NebulaNAS: Transformational Cloud Storage for Media Production

The pandemic forced media production operations to forgo storage system upgrades while simultaneously changing to remote workflows. Now, “work from anywhere” is common in content production, but those aging on-premises storage systems aren’t built for remote access and collaboration.

That’s why many media organizations are moving from on-prem hardware deployments to cloud storage. Cloud storage can be more affordable, accessible, scalable, and efficient than on-prem storage and, most importantly, bring unprecedented flexibility to collaborative content creation. These companies have discovered that their current systems lack the speed, performance, security, and ease of use to support a global workforce and meet today’s more complex project requirements.

NebulaNAS cloud storage from GB Labs provides the cloud solution media and production professionals’ demand.

Developed from the ground up for media and production professionals, NebulaNAS provides four critical benefits for producers, artists, editors, and the companies they work for:

• Media Centricity: Designed by media professionals for the most demanding workflows, NebulaNAS supports existing creative and management tools today … at any frame rate, file size, format, or bit rate.

• Cloud Flexibility: NebulaNAS operates across a distributed cloud architecture, providing added security and operational uptime and improving performance by managing data across thousands of distributed servers. Users benefit from cloud scalability, with the flexibility to add local and NVM local and NVMe caching storage and mount drives seamlessly, mirroring existing work styles.

• Local Performance: NebulaNAS operates like on-prem storage but with several advantages. Users can interact with the storage from anywhere in the world, collaborate in near real-time with other users regardless of location, and do so with a minimal learning curve. Applications like online editing fly because users access only the bits of files they need instead of an entire file all at once.

With NebulaNAS:

• Enterprise Security: In addition to utilizing thousands of distributed cloud servers to house files, NebulaNAS protects files in flight and at rest with 256-bit AES encryption. The system maintains file access and credential control regardless of the user’s location. The audit management system holds historical data showing who interacted with which files, when, and from what location.

• There is no need to invest in extra switches and bandwidth to deliver top performance

• There is no need to copy files onto hard drives.

• There is no need to download and upload an entire file to work on a fraction of it.

• There is no need to unnecessarily duplicate content and archive more than necessary because it’s unclear which files to keep.

NebulaNAS is transformational for any media company or multisite organization that stores and collaborates on media creation and production management across locations.

Prepare to be transformed! Visit GB Labs at IBC2024 on Stand 7.A09a to see NebulaNAS in action.

With the media landscape in flux, this IBC our customers are asking: is Adobe the answer?

We’re not even halfway through the 2020s, and it already feels fair to call it one of the most chaotic decades in the history of the media industry. In the last four years we’ve managed to pack in a pandemic, mass strikes, production booms, commissioning droughts and the consolidation and dissolution of major vendors, facilities and studios.

Book a meeting with Jigsaw24 Media at IBC

It’s been a wild time. And not surprisingly, it has people asking questions about their long-term future. Questions like “do I want to bet my entire workflow on a single vendor if the future is uncertain?” or “is there a more agile way to deliver live content?” and “does our newsroom still need to rely on legacy on premises MOS systems rather than more modern APIs?”

And whenever we hear people asking these questions, there’s usually another one not far behind: “should we take another look at Premiere Pro?”

Why the sudden interest in Premiere Pro?

At a time when change seems inevitable, there are several compelling reasons to choose Adobe.

First of all, they’re an established tech brand, with a broad enough user base that their product set and delivery models are unlikely to change without warning. Most production and post facilities will already have an After Effects aficionado working on their motion graphics and effects. Adobe’s workflow has even been endorsed for large-scale projects by creators as diverse as David Fincher and the makers of Coronation Street.

“We’re here to help people who want to harness all the freedom and flexibility that comes with an Adobe workflow, without taking on any of the perceived risk.”

Adobe Premiere Pro is also the NLE of choice for many UK further and higher education institutions, meaning much of Britain’s up and coming talent trains in Adobe first. “We have a number of clients who effectively tell graduates to forget everything they learned at university

and re-train them completely on a different NLE as soon as they’re hired,” says Lead Technical Pre-Sales Consultant Phill Boettcher. “But given the recent pressures on the industry, we’re definitely hearing more people question whether that’s a good use of their time and resources.”

Ultimately though, one of the biggest draws is simply that Premiere Pro offers facilities a very open ecosystem which prioritises freedom of choice – and always has.

the best choice available, or just the best choice that you’re aware of. One of our main goals for this year’s IBC is to help customers understand what changes they’ll need to make in order to adopt a story-first workflow, how they can prepare for them, and which tools will make any changes easiest on their creatives.”

“Adobe came of age in creative agencies, where video work is typically much less structured than it needs to be in post, but that doesn’t

A surprisingly simple scale up

Most of the major creative platforms, storage applications and management tools you find in production, post and live environments already have some degree of compatibility with Adobe Creative Cloud. Its ubiquity in the wider creative industries and welcoming attitude toward third party integrations mean that if you want to increase Adobe’s presence in your organisation, many of your existing tools will still work. And we don’t mean they might work with it one day, once the developers behind the technology have gotten to grips with Adobe’s API and received a critical mass of customer requests – we mean they probably work already.

“In a larger facility, it can be comforting to have everything in a single vendor ecosystem end to end, with a single point of support,” he says. “In an Adobe environment, any complex workflow has to be multivendor, and they tend not to qualify one software option or hardware build above others, meaning it’s not always clear whether you’re making

mean that Adobe tools are inherently incapable of handling stricter workflows. For example, we’re with MoovIT on booth 7A59 showcasing a fantastic project management solution that covers ingest, rendering, archive and reporting. We’re here to help people who want to harness all the freedom and flexibility that comes with an Adobe workflow, without taking on any of the perceived risk.”

Assimilate’s Jeff Edson and Mazze Aderhold Speak to VueTech News Ahead of IBC 2024

What tools will you be displaying at IBC?

Jeff Edson: We will be showing Live FX for image-based lighting workflows and Live FX Studio for virtual production projection mapping. You will find our IBL solution running at Quasar Science, Aputure, Creamsource and Kino Flo booths. Live FX Studio will be demoed in private sessions.

In a nutshell – what are Live FX and Live FX Studio?

Mazze Aderhold: Live FX is the industry standard for image-based lighting. It can take in any kind of video format, codec, resolution or frame rate, either from a clip on disk, or in the form of a live signal. From there it allows to sample different areas of the image, and control not only any light that is DMX-controllable, but also video fixtures, like the Kino Flo Mimiks. It allows to colorgrade and accurately color manage stage lighting.

Live FX Studio is a superset, which includes features to do virtual set extensions and projection mapping of 2D, 2.5D, 360/180 plates, as well as 3D content in the form of Notch Blocks and USD scenes. Of course it also allows to efficiently work

with Unreal Engine – and that even without the need for nDisplay or Switchboard, which makes things faster and easier to set up.

What do you expect will be the hot topics this year?

Edson: IBL (image-based lighting) was a big hit last year, and since then more and more people have realized how it enhances virtual production. Over the past year, we’ve greatly improved and redesigned the IBL toolset in Live FX, and this has made it the go-to software solution for gaffers and lighting board programmers.

Aderhold: Another important topic is efficiency. We have seen Live FX being used in a very broad spectrum of the market. While it has been added more and more to large LED stages, it is predominantly being used to drive smaller and medium sized stages, as people are understanding better how to effectively use the technology. The ease of use allows them to get started and achieve great results in a very short amount of time. At Assimilate, we believe in democratizing virtual production and making it more accessible for everyone — Live FX Studio achieves exactly that.

Where is Live FX (Studio) being used at the moment?

Edson: So there are many commercials, music videos, high speed motion control spots all using Live FX, as well as an ever growing number of major film and streaming productions in process as we speak. Productions for all of the major streaming platforms and studios are using Live FX today, some will release later this year, some in 2025. Watch this space. This is the way. In addition, the need for training people and the next generation of artists is key. Our EDU program has been very successful in putting Live FX in the hands of film schools around the world, giving free access to the Virtual Production classes.

What trends have you been seeing over the past year relating to your section of the industry?

Aderhold: Plate workflows, as opposed to 3D environments, and access to color tools that DPs know from finishing sessions have become increasingly important for virtual production. Content creation for VP is being used in new and inventive ways outside of game engines, and that has become increasingly popular. Another thing is image-based lighting. People are starting to realize that IBL is not exclusive to LED-wall-based virtual production. It also greatly enhances the imagery with greenscreen shoots and allows for much more believable lighting, creating color true reflections.

What’s the most exciting thing being developed right now that people might not realize is worth discovering?

Edson: Generative AI for content creation. We’ve been working closely with Cuebric to streamline the workflow from the idea onto the big screen. In private events we have shown that it only takes 30 mins from entering a prompt to a fully rotoscoped, inpainted 2.5D setup that appears through Live FX on the LED volume and looks absolutely stunning with believeable parallax, while also saving on hardware resources. We think we will see more AI-based solutions for VP this IBC.

Argosy’s mission critical infrastructure solutions: A forty-year journey

It has been a quite a few years since Argosy were known as ‘cable shifters’. In fact, the company was never just that. It’s values and gold-standard service levels have always been at the heart of its foundations and they’re the reason why the company has continued to grow over the course of forty years. Argosy is now an established provider of missioncritical infrastructure solutions for the Media & Entertainment industry and beyond.

In 1984 Argosy began as a small components distribution business and by 1991, its founder Mike Purnell had joined forces with Ken Eckardt to buy a cable distribution company. Together, they shifted focus from supplying small components to supplying solutions and services to the broadcast industry, growing Argosy from a two-person operation to a company with three sites. Since 2018, myself and co-partner, Josh Simons have been leading the team.

Argosy has expanded its products and services from cables and connectors to racking, patching, mains distribution and recently, KVM and network switches and servers. Its portfolio offers a broad range of best-of-breed and inhouse solutions, as well as services such as cable housing and fibre termination to help to ease the deployment of both fixed and temporary installations.

Argosy launched cleaning and repair services for damaged cables, building a fibre termination facility as well as an assembly department onsite. These capabilities enable cost-conscious clients to reuse costly cables instead of procuring new assemblies after minimal use.

This expansion from a focus on product distribution to procurement solutions fosters broadcasters’ and other sectors, such as Pro-AV and even the military sectors’ ability to navigate the increasingly complex set of infrastructure options at their disposal.

IBC Celebrations

To celebrate our 40th anniversary at IBC (Stand 10.C51), Argosy will be encouraging show visitors to vote for a broadcast-related charity by way of tokens in exchange for feedback about Argosy as a brand, to find out why people buy from us. We’ll also be holding a drinks reception at the show, and I’ve also signed up for a 10km run to raise money for our designated charity, BucksVision.

FIBRE PATCH PANEL SOLUTION

We’ll be further marking our forty-year milestone at IBC 2024 with the launch of our new EasyLink Pro plug & play fibre patch panel. It’s a completely unique solution we’ve developed specifically for the Media & Entertainment industry.

For years now, traditional broadcasters and wiremen have been struggling with the pulling of preterminated fibre cables through usually overloaded and hard to access cable routes, then having to dress standard 24-port 1U patch panels. The current solution involves using a cheap pull sock assembled with some clear tube and tape - a fiddly process. With fibre cables being stiff, bulky and the staggered break out on 900um legs being prone to damage; they may break during the installation process - a costly exercise both price and time-wise.

The alternative is to implement high density solutions as data centres do, although squeezing up to 144 fibre cables in a 1U space is more of a ‘plug & forget’ solution - whereas in broadcast, studio and touring you may need to set up for a specific productions and as broadcasters, we like to patch, and see what we are patching, therefore high density solutions are not suitable for these applications.

A revolutionary plug & play solution amalgamates these two systems in the form of our new EasyLink Pro fibre patch panel system.

We have reduced the cable element to the smallest form factor whilst retaining the utmost cable integrity enabling easy cable pulling and installation via MPO/MTP interface. The front end patching interface retains the familiarity of traditional patching systems but includes a familiar ident strip that provides broadcasters with easy visual identification. These combined allow easy deployment of the system with minimal risk of damage and utmost speed.

Argosy’s EasyLink Pro is available in two standard polarity options; Type A or Type B polarity.

We’ll also be highlighting our SMPTE hyperflex cable, the Argosy Image broadcast-specific rack, Canare 4K patch panels and G&D’s KVM solutions.

Argosy has partnered with top manufacturers to expand its product range which now includes over 16,000 SKUs. Many of Argosy’s supplier relationships have been established for decades, including Prysmian-Draka, Neutrik, Percon, Belden and BES.

The company’s success story is a reflection of its adaptability, innovative spirit, and unwavering dedication to customer satisfaction. A legacy of excellence in broadcasting and communications has defined its journey. Thank you to all our staff, partners, customers and supporters who’ve contributed to our success over forty years.
