Dear Learners, I take immense pleasure in drawing you to the world of School of Foreign Languages at IGNOU. In an increasingly connected world, foreign language proficiency is more important than ever. Learning another language opens up new opportunities and gives you perspectives that you might never have encountered otherwise. Personal, professional, social, and economic considerations all point to the advantages of learning foreign languages. Learning another language is one of the most enriching experiences in anybody’s education. Not only is it essential for the Information Age that we live in today, but being able to speak in other languages gives you the power to reach out and communicate with people from around the world. The School of Foreign Languages (SOFL) has been established to give learners an understanding of different languages and cultures. Learning another language gives the learner the ability to step inside the mind and context of that other culture. Without the ability to communicate and understand a culture on its own terms, true access to that culture is barred. A person competent in other languages can bridge the gap between cultures, contribute to international diplomacy, promote national security and world peace, and successfully engage in international trade. The SOFL has already launched many language programmes and will launch a myriad of foreign language programmes in the days ahead. In this respect, we are confident that through the Open and Distance Learning methodologies, EduSat mediated dissemination of knowledge and online system of education delivery, the projected goal of quality education will be achieved. IGNOU Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees are respected and recognised all over the world. We have created Convergent System of studies, on- demand examination, walk-in-examination and anytime admission. Therefore, the idea of quality education anytime, anywhere will be a reality for learners from all sections of the society. “No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive.” - Mohandas K. Gandhi, Indian nationalist and spiritual leader. I wish you all success in your studies and pursuit of excellence.
