Welcome to Spaulding High School and the 97th annual All State Music Festival. This is a wonderful yearly event that brings together student musicians from 48 high schools across Vermont to share their instrumental and vocal talents. In a world that focuses on competition, this festival is a true collaboration, a blending of the talents of many of our finest musicians, vocalists, and their teachers to celebrate music in Vermont schools.
Thank you to Spaulding music educators Bobby Booth and Aimee O’Meara for all their work bringing this festival to our school this year. Their passion for music and for their students is laudable, and the lives of our students, as well as the Spaulding community, are better because of their commitment. Thank you to the many educators from around the state for their hard work and dedication, as festivals like this cannot happen without them.
I hope you enjoy your All State experience and that it provides you with memories of music, friendship, and the joy of performing in such a remarkable event.
Sincerely,
Mari Goodridge Miller, Principal Spaulding High SchoolDear Participants and Guests,
On behalf of the organizing committee, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 97th Vermont All State Music Festival! We are thrilled to host this prestigious event alongside our dedicated team of music educators and enthusiasts.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the participants, teachers, parents, and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this event possible. Your dedication and passion for music are truly inspiring, and we are honored to be a part of this incredible community. We would also like to thank the staff and administration of Spaulding for supporting us throughout the endeavor of hosting!
We wish you all the best for a memorable and enriching experience at the 2024 Vermont All State Music Festival concerts. May your time be filled with joy, inspiration, and the transformative power of music.

The selection process for All State begins in January when pre-registered students perform in front of musical judges (or in the case of composition, submit original music to be scored). The festival would like to thank all the adjudicators who so generously volunteered their time to score the auditions, which provided organizers with the information needed to build the festival ensembles.

In addition to auditioning for acceptance into one of the festival ensembles, students can choose to audition for scholarship funds and the opportunity to be featured as a soloist during the All State Music Festival.
To do so, students prepare, memorize, and perform — (or in the case of composition, compose and record) — music for a panel of adjudicators. All performers receive valuable feedback from the panel of judges and are considered for scholarship honors.
The top rated student in each category scoring at or above 93% (85% for composition) receives a financial award and is invited to perform during the All State scholarship concert. The next one or two students scoring at or above the rating cutoff receive a financial award (with no performance opportunity). Adjudicators may choose to bestow honorable mention recognition upon performers at their discretion. Students recognized with honorable mention receive a certificate but no financial award or performance opportunity.
The Evelyn Springstead Scholarship is a $750 award presented by the Vermont Music Educators Association to a senior who has been accepted into a college music program and is a current year performance scholarship honoree. This scholarship honors the legacy of Evelyn Springstead, one of the founders and directors of the Vermont All State Music Festival, who also served as president of VMEA and who was present at every Vermont All State Music Festival from 1928 through 2003.
The Richard W. Ellis Scholarship is a $1,000 award administered through VMEA and presented by Ellis Music Company to a senior who has been accepted into a college music program and is a current year ensemble member. This scholarship honors the legacy of Richard Ellis, a big band era saxophone player who started instrumental music programs in several central Vermont schools and taught hundreds of students before leaving the field of education to found Ellis Music Company.
The Vermont chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) offers a scholarship to a high school senior who is pursuing a career in vocal music.
The Green Mountain Swing Band awards a scholarship of $400 to one member of the current year’s All State Jazz Ensemble.

The funding of All State scholarships is an ongoing challenge. The students who earn scholarships deserve more than they receive, but the current funding mechanism (a portion of ticket sales plus any other donations) is insufficient for generating the amount of money needed to give significant financial awards.
Several years ago, the festival established a long-term scholarship fund and is working to raise enough principle so that this fund can generate revenue (interest income) to help fund the annual scholarships. The fund currently has approximately $31,000. A list of donors to the endowment appears below.

Donations to this campaign will be added to the long-term scholarship fund (currently consisting of approximately $32,000) to help us reach the ultimate goal of building an endowment that can generate $5,000 to $10,000 (or more) annually, so that the festival can award scholarships that have a significant impact. The festival strives to have students playing all the parts. However, sometimes that is not possible, either because no students auditioned for a particular part or there were no student auditionees who met the quality threshold necessary to be invited. Thanks to these adult musicians for helping to fill out the ensemble.

The Vermont All State Music Festival began in 1928 as a gathering of high school orchestras organized by Burlington High School music educator Adrian Holmes and a UVM student named Evelyn DeBrune (later Springstead).
Over time, other ensembles (concert band, chorus, jazz ensemble) were added to the festival. The event was held in Burlington for many years with the support of the Burlington Lions Club.
Starting in 1980, the festival began to move around the state, bringing the annual gathering of student musicians to all corners of Vermont, with communities housing the students in local homes. From the 1980s until 2004, the festival was sponsored by the Vermont Principals Association.
The global Covid-19 pandemic resulted in two years of video auditions and no performances and contributed to the decision to begin housing students in hotels. With a limited number of communities able to meet the current hotel lodging and ensemble space requirements, future plans are uncertain.
However, it is hoped that the Vermont All State Festival will continue past its upcoming centennial to provide a valuable and memorable exprience to the student musicians who participate.

Dave Grossman is the vocal music director at Plymouth North High School in Plymouth, Massachusetts. At North, he directs two curricular choral ensembles, and directs the school's a cappella program, composed of four groups: Northern Lights, Spectrum, Menergy, and Girl Treble. Since starting at North in 2012, a cappella groups from Plymouth North have won competitions around Massachusetts, recorded and released five albums, toured and taught workshops to students in the United Kingdom, performed in the 2022 Massachusetts State of the Commonwealth Address, and most recently were named 2023 ICHSA New England Semifinal Champions and represented the region as one of 8 finalists in the International Championship of High School A Cappella.
A 2011 graduate of Ithaca College, Dave has taken his experiences in contemporary vocal music along with his choral experiences with conductor Mr. Larry Doebler and worked to weave them together in an effort to combine the musicality and emotional power of traditional choral music with the energy and accessibility of contemporary pop music. He was a founding organizer and eventual Education Director of the NE Voices High School A Cappella festival, taught in the inaugural summer of A Cappella Academy, and has led workshops and masterclasses at various a cappella events.

Sophia has furthered her impact as a widely sought-after guest conductor and choral clinician, bringing her expertise to choristers and choral conductors around the US and the world. Internationally, she most recently spent her time making music with children at La Escuela Municipal de Música y Danza de Cabanillas del Campo in Guadalajara, Spain, and young people from over 50 countries around the world at the Ingenium Music Academy in Winchester, England. This season, Sophia has been overjoyed to work with young people and music educators alike in Nebraska, Georgia, Missouri, Illinois, Vermont, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Connecticut, and was deeply honored to conduct the 2024 ACDA Eastern Region Elementary Honor Choir.
Sophia also serves as Conductor and Clinician for the prominent music publishing company Hal Leonard, through which she is delighted to represent new works and offer professional development opportunities to music educators throughout the United States.
Sophia studied music education, voice, and conducting at the Ithaca College School of Music, where she studied conducting with Dr. Janet Galván and was recognized as an esteemed alumna for her work conducting young people and celebrating the voices of children. A performer as well, Sophia continues to sing regularly throughout New York City.
