and come and queue on behalf of their children who would have started by looking for jobs elsewhere before heading for the summit,” said the mayor, adding that the Job Summit and Career Expo, has given hope to many people and ‘we cannot afford to fail them’. “All the youngsters who came here clearly demonstrated the will to work at some stage of their lives and/ or start businesses, and we, as government and the private sector can assist them realize their dreams. “The desperation that has been shown by our young graduates poses a new challenge for this metro. This situation says we must continue to put our heads together to see how best we can absorb these young people. We need to do more and more each year until such time that we can sit back and say we did our part.” He said the city has prioritized human development and job creation, and vehicles that have been identified to take this process forward include the city’s 10 priority projects which

include the introduction of the integrated public transport network, Aerotropolis, Digital City, Urban Renewal and Township Economies. We also have the EPWP that we intend to leverage and streamline as a safety net and income generation intervention, he continued. He then announced that since June last year: 7 436 work opportunities were created through EMM’s Capex and Opex spending, wherein 3 130 work opportunities were for the youth. The metro also implemented the second phase of the Contractor Development Programme wherein 20 Learner Contractors (50% Women:

50% Man) are implementing projects worth R47 million. EMM’s Waste Management Services Department has appointed 149 young people as part of the youth work readiness programme. EMPD is implementing a pilot project for 100 youth who are being trained as Peace Corps, and shall be graduating on Friday. Disaster and Emergency Management Services is implementing a Fire Brigade Reserve Force programme for 200 youth. The Metro in partnership has developed Ekurhuleni Business Support Centre in Kempton Park wherein SEDA and ABSA will co-locate in order to provide enterprise development support to youth owned businesses. Gungubele then committed the city to among others, worth with Gauteng Provincial Government to implement the National Youth Accord, continue to develop

Vutha News 5 the Aerotropolis as a new tertiary economic sector, leverage the Transnet’ Academy development programme for the benefit of local youth and partner with the Department of Public Enterprises in implementing the planned Aviation Skills Development programme. He further pronounced that the city will formalize partnerships to leverage the National Artisan Support Centre, the National Tooling Initiative and other related programmes. “Come this time next year, I will be reporting back to the community the progress we have made flowing from resolutions and commitments we have made at this summit,” Gungubele concluded.

Community urged to fight against Satanism

In a propose to fight alleged Satanism that has overwhelmed Etwatwa in Daveyton and surrounding areas of Ekurhuleni, the Speaker of Ekurhuleni Patricia Kumalo, held a cleansing ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony which saw at least over 450 community members present in Etwatwa on Thursday, Kumalo said they could not believe it when they heard through the media that there was a 14-year-old boy who

allegedly killed three family members with an axe weeks ago. She said the alleged Satanism has been in the area for a while and it was about time they fight it. “We left the family to mourn and now it’s time to call upon God for prayer because it’s not only the family that has been affected, but the whole community.”It cannot be and it cannot happen that people die in a rue some way and we say it’s a belief,” said

Kumalo. Chairperson of Ekurhuleni religious forum, Pastor Zibonele Mkhwanazi said they will fight the demon around the area. He urged the community to hold hands and fight Satanism, saying: “This is the battle that as the community we should work together and believe in God that we will win the battle. Satanism is here and we need the presence of God,” said Mkhwanazi.

Mayor’s message to Ekurhuleni residents on Madiba’s condition The past few days have been very testing for us as the City of Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa and the rest of the world. We have been going about doing our business with heavy hearts knowing that our icon of the liberation struggle and former president Nelson Mandela is once again in hospital. I must say that it is never a nice feeling when an elderly person goes

to hospital because they are naturally vulnerable due to old age among others. The elderly statesman is an icon who did a lot for us while serving 27 years of his life in prison fighting for our liberation, and continued to shape South Africa’s future for the better beyond his release from prison in 1990. It is only a man with courage and a selfless leader like

Mandela who puts the interests of those in need and oppressed ahead of his own and those of his family. It such a hero that can fight for an environment where both the oppressor and the oppressed can live together in peace and harmony to address the imbalances of the past. Who can forget his reconciliatory role that led to the peaceful dawn of the New South Af-

rica when most detractors had thought that there would be bloodshed in the country at the time? Let me join other political leaders, the clergy and the general communities of the world in wishing Tata a speedy recovery. South Africa and the rest of the world continue to need such icons, who by the mere mention of their names, you are inspired to bring about positive change

in your own community. I am confident and reassured by the Presidency that our hero will bounce back from this set back. I therefore reiterate the call to the rest of the people of Ekurhuleni to keep praying for Madiba. I know a lot of you have already started, but we cannot afford to stop until we hear the news that Madiba has been discharged from the Pretoria Medi-Clinic

Heart Hospital. This is a time when we as a country must pull together and forget about our differences and other personal agendas, and remember that it is through the efforts of people like Mandela that we now have a democratic, nonracial and non-sexist South Africa. Get well soon Tata. We as the people of Ekurhuleni shall continue praying for you.

As temperatures begin to drop, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has warned its consumers of possible load shedding due to the increased demand on the electricity network. Ekurhuleni Metro’s spokesperson, Sam Modiba confirms that the municipality has published a load shedding schedule on its website which consumers can print out to see how they will be affected

in the event power supply has to be shed. “We are advising consumers to use electricity wisely by taking practical steps like switching geysers off during peak hours, switching off lights in rooms that are not occupied, using gas heaters instead of electric ones etc,” explains Modiba. Load shedding happens when there is insufficient power station capacity to supply the demand (load) from all the

customers; the electricity system could become unstable, possibly resulting in a national black-out. To avoid this, Eskom can either increase supply or reduce demand. To increase supply, Eskom will run its power stations at maximum available capacity. In addition to the coal and nuclear plant, hydro and open cycle gas turbine stations are used at peak times when the

demand is high. To reduce demand, Eskom will first call on customer contracts that allow for supply to be reduced or interrupted for specific periods and durations. If this is not enough, Eskom is forced to cut supply to all other customers. This could be done through either scheduled or emergency load shedding. “During scheduled load shedding parts of the network

are switched off according to a predetermined schedule, with the impact spread equitably over the customer base. Shedding is predictable and allows for customers to plan accordingly,” Modiba points out. Modiba cautions that in exceptional circumstances additional emergency load shedding could be required. Control centres will shed load using emergency switching in order to protect the network.

This will be less predictable and all customers can expect to be affected at any time from no onwards till the winter season passes. Consumers are advised to treat all network points as being electrically alive in the event of load shedding. Please find the attached load shedding schedule and the link http://www.ekurhuleni.gov. za/business/useful-resources/ load-shedding.

Banyana Banyana battle to a 1-1 draw with rivals Zimbabwe

South Africa senior women’s team, Banyana Banyana played to a 1-1 draw against arch rivals Zimbabwe in a fiercely contested international friendly match at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Both Banyana Banyana and Zimbabwe went into this game on the back of victories over Mozambique and Zambia respectively. While those victories might have been achieved without breaking much sweat, this Daveyton encounter, though just a friendly, was played in a competitive spirit. It was end to end stuff and Banyana dominated from the early stages and were unfortunate not to have taken the lead when a Noko Matlou goal was ruled out for offside. It was to prove a poetic justice as Zimbabwe had their own ‘goal’ late in the second half also ruled out on questionable circumstances. As the match progressed in the first half, Zimbabwe were always looking threatening on counter attacks and their strikers were a handful for the somehow lethargic Banyana Banyana defence.

The Daveyton crowd did not disappoint as they came in numbers and cheered Banyana Banyana from the first minute to the last. But Zimbabwe were full value for the draw. In fact, the visitors gave Banyana a few things to mull over as the two COSAFA powerhouses slugged it out from end to end. In the opening minutes, Zimbabwe was awarded an early free-kick just outside the box but there was no danger for Banyana Banyana as the effort was fired wide. That was perhaps the first warning shot and Banyana Banyana knew they had to be solid at the back if they were to come out of this one with something. Then came the first controversial decision of the afternoon. Joseph Mkhonza’s charges had the ball in the back of the net on the 10th minute through Noko Matlou’s header but the effort was controversially ruled offside. Television replays however, showed the Limpopo based striker was very much onside when she received the ball.

Amanda Dlamini also had an opportunity on the 13th minute but her attempted lob was cleared off the line by the industrious Zimbabwean defence. Quick thinking by goalkeeper Silindile Dlamini on 19 minutes foiled a Zimbabwean attack as she quickly came off her line to thwart the attempt. There were some injury concerns for Banyana after 20 minutes; first when Captain Janine van Wyk temporarily left with a knock to her left foot, then goalkeeper Silindile had to receive some medical attention also with what appeared to be a knock to her left foot. However, the medical team did a good job and the players were back on the field. Zimbabwe took the lead five minutes from the break with a glancing Rudo Neshamba header. The attack started on the left with a long ball played in and the Banyana defence could not clear, allowing Rudo the opportunity to score. Zimbabwe almost increased the score a few minutes into the second half but the ferocious attempt cannoned off the crossbar with Banyana Banyana goalkeeper on sixes and sevens.

Banyana Banyana responded on 53 minutes from the freekick, way outside the box but the attempt yielded nothing. Van Wyk then fired in a long volley with the Zimbabwe keeper at sea before the visitors defence cleared the ball to safety. The equaliser finally came after some really hard work. Amanda Dlamini collected a ball played in by Vilakazi to put Banyana level with her 19th goal for the national team. Siwe Nongonya was brought in for Silindile Ngubane on 59 minutes as Banyana went i n

search of the winner. Neshamba proved to be a real nuisance for Banyana Banyana each time she was in possession of the ball and almost increased the lead on 66 minutes but Van Wyk did well to pressure her with her shot going above the goal. The first yellow card of the match was handed to Melody Musasa on 68 minutes for a nasty tackle on Amanda Dlamini. Banyana Banyana should have increased the lead on 70 minutes following some really exciting build up but the effort

went just wide. Then again on 73 minutes there was another opportunity but the Zimbabwe keeper did well to palm the ball away. Then Banyana keeper was quick off her line on 75 minutes to deny Zimbabwe what appeared a clearcut scoring opportunity. There were some edgy moments for the local fans on 79 minutes as the Banyana keeper battled to deal with a low ball but the assistant referee pointed to some infringement and the score remained 1-1.
