VUONG CHU SELECTED WORKS • CAL POLY POMONA M. ARCH

Biography

Vuong Chu was a Graduate student at Cal Poly Pomona, graduated with M.Arch degree in Spring 2019. Vuong studied in Urban Planning program at Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture in Vietnam and got his B.Arch degree there. Vuong moved to the U.S. eight years ago with his family and attended several colleges before getting into Cal Poly Pomona, such as Cypress College, Mt. SAC, and Orange Coast College. Vuong got A.S. Degree in Architecture from Orange Coast College. While studying there, Vuong got awarded with 2 scholarships, the Cy Rockey Scholarship and the Manuel “Manny” Nunes Urban Planning and Architecture Scholarship. When attending Cal Poly Pomona, Vuong was awarded the Environmental Controls Award and the Colin Lewis Hotaling Memorial Scholarship. At the Architecture Department’s graduation banquet, Vuong was honored with the Henry Adams Medal and Certificate of Merit from the AIA for excellent in the study of architecture by achieving highest GPA of the Master class of 2019. Vuong was also recognized as a member of Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society in Architecture and allied Arts, and his studio design works were included in Cal Poly Pomona’s student architecture exhibition Interims for all semesters. Vuong has been working for tBP Architecture Inc. for the past four years as an intern and then Job Captain. While studying master degree, Vuong also worked as Graduate Assistant to assist Professors in their teaching by grading students’ works and answering students’ questions. Vuong has a keen interest in design works which serve public population. Vuong is looking for full-time salary position at a contemporary innovative architecture firm in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Thesis

This thesis explores architectural opportunities emerged from the shifts in pedagogy and curriculum structure to design an appropriate high school typology for the future generations and connect school to its urban context, integrating it into the community neighborhood where it is fit in.

This thesis also explores the future of building design and technologies where buildings are “living entities” that contribute positively to natural environment and their surroundings through the design process to meet the living building challenge criteria.

In addition, the design ties back to the goals of the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan done in 2007 and utilizes the public preferred master plan at China-Cornfield area to be the context to respond to.

It further visualizes the Master Plan goals providing public space for recreation, nature interaction, and public awareness on protecting living environment.

Design Philosophy

American education system has been following a traditional model which is defined from the industrial revolution period. This traditional model based on social and societal constructs focused on conformity and standardization modeled after industrialism, grouping students by age and educating them by the masses through the dissemination of Knowledge. It is characterized with row of classrooms planking both sides of a corridor. Inside of each classroom, student desks are organized in row facing a presentation wall. In addition to the outdated model, the teaching pedagogy has been a passive learning where teacher pass down information to students passively and one sided.

According to Henry Sanoff, increasing research indicates that students learn best in different educational settings depending on their abilities, causing the one-size-fits-all approach to be replaced by more diverse learning environment. Education should not be a passive act at all. Students have the right to actively pursue their subject interest in different environment. Each student’s learning ability and interest is unique, and education system should support it. Moreover, education should encompass and foster development in all 5 learning aspects, including physical, psychological, emotional, self-esteem, and knowledge base. To do this, education would need to integrate with the community to provide a holistic education.

High school education should provide different modes of learning as listed beside, especially the one that foster individual’s learning path. With more and more technology available for students in 21st Century, students have the mean to reach outside the boundary of school and integrate their learning into community and its surrounding. Therefore, school for the next generations is anything else but a big box isolated from the urban fabric and community connection.

Architecture should not be isolated and disconnected to the urban fabric and the surrounding environment.

Beside to be a space beautifully designed addressing spatial relationship and the basic function of a building, a great architecture in the 21st Century should be able to connect occupants to light, air, nature, and community while self-sufficiently remain within the resource limits of the site. It should create a positive impact on the human and natural systems that interact with it.

Organizing the building into several layers for each function. This method simplifies the complexity of the program adjacency and allows for the floor plans and sections be easily read.

A fusion between two typologies to form a hybrid.

The two typologies house different programs and are visually separated by a transparent layer in between. The transition between private and public spaces also take place at the in between layer.

Building structure is fully expressed and exposed. This creates an industrial appearance for the school and makes it fit into the new development. The exposed structure also expresses the idea of revealing the primary core of knowledge, making it easily accessible by everyone.

There is no boundary separating the school and neighborhood as well as no boundary separating private and public. This allows for seamlessly integrating public program into school and encouraging interaction between student and public.

The grid module that governs the building design is integrated with a pattern of facade. The pattern is a system of 3 different types of panel forming 10 different possibilities based on the division of the grid. These panel creates a negative panels of themselves when positioning onto the grid module, creating a second reading of the facade.

Architectural elements are designed to create a sense of lightness. The classroom bar appears to be floating in the air over the podium. Then it is further divided into grid to breakdown the linear massive bar, making it appearing lighter with thin steel tube for facade structure.

Main Building

Cantilever Amphitheater

Structure Layout

structure system. The cantilever pivots off from the truss-structure column anchoring deep into the ground.

Separating structure systems for the main building and the amphitheater allows for them to act separately. This is the best option since the force acting on each system is intuitively different. The main bar is a point-load structure system, while the amphitheater is a cantilever system.

The structure of the main building is formed by girders spanning across the building with beams spanning in between of them. The structure is governed by 30 feet square grid where columns are located at grid nodes.

The floating bar is built as a glass box with steel structure to create lightness and transparency. Perforated metal panel within the grid module enhances the depth of the facade, making the classroom bar appearing porous.

Maximum Buildable Envelope The buildable envelope encloses entire site area with no setbacks up to 90’ high. The required programs would fill half of this envelope allowing the school to blend in with surrounding context height.

Compression / Push The massing is designed with higher mass facing the urban development and lower mass facing the river park. This maintains the urban edge along the street and provides views toward the river park. Greenscape is arranged next to the river park to connect the building to the park.

Connect / Extend / Boolean The classroom bar is lifted up and extended to create a visual distinction between the podium and the bar.

The podium is booleaned to provide direct connection from the housing development to the river park.

Compress The podium is compressed at one edge creating direct access to the second floor roof-top where public activities are organized.

The classroom bar consists of two levels housing fourth learning suites, two-level amphitheater, and teachers’ support offices.

The second level houses two gallery glass rooms and outdoor cafeteria.

The podium level houses administration offices and public retail and kitchen to serve and connect the school and public.

Two sub levels provides space for parking and a main gymnasium.

They also houses mechanical room and water treatment room.

Vertical circulation consists of two sets of linear staircases on the East facade and two sets of fire exit staircases of the West facade. Elevators provides accessible access to all levels.

The administration, the gymnasium, and the retail / kitchen functions are separated into different building blocks to reduce the building mass on this floor. This creates more outdoor spaces for public activities and student outdoor living lab.

Design - Public Interaction Level

The two galleries rooms are enclosed with glass wall to maximize transparency, creating visual effect of the classroom bar floating on the podium. This two galleries showcase students’ research on sustainable and environmental studies to raise public awareness on the issue.

Most of the space are outdoor spaces tasked with public event spaces and a cafeteria. The gym roof-top provides excellent space for small class activities such as yoga class or group dance.

The glass floor creates an visual image of a void left behind by the amphitheater being lifted up. Together with the cut-out open to below, they allows for day lighting illuminating the ground level underneath.

Design - Classroom Level

These two floors are enclosed with curtain wall spanning all the way to the roof with shading system on East and West facades. The learning suites and teacher support offices are grouped in a linear band located on the west side of the floor and are connected by a single loaded corridor on east side to provide views toward the river park.

The classrooms are ventilated through evaporative cooling towers while the corridor is natural ventilated with operable windows. Direct access to the catwalk between the curtain wall and the shading panels provides interstitial experience for observers.

The amphitheater is structurally separated from the building and cantilevers out toward the river park.

It provides observation platform for city sightseeing with a direct access from second floor through a flight of linear staircase.

Living Machine System

Water is pumped from on site underground water table. Blackwater and grey water is treated on site through a system of wetland plants on the ground floor and second floor. This system allows the school to operate without using portable water source.

Evaporative Cooling Tower

The building is naturally ventilated to provide indoor thermal comfort through two evaporative cooling towers located between the two learning suites. The towers penetrate from the roof to second floor provide cooled air to enclosed spaces within the building. This minimized the energy use of mechanical system which share a large portion of the EUI in the building.

Context

Located in the Hoag Hospital Complex in Newport Beach, the project is planned on the existing parking lot which is 50ft below the residential complex at North of the site. With the open view to the ocean on the South side, the chosen site clearly has a front and a back.

The driven concept of this design is to create a uplifting experience for patients, staffs, and visitors to this Hoag Family Cancer Center through two key methods.

Firstly, integrate a green and active green ribbon in between parking structure and the Cancer Center to elevate patients’ experience from the beginning of their journey. This also helps to turn the back of the site / center into the second from entrance.

Secondly, through the shapes of architectural elements, create an abstract image of the Hoag logo, stimulating the link between them to connect patients’ experience to Hoag exceptional services.

The green ribbon is divided into three areas that correspond to patient’s experience through different stages of their journey, from diagnosing to treating and then recovering.

Staff, public, and patient circulations are separated through different access points which connect directly to separate corridors for each circulation.

Context

Highland Park Community has been a shady neighborhood area where housing developments are gated off from the outside to protect the residents.

Moreover, the lack of green spaces in the area also contribute to the seclusion of the neighborhoods in which residents have little or no interaction to the environment and people behind the closed walls.

However, with the transforming in demographic as well as economy in the area, the safety of environment has been getting better and better each year.

The project is located in a historic preservation zone where the neighbor houses are historically listed or contributing to the historic value of the area.

On top of the historic overlay zone, the location is right on the border of the Avenue 57 Transit Oriented District plan with the Gold Line passing by just North of the site. These specific overlays are reflected in the design of the Casa Roja.

The Casa Roja aims to set a new standard for the housing developments, creating a lively environment connecting the project to the city with a contemporary look while still preserving the link to the historical value of the neighborhood through the choice of materials and the responsive scale of the overall built envelope.

Demolish existing buildings consist of two separated parallel apartment blocks.

Maximum envelope 45’ height with 15’ front and rear setback and 6’ side set-backs.

Interlocking between buildings and landscape/outdoor spaces.

Landscape / outdoor spaces are distributed to the ground floor and the second floor.

Subtract main horizontal circulation at the middle of the site, separating the parking and the units while connecting the two vertical circulation points.

Parking structure is located below the housing units, raising the units up to get more southern light.

Context

Idea: The design enhances traversing and adventurous experience throughout the site horizontally and vertically while retaining and enriching the connection of both vineyards on each side of the project. Production and hospitality programs are intertwined to provide an authentic experience of a winery for both visitors and stay-in.

Parti:Two main programs which are production and hospitality are mixed up in a two bars scheme that is elongated side by side along the dominant axis of the site. These 2 bars are then bisected with five pushing forces from vineyards on both sides, providing connection physically and visually to both vineyards.

Making The tectonic palette: concrete wall, structural steel column and beam. The enclosing palette: double pane low-E transparent glass with glass fins, concrete wall, hard wood. The skin palette: horizontal wood louvers as secondary skin system.

The traversing experience is designed with two close loop circulation. The vertical traversing experience starts with a slope/cactus garden roof with ADA accessible ramp bisecting a glass box, leading to the hospitality level and then all the way up to the observation platform at the top of observation tower.

The horizontal experience happens when one traverse the site following the five bisecting sections. Three out of five are above zero ground plan, and the other two are below and underground. At any point of the site, one can fully immerse in the exploration of the design.

The right side bar which is hospitality dominant is lifted up allowing for direct connection between vineyards as well as providing a courtyard with panoramic view of the vineyard while also protecting privacy of the stay-in visitors.
