The new collection by Sylvio Giardina draws its inspiration from the density of this emotional and narrative context and from the proportions unique to the style codes of the 40’s and 50’s fashion. Entirely played on the harmonious fusion of iconic and artful classic references and of edgy and subtly provocative formal solutions, the new pieces combine classic and sartorial textiles such as tweed and gabardine. For example, skirts, although demurely elongated to the calf, cling to the body, strongly enhancing the fluidity of the sinuous line, typical of the gap, purely feminine, between waist and hips. henever I think of Italy I cannot help but to think of great footwear. Stereotyping? I know. I stumbled upon Stefano Parrella on Twitter in 2011. Back then; he was planning his first collection for his brand ÆLYT. Watching him closely posting his sketches and prototypes online I completely fell in love with them, not to forget how sweet and inviting his personality is. Now, two years later, his dream of creating a big name in shoe designing has come true in steady stylish steps. I asked him a few questions to introduce him properly to our readers.
Talk to me about your Spring 2013 shoe collection? ÆLYT’s Spring2013 collection is all about customizable shoes. You’ll find classic pumps, peep toes and hot high-heeled sandals, so sexy! All of our shoes are made of genuine leather in top craftsmanship, absolutely the best materials for luxury fashion shoes. What inspired you to start ÆLYT? I have been trying to make my dreams come true; and now that I’m creating shoes with my brand, clients’ satisfaction is all I seek by meeting their demands with high quality designs customized by them. Being successful is all I hope for in the fashion industry. Out of shoe designers, who is your idol? I wouldn’t say that I have an idol, however, I admire Dolce&Gabbana and Alessandro Dell’Acqua (N°21) so much, and also young Italian designers like Andrea Silla, Flavia De Masi, Giovanni Panettieri, and many more. I know it must be amazing designing for Stefano Gabbana! But I never asked you how you felt about it. Now, how did it feel? At the beginning of that fashion project, I designed a special pair of my first sneakers for Stefano Gabbana, and named it the “special edition”, because each customer can customize their own special version of it. It was not only a gift from me to him, but also an act of gratitude, which he liked so much by showing interest in ÆLYT. Selling my shoes at Spiga2, which is a multi brand store from Dolce&Gabbana, is one of my goals, its not easy, I worked and I’m still working so hard for it. Is there anyone else you would like to see wearing your shoes? I would like to get so many pictures from ÆLYT’s customers from all over the world; that is enough for me, it would be very satisfying. What makes a pair of shoes “Perfect”? It is what makes people feel good; it is the result of high quality and style, with clients’ own unique tastes. What makes ÆLYT special? Our high quality materials, and the flexibility of having the chance of customizing your own pair of ÆLYT shoes. When working, what’s the most fun material to deal with? And what’s the hardest? I use only genuine leather, from calf to silky effect leather (depending on customers’ request). The most fun is suede and the hardest would be patent leather.

Lets talk about your favorites: Book. I don’t read that much, the last one was “made in Italy - the dark side of fashion world” by (Giò Rosi). I like all historic books about Italian mafia. Music. I like disco music from the 90’s (called Italodance) and I listen to many different kinds of music, depending on my mood. Film. I like comedies, my all time favorite are Italian b-movies of the 80’s, I often watch them if I want to unwind. Place. I like driving around in my car or motorbike. I also would really like to visit the Middle East (KSA and UAE) and Japan one day. Lastly, What should we expect to see in your A/W 2013 collection? You will see some pumps and peep toes in wintery colors, fully customizable in all details, as ever. ne of the most exciting and globalised events in the international art calendar, Art Dubai’s 2013 edition underscored its importance as a fair of discovery with a diverse roster of 75 galleries from 30 countries, including a curated introduction to varied art scenes across West Africa. Of the 500 artists participating this year through exhibiting galleries or Art Dubai’s various programmes, over 50% were from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
Art Dubai further strengthened its credentials as one of the foremost platforms for cultural discussion through the Global Art Forum_7. Entitled ‘It Means This’, the six-day forum explored ‘definitionism’: with at times standing-room-only presentations by artists such as Michael Stipe, Tarek Atoui, Hassan Khan, Ala Younis, and Manal Al Dowayan; curators

Curated by Bisi Silva, Art Dubai’s Marker – a section of gallery booths focusing each year on a country or region - featured artspaces from Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Ghana and Senegal – the first exhibition of contemporary art from West Africa in the Middle East. The diverse offerings ranged from Emeka Ogboh’s sound installation at Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos (CCA, Lagos) to organic carved wooden figures by Amahiguéré Dolo’s at Carpe Diem
(Ségou). During Art Dubai’s press conference, Fair Director Antonia Carver announced Central Asia and the Caucasus as the focus for Marker 2014.The winning works of The Abraaj Group Art Prize’s 5th edition were revealed at the opening of the fair, in ‘extra | ordinary’, an exhibition curated by Murtaza Vali that featured a floor installation of thousands of pieces of lead by Rayyane Tabet, miniature gold statues encased in acrylic by Vartan Avakian; text panels,
photographs and sculptures by Iman Issa, a cabinet of curiosities, home to a variety of objects by Huma Mulji and large scale photography by Hrair Sarkissian. An estimated 45 million USD worth of artworks were exhibited at Art Dubai over the course of the four-day fair. Strong sales – including major acquisitions by collectors and visiting museum groups – were reported at Pilar Corrias (London), Nubuke Foundation (Accra), Athr Gallery (Jeddah) Gallery Isabelle

What is your mood like right now? Lots of music, and lots of Jazz
What inspires you and triggers the photographer in you on a daily basis? Well, my cousin was an amateur photographer, his name is “Abdullah Alshahri� as well, and I admired his photography. So in the beginning, I decided to learn from him. He was my counselor, and we discovered many things together, although he was more than 5 years younger than me, I benefited a lot from him.
Tell us a little about yourself, where you grew up and what were your interests as a child. To be honest in my childhood, I was not interested in anything but Technology. It was the time when computers were available in Saudi Arabia. I was really interested in them and that made my English Language stronger, and gave me good experience in tech. How did you start out in photography? Actually at first I had no interest in photography, I just wanted to know how photographers make movie posters, So in my free time I decided to read a catalogue of a Nikon camera that I had in my room, after that I started going deep, learned more details, and started searching for meanings of photography terms, trying what are the most important elements in a perfect shot? Good Lighting, a model, and a camera. That is all I need!
Have you always been fond of portraits, or is it something that you found yourself directed to by time? As I mentioned before, movie posters, and photos of western celebrities, actors and singers, grabbed my attention. I used to wonder how they took these photos, because I used to take pictures with good cameras but photos turn out in a different quality. I started exploring more in the world of photography, and tried different types but in the end I was not excited about the results especially because they had no artistic since in them, so I went back, and focused on my work by teaching myself, and gaining skills in portraits.
Even though your portfolio showcases portraits as a main subject, you seem to manage giving each person his individuality and that is obvious in every shot, what is your secret? I always make sure that I am friendly enough towards the person who is standing in front of the camera, this way they will feel more comfortable which makes me feel his personality and show it in the picture no matter how sad or funny or serious or even negative they might be.
We also lOVE your fashion photography, how do you make final decisions about the selection of photographs for final presentation, what is it that you look for in a fashion shoot? Oh, it is one of the hardest photography types for me, and the most fun, because I need to focus on the out fit and on the model and her position so the picture will turn out Integrated and in the best way it can be. The final decision usually happens after my full conviction of the picture. I always start by classifying pictures, 10 is the best, I do not settle for anything less than a 10. If the picture had a small problem I will immediately waive it. If you are to travel right now, where is that place that you want to go to and why? I think I would say America so I can visit the best photographers’ studios and learn from them.
Do you think that a photographer needs to travel to improve the quality of his work? Sure, whatever the photographer is educated and Elaborately, but travelling drives the beauty and the imagination out of him/her, and it help by learning from discovering new cultures. What is the track you are playing the most nowadays? This song specifically makes me relax, and feel the peace in myself no matter how tired I am. FOR THE LOVE OF CATS! By: Shaikhah AlYalak Having a pet at home is an activity that dates back to several centuries ago. Millions of human beings from all around the world had probably seen this act as one of a need in them, a need of both affection and companionship. Among many animals that have been kept as pets over the centuries are cats of a variety of breed, color, age, and gender. This common activity amidst humans has its influence on a number of aspects of their lives including: the language that they use, their lifestyle, their culture and their personalities too. Examining these effects thoroughly could be, to some extent, hard to achieve especially when one wants to inspect every domesticated animal. What I attempt to shed light on in this piece of writing is a brief look-at of the influence of domesticated cats on the language to see the way cats leave their prints on it. As long as the English language is concerned, certain proverbs and idioms that exist today, reveal the fact that cats, centuries ago, possessed a “fortunate and superior” position among other pets. These many proverbial examples prove an existing successful satisfaction between a pet and its owner and are also a reflection of the nature of cats in general. For instance, it is often expressed that when something is special or excellent it is the cat’s whiskers, cat’s meow, or cat’s pajamas. To say that someone thinks they are cat’s whiskers, cat’s pajamas, or cat’s meow is a common indicative of being singularly unique. Another example is the expression fat cats is an idiomatic expression that indicates another positive feature; the well-fed and well-cared for cats are usually fat. Hence, to refer to a person as a fat cat means that the person is wealthy and powerful.
Additionally, in his book The Cat and the Human Imagination, Rogers defines that expression the cat that swallowed the canary as “a proverbial example of triumphant satisfaction.” Whoever sits in the catbird seat sits in a powerful dominant position. Alongside this clearly positive image that cats reflect on the language, there is also a somewhat sneaky image in other proverbs and idioms. For instance, when a cat gets someone’s tongue means that they cannot say anything and when someone puts a cat among the pigeons means that they cause trouble. Indeed these are only examples of the many expressions that exist in the language but they definitely shed light on the relationships and place cats preserved in humans’ company throughout history. Moreover, Rogers interestingly claims that these proverbs and idioms that have developed around cats and their behavior with humans result in the fact that cats are independent creatures. He claims that cats “live in our homes without any attempt to conform to our standards; they pursue their own agenda (and) they cannot be relied upon to share our feelings, their minds are less open to us, and they seem quite immune to human.” We unconsciously see cats as different from ourselves; we see them as independently self-assured creatures with distinct qualities with which we feel comfortable living. We see the enormous contribution cats have made to humans throughout history. Keeping a cat at home is more than a luxurious act; it is an act of bonding with an independent character and feelings with which the owner feels not alone, but absolutely an owner of a true friend whose presence is uniquely pleasant.

Thats why during our fast pace life we tend to run to work, run to school, run everywhere carrying our cold sandwiches and re-heated coffee. We eat in a hurry, alone, and quiet. And by saying that, please don’t get me wrong, and think I meant sandwiches are bad or coffee -God forbid-! Early morning is a chance to deal with yesterdays hanged issues, keep up with the family latest news, build small kids -and adults- confidence before a tough day. During breakfast try to relax and postpone everything to its own time, and please avoid watching the news so early. You wont need a dictionary to tell you that Breakfast means breaking your night fast with food! But you do need to remember this is the most crucial meal in your day Whenever you decide to whine about how lazy or distracted or even how fat you are, stop for a moment and think: When was the last time you had breakfast?
Cereal Killers! To have a healthy breakfast is to eat like a king! Think about the nutritional pyramid and pick an item from each level. You should have a meal that is rich and full of colors to be able to call it healthy. Soda and potato chips for breakfast? Large chocolate cake and a million flavor coffee? I don’t believe in this crazy so called hip method! You will set down and eat slow and warm food to help you through the morning.

Let it hatch Over the years researches have studied the perfect foods to eat on breakfast, and eggs would always win. Studies showed that eggs were more satisfying. People who had eggs for breakfast every other day were more healthy and curbed their hunger for a longer period of time. A study published in International Journal of Obesity in 2008 showed that people who had whole eggs for breakfast lost more weight than others who didn’t, they lost 65% more to be exact. And if you started worrying about your cholesterol levels just by reading this, the study also disapproved the old idea so eating eggs daily or every other day wont hurt you. You want something more? A St. Louis University study found that people who ate eggs for their breakfast had more energy, and burned off nearly 300 calories without even exercising!

Watch TV, If you insist While watching the news might put you down a bit, watching fun a creative shows might do the exact opposite for your day. A whole entertainment industry was built around breakfast time. Its officially called “Breakfast Television” or “Morning Show” and according to wikipedia it is “a type of infotainment television program, broadcast live in the morning (typically scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.). Often hosted by a small team of male and female hosts, morning shows typically target the combined demographic of people getting ready for work and school, and stay-at-home adults and parents” The world oldest morning show -and our favorite too- is “Today” and it was presented by the NBC Network in
1952. This show is still number one in ratings, and other shows tried to copy or catch up behind it. Morning and Breakfast shows will talk to you about the weather ahead, what to wear for a meeting, and most importantly what to cook for lunch! Also it will air light entertainment news and funny family videos and wont burden you with world politics when you wake up.

While some sources refer to the European continent and this kind of breakfast is linked to it, some other references suggests its linked to England. They are both right as long as we end up having croissant and delicious pastries along with fruit preserve, butter, cheese, cold cut meats and drinks.
