Foreword

Since its inception in 1860, The Open Championship has thrived as one of just four annual major championships. The Open is the only major not held on U.S. soil, typically held in the United Kingdom’s Scotland or England. Just twice has it ever been held on Irish soil. The 80th Open was held at Royal Portrush in 1951. 68 years later in 2019, The 148th Open returned to Northern Ireland. In 2024, The Open returns for the 153rd time, and just the third time, to Royal Portrush in County Antrim.

Voyages.golf is proud to be an Authorised Provider for The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. Join the action and watch history unfold in July 2025 with one of three carefully curated itineraries. Play golf at some of the world’s most iconic links golf courses, have a pint of Guinness, and enjoy some of that famous Irish hospitality with truly memorable ‘craic’ (great time). We have various packages & tours which have been carefully curated to ensure your experience is cherished for years to come. Read on and discover your Ireland Experience.

Golf in Ireland

Golf has deep roots in Ireland, dating back to the 19th century when the sport gained popularity among the aristocracy and elite. The Royal Curragh Golf Club, established in County Kildare in 1852, is recognized as Ireland’s oldest golf club, showcasing the country’s early affinity for the game. The sport quickly spread across the island, with the establishment of prestigious clubs such as Portmarnock Golf Club in 1894, solidifying Ireland’s reputation as a golfing destination.

The early 20th century witnessed the emergence of legendary Irish golfers, including Harry Vardon and Fred Daly, who achieved international acclaim. Ireland’s contribution to the golfing world was further underscored by the hosting of the first-ever Irish Open in 1927, a tournament that has since become a prominent fixture on the European Tour.

In recent decades, Ireland’s golfing landscape has undergone a renaissance, spurred by iconic courses like Ballybunion, Royal Portrush, and the K Club. The island’s breathtaking landscapes, marked by dramatic coastal cliffs and lush greenery, have made it a sought-after destination for golf enthusiasts worldwide. The staging of major championships, such as The Ryder Cup at The K Club in 2006 and The Open Championship’s return to Royal Portrush in 2019, has firmly established Ireland as a premier golfing destination, blending rich history with world-class courses.
