Growing up, I was obsessed with fashion, which was unfortunate because I went to a school where I had to wear a uniform. But I found other ways to express my creativity — my accessories. I would buy bold, dangly earrings and wear colorful scarves and socks. I would layer silver bangles upon bangles up my arm to the point that my teachers could hear me coming down the hallway, all so I could express how I was more than my uniform. I looked and sounded loud despite my navy cords and white polo.

And though I loved putting together these outfits, I never could have had the vision, creativity or the patience to create them from scratch. The seven Stephens College designers highlighted in this week’s photo-driven feature (Page 8) have all of the above. They make their visions come to life, and some of them will see their designs walk down the runway at next week’s fashion show. Photographer Madison Stringfellow shot portraits of these designers in their creative spaces. Each designer’s collection draws inspiration from different aspects of their lives. Fashion is personal, after all.

These women have a story to tell, and they tell it through fabric and thread.

Although some are motivated by activism, others are inspired by their favorite places and people. Regardless, the talent and creativity are present in these designs. And much like my days of crazy socks and bold earrings, the designers are channeling their creativity into what they put out in the world.

Diving deeper into sustainability MU and the city share information on sustainability efforts around Columbia On April 9, MU’s Sustainability Week kicked off a slew of events aimed at educating students on how to be more environmentally conscious in their everyday lives. In recent years, the university and the city of Columbia have focused on increasing public awareness about sustainable living and recycling. The MU and Columbia sustainability offices help sort out what this all means for you.

MU’s energy system was awarded System of the Year for 2017 by the International District Energy Association and MU is the only university to win the award twice, also being selected in 2004. MU’s energy conservation program has saved over $85 million since it began in 1990.

What is sustainability?

How do I know what can be recycled on campus?

The most common definition, according to Raghu Raghavan, MU’s sustainability office manager, comes from the UN-established Brundtland Commission: “Sustainable development is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Raghavan says higher education tends to focus on natural resource and material management.

What does material management mean?

The MU Sustainability Office put together a helpful guide for those confusing instances when a student might be unsure if that Starbucks coffee with a recycling symbol on the bottom of it goes in the recycle bin or trash.

Hint: it’s the trash. Paper coffee cups cannot be recycled on MU’s campus, but the plastic lids are recyclable.

How can students be more sustainable?

Sustain Mizzou, says there are various ways to reduce your waste footprint including, “using things that are reusable, such as water bottles or bags or even doing public transportation or choosing to bike or walk.” Tyminski added students can be more aware about their food’s source and how it is grown to increase sustainability efforts.

What can I recycle around Columbia, and how can I find out when my recycling and trash will be picked up?

The city of Columbia has a free app, COMO Recycle and Trash, that allows users to type in their address and receive a recycling and trash collection schedule.

The app also has a search function that allows users to search if an item can be recycled, and if it can be, provides several locations where users can go to recycle.

Ben Kreitner, the waste minimization coordinator for the Columbia Office of Sustainability, says he keeps the city’s website as a “primary source of information so that if someone wants to get into the weeds with all the details, they could go to the website.”

What’s next for the city of Columbia?

In June 2017, Mayor Brian Treece signed on to Climate Mayors, meaning that Columbia would adopt the standards of the Paris Climate Agreement after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would exit the agreement. A task force has been formed to discuss a new climate action and adaptation plan, and there will be a public hearing in May. Kreitner says the city is trying to involve business owners and the community. He says this is to involve the community in shaping the best methods for greenhouse gas reduction in Columbia.

The Clothing Closet offers gender-affirming apparel During MU’s Pride Month, learn more about a local charity dedicated to helping LGBTQ youth in need BY CAMERON R. FLATT The Center Project is an organization dedicated to assisting mid-Missouri’s LGBTQ community. Its Clothing Closet program aims to provide genderaffirming clothing and materials to those in financial need.

The aim of the Closet is to help people who have been kicked out of their homes after coming out. Nationwide, around 40 percent of all homeless youths are LGBTQ, according to UCLA’s law school. According to the most recent study from the Missouri Balance of State, a state organization committed to ending homelessness, mid-Missouri has about 95 homeless youths.

Bryan Mink, MU political science major, co-founded and co-directs the Clothing Closet with friend Cole Young. They saw the project as a way to immerse themselves in the local LGBTQ community. Originally, they ran it out of Young’s garage before The Center Project got involved about four months later.

Mink says the Closet has provided over 1,000 articles of clothing to at least 200 people since the program began in 2016. While the organization’s clientele is predominately local, it has provided clothing, free of shipping costs, to people across the U.S. The Closet also provides transgender people with transitional materials such as binders, which compress breast tissue, and packers, which create the shape of male genitalia.

“A lot of the reactions we’ve gotten have been very positive from people who’ve found clothing that’s changed their lives and made them more confident,” Mink says.

Kace Rosenberg, a Clothing Closet client, says they appreciate that members of the transgender community run the Closet. “In my opinion, (members of the transgender community) are able to go freely to the Clothing Closet and not be judged for anything.”

In the future, the Closet directors hope to find space for their already overflowing number of products and find enough masculine clothing. Mink says boxes of donated clothes often contain four times more feminine items.

There are no qualifications to receive clothing from the Closet, but clients are asked to donate clothes in return. Other donations come from clothes dropped off at MU’s LGBTQ Resource Center, campus clothing drives and The Center Project. The Closet is open for walk-ins or by appointment via The Center Project’s website or the Closet’s Facebook page.

Stop, and eat the roses Local experts explain why garden-grown garnishes are all the rage When we think about our favorite foods, what comes to mind could be anything from avocado toast to poke bowls. But with spring around the corner and flowers soon to be in bloom, you might consider adding edible flowers to the list.

According to Whole Foods Market, “floral flavors” are the most anticipated food trend of 2018. We typically think about flowers on our tables in vases, not on plates, but in reality, these plants can add an entirely new element to food — they add different textures and depth to a dish, Lesleighan Cravens, floral design instructor at MU, writes in an email.

“They seem to make already beautiful dishes even more extravagant,” she writes.

Brandon Vair, owner of Meriwether Café and Bike Shop in Rocheport, agrees with Cravens that flowers bring extra flair to a dish.

“We are a big proponent of eating with your eyes first,” Vair says, and flowers add that wow factor to the appearance of any dish.

Each flower has a different flavor to offer. Some, such as citrus blossoms, are fruity; others, such as bee balm, are minty. It all depends on the type of flower and the person’s taste buds, Cravens writes. For this reason, edible flowers can be used in an array of dishes.

Whether they’re garnishing pastries, tossed in salads or infused in teas, they add their own subtle flavor.

When trying to incorporate floral flavors, using the actual plant rather than artificial extracts is more difficult; however, the payoff is greater, Vair says.

Because extracts are mixtures of various ingredients, the taste of the dishes that contain them can go from slightly floral to straight up soapy quickly. This is why Vair says he prefers working with the real deal.

“The actual flower has a little more delicateness,” Vair says. “It’s an accent flavor rather than a dominant flavor.”

Vair uses locally grown chrysanthemums, mini orchids, nasturtiums and hyssops at his cafe.

Most of the flowers Vair incorporates into his cooking are used for pastry purposes. They adorn the tops of cakes to beautify the dessert and add to its flavor. When not being used as garnish, edible flowers are incorporated directly into the cafe’s desserts, such as the Rose and Hibiscus Shortbread.

Some other popular flowers for cooking are roses, pansies, lavender, violets and begonias, Cravens writes.

Storing flowers prior to use is similar to how you would store regular produce — in the refrigerator. Other varieties can be stored submerged in water. You should keep them away from ripe fruits and vegetables, though, because they are sensitive to ethylene exposure, Cravens writes. Ethylene is the gas emitted by

ripe fruits and vegetables. The flowers also need to be washed and cleaned before consumption.

Both Cravens and Vair agree that when using flowers as ingredients, it is essential to remember that not all types are edible. Some, such as baby’s breath and daffodils, are actually toxic. To

ensure safety, choose edible flowers that are free from herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers.

“Make sure you know where these flowers are coming from and what parts are in fact edible,” Cravens writes. Both Vair and Cravens say using a source you trust is important.

POPULAR PICKS Edible flowers aren’t only reserved for the five-star chefs of the world; these common choices can be grown in your backyard.

Borage Available in a variety of bright shades, borage brightens up both your garden and plate and provides cucumber flavors.

Lavender Good for sweet and savory dishes, lavender is a versatile addition.

Pansies With their light, floral flavor, pansies work well as a garnish for salads.

Roses Although not every flower used at Meriwether Café and Bike Shop is edible, the Rose and Hibiscus Shortbread includes florals for both flavor and flair.

Although each rose varies in taste, the flower can be used to flavor honey, sorbet or a summery drink.

Symbiosis in small business Local trades supporting each other is the CoMo way

MidMo Soap Company uses tallow from Barred Owl Butcher & Table in its soaps.

As National Small Business Week approaches at the end of the month, Columbia’s support for its local businesses is already alive and well through the collaborations of restaurants, artists and vendors. Several local businesses currently work together to create and sell products that come from and benefit the community.

“It really builds us all up,” says Ayla Pratte, owner of Amplified Productions.

“I think everybody who lives here in Columbia knows we kind of have a special thing here in the Midwest.”

Bluestem Missouri Crafts Supporting local artists Ruth Walker, a former partner of Bluestem, has been selling her hand-felted hats at the shop since the mid-’90s. The gallery features work from about 15 to 20 Columbia-based artists.

Walker says that one appeal of the store is that it connects the customer with the artists. With each artist’s display, there is a card explaining who the artist is and how to contact them.

Collaboration is necessary because it’s how Bluestem thrives. Sandy Litecky, a partner at Bluestem, says the business was originally just for selling partners’ work, but the owners decided to give more artists an outlet to sell their art.

homemade soaps at Barred Owl Butcher & Table. The soap’s base is tallow, which is rendered beef fat and the closest natural product to our own skin’s oils. She gets the tallow from several places in town, including Barred Owl. Mooney is a believer in the “noseto-tail” school of thought — she likes to use every part of an animal, which she knew would fit in at the restaurant and butcher shop.

She hopes her products will increase people’s awareness of limiting waste.

“It made a lot of sense for us to kind of partner up with her and give her a chance to use more locally sourced ingredients and give us an outlet for all the extra product that we have,” says Ben Parks, co-owner and chef of Barred Owl.

In The Devil Wears Prada, antagonist and fashion editor Miranda Priestly iconically called out her assistant for thinking that fashion was a pile of stuff. Priestly might have been biased, but she makes a fair point — you really can’t disconnect from fashion. It’s all around us. It’s in our consciences, our cultures and our communities.

Fashion is an integral part of our lives, and it’s coming from people right here in Columbia. Some local designers are making an impact that extends far beyond clothing.

Vox wanted to know where this “stuff” is thought up, how it’s made and most importantly, by whom. While you flip through this magazine wearing your Under Armour joggers and Mizzou sweatshirt, we’ve been scouring the area for the next Stella McCartney or Vera Wang. Look out for them on the runways and on Ninth Street, because, you guessed it, they’re local.

These Stephens College designers incorporate style and creativity, and make a statement for equality, sustainability and, most of all, personality. They understand what it means to put on your favorite outfit and feel like you can conquer the world. They also get that conquer-the-world outfits have an effect on the planet. Fashion is bigger than ourselves.

Brown, a senior, aspires to become a designer and activist in the future. “I want my work to speak volumes to educate and uplift my community,” Brown writes. “One day, I hope to open up my own community center where I focus on the embrace, empowerment and elevation of liberal arts in the black community.”

Inventive inclusivity

Taking on the world of fashion is hard enough, but taking on a part of fashion that is underdeveloped is even harder. Tobie Roberts, a senior, is determined to create clothing for men and women with disabilities. She was inspired after seeing her mother and grandmother struggle with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, a disease that causes weakness in the legs and arms. The disease runs in the family, meaning Roberts is already dealing with its effects. In high school, she started a nonprofit called the Green Prom Movement. “This movement is to encourage the donation of evening gowns from pageants and proms to make these dresses and alterations more accessible for lower-income families,” Roberts says. Her sister struggled to find a used dress that fit her figure, which inspired Roberts to sew her own designs and start the nonprofit. For The Collections fashion show, she developed a collection of bridal gowns that she titled “Breathe.” It is based on the lyrics of Andrea Gibson’s song “Yarn.” Each gown is designed for a woman with a different disability. “My line features low necklines, hand-beaded applique and gorgeous silhouettes because every woman, no matter what, deserves to feel sexy,” Roberts says. She learned the art of hand embroidery and beading at the Chanel factory during her month spent studying in Paris in 2017. MU student and local fashionista Madison Lawson, who has an Instagram following as @wheelchairbarbie, is one of the models for this collection. Roberts’ designs make it so Lawson’s spinal muscular atrophy never has to come between her and fashion.

While more traditional college students take introductory courses such as math and science, freshmen at Stephens College jump-start their design education with sewing, drawing and textile classes. “I love being able to design because I can create whatever I want and break the rules,” freshman Caroline Lester says. As a young designer, she is challenged with finding a way to differentiate herself.

She says she believes that her creative worldview will be beneficial to her in the industry and in creating trends, such as the return of flared pants. Lester’s biggest inspiration is Coco Chanel and her classic designs.

Knaust became interested in the process of making clothes because her mom frequently sewed as Knaust grew up. The two teamed up to create her first whimsical homecoming dress. Knaust says she dreams of opening a boutique with custom bridalwear and evening gowns or starting a small shop with children’s clothing.

Architecture and shapes influence Fey Chavez as she creates modern and functional clothing lines for men.

“My passion for drawing led me to fashion design because it let me bring those ideas to life,” Chavez says. Her green and blue mood boards of earthy tones are a representation of her collection that she revealed in March 2018 at Kansas City Fashion Week.

As a senior, Chavez has already had three internships with small designers in New York City and a corporate position with PVH, which owns brands such as Calvin Klein and is one of the biggest corporations in the fashion industry. After a competitive application process, Chavez earned a position in the menswear technical design department and plans to return to the company after graduation.

Lockwood, a senior, is captivated by pop culture and films by directors Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson.

Her mod sketches are inspired by stories with female heroines and fashion from the 20th century. She spends many hours in the studio perfecting her powerful clothing line and always has the supportive company of her dog, Athena. Crafting an apron with her grandmother in high school led Lockwood to start a tailored, vintage shorts business and pursue her dreams. Lockwood has won a scholarship from the Young Menswear Association’s Fashion Scholarship Fund and studied at the London College of Fashion. Her professional goal is to find her niche designing for a creative company and to continue growing her business.

Madeline Buasri started drawing sketches in fourth grade and has immersed herself in the fashion industry ever since. During high school, she worked as a model in Kansas City to learn the behind-the-scenes of fashion and meet designers. Her most recent dress design is based on the idea of white sands and relaxation. The flow of the ocean and the glow of sunshine and tanned skin influences the collection. Buasri, a sophomore, aims for her garments to completely change how a woman feels about herself. She hopes to empower women through her designs and own a small boutique in Florida. “My biggest success is actually going to school and pursuing my dream because I am the first of my family to do that,” Buasri says. The competitive atmosphere of Stephens College pushes her and gives her an outlet to constantly create.

Patterned with a purpose Two Stephens College designers sew what they know BY CLARE ROTH Eight designers from Stephens College will reveal their fashion designs to the public at the 74th annual fashion show, The Collections. Seniors Elise Schinsky and Miranda Kling share the inspiration that brought their designs to life.

Although the designers have different visions for their collections, both are trying to express themselves in new ways that will move the fashion industry forward.

The Wild West When students started conceptualizing their collections at the start of the school year, Schinsky was thinking about the West. She’d just returned from a summer fashion internship in Colorado with the Leadville-based company Melanzana.

Schinsky says she was drawn to the turquoise and sterling silver jewelry she saw in vintage stores and named her collection “Ghost Town” after the abandoned mining towns she saw off the highways.

Her garments, which she says are Western-inspired with ’70s silhouettes and colors, feature different design and construction techniques. To make one of her dresses, she wrapped two yards of fabric around a trash can in her studio, pleated it and painted lines on it.

She also crocheted some of the tops, a skill she learned from her grandmother at age 16. “I found an old (crocheted) square she did, and I was like, ‘Yes, let’s do it,’” she says.

Schinsky says she cares a lot about sustainability in fashion and says her ideal customer cares about “art, outdoors (and) sustainable and ethically sourced fashion.”

The yarn Schinsky uses for crochet is Tencel, a fiber that comes from eucalyptus trees. Tencel is produced with less water consumption than a fiber such as cotton, Schinsky says.

Reformation, a Los Angeles-based clothing retailer known for its sustainable fabrics, is where Schinsky says she can envision her collection fitting in.

All-inclusive apparel Kling’s collection is focused on transgender women. Growing up with a younger transgender brother, Kling understands the difficulties of finding a correct clothing fit when transitioning.

She was introduced to the reality of this dilemma when she worked at a

bridal alteration shop, Nanu Alterations & Bridal Design in St. Louis, as an intern last summer. In order to create a custom fit to women’s bodies, she learned that dresses need to have more than just side seams.

“That’s when I figured out that if I do a bunch of seams, then I could take it in wherever I needed,” she says.

Along with a focus on all-inclusive fits, Kling’s collection, called “Norma Aurora,” draws inspiration from the northern lights. After doing research about the aurora borealis, she learned that in some cultures, people believe that the lights symbolize loved ones looking down from the heavens.

“It was a beautiful thing that kind of made me want to cry because I lost my grandma my freshman year here,” Kling says. “That’s where the name Norma comes from. I kind of combined two stories into one for my collection.”

Zoso brings the London band back into the limelight

Columbia will discover the ultimate Led Zeppelin experience this weekend, though it won’t come from the legendary rock band itself.

Instead, fans will be given a dose of nostalgia from Zoso, the band the Chicago Sun-Times called “the closest to the original of any (Led Zeppelin) tribute.”

Zoso, which formed in 1995, seeks to replicate “unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history,” as Rolling Stone referred to Zeppelin.

The group is not your average tribute band. Many tributes only recreate parts of the band they are covering, but Zoso takes a different approach: The four members emulate Led Zeppelin’s concerts in their entirety. Every aspect of the show — from the performance to the music to the wardrobe — is inspired

by Led Zeppelin, and Zoso doesn’t hold back when presenting its fans with a show as close to the reality of a Zeppelin concert as possible.

The Zeppelin sound Zoso was created after lead singer, Matt Jernigan, was told he had a vocal range similar to lead singer Robert Plant, who could howl at the top of his lungs then drop into a gentler tone when needed.

Jernigan and the rest of Zoso have reconstructed Zeppelin’s concerts for thousands of audiences the past 23 years.

On stage, Zoso sticks to the music it

knows best. Iconic songs like “Stairway to Heaven” and “Immigrant Song” headline nearly every performance.

Stage presence Led Zeppelin had its own unrelenting and unpredictable performance style during its heyday, and Zoso makes every effort to introduce elements of those live shows into its performances.

Jernigan, guitarist John McDaniel, bassist and keyboardist Adam Sandling and drummer Bevan Davies have perfected the movements their Zeppelin counterparts would make on stage during the rock band’s peak. However much Zoso tries to emulate Zeppelin, though, the bandmates know their places in regard to their music idols.

“On stage, we don’t think we’re Robert Plant or Jimmy Page or anything,” Jernigan says. “We don’t think of ourselves like that. Absolutely not.”

From head to toe To portray Led Zeppelin’s original members, it is a must for Zoso to get every aspect of the characters correct.

The hair is the same, the clothes are the same, and even the instruments are the same. Zoso does everything it can to match Zeppelin’s flair, all the way down to Jernigan rocking the loose, unbuttoned shirt that Plant made his signature style.

These imitations are all part of the band’s desire to match the look the original fan base wants to see. This dedication to the Zeppelin of old is one of the main reasons Zoso was described by the Los Angeles Times as “head and shoulders above all other Zeppelin tributes.”

For ANDREA KIMURA, life is about becoming the best version of yourself

P

erched in the corner of her office, Andrea Kimura balances carefully on a yoga ball as she discusses her start in meditation over 10 years ago. “At the time, it was a little bit hippie-woo-woo,” she says.

“Yoga and meditation was not mainstream. You were a little out there.”

Kimura assumes many roles at MU. As a health coach and educator with the MU student health center, she hosts one-on-one sessions to help students overcome personal struggles, teaches a Mindfulness & Academic Recovery course and guides yoga and meditation sessions. Serving as the advisor for student-led organization Breathe, Kimura has also worked closely with club president Christopher Shannon, who describes her as supportive. “Her passion usually comes off as bubbly, lighthearted enthusiasm, but I know that she is very serious about this,” he says. “It’s something she doesn’t just preach; she practices.”

While her voice remains calm, smooth and fitting for a meditation instructor, it’s hard to miss the excitement and dedication weighted in each of her words as she describes her life devoted to helping others.

What drew you to education and coaching?

I love working with students. Actually, I just love working with people. My goal whenever I work with individuals is to help them become the best version of themselves. And we all — at different areas of our lives or different times or different seasons — have struggles.

How do yoga and meditation help people deal with stress?

They are just another way to give people skills and allow them to go: “OK, how can I get out of my head? I am wound up so tight; I’m a type-A, OCD personality. I’m dotting all my i’s, crossing all my t’s, and I can’t think straight now. I just need to unwind and relax.” You can explore meditation and yoga and see if it works for you in your life and your body.

It gets you out of your mind. It temporarily puts it on the back burner. It will still be there. All those thoughts will come back, but then when you come back, you feel so refreshed. You feel like maybe you’ve taken a power nap.

What’s something you’ve seen as a recurring source of stress for students?

I honestly see a difference in the level of stress for students, and one of the biggest factors is the amount that people are plugged into their digital devices. We have so much connectivity, but it’s really a false sense of connection. Forget social media for a while. Call it a digital detox.

then they might possibly be self-medicating with substances, maybe using more alcohol or tobacco, chewing more, smoking more or using illicit drugs.

What’s so important is that I meet them where they’re at and ask what they want to do about it.

Wherever they are, wherever they want to get going, they are in the driver’s seat. Then we co-create a plan. We make manageable goals so that we can get to wherever it is that they’re going because we want that change.

Do coping mechanisms differ for each person?

What may impact you at one level may impact somebody else at a different level. It could be water off a duck’s back for you. For somebody else, it will stop them dead in their tracks. You’re like, “Why are you worried about that?” (It) just depends on the personality.

What’s your personal stress reliever?

I love cooking. I love the noise and the sound of the kitchen humming. And then knowing that afterward, we are going to sit down together and have a meal.

How else do you see people experiencing stress?

Very rarely do I pull on one topic and stress is not related in there. If individuals are having stress, they are most likely also having sleep issues. If individuals are having a difficult time managing those emotions,
