I am so excited to welcome you to my first summer at the helm of this acclaimed and beloved theatre company.

The plays and musicals that we’ll enjoy this season look at all the ways that Weston Playhouse Theatre builds community and inspires conversation. Together, we will explore how the stage invites us to imagine new worlds, forge new connections, and experience the joy of shared feeling—laughter and longing, elation and heartache.

This season dives deep into Weston’s passion for making theatre that matters to us now, theatre that enlivens the classics and advances new voices. At our flagship Playhouse and at our new venue, Walker Farm, we will experience the full range of American theatre, exploring the ideas and questions that bind us together today.

I am thrilled to be sharing this adventure with you. Welcome to Weston, and enjoy the show!

Susanna Gellert Executive Artistic Director

SUSANNA GELLERT (Executive Artistic Director) is a director, artistic producer, and teacher.

Prior to joining Weston in July 2018, she was Associate Producer and Director of the Studio at New York’s acclaimed Theatre for a New Audience. There she produced Shakespeare’s Pericles directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, the world premiere of Adrienne Kennedy’s He Brought Her Heart Back In A Box, and award-winning productions of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin Of Our Teeth and An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Susanna was Artistic Producer and Resident Director at Center Stage in Baltimore where she developed the theatre’s ground breaking Third Space Initiative and produced My America, which commissioned monologues by Christopher Durang, Rinne Groff, Lynn Nottage, and others. Directing credits in New York and Baltimore include Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley, Christopher Marlowe’s Tamburlaine, and world premieres of Mud Blue Sky by Marisa Wegrzyn, and Open the Dark Door by David Nugent. Susanna teaches in the MFA Directing program at the New School. She holds degrees from Yale University, Columbia University, and the University of Chicago.

Vermont’s oldest professional theatre is a living testament to the unique bond that can develop between a company of artists and its community.

In the midst of the Great Depression, Weston-born architect Raymond Austin was putting the finishing touches on a playhouse that one Boston Globe critic would dub “the most beautiful theatre in New England.” A former church renovated for the town dramatic club, the Weston Playhouse attracted the attention of director Harlan Grant, who launched the theatre’s first summer stock season in 1937, featuring a young actor named Lloyd Bridges.

The company flourished under Grant and later, producer Walter Boughton, giving a start to such talented artists as Emmy-winning actor Christopher Lloyd and Tony-winning designer John Lee Beatty. Musicals were added to the canon, a late-night entertainment called The Cellar (later, the Cabaret), occasional touring, and a restaurant. Owned by the Weston Community Association and rented by the theatre company during the summer season, the Playhouse was supported by its community through three war-torn summers in the 1940’s, a fire that destroyed the original Greek revival building in 1962, and flooding which challenged its replacement a decade later and again in 2011.

In 1988, directors Malcolm Ewen, Tim Fort, and Steve Stettler took the reins, rededicating the theatre to its community and reorganizing it as a not-for-profit, Equity company. “Weston” is now an award-winning regional theatre nationally-known for its multi-stage summer festival and its year-round Education and New Works programs.

The theatre opened a new second stage, Weston Playhouse at Walker Farm, in September 2017.

This state-of-the-art, year-round center for the arts complements Weston’s summer programming on its flagship Playhouse stage while allowing the company to expand its role as an incubator for the arts and foster connections with its cherished community.

After 30 years, the trio of Founding Directors (Ewen, Fort, and Stettler) decided the summer of 2018 would be their last. The time had come for new energy. After a nine-month national search, the board hired new Executive Artistic Director Susanna Gellert, a New York City-based artist with deep ties to Vermont, to lead Weston into the future.

CELINA DEAN is delighted to be making her Weston Playhouse debut.

Various regional credits include work at Actors Theater of Louisville, the Mark Taper Forum, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Merrimack Rep, Notre Dame Shakespeare Company, Dad’s Garage, and Second City. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Celina has worked on plays, musicals, cabaret and improv across Canada and the US. She was seen most recently on NBC’s Blindspot and does voice over work for ABC’s The Rookie. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband Josh and dog Emerson Pie.

DOMINIC DORSET is fresh out of his freshman year at the University of Michigan as a musical theatre major. He is thrilled to be joining the Weston community this summer! Favorite productions include Chino in West Side Story (Dexter, MI), Leading Player in Pippin (Saline, MI), Warner in Legally Blonde (University of Michigan, M.U.S.K.E.T.), and recently Michael McElroy's "Broadway Our Way" concert at the University. SARAH FISCHER is thrilled to make her debut with Weston Playhouse this summer! Originally from Niagara Falls Canada, Sarah graduated with a BA from Western University, then moved to New York City to train and pursue dance full time. Recent credits include ensemble in Warren Carlyle’s Havana! and Le Cygne in Happy Hour Prohibition: the Musical on board the Norwegian Bliss. We believe that the two hours an audience member spends in their seat is just the beginning of their relationship with the theatre. Support from a growing number or individuals and institutions allows us to offer a broad range of programs for theatre lovers and artists of all ages.

Dive into the history of the season and learn more about what makes each Weston production unique. Special live events allow audiences to engage with the season one show at a time. Show Notes, our in-depth audience guides, further your connection to each production. They are published on our website at least two weeks prior to opening and are displayed in the lobby throughout the season.

VERMONT YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS

In collaboration with the Flynn Center and Vermont Stage, a Weston teaching artist guides high school students in writing their own original one-act plays. In the spring, selected plays are presented as staged readings under professional direction during a special evening on the Weston stage.

ACCESS SERVICES

For all of our performances, Weston offers large print programs and infrared listening devices. When possible, we offer American Sign Language (ASL) and Audio Described (AD) performances for Deaf/hard of hearing and low-vision/blind audience members.

EARLY STAGES

Weston teaching artists work with local elementary school students to create their own theatrical material based on the summer production performed by the Young Company.

Early Stages culminates with the Playdate at the Playhouse; a performance of students’ work and a day of free family fun on the Weston Green.

THEATRELAB

TheatreLab students have VIP access to our 2019 season, seeing all 6 of our summer productions, shadowing directors, sitting in on rehearsals, workshopping with technicians, and developing professional insight to take their knowledge of theatre to the next level.

Students (ages 12 - 18) get a true insider’s look at the way live theatre productions evolve from start to finish. Parents/guardians receive $10 tickets to attend shows with their student. June–August, most Sundays & occasional weekday evenings.

Each fall, students from local middle and high schools attend special daytime performances of our final production of the season at heavily subsidized rates. A talkback with the actors follows each performance. Teachers are invited to a daylong Teachers Workshop in the spring prior to the production, which includes lectures and workshops led by experts in the field. An extensive study guide is given to each teacher to enrich their students' experience.

BROADWAY THEATRE CAMP

For 1–2 weeks in July, high school students with a passion for musical theatre study with Weston teaching artists and performing arts faculty from Burr and Burton Academy.

Students focus on learning material performed in the Weston season, developing their repertoires, and preparing for rehearsals and auditions. Sessions end with the opportunity to receive feedback from professional artists and perform on the Weston stage.

WESTON 2019 CREATIVE TEAM JORGE ARROYO (Lighting Designer) Jorge’s work has been seen at venues such as The Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, The Public Theater, Westport Country Playhouse, TheatreSquared, and others. He has designed over 50 shows at both the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center for artists such as Alicia Keys, Gabriel Iglesias, the Wayans Brothers, and others. He has designed for choreographer Stacey Tookey, three-time Emmy nominee for her choreography on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance, on her production of Moments Defined. He is an Assistant Professor of Lighting Design at Boston University. MFA: New York University

Anya’s most recent projects are a collaboration with Tei Blow and Laurel Atwell on Entry at the Baryshnikov Arts Center and Midsummer Night’s Dream at Triad Stage.

She is currently designing scenery and costumes for a new production of Balanchine’s Firebird for the Miami City Ballet. Anya teaches scenic design and color at UMass Amherst.
