The office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is a team of professional and graduate staff members who provide advising, resources, support, and leadership development opportunities for students in our community. Our vision is to be a fraternity and sorority community inspiring lifetime engagement in the spirit of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). Our mission is to coach and educate our community, organizations, and members through cultivating leadership, encouraging personal growth, fostering health & safety, and expanding spaces of belonging for students to ExperienceVT while embracing Ut Prosim as a way of life.
Four governing councils make up the Virginia Tech fraternity and sorority community and provide coordination to the chapters they represent. Each governing council is unique in its operation and serves its chapters according to its own philosophy, purpose, and values.

A Fraternity and Sorority Life Glossary
Active: An initiated member who is in good standing with their chapter.
Alumni: Members who are no longer active members of a collegiate chapter and have left in good standing with the organization.
Associate / New Member: A person who has accepted a bid, participated in the organization’s new member education process, and not initiated into a sorority or fraternity.

Bid/Pin: A formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority.

Crossing: Ceremony in which new members of culturally-based organizations become active, lifelong members.
Divine Nine: Another name for the nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations that comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).
Formal Sorority Recruitment: A series of recruitment events organized by the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities that introduce chapters to potential new members.

Graduate Advisor / Graduate Chapter: An individual or group of alumni working to advise the local undergraduate chapter. This network is affiliated with the national organization and not the university.

Potential New Member (PNM): A student who is interested in joining a fraternity or sorority.
Prophyte: Term referring to older members in culturally based Greek-letter organizations.
Ritual: Beliefs and standards of a fraternal organization, which govern their purpose; some ritual activities may be closed to non-initiated members.
Saluting: A tradition common to many Latinx Greek-letter Organizations. A unique art of reciting information in a line formation, it involves a line of members performing intense, in-sync, and sharp hand and body movements, with greetings attributing to others, honoring past and current accomplishments, or cherishing the cultural history, heritage, and traditions of the organization.
Stroll: A dance in a line of active members displaying pride and knowledge of their organization and values. Chapters typically have national and local strolls that incorporate a variety of moves and hand signs unique to their organization.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) hosts several signature events each year that highlight the legacy, impact, and vibrancy of Black Greek-letter organizations.
NPHC WEEK
Each academic semester begins with NPHC Week, a themed week of programs centered on education, unity, and visibility. Events often include service projects, game nights, and NPHC 101, an informational session designed to educate interested students about the council’s history, values, and membership intake process.
Dr. Zenobia L. Hikes Homecoming Yard Show
The Annual Dr. Zenobia L. Hikes Homecoming Yard Show is held during the week of homecoming to bring students, alumni, and the university community together to highlight the culture of the Divine 9 organizations through stepping and strolling.
Dr. Overton R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship & Step Show
The Annual Overton R. Johnson Step Show was launched in 1986, and is held each spring to bring students, alumni, and the university community together for a friendly competition to highlight the culture of the Divine 9 organizations through stepping and strolling to see which fraternity and sorority will take home the trophy. To further honor Dr. Johnson’s legacy a university-wide scholarship was established and officially endowed in 1985 to be awarded during the show to a current student(s).
These events serve not only as cultural celebrations but also as opportunities for education, connection, and leadership development within the campus community.

OAK LANE COMMUNITY
At Virginia Tech, many of our fraternities and sororities call Oak Lane home. Located behind the golf course, Oak Lane is composed of 19 individual chapter houses and the NPHC House. Oak Lane seeks to provide opportunities for students to create community, engage in sisterhood/ brotherhood, and live out their unique chapter experiences. Additionally, Oak Lane strives to build unity within the interfraternal community. Members of chapters who have a house in Oak Lane may be expected to live there during some point of their membership.
OFF CAMPUS HOUSING
Officially recognized off-campus fraternity homes are privately owned and serve as housing for members of a recognized fraternity. Although not owned by the university, these homes are formally affiliated with the institution through their chapter’s recognition and are expected to adhere to university, council, and municipal policies. Living in an officially recognized home fosters a strong sense of brotherhood, provides convenient access to chapter activities, and offers a supportive, values-based living environment.
STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE
In the spirit of our mission, Fraternity and Sorority Life offers the Standards of Excellence program to showcase chapters intentionally aiming for excellence. Participating chapters aspire to excel in six certification categories to highlight their collective contributions and accomplishments. Certification Categories include Community Engagement, Chapter Support and Leadership Development, Maintaining Healthy Environments and Member Experiences, Administrative Excellence, Academic Excellence, and Community Relations (“Good Neighborhood Grade”). At the end of each academic year, “Certified Chapters” will receive a culminating “Platinum,” “Gold,” or “Bronze” rating, as well as ratings in each of the six categories.
SUSPENDED AND/OR UNRECOGNIZED ORGANIZATIONS
We also wish to provide you information about organizations that have lost recognition from Virginia Tech and/or their international organizations due to disciplinary action. While some of these organizations may still operate, they have no affiliation with Virginia Tech. Please see our Statement on Unrecognized Chapters for more details regarding the suspensions of these organizations. Given that these groups were suspended due to violations of the Student Code of Conduct, such as the hazing and alcohol beverage policies, we encourage you to have conversations with your students about the risks of joining these organizations or participating in their events. The following organizations are currently unrecognized by the university: Delta Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, Pi Kappa Phi, and Pi Lambda Phi Additionally, there are several local organizations that have no affiliation with the university and are not connected to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, such as Omega Alpha Kappa (OAK), Center Club, and Gold Club.
