A Short History

The history of the Iberian Peninsula is a complex tapestry woven with threads of ancient civilizations, conquests, and cultural exchanges. From the early settlements of Celtic and Iberian tribes to the Roman conquest, Islamic rule in Al-Andalus, and the Christian Reconquista, the region has seen diverse influences shape its identity over millennia.

During the Age of Discovery, Spain and Portugal emerged as major maritime powers, venturing into the unknown and establishing vast colonial empires across the globe. However, the subsequent decline of their imperial influence in the 17th and 18th centuries marked a period of economic and political turbulence.

In the modern era, both countries experienced periods of dictatorship before transitioning to democracy. Today, Spain and Portugal are vibrant democracies known for their rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and thriving tourism industries.

As for golf, its popularity surged in the Iberian Peninsula during the 20th century, particularly with the rise of tourism. The region’s favorable climate and picturesque landscapes made it an ideal destination for golf enthusiasts. This development has not only boosted tourism but also contributed to the economic growth of local communities, adding a new dimension to the peninsula’s recreational offerings.
