Message The allied sectors of Indian agriculture - livestock, poultry and aquaculture are gradually becoming sectors of buoyant growth and a potential source of better farm incomes. According to industry estimates, the Indian poultry industry in 2022 was valued at around $ 28 billion.

Aided by the increasing popularity of online services and growing online food delivery channels, the market is expected to witness a further growth in the next five years with a growth in CAGR of 8.1%. As per 20th Livestock Census report, the total poultry population in the country was 851.81 million, an increase of 16.8% over the 19th Livestock census, 2019.

According to OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2021-2030, consumers are attracted to poultry due to reasonable prices, product consistency, adaptability and higher protein and lower fat content. "On a per capita basis, the expected robust growth rates in poultry consumption reflect the significant role it plays in the national diets of several populous developing countries, including China and India," the OECD-FAO stated.

With such robust growth expected in the coming poultry industry in the next decades, the new publication “Poultry Creations” is expected to cater to the rising information needs of the sector.

Exploring Innovative Feed Ingredients as Alternatives to Soybean and Maize in Poultry Diets We have seen lot of volatility in ingredients availability for animal feeds in last 5 years. There are multiple reasons which can explained the scenario.

1. Production volume in India and globally. (GMO Vs non-GMO) 2. Gradual stable increase in demand for feed.

3. Use of grains and oil seeds for alternate fuel like ethanol and Dr. Uday Patel biodiesel.

These challenges lead to industry experimenting with alternate ingredients from standard Corn-Soy meal diet.

Energy source: With global energy crisis due rapid consumption of limited fossil fuel sources, alternative fuel source like

ethanol and biodiesel production growing very fast. While ethanol is mainly produced from sugar and starch, biodiesel produced from vegetable and animal fats. In both cases again it competes with energy resources for animal feeds.

On average every 10-ton grain processed for alcohol will produce 370 litre of alcohol and 3.5 tons of DDGS. And every 100 lit oil/fat processed for biodiesel produce 90 lit biodiesel and 10 lit glycerines.

Millets (Bajra, Ragi, Jowar), wheat and broken rice grown mainly for human food, but always available for animal feed when not fit for human consumption. The table below explains nutritive value of these. Inclusion can be total replacement with the use of ingredient matrix and depends on quality of grain for fungal toxins in millets, rancidity of fat in broken rice and tannin levels in jowar.

"Broiler Breeders Association North's New Leadership holds its First AGM in Karnal with Great Success" The new leadership of the Broiler Breeders Association North achieved a significant success with their First Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on August 5th, 2023, at Hotel The Rutuba in Karnal, Haryana.

Approximately 300 breeders from regions including Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand participated, showing strong industry support. Mr. Azad

Rathi, President of BBAN, warmly welcomed all attendees and stressed the importance of unity among members with the motto "Unity is our strength."

During the meeting, the association's executive committee highlighted their collective efforts for the betterment of hatchery and breeding farmers. They acknowledged making tough decisions for the farmers' benefit

Current “Newcastle Disease” outbreak in Poultry Introduction As we know Newcastle disease/ Ranikhet disease is caused by Avian Paramyxo Virus-1. It is an Endemic disease in India. There are around 22-23 different serotypes/genotypes isolated in different parts of the world and it is/was considered to have cross protection among the strains.

The more popular strains are Serotype-2, 7 and 13B. This 13 B strain of the virus has become recently more popularand it is considered to be responsible for recent severe Virulent NDV outbreak in many parts of India (mainly in North India).

Current Outbreak-The current outbreak of ND in North India started from Commercial layers mainly in Barwala belt in November 2021, causing around 40% average depletion in growing birds from 3rd week to 13 weeks of age.

-The duration of disease observed is 10 days to even 40 days in some cases.

-Luckily not many cases of NDV outbreak were heard in laying stage of birds as laying birds being more vaccinated and having better protective antibody titers against the virus.

-Sporadic outbreaks still there in layer and breeder growing flocks but severity of disease is somewhat less.

Diagnosis of NDV infection -The disease being per-acute, sudden onset of the disease and high mortality observed.

-Disease showed mainly Viscerotropic Velogenic outbreak initially, which post 10-12 days of outbreak, got converted to Neurotropic form.

-During Viscerotropic form-we could see severe Proventricular hemorrhage on tips and in some cases, hemorrhage was there in gizzard also.

-Later the outbreak came in commercial broilers causing around 50-70% depletion.

-March and April 2022, broiler breeder also got outbreak from 3rd to 12th week of age, causing around 10-15% depletion in female and 20-25% depletion in males.

-Earlier age the outbreak came; more depletion was there as disease got coupled with IBD infection.

Poultry Waste -to-Wealth in a sustainable way Almost 51 percent of the total meat production across India was contributed by poultry during financial year 2022. The challenges of effectively controlling the waste created by the chicken industry increase as demand rises. If not properly disposed of, poultry waste is one of the potential primary pollutants. Resolving these issues requires serious attention to managing poultry waste so that the environmental impacts of such a huge volume of waste are minimized. The wastes can still be recycled into valuable items, but cost-effective technologies have not yet been found.

NATURE OF THE POULTRY WASTE The poultry industry produces massive volumes of solid waste, including bedding materials, excreta, feed, feathers, feed scrap,

mortality waste, and waste water, including faeces, urine, residual medications and pesticides, as well as disinfectants for chicken coops and garbage's of slaughter house.

Phosphorus, other minerals, and several pathogens are abundant in poultry manure. To minimize risk and gain a competitive advantage in the poultry sector, waste disposal and management must be effective.

RISK WITH POULTRY WASTE Poultry waste contains high levels of nutrients and also electrical conductivity which can cause phytotoxicity to seedlings. Bacterial populations are mainly composed of members of the gastrointestinal tract, with few harmful bacteria.

Fresh chicken dung is rich in nutrients, but it can cause problems for garden plants, if not properly

It is also a more sustainable and eco-friendly way of disposing of poultry rubbish. The treatment efficiency of BSFL depends on the companion bacteria. Not only does it promote BSFL growth, but it also promotes development and manure reduction. It also increases the protein and fat accumulation of larvae (Mazza et al., 2020).

POULTRY LITTER TO BROILER DIET When three different types of poultry litter, Broiler's (BL), Layer's (LL), and Grower's (GL), are fermented by a mixed starter microbial culture of Aspergillus niger, Leuconostoc spp., and Candida utilis, the crude protein, nitrogen free extract, calcium, phosphorus, biomass, and amino acid content increase (Onilude, 1999 ). It may be fed to chicks, and studies show a correlation between enzyme supplementation and body weight, feed efficiency, and edible meat.

Kemin Industries has opened a new manufacturing facility in Verona, Missouri, to produce its Proteus line of clean-label functional proteins that are used to increase yield and enhance the quality of meat and poultry products within the food industry.

Kemin broke ground on the new building in November 2021, and on August 23, the company hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the 38,000-squarefoot facility. The operation is a US$70 million investment that employs nearly 30 full-time workers in the Verona community.

The facility, which will run under FSSC 22000 Certification and completed its first run under United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection on July 25, will manufacture Kemin Food Technologies – North America's patented Proteus line of clean-label, functional protein ingredients for a variety of meat and poultry applications. The Proteus portfolio of muscle-based protein ingredients can help food processors naturally

Fly farm spells success for women in Nepal’s village Himalayan nation. It is owned and operated by the women, all members of a "Sisters Group" in Bhardev, a small village with a population of about 2,500 people, 30 km (19 miles) south of the capital.

"It is a model green business to provide additional income to women without requiring them to invest all their time in it and is environmentally friendly," charity official Jeebesh Bikram Adhikary said. "We are experimenting whether the BSF can be harvested in the extreme cold and adverse climatic conditions," Adhikary said.

In a village a little over an hour's drive from Nepal's capital of Kathmandu, six women wearing yellow rubber gloves and surgical masks work in a shed, gently squeezing the wet larvae of the black soldier fly into small plastic containers.

Another woman slices pears and wilted vegetables to feed the insects, known more commonly as BSF, that are held in two plastic cages equipped with thermal panels for artificial light and heat to maintain the required temperature inside the tin-roofed 800-squarefoot shed. The protein-rich insect eggs are dried and processed into feed for fish, chicken and pigs, and will sell at 70 Nepali rupees (about $0.55 cents) a kilo.

Union Minister Smriti Irani Unveils IB Group's Rs 160 Crore Poultry Feed Plant and Hatchery Unit in Uttar Pradesh

Hon’ble Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani inaugurating IB Group's Poultry Feed plant and Hatchery unit at Amethi and IB Group founder Sh. Bahadur Ali present on the occasion.

On 25th August 2023, Union Minister Smriti Irani inaugurated a poultry feed plant and hatchery unit, which has been set up by IB Group at Amethi, Uttar Pradesh with an investment of Rs 160 crore.

Established in 1985, Chhattisgarhbased IB Group has a presence in hatcheries, broiler and layer breeding, genetic research and poultry diseases diagnostic, livestock feed (poultry, fish and shrimp), soyabean extract, edible oil and chicken processing. The group posted a turnover of Rs 7,782 crore in Fy22.

Spread across 12 acres, the newly commissioned plant of IB Group has been established at Jagdishpur in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh. It has the capacity to produce 600 tonnes of poultry feed per day and

3 lakh broiler chicks per day, the company said in a statement.

With the inauguration of the new plant, IB Group now has 5 poultry feed plants, having a total capacity to produce 5,800 tonnes of poultry feed per day. It also has 6 hatcheries.

According to the statement, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani said, "I would like to thank IB Group for setting up the largest poultry feed plant of Uttar Pradesh in Amethi, which is far from Chhattisgarh.

“For the growth of the country's GDP, it is imperative to strengthen the poultry industry. I am hopeful that

with technical support to young and talented farmers here, the plant will make its own mark very soon," she said.

Group founder Bahadur Ali said the poultry feed plant and hatchery unit has immense potential to generate local employment.

The new plant will also benefit maize and soya-growing farmers of this region," he said.

With more than 15,000 business buyers from poultry, meat and feed industry from all over the world at VIV Turkey trade fair for Poultry and Technologies having three halls of exhibit space and more than 300 international and national exhibitors, according to expo organizers, the turnout was exceptional and the feedback from attendees has been extremely positive regarding the education programs and time spent on the trade show floor.

This event focused on Innovation- bringing together buyers and sellers of the latest technology of products and services to make trade visitors business successful.

This year a good number of Indian delegates representing the nation's equipment manufacturers, feed millers, poultry breeders and pharmaceutical companies attended VIV Turkey in Istanbul, Turkey. According to the Indian delegation, the visit to VIV Turkey was informative and certainly worthwhile. Delegates took the note of the latest innovations in terms of equipment and logistical organization and see how the technologies could apply at Indian poultry producer level as some of these innovations could well be adopted by Indian poultry producers.
