I attended a Christian elementary school until I was 12 years old, and there were some strict guidelines when it came to messing with alternate spirituality. A lot of my classmates weren’t allowed to go trick-or-treating on Halloween because it was “the devil’s holiday,” and my parents were advised to not let my brother and me read Harry Potter books as they condoned witchcraft. Thankfully, my parents didn’t follow that advice and let us enter the world of witchcraft and wizardry anyway. It wasn’t until my sixth-grade teacher caught me reading The Da Vinci Code during recess that a call was made to my mom with concern that I was delving into non-Christian territory.

Spirituality is deeply personal and can mean something different to everyone.

Abi Dussetschleger, a high school student, deals with her own spiritual questions through Hearthfires, a group for mid-Missouri pagans. On the pages of this week’s feature (Page 6), you’ll meet Abi and others in Columbia who deal with the negative stigmas surrounding paganism, their chosen spirituality.

There are two large pagan groups in Columbia: Hearthfires and the Conclave of the Craft, which is a local Wiccan church. It has about 15 members and is focused on a greater acceptance of paganism. The Earth-based religion is deeply connected to nature but is still surrounded by negative stereotypes.

When we planned this feature, we weren’t thinking of its timing being so close to Easter. But talking with community members about their alternate spirituality — and working to better understand our neighbors — is a worthy pursuit any time of year.

Backyard botanicals Go from simple garden to thriving ecosystem by growing indigenous plants

BY TYNAN STEWART Although it’s counterintuitive, a healthy garden is one with a lot of insects. It’s also the most ecologically responsible.

The benefits of native plants add up to what author and entomologist Douglas Tallamy calls the gardener’s chance to make a difference. In his book Bringing Nature Home, he describes the planting of native species as a literal “grassroots solution to the extinction crisis.”

Due to the intensity of human colonization, “it will be the plants that we use in our gardens that determine what nature will be like 10, 20 and 50 years from now,” Tallamy writes.

It might sound like a daunting task, but fear not. Take the advice of Carol Davit, head of the Missouri Prairie Foundation and its Grow Native! program: Start small, and don’t worry if it’s not perfect.

Plant with purpose “Your choice of plants should reflect what you want from your garden,” says Troy Cox, the owner of SunRise Gardens in Columbia.

For Cox, biodiversity is one goal. He has transformed his 6-acre property into a native wildlife sanctuary, allowing him to observe foxes, coyotes, bobcats, turtles and six species of snake — not to mention

most of the birds in his Birds of Missouri Field Guide.

First, decide what you hope to attract.

If it’s hummingbirds, use red tubular flowers such as cardinal flower. If it’s monarch butterflies, you’ll need a variety of milkweed for the caterpillars.

Try a rain garden If your goal is water conservation, a rain garden can do it with style.

These gardens are planted in shallow depressions that allow rain to collect and soak into the ground. Cox says it’s an ideal way to keep water on your property that would otherwise become runoff.

You’ll need to pick native plants that are adapted to sitting in water, such as swamp milkweed, which has vibrant pink flowers and also attracts monarchs.

Bring the prairie home You can help revitalize a vanishing Missouri ecosystem with a prairie garden.

Becky Erickson grows native plants for the Hawthorne Chapter, Columbia’s branch of the Missouri Native Plant Society. She recommends diverse flowers paired with prairie dropseed or sideoats, rather than non-native turf grasses such as fescue, Bermuda grass or zoyisa.

Native prairie grasses also require less water than popular turf grasses, whose shallow roots can’t reach water stored deep in mid-Missouri’s soil.

During the 2012 drought, Erickson says the flowers in her prairie garden still bloomed while the fescue in her yard went dormant.

Block party Two local experts help smooth over the tricky task of choosing the type and SPF of your sunscreen

Whether you’re heading to Lake of the Ozarks, hitting the MKT Trail or wandering through MU’s campus-wide botanical garden, there’s one thing you should have on hand (and face and body): sunscreen. On a scale of 11, the UV index for mid-Missouri has already climbed from one to three since January.

In April, it’ll jump to five, and by June, seven. Here are some tips to keep the effects of those dastardly rays at bay.

All day, every ray UVA rays, a subtype of UV rays, contribute to premature skin aging and wrinkling. They can also penetrate glass.

So though you might not think the time you spend driving to work counts against your skin, it does. It might not “add up” in a mathematical sense, says dermatologist Kimberly Cayce of DeSpain Cayce Dermatology Center and Medical Spa in Columbia, but every minute you’re exposed to UV rays without protection takes a toll on your skin. Just because you don’t see damage now doesn’t mean you won’t regret it later.

Let’s get physical If you’re ready to up your sunprotection game, the first step is choosing between the two classes of sunscreen — physical and chemical.

Physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, and skincare professionals recommend them over their chemical counterparts. These two ingredients act as a shield, making them more effective at blocking UV rays than chemical sunscreens, which absorb into your skin and prevent damage through chemical reactions. Physical sunscreens typically cause less irritation, too, says esthetician Erika Walljasper, owner of Facial Boutique, located in KeLani Wellness Spa. To know you’re purchasing physical sunscreen, look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide on the label. Also, choose SPF 30 or higher, which can block up to 97 percent of rays, Cayce says.

Learn the labels If you see “fragrance” listed on the label, the product might do more harm 4

than good, causing reactions such as inflammation. Companies aren’t required to disclose the ingredients in fragrance because they’re considered trade secrets, and any number of chemicals could be lurking behind those terms. If you’re worried about sunscreen exacerbating acne, choose products that are noncomedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores. And if you’ve already got what you need and are pulling a dusty bottle off the shelf after months of disuse, remember to check the expiration date.

Move over, makeup The biggest secret to getting the most out of your sunscreen? Make a habit of using it every day. It’s not enough to merely rely on moisturizer or makeup, either. Even if it’s SPF 30 or higher, which isn’t likely, you won’t get the same protection you get from actual sunscreen, Cayce and Walljasper say. So buy some block, and incorporate it into your daily routine. You’ll thank yourself later.

bi Dussetschleger, 16, walks into the warm, incensed Heart, Body, & Soul. She has visited the shop a number of times, drawn in by its focus on metaphysical healing. There, she has purchased tarot cards, a chakra necklace, a buckeye for good luck and her favorites: four sterling rings, one embossed with the tree of life, one with a pentacle, one made with hematite to ward off bad energy and a fairy ring.

This trip to the shop is different, though. She is nervous. She is attending her first Hearthfires meeting for mid-Missouri pagans. October’s meeting topic: animal totems.

Books, statues and crystals surround her. On the wall across from the entrance, “Become who you are” is written in bold script. Members of Hearthfires, an organization for those interested in or practicing pagan religions, are situated around a small table in a room the size of a doctor’s office on the right side of the main shop. Dussetschleger’s presence makes the space feel too small. There are more than a dozen people in

attendance, which is a large crowd for a Hearthfires meeting.

“I can just stand outside,” she says nervously.

“Oh, no!” a few members of the group respond, assuring her she is welcome.

The attendees join her in the shop’s main area and make a circle out of the couches, love seats and comfy chairs that fill the store. The meeting begins.

“Does anyone have anything they want to say to get us started?” asks Taz Chance, a Hearthfires member and the president and high priestess of the Conclave of the Craft, a local Wiccan church.

Dussetschleger raises her hand apprehensively — a high school habit. “I’ve been noticing that I’ve been seeing a lot of squirrels lately,” she says. “How do I know if I’m just seeing them randomly or if they mean something?”

The group contemplates her question for a few moments.

“Well, we all see squirrels in the world,” Chance says. “The question is: Do you see them elsewhere? Do you see images of squirrels?”

“Yeah, you also have to pay attention to what you’re doing and how you feel when you see the squirrels,” Conclave of the Craft Priestess Amy Rhea says.

Chance says: “Another thing to consider is what’s going on in your life right now. Squirrels right now are saving to prepare for winter, so if you’re trying to

save for something, like maybe a new car, then squirrels might have spiritual significance for you.”

Dussetschleger listens intently, soaking up all the information the experienced pagans offer throughout the 90-minute meeting.

Witchcraft and alternative spirituality are topics Dussetschleger has been interested in her whole life.

Her mother, Lori Dussetschleger, practices Buddhism and works as a medium, interacting with ghosts and spirits. Dussetschleger once attended a medium session with her mother and says she felt her chakra necklace lift off the back of her neck. These experiences are what make the teen interested in spirituality.

Dussetschleger has been going through a difficult time. She is being home-schooled because of bullying and is dealing with depression. Maintaining her beliefs has been one of the hardest parts of depression for her.

“Whenever I get into low episodes, the depression implants thoughts in my head that this belief is stupid,” Dussetschleger says. “‘It’s fake. Witches, magic, it’s not real. It’s kid stuff.’”

To fight these feelings, she decided to make a change. “My mom’s suggestion of helping me out was to explore my spirituality,” Dussetschleger says, “so I guess if my mom wasn’t open about it, I’d still be gloomy laying in bed, crying every day.” Dussetschleger has sought out other pagans and information about Wicca, Continued on page 10

Paganism: from the Roman Empire to right now 3rd–4th centuries: The etymology of the word pagan is unclear, but it is thought to have been used

by Christians to describe people of the Roman Empire who practiced religions aside from Christianity. The term was synonymous with hick and made a mockery of pagans.

379–395: Theodosius I, a Roman emperor, persecutes pagan groups by destroying their temples. Also, his Theodosian decrees make Christianity the official religion of the empire.

5th–15th centuries: Pagan continues to refer to people from non-Abrahamic religions whose gods are presumed to be false.

16th century: Paganism experiences a revival during the Renaissance after documents are recovered during the fall of Constantinople in 1453, which introduced contemporaries to ideas from prior to the Middle Ages.

18th–19th centuries: As Romanticism gains traction, paganism begins to be seen more sympathetically and broadly, particularly due to the veneration of nature and perceived purity of ancient Greek civilization that is characteristic of the movement. Some 19th century works, such as Teutonic Mythology by Jacob Grimm, are influenced by pagan folklore.

Today: Although determining the exact number of practicing pagans is difficult, studies show that paganism is gaining a larger following.

Examples of pagan religions practiced today are Neo-druidism, Wicca and Adonism.

1921: Margaret Murray publishes The Witch-Cult in Western Europe, which hypothesizes that historic witches in Europe were, in actuality, practicing an existing pagan religion.

1979: Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler, a book about neo-paganism, is published. The New York Times wrote in a 2005 article the book “is credited with both documenting new religious impulses and being a catalyst for the panoply of practices now in existence.”

1954: Gerald Gardner publishes Witchcraft Today, which contains a preface by Margaret Murray. The book was introduced in the U.S. and has since been deemed a primary influence on the pagan groups that practice today.

Paganism 101 Local experts acknowledge the vastness of beliefs held by the different pagan paths; however, these are five tenets of paganism that hold true in many.

Animism

a path within paganism. She has since settled on not explicitly identifying as pagan, a decision she made in January. Instead, she hopes to follow a more eclectic spiritual path and gather information from as many areas as possible, meaning she will remain somewhat involved in the Columbia pagan community. In addition to attending Hearthfires meetings, she took part in witchcraft workshops, connected with other pagans over the internet and read literature such as 1001 Spells: The Complete Book of Spells for Every Purpose by Cassandra Eason. Dussetschleger is part of a trend of young people leaving behind traditional religion for unorthodox alternatives. According to the Pew Research Center, in 2012, 31 percent of people ages 18 to 29 said they have doubted the existence of God, up from 17 percent in 2007.

Dussetschleger’s decision to embark on an unconventional spiritual path as a way of finding herself is one that goes against the norm for the state.

In Missouri, 77 percent of the population identifies as Christian, which is 7 percent above the national average, according to Pew Research Center’s 2014 Religious Landscape Study. Only 1 percent of adults in Missouri practice “other faiths,” which includes pagan religions, as compared to 1.5 percent of the total U.S. population. However, Zachary Montgomery, a graduate student in MU’s Department of Religious Studies who has researched paganism through fieldwork and independent studies, says these numbers might be conservative because there are many solo practitioners.

Despite the low percentage of pagans in Missouri, Dussetschleger still had access to a sturdy local network to guide her. The two largest pagan groups in Columbia are Hearthfires and the Conclave of the Craft, the Wiccan church co-founded by Chance.

Paganism goes public There are several explanations for how paganism made its way into modern public consciousness, but one theory starts with Gerald Gardner in England. In 1954, he published Witchcraft Today, a nonfiction book that discusses the history of witchcraft, and declared himself a witch. These beliefs and ideas were brought to the U.S. during the 1960s and melded seamlessly with the counterculture and New Age movements. The latter two social crusades focused on breaking from tradition as well as the connection to and conservation of nature, which is why it was the impetus for neo-pagan beliefs in America.

The umbrella term pagan describes countless sets of beliefs that can be both religious and non-religious.

Pagans are typically animists, which means they believe everything on Earth has a life force and is therefore significant. This contributes to pagans’ immense respect for nature. For example, Taz Chance, the president and high priestess of the Conclave of the Craft, says she sometimes talks to trees because she says she believes she can connect with them.

Pantheism Similar to animism, this belief asserts that everything shares the same divinity — in the ground, in our bodies, in rivers. Because of this, pagans are often conservationists, which explains why paganism and the counterculture of the 1960s combined so well.

“Anything that you can state about one (group) can instantly be contradicted by another,” Montgomery says. But common threads throughout pagan paths do exist. For example, they are often “Earth-based,” Montgomery says. This means they feel strong connections to nature and animals and see them as “imbued with divinity.” They also typically have conservationist values. “We try to leave things better than we found them,” Chance says.

Intimidation tactics Having only been practiced in the U.S. for 50 years, paganism is still misunderstood. Public misconceptions emerged immediately after its arrival in part because of the Pentecostal and Charismatic Christian movements during the latter half of the 1900s. Christian theologians began connecting forms of magic and New Age spiritualism, including paganism, to demons and Satan.

“This was sort of the counterargument to the 1960s New Age alternative spiritualities,” Montgomery says.

These misperceptions were then reinforced during the “Satanic Panic” of the 1980s and ’90s, a public fear that an underground satanic organization was ritualistically abusing and murdering children and animals. The reports of the abuse were investigated, but no substantive evidence was found to indicate that these rituals occurred. Despite this, negative stereotypes were formed, and discrimination followed.

This discrimination manifests in many ways. Chance recalls group events met with protest. A man, whom the group nicknamed “Sandwich Board Guy,” would don two large poster boards inked with Bible verses on his front and back and disrupt their gatherings.

Polytheism Pagans are often polytheistic, meaning they may believe in multiple deities. And pagans, depending on their sect, worship an array of dieties. For example, Seileach Corleigh, the president of Hearthfires, worships the Norse pantheon, while Chance worships the Wiccan God and Goddess.

Equality Although many pagan paths have a degree system or priests and priestesses who lead rituals, train other clergy and spiritually guide members, they still aim for equality; no one member is superior to another.

“That’s the hope,” Conclave of the Craft Priestess Amy Rhea says. “No one is, by nature, more legitimate or further along.”

Anti-evangelization Pagans don’t actively try to convert others; they view their faith as personal and don’t see it as their responsibility to tell people what to believe. “We don’t evangelize the way Christianity does,” Rhea says, “but if someone expresses interest, I’m not going to not tell them about Wicca and my experiences.”

Paganism is heavily associated with herbalism. When peers discovered Taz Chance utilized herbal remedies when possible rather than modern medicine, they were able to correctly conclude she practices witchcraft.

The Hearthfires hold monthly meetings at Heart, Body, & Soul, a Columbia store that sells resources for each “individual spirital journey — whatever path or tradition that may be,” according to its website. Many of the items sold there pertain to paganism. The topic of March’s meeting, when this photo was taken, was paganism and the law.

Another disparager would bring a camera to events to purposely take unflattering pictures of people or misleading photos of the crowd size. He would then publish these photos, including pictures of children, online with captions such as, “This is what ungodly people look like.”

Chance has faced harsh personal discrimination.

When she was employed as a full-time substitute teacher for students with behavioral disorders, word spread that she was involved with witchcraft and paganism. Five churches in the town organized a flagpole prayer outside the school where she worked with the intent to “bring her back to the light of Jesus.”

It drew around 20 people. Chance describes this experience as intimidating, and it left her worried about her and her family’s safety.

Discrimination also takes place in subtler ways. “I have gotten dirty looks,” says Rhea, a Conclave of the Craft priestess. “People have been short with me or disrespectful, and I’ll be like, ‘What’s going on with them?’ and then I’ll remember, ‘I wore my pentacle necklace today.’” In response, she’s stopped wearing pagan accessories publicly.

Andy Hirth, a lawyer who dealt with religious rights cases during his employment at the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, says outright discrimination claims are less common because it’s difficult to prove someone is being discriminated against because of his or her religion unless it’s accompanied by an explicit statement.

to practicing openly, is no longer as intimidating. “In the past, I worried a lot about it because of bullying,” she says. But being home-schooled and securing her spiritual beliefs has helped. “I know the gods and spirits are with me,” Dussetschleger says, “even if other people don’t believe, that’s fine.”

Crafting a community The Conclave of the Craft, the Columbia-based Wiccan church that Chance and three others founded, makes a concerted effort to build a community for pagans while dismantling public misconceptions.

Chance first encountered pagan practices at a very young age, around 4 or 5, though she never identified them as such. “I remember leaving cookies under the trees for fairies,” Chance says. In the mid-1990s, she started seeking formal training. She studied with a group called Holly and Ivy and gained priestess status with them. After more clergy training with a group called Dragonstone, she was elevated to first degree. A few years later, she was elevated again to second degree and became the group’s high priestess. She advanced to third degree in 2006.

While Chance was involved with Dragonstone, she studied with Susan Stoddard, another pagan priestess, and with her mentorship, they evolved Dragonstone into the group she runs today. Originally, the Conclave of the Craft went by the name Missouri

Conclave of First Temple of the Craft of W.I.C.A. The group originally had around 15 official members, and the number remains similar today. The Conclave aims to foster greater acceptance for pagans through community-building efforts, quality worship experiences and educational opportunities.

To cultivate community, the Conclave has established a number of funding avenues. “The clergy discretionary fund allows us to help other pagans in need,” Chance says. For example, one member was struggling financially for months, so the fund paid for her phone bill. Others have been given money for gas or groceries. “It’s just there to help out when we can,” Chance says. The Conclave’s members also have dreams

The fight to fight As with other marginalized groups, pagans have faced barriers within the military.

Pagan veterans have had a particularly difficult time obtaining the same rights as other servicepeople. A key player in this fight has been the Rev. Selena Fox, the senior minister of Circle Sanctuary, a legally recognized Nature Spirituality church in southwest Wisconsin dedicated, in part, to helping pagan warriors and their families. Fox founded it in 1974.

Her most notable work came during her involvement in the decade-long fight to add the Wiccan and pagan emblem of belief — the pentacle — to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ list of acceptable grave markers. Fox’s group won in 2007.

Fox was also involved in a legislative battle with Georgia Congressman Bob Barr in the late 1990s, which she calls the “Barr Wars.” Barr proposed legislation that would have made it illegal for pagans to practice their religion while serving, but the legislation failed.

The Rev. Tiffany Andes, who served in the Air Force for eight years, has also made inroads for pagan rights in the military. In 2011, Andes became involved with Circle Sanctuary. She trained to become a minister with the ultimate goal of becoming a military chaplain. After separating from active duty in 2013, she became a chaplain fellow at the Lexington VA Medical Center. This made Andes the first pagan VA chaplain in U.S. history.

She says she is especially proud of this accomplishment because she knows it will create opportunities for others. “I think it’s important to have as many voices at the table as possible,” Andes says.

Andes also works with Circle Sanctuary as its Military Circles Program Coordinator. The program provides support to pagan veterans as well as pagans currently serving on U.S. military installations around the world.

of owning their own property. “The goal with the land fund is to have enough money to buy a small piece of land with a building that can hold spiritual service,” Chance says. This will make the Conclave less reliant on public spaces to hold its events.

Additionally, the Conclave contributes to the community through its Companion Animal Outreach Program. “We, as pagans and Wiccans, kind of see animals, in a way, equal to humans,” Chance says. “We do our best to honor and respect all animals.” Members of the Conclave get involved in animal adoption days, raise money for animal shelters and even adopt rescued animals themselves. Chance now has five animals that are all rescues: three dogs and two cats.

Spiritual advising and counseling, land and house cleansing and blessings, and rites of passage are a few ways in which the Conclave provides quality worship experiences to its members. Shamanic path working, a journey to find an inner truth, is offered, too. “A perfect example of a shamanic journey is someone who’s trying to find their inner spirit animal,” Chance says. Through the direction of a spiritual guide and oftentimes, meditation, the seeker of truth will be able to the find answers to his or her uncertainties.

The Conclave also holds group rituals on some pagan holidays, known as the Lesser Sabbats — Yule, Ostara, Litha and Mabon. They occur on the solstices and equinoxes. On Sept. 17, the Conclave celebrated Mabon, which marks the beginning of Autumn, by holding Mid-Missouri Pagan Pride Day in Peace Park.

The event featured vendors selling clothing, jewelry, plants and books, educational workshops and both a Mabon ritual and a ritual honoring pagan warriors.

Mid-Missouri Pagan Pride Day started in 2000 and has been held annually with the exception of two years. “Its sole purpose is to educate the public about what pagans look like,” Chance says.

Igniting the future The president of Hearthfires, Seileach Corleigh, was a devout Catholic in her youth but grew distant from the church because she says she believed it mistreated women. “I’m old enough to remember when altar girls were a big deal,” Corleigh says. “There were quite a few people who objected, and it felt weird and wrong that they were objecting.” Some dioceses began allowing female altar servers to assist in the mass in the 1970s without explicit authorization from the Vatican, but this practice was not officially permitted until the ’90s.

Corleigh discovered paganism, something she had before only encountered in “fantasy books,” when she was attending MU in the late 1980s. After reading pagan literature, she discovered a bookstore in Columbia called Bosom of Ishtar, a shop similar to Heart, Body, & Soul, and the store’s owner helped organize group pagan rituals. In 1989, Corleigh helped found a pagan organization at MU called The Pagan Students’ Association, which later became known as Sacred Ways of Earth and eventually folded in the early 2000s. Corleigh and the others she met through the MU group and the Bosom of Ishtar gatherings performed rituals and worked on their spiritual journeys together. However, in the mid-1990s, the owner of the store decided to leave Columbia.

members should keep doing them on their own. From that desire to keep the rituals and community alive, Hearthfires was born in the late 1990s.

In addition to the monthly meetings at Heart, Body, & Soul, Hearthfires provides pagans with a supportive and active digital community. There is a Facebook page for Hearthfires with over 300 members.

“The internet and social media have provided a lot of other ways for people to connect other than physical meetings,” Corleigh says. Corleigh still sees the value in face-to-face contact, but she also says that the internet and social media can facilitate connections for solo practitioners who are having trouble becoming a part of the pagan community.

Corleigh, who has been president for 15 of the group’s 20 years, is looking to retire from her position as president of Hearthfires soon but is having trouble finding a successor. The work the group does is vital in creating a better community for pagans. However, without leadership, organizations such as Hearthfires can’t exist. “I think that’s very important in the pagan community, to have a sense of generations and a sense of continuance,” Corleigh says. “Things do have their beginning and their maturation and their end, but it doesn’t have to end completely. It can change. It doesn’t have to stop.”

To a rosé rookie, the salmon-hued, fruity-flavored wine is nothing more than the finicky middle child of the grape family. Not refined enough to be a red, not light enough to be a white.

But as peak-rosé season approaches and the popularity of the pink drink rises, the misunderstood sibling is earning its place in cocktail culture.

Rosé is making international brands and local establishments take notice.

The surprise success of the tinted drink has inspired a zeitgeist moment. After Food & Wine branded 2018 the year of rosé, the marketplace is responding with creations such as Angry Orchard’s rosé cider and Hangar One’s rosé-flavored vodka. Rosé has been embraced by boozy brunches, commandeered by celebrity spokespeople and enjoyed by the elite and thrifty alike. We’ve paved your road to rosé with places to wine and explanations of why this drink is more than a punny Instagram caption.

For the trendsetter A one-stop destination for all things vino with a tasting room, A-Frame outdoor winery and Blufftop Bistro, Les Bourgeois Winery is home to a wide selection of rosé. For now, you can uncork a sweet blush bottle of Pink Fox, or you can wait for one of the winery’s upcoming rosé releases. In June, the Brute Rosé will return for $30 a bottle, and July 14 will see the release of a higher-end rosé as part of the 2018 Collector’s Series.

The fresh rosé selection will come just in time for the season, says Les Bourgeois tasting manager Sean Stringberg. He notes that the wine is ideal for warmer weather because it’s not as heavy as a red but contains some of the same flavoring and pairs well with a lot of different food.

Stringberg also points out that what was once considered its downfall is now potentially the aesthetic reasoning behind the wine’s runaway popularity. “I feel like people get really attracted to the color of it,” Stringberg says. “(Rosé) is a very pretty, bright wine.” Rosé connoisseurs, make plans now, because Stringberg says that two of the three rosés sold out last season.

Muses behind the music Four local bands break down the tokens and musical influences that inspire their tunes

BY JESSICA DUFFIELD Most artists could talk endlessly about their many musical inspirations. Now, Vox puts four local bands to the task. Hear about the belongings that hold the most significance in their journeys, as well as the soundtracks that have helped them along their music-making paths.

Bash: Chris Walker, Alex Gross, Wills Van Doorn and Zach Dolan Inspiration: Clark, the dog Dogs are a band’s best friend — or at least that’s the case for Clark. He technically belongs to Van Doorn, but Clark has always been an inspiration to this psychedelic-rock group of friends; they even wrote the aptly-titled “Clark’s Song” in his honor. Its lyrics affectionately proclaim: “You could ruin anything, and I wouldn’t mind. I could not get mad at you even if I tried.”

Drummer Zach Dolan and bassist Chris Walker were raised on Rush’s 1980 record Permanent Waves. “Then, myself and other guitarist Alex Gross discovered it recently and reignited their passion for it,” Van Doorn says. For this reason, Bash has covered “The Spirit of Radio” by Rush and drawn inspiration from the band in recent compositions.

Green Point Empathy: Alex Howley and Daniel Litwin Inspiration: A homemade doll Back in their middle school days, these friends conceived an animated YouTube show called “BandShow” — a project for which they produced original music and animations for four years. “The rival band in the show was called Green Point Empathy,” Howley says. “We have fallen in love with this name since then.”

Jump to their high school years in history class. “Our teacher played this video of people dancing to a Daft Punk song,” Litwin says. “We hadn’t thought much about them as artists, and once we saw that, it captured our attention.”

Fittingly, GPE names Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories as a muse.

When Litwin worked for an audio and visual company in Barcelona, one coworker’s mother made the doll. “It’s representative of a period when I fell back in love with my creative projects and felt validation with them,” he says.

The Hooten Hallers: John Randall, Andy Rehm and Kellie Everett Inspiration: Sage, crystals and a van Unable to settle upon one collective item that has most influenced them, The Hooten Hallers accounted for each member with sage, power crystals and its big red van — the wheels that keep them rocking and rolling from show to show.

But for a blues and rock ‘n’ roll group, The Hooten Hallers threw a curveball with its respect for the album Come to the Fair: Old Time Carousel Music Vol. 2.

“It’s the perfect combination of childlike whimsy and good, old-fashioned insanity,” Everett says. The album is reminiscent of “the unbridled joy of youth while simultaneously conjuring deep-seated feelings of uncanny dread.”

Slüsk: Ian Caldwell, Will Tuckley, Shelby Wilson and Hayden Jensen Inspiration: Computer A necessity for most contemporary musicians, the computer has allowed the band to book shows and record songs. “Facebook, Bandcamp and other sharing platforms have given independent musicians a place to promote their name, which has shown to be more effective than putting up flyers,” Tuckley says.

Die Kreuzen’s debut, self-titled album, best described as hardcore punk, has been a role model for Slüsk. “They were able to challenge the typical styling of punk music and shift it to a whole new sound, taking influences from post-punk and industrial music and later influencing the sound of grunge,” he says.

CoMo-based trio The Hooten Hallers embodies the genres of blues, rockabilly and punk and is equipped with guitars, saxophones and vocals.

Clark, a mini Australian shepherd, has been one of the biggest inspirations for Bash, a local four-piece band that even wrote a song about him.

Festival fairness

Female performers call out festivals to “Do better”

Who run the world (but apparently not the music industry)? Girls. In an industry infamous for its “boys club” mentality, women are still fighting for their rightful place on center stage. In recent months, the music scene has come under fire for its glaring gender-disparity problem. And despite the Keychange-organized and EU-sponsored Creative Europe Programme pledge for 50/50 balance by 2022, very few American festivals are reportedly signed on.

According to the Keychange website, of the 45 music festivals that have currently signed on to represent 50/50 gender balance on stage, A2IM Indie Week and NYC Winter Jazzfest are the only two American festivals currently participating.

With male-dominated lineups continuing to monopolize the festival circuit, female stars have begun to speak out in opposition. In early January, “Now or Never” singer Halsey tweeted in response to FireFly Festival’s schedule announcement, “Do better.”

Lily Allen commented via Twitter that the London-based Wireless Festival had only booked three women over the course of the three-day event.

Following years of backlash, Coachella has upped its female presence for 2018 and beyond, and other festivals are following suit.

Before Columbia-based Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival’s own lineup release, director Julie King opened up about the festival’s efforts in diversity.

“As a team, we’re united on the importance of equality throughout our lineup,” she says. “The biggest challenge is the industry as a whole is dominated by men.”

Noting the challenges that come with booking talent — such as navigating touring schedules, availability and budgets — King maintains that they remain strategic in choosing headliners.

“We (listen) to our fans and try to create a lineup that reflects what they want to see, (while) providing artist discovery in our selected genres of roots, blues, gospel, folk, soul, rock, bluegrass and reggae,” she says.

Meanwhile, The Blue Note’s local talent buyer, Pat Kay, says that, on a local scale, the persistent problem is a lack of female artists. “I feel like it’s a matter of options,” he says. “The issue is there’s not as much interest for females to be musicians.” For Kay, the band selection process is strictly about the performers. “Everything that we do here in terms of (choosing) bands is largely a function of the music,” he says. “And I probably book female-led bands more often than male-led bands.”

On both local and national platforms, there is still an obvious gender divide. But King says there’s a simple way we can all help to narrow that gap when the opportunity arises.

“There are so many incredibly talented women musicians out there,” she says.

“The best way to support them is to buy their music and go to their shows.”

Painting a successful career Three local artists weigh in on how to turn a passion for creativity into a career BY CLARE ROTH To all the young and emerging artists out there: Don’t fret. Here’s a guide on how to begin your career, as told by three local art professionals.

Madeleine LeMieux is the founder and director of Resident Arts, a nonprofit that helps artists build careers. LeMieux started Resident Arts in 2014 when she moved to Columbia after graduating with a master’s degree in art administration from NYU. At Resident Arts, LeMieux supports local artists and what she calls “emerging artists” — artists who don’t have gallery representation. In school, artists are taught to focus on the technical side of their work rather than on marketing themselves, she says.

But along with creating art, to build a career, artists should meet and befriend other artists, learn how to speak about their work and apply for fellowships, competitions and residencies. She cautions against living in a bubble. “I think a lot of artists have this idea, they’re like, ‘I’m going to make art for self expression, I’m gonna make what I’m gonna make, and I’m gonna do it in my basement,’” LeMieux says. There’s nothing wrong with creating sellable art to pay the bills, even if it’s not the art that you’re most passionate about, LeMieux says.

LeMieux says finding a network of artists is important, but it is equally important to put time and persistence into developing the artwork itself. “You can make mediocre work and everybody can know you,” she says. “And they’ll know you as the artist who makes mediocre work.”

Kelsey Hammond is a photographer and the artist behind Monkey Madness Designs. She teaches workshops at Resident Arts on how artists can successfully market themselves and also teaches a photography class at MU. Hammond creates greeting cards and paintings by hand. Her art is sold at Yellow Dog Bookshop, which she owns with her husband, Joe Chevalier, and at pop-up shops, which she started doing recently with a group of local creators called the 8th St. Makers Collective.

Hammond’s classes about marketing focus on social media literacy and photographing art for online marketing. Photographing your art is very important, she says, because if you don’t have good pictures of your art, online customers won’t be inclined to buy it.

Hammond stresses the importance of having an online presence.

“Your website doesn’t have to cook anyone breakfast,” she says. “But it does have to give basic information about what you do and who you are.”

If you don’t have an online presence of some sort, you’re missing out on the possibility of selling your work to online customers, she says. The goal of your online presence shouldn’t be focused on earning money but rather support. Your supporters can use social media to recommend your art to their friends.

This is how you build exposure and a community around your work, she says.

Hannah Reeves is an artist and the director of Sager Braudis Gallery. She attended MU for her undergraduate and graduate degrees in fine art.

Reeves says the majority of art she schedules in the gallery is from scouting art fairs, art blogs, studios she visits and Instagram. In June, however, Reeves and her team will take submissions from artists who want to be featured in the gallery for 2019.

When picking through submissions, Reeves says that along with the quality of work, she focuses on craftsmanship and preparation. Craftsmanship refers to the structural integrity of the piece from start to finish, whereas preparation refers to how well a piece is prepared to go into a gallery.

For example, Reeves says two-dimensional art shouldn’t be folded, have fingerprints on it or be placed inside a dilapidated frame. It’s better to have no frame than a poorly made frame that distracts from the piece, she says.

For artists presenting work in person, having a simple, clean portfolio with sheets of archival paper in between can be very professional and inexpensive, Reeves says.

Looking back, Reeves says she would have liked to learn how to better present her work as an undergraduate. She wishes she had learned earlier on how to cut mats and build frames and pedestals while she had access to professors skilled in those crafts.

efore Dustin Hawkins was a filmmaker, he was a computer programmer. Then he sold health insurance. Hawkins now works at KMIZ/ABC, Columbia and owns Retro Hawk Productions, which creates a variety of work, including commercials and short films.

Hawkins’ latest short, “Shutter,” is set to be finished by the end of April.

The short centers on two real women, Pearl Lusk and Olga Rocco. In the story, Olga’s ex-husband tricks Pearl into killing Olga by pretending to be a detective enlisting Pearl’s help on a mission to catch a jewelry thief he says is Olga.

What attracted you to this story?

I love the 1940s. I love the dress; I love the style; I love all the old classics.

For me, it’s like an ideal film. It’s got representation of two very strong women, and at the same time, it’s kind of just a neat story to tell.

Why do you feel this is a story about strong women if it’s about a man trying to destroy his ex-wife?

Because she overcomes it. In film, you expect certain reactions to things.

When someone gets shot, you expect them to fly backwards. Olga, the woman who got shot, literally just fell to the ground, didn’t really give out a big scream or cry. You want to talk

How do you go about making films?

I still do things the old-fashioned way with a lot of filmmaking. A lot of films today are like a sausage factory.

They’re just trying to crank out as many as they can, and they’re trying to make them as fast as they can, and they’ll take liberties. I don’t take those kind of liberties. They’ll just fix it in post (production). I’m a little more original and simpler.

What’s it like being an independent filmmaker in Columbia?

It’s a constant struggle, especially just starting out. You really have to have a continual passion for it. I’ve seen a lot of people who are really good, but they get burned out so quickly.

When people wouldn’t stop telling me I couldn’t do video production, I said screw it, I’m going to go to school to get it and do it. And now, I don’t make a lot of money, but I enjoy what I do. I love going to work every day, and I love my art.
