Surface, Deep and Transfer Learning
Adventure Awaits Physical Education programming, at VPHS, was redesigned this year with a focus on student interest. Adventure Pursuits, a newly added Physical Education class, has students utilizing collaboration, communication, and problem solving skills while building trust. Below, students had to navigate the hallways and move around obstacles by using team work and communication. Valley Park School District is in its second year of Project Based Learning (PBL) cohorts. Last year, we began working with PBL leaders, The Center for Excellence at New Tech High. New Tech High provides cutting edge professional development, training and support for educators and schools looking to transform their practices. Mr. Wood, a member of our second PBL cohort, created a wall to support the concepts and work his students will be doing with surface, deep, and transfer learning. Students classified tasks/verbs to gain a better understanding of these three categories. According to Professor John Hattie, “Surface learning is the foundation for deeper learning, transfer learning is crucial for success in the real world, and deeper learning is facilitated through inquiry teaching.”
