Welcome to our 2020 edition of The Vooyagers. We are very happy to be able to showcase our past year’s works. Being with our Vooyagers in their journey of self-discovery has been a pleasure for us, and now we’d like to share them with you.

A self-discovery journey is never easy. Difficulties, boredom, and even failures always go hand in hand with excitement, enthusiasm, and success. Discovering what we want in life needs that uneasiness for us to be completely informed about what to rule out from future possibilities. But in the end, it’s all worth the effort.

In this edition of The Vooyagers, we want to share the ABC of Passion, the basic and most important facts, details and stories about passion. First, we want to encourage our readers to start their own daring Adventure of passion exploration. Second, we want to inspire them through learning from other people’s Bio Stories. Third, we want to share our Credos in facilitating people to reach their dream and to live a fulfilling happy life through our services.

Last but not least, we hope to continually deliver the best contents that will excite you, trigger you, broaden your knowledge, and more importantly, make you to know us better.

#TauApaMaumu Press Conference and Inspiration Session

n August 31st, 2019, Vooya held a Press Conference and Inspiration Session. The event was attended by forty influencers, including Dias Kinanthi, an Indonesian diplomat who left her medical study to pursue her passion in humanities and social sciences, and Barli Asmara, an Indonesian designer.

The event was held to discuss about Vooya’s campaign, #TauApaMaumu, a campaign aimed to encourage young generation to push beyond their limits in self-discovery.

The first part of the event was a talk show.

Mr. Asmara and Ms. Kinanthi covered topics about their journey of self-discovery and how to pursue one’s passion among pushbacks.

The path towards their current successes is not a straight line. Both of the speakers have gone through difficult time and faced challenges in which their parents and teachers encouraged them to do something that they are not passionate about.

“In high school, I had to major in IPA (natural sciences),” said Ms. Kinanthi. “After that, my teachers felt it was natural for me to apply to a medical school since I was doing well. And then, unfortunately, I got in.” Ms. Kinanthi revealed that she stayed for four semesters before transferring to German Literature. She also talked about the language teaching jobs she did in college that made her even sure about her decision to transfer.

Meanwhile, Mr. Asmara expressed that he was worried about other people’s negative opinions on fashion school. But he pushed through to pursue it because he was sure that he wants to do fashion design.

“Since I was a kid, when someone asked me about my dream, I would always answer ‘I want to have a lot of clothes!’” He worked at many fashion businesses before he decided to create his own brand.

According to Vooya’s Program Director, Ms. Stephanie Wijanarko, designing one’s life story is an important part to find passion. A person must place themselves in the position of a protagonist to find out what path that they must choose.

“You need to have an attitude about your goals when you go to war,” Mr. Asmara added. “And before that, assess yourself.”

After listening to Mr. Asmara and Ms. Kinanthi’s journey of finding their passion, attendees took the PassionPerseverance Assessment to discover their own passion and how they respond to problem.

As the event was nearing its end, the attendees shared their feeling about the session and #TauApaMaumu movement. This event inspires the attendees to share about this movement and hopefully influences other people towards their journey of self-discovery.

5 Steps of Passion Discovery Journey BE HONEST to yourself

Being Honest with Yourself It’s hard to accept that our wish is not aligned with what is considered OK by society, or even parents. VOOYA INSPIRATION: BARLI ASMARA

It is not an easy feat being a fashion designer.

Although Barli was born in a family that can provide him with everything he wanted, he chose to start his own career from the starting point – a no one – to prove himself in front of his family. He wanted to change his parents’ perception about fashion industry, thus he took interior design and business communication as his major in college. He believed that with proper management and business skill, a fashion business can also yield.

ife is not always rainbows and butterflies and that is what Barli Asmara, a renowned Indonesian fashion designer, felt on the way to pursue his passion. From when he was a child, Barli has always wanted to own a lot of clothes.

This passion blooms into his determination to prove that he can do anything.

Barli was born in Bandung, March 3rd, 1978 as the last child of the family. He was close with his mom and grandmother and confessed that his interest in fashion was fueled by his grandmother’s occupation as a Sundanese wedding make-up artist who opened her own personality development school. His dad had opposed of his dream several times – wanting him to be a racer or police, any other occupation which are perceived as more masculine.

Barli Asmara started his fashion business with his college friend with only IDR 2 – 3 million as the initial capital. As his background wasn’t from fashion industry, the struggle to be today’s renowned fashion designer is even harder. He loved to draw, but didn’t know how to make clothes. In his struggle, he befriended several tailors and designer to learn to sew. That was how he started his own fashion label.

As life goes on, Barli became more and more known with his specialty in details – beads, pearls, and others. His breakthrough in this industry was when he was challenged as one of the participants in Dewi Fashion Knights’ Fashion Show in Jakarta Fashion Week.

Through this show, he became known.

Multiple awards were assigned to him as his fashion career grows and matured; he was awarded with The Best Choice Dewi Knights, AMICA Young Talented Designer Award, ELLE Designer of the year, The Best 20 Designer for High End Masterpiece, and Kartika Magazine Best Designer of the Year.

VOOYA INSPIRATION: DIAS KINANTHI

K

nown as the beauty-and-brain who is also active as a social activist, Dias Kinanthi was not exempted from hardship in pursuing her career.

Her journey in becoming a diplomat is not as smooth as everyone might think. For her bachelor degree, she took medical major in Universitas Indonesia. However, in her 4th semester, she found out that being a doctor was not what she wanted to do in her life. Just like other people who are lost in finding out about their life, Dias also felt restless – with what people perceive of medical major and the amount of money she had spent for her education.

However, with a determined heart, Dias decided to withdraw from the medical school and enrolled into German Literature major in the same university. Through this experience, she found out that she prefers philosophy, history, and social subjects. She graduated with cumlaude honor in her bachelor degree.

Following her achievements, she also graduated from Social and Political Science faculty for her master degree in 2016.

Looking back, her passion in social and political activities was ignited by her love of joining social activities such as visiting and teaching poor students who cannot afford education. The thing she was most concerned about is because she thinks that education is the basic need that all people deserved to get.

Now, Dias Kinanthi is working as a diplomat in charge of multilateral diplomacy in Geneva, Swiss. She is in charge of several United Nations organizations, such as WHO, ILO, and UNESCO.

nowing what you want in life can be difficult, but knowing what you want only later in life is such a shame. Too many people give up early in the journey of finding their passion, some never even considered looking. As a result, they tend to make decisions and choose careers that seem like the easy way out. In the long

term, though, they end up living their life with constant regret. This is obviously not an ideal life path. Imagine if one day you wake up and realize that you have been living your life the way you think you are supposed to, and not the way you want to. That would have been unfortunate, wouldn’t it?

The above bleak illustration is a good enough reason to invest in a well-planned passion exploration journey. By engaging in the process of experiencing and exploring the multitudes of career options, it will be easier for you to get to a clearer and much more effective path of finding your passion. This was what was in mind when the elementary students from Sinarmas World Academy embarked on an adventure like no other to Sydney and Gold Coast, Australia last March 2019. Young and adventurous, these lionhearted students were not afraid to explore the unknown in their journey of finding their passion.

to avoiding the miserable fate of living an unfulfilling life is actually to start early. Time is of essence when it comes to carving your path to self-fulfillment. Therefore, the earlier you start, the faster and greater chance you’ll find your passion.

At the mere age of no less than a decade, these students (aged 8-10) courageously flew to the southern part of the globe for a 10-day experiential passion exploration.

There, they had the chance to dive into the delightful of new multidisciplinary workshops and explored the picturesque landscape of Eastern and Southeastern Australia.

Students were literally knee-deep in marine life conservation. It can definitely be a daunting experience, delving into the uncharted territory of caring for sharks and rays. At the same time, it was also thrilling, knowing that they will come out of the experience gaining more knowledge and skills and the certainty of liking the path or not.

As these students began exploring different future career options at earlier age, they will have more time to explore further, in case the ones they have explored didn’t work out.

For instance, during their cross-discipline hands-on workshops, students were given the chance to experience Marine Biology at Irukandji Shark & Ray.

One would think that these students were too young to know what they were doing.

It would be regrettably pessimistic to think so. It may sound trivial to some, but the key

After getting the gist of marine biology though first-hand interaction with marine life, students had the opportunity to extend their interest in animal kingdom through the Zoo Keeper workshop at Australia Zoo. If the previous workshop allowed students to get wet, this one requires students to get down and dirty. With access to one of the world’s most renowned zoological and conservation facilities, students assumed the role of zookeeper for a day. From feeding and interacting with koalas and kangaroos, cleaning kangaroos’ dung, to making toys for the birds, it was up-close and personal with wildlife animals!

alternatives for students who wish to stay in touch with the natural world, but prefer physical science to life science. Analyzing the environment and ecosystem, learning about pipi shells and sandpipers digging for minerals, understanding the world around us in the most specific and scientific way, this is a whole other branch of natural science you can explore!

The two workshops were both part of the science field, but they were different in their own ways. As the workshops served as a comparative experience for the students, they moved on from them with the knowledge of what they do and don’t like. This knowledge is essential, as they pave way for a more systematic path to discovering their passion.

Case in point, if natural science proved to be fascinating, but day-to-day contact with living, breathing creatures seemed too alarming, students may find their calling in the activities in geography workshops.

This rather extreme sport that is similar to snowboarding involves riding a board across the sand dune while sitting, standing, or lying on your back or belly.

If having your adrenaline pumped gets you pumped and getting fit is your thing, then a career in sports and physical education may be a great fit.

What if after all that, you realize that natural science is definitely not for you? Don’t fret, because Sand Boarding at Stockton Bight Sand Dune will quench your thirst for something more adventurous.

Are physically demanding activities too much? Why not try your hands at something more domestic? Have a go at a Mystery Box Cooking Challenge at Sydney Cooking School like a MasterChef. mainly outdoorsy with live interaction with the nature, this workshop is very much indoor.

This provides students with a completely different outlook of the different career environments allows them to weigh the pros and cons of their future career options.

These children may or may not have found their passion, but by way of experiencing, identifying, and eliminating what they didn’t like, these students will have a better understanding of what they truly like.

This, is what will then be their one true passion.

However, even when they have known what they like, there will still be more exploration to do. Of course, this time will be different.

Armed with a clear-cut vision of their passion, they will then have the chance to gain deeper insight into said passion. Their exploration would then be within the field. Starting early has given these students a sure head start in their journey to a fulfilling and profitable career. Start now, and you can be like them, too!

CSI Forensics: The Science of Justice

O

ften times, crime and police dramas alike allow viewers to take a glimpse of detective and forensic work.

Real life crime scene investigation can be as exhilarating as TV shows, but solving crime actually requires much more than what you see on TV shows. Not only does it require the work of different people with different expertise, it definitely takes more time and effort than an episode of Sherlock Holmes or CSI.

When CSI arrives at the crime scene, they may talk to the first responders to see if anyone touched anything or gathered any additional information that might be helpful in collecting and making sense of the crime. If detectives on the scene have begun interviewing witnesses, CSI may talk with detectives so they can both investigate more effectively by following leads provided by witnesses and physical evidence.

Now, let’s pretend that you’re a crime scene investigator (CSI). A horrifying murder has taken place. The killer is still on the loose.

Their family demands answer.

What do you do?

Crime scene investigators’ main duty is to document the crime scene and collect physical evidence. Crime scene documentation is done so that detectives, forensic scientists in lab, and attorneys can have a detailed visual of the crime scene, even after all the evidence has been retrieved.

Arriving at the crime scene When a crime has happened, on-scene police officers or detectives will typically p.18

The documentation can be in the form of photographs, videos, sketches, notes, and so on.

Before getting into the crime scene, it is important that everyone involved in any type of crime investigation preserves the crime scene as it is. This is why police officers, detectives, and especially CSI who are in charge of the crime scene investigation need to secure the crime scene and even themselves.

To secure the crime scene, officials in charge set the perimeter and barricade the crime scene with barricade tape. This is to ensure the authenticity of crime scene and to avoid any evidence tampering. Then, CSI in charge of collecting evidence are obliged to wear special protective clothing to avoid contamination as well as cross contaminating the evidence.

This is when DNA is unintentionally transferred from one item of evidence to another. The protective gear also allows CSI to protect themselves from other hazardous materials at the crime scene.

Collecting the evidence Now it’s time to find and collect the evidence.

Evidence can come in any form. Common evidence a CSI might find at a crime scene includes: • Trace evidence (clothing fibers, paint, broken glass, unknown chemicals, drugs) • Impressions (fingerprints, footwear, tire marks, bite marks, tool marks) • DNA samples and bodily fluids (blood, hair, saliva, semen, vomit)

• Weapons and firearms evidence (knives, guns, bullet holes, cartridge casings) • Documents (journals, notes, phone books, phone records) While collecting evidence, CSI has to keep the significance of the evidence in mind. This is why each CSI unit has their own specific system of collecting evidence, tagging it, and logging it so it will be easier to identify evidence and recreate the crime scene later.

Before

Evidence has to be collected in a way that preserves its integrity.

This is why aside from wearing a protective clothing, CSI may use certain tools in collecting evidence.

Different type of evidence calls for different tools. For example, to recover fingerprints, a CSI may use brushes, powders, tape, chemicals, lift cards, and a magnifying glass.

To collect bodily fluids, a CSI may use use smear slides, a scalpel, tweezers, scissors, sterile cloth squares, a UV light, and luminol. CSI is also usually aware of the materials they are handling, too, so they may have biohazard waste bag at hand in case the evidence may pose danger to its surroundings’ health.

After evidence has been collected, it will be packaged in special evidence bag so it remains intact and uncompromised on its way to the crime lab. Meanwhile, evidence that entails body evidence (e.g. homicide) will be brought to a forensic pathologist for an autopsy to establish the victim’s detailed and scientific cause of death.

Back at the crime lab After evidence has been retrieved, it’s time for forensic scientists at the crime lab to examine them and look for clues that can link the crime to the perpetrator(s). As most clues cannot be detected simply with the naked eye and baseless assumption, examining it will also require state-of-the-art scientific equipment. This is where scientific experiments comes to play to help forensic scientists identify chemical clues from the physical evidence. Some CSI that have the necessary academic background may be qualified to conduct these experiments, but some CSI that do not have the credentials to do them will require the assistance of other specialists.

From fingerprint analysis to DNA comparison, evidence examination can range from simple database comparison to complex chemical tests. Most examination will require both.

Especially due to the overwhelmingly abundant and specific evidence obtained from the crime scene, the examination is almost always a collaborative effort from different departments.

For instance, the trace evidence team identifies and compares samples of soil, glass, fibers and paint; the chemistry team conducts analysis and comparison of unknown chemicals; computer crimes team recovers audio and/or video evidence from computers; ballistics identifies firearms; and serology and DNA conducts bodily fluid analysis.

CSI may consult with specialists in examining evidence

While the crime lab processes all of the evidence the CSI collected at the crime scene, detectives on the case look for clues from other sources to solve the murder.

These sources include documents, witnesses’ statements, and records related to the crime.

Detectives may run possible suspects’ profile to check if they have prior criminal record, or look into the victims’ bank statement, phone record, and online activity, as well as other relevant sources to find connections between the victims, crime, and suspects.

scientists, as well as detectives have to be constantly aware of and on call to dive into the new evidence. Some cases can even go cold and may be unsolvable. But when the stacked up evidence can decisively point to a suspect or more, you will feel like all your hard work is definitely worth it. This article does not even do actual CSI work justice.

Now that you’ve read through crime scene investigation procedure, are you ready to catch the bad guys yourself and serve them some scientific justice?

After each department examines their evidence and comes to their own expert conclusions, the CSI in charge will compile the results into a detailed report and deliver them to the detective on the case. Officers in charge will make their arrest, and with that, you’ve helped make the world a better place by bringing someone to justice!

Solving a crime may sound like a tedious work, but it is also a rewarding one. It can go on for months, years, even decades on end.

From Oxford to Cambridge, Birmingham to London: Campus and Passion Hopping in England

I

f you have dreamt of living like the wizards and witches in the (not so) fictional world of J.K. Rowling’s magical world of Harry Potter, this 10-day experiential study tour in England is probably the closest you can get to flying on a broom across the London sky.

In the spring of 2019, students from IPEKA Integrated Christian School (IICS) flew all the way to the northern hemisphere, only to hop around 4 different cities in England, all in their journey of discovering their passion.

What followed was not only an insightful journey, but also an enriching one. In an exploration to discover one’s passion in England – home to the world’s leading universities - how can one forget to visit some of the country’s best universities? During this trip, students visited not one, not two, but six universities! All to see what it’s like to pursue higher education in these iconic schools.

Four of the universities visited are part of the “golden triangle” of London-OxfordCambridge’s top funded research universities.

Students travelled from London’s King’s College and Imperial College, to the world’s oldest English-speaking school, University of Oxford and the universities’ north-east counterpart University of Cambridge.

Two others are located in the West Midlands: the University of Birmingham at UK’s second most populous city, and the University of Warwick at the second largest city in West Midlands after Birmingham.

Tokyo University Trail: Gathering Information from Top Universities in Tokyo

J

apan has been one of the most famous destinations to study abroad.

Hence, before making a decision to apply to one of the universities in Japan, students of BINUS SCHOOL Serpong visited four of Tokyo’s biggest universities, both government-owned and private-owned. They are the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Keio University, University of Tokyo, and Waseda University. In the visits, not only they tour around the campus; they also got an information session in every university where they were informed about the

programs offered, how to apply to the universities and scholarship opportunities, life as students in Japan, living costs, as well as year-round extra-curricular activities in each university.

In Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa Campus particularly, students had the chance to get information about the program itself and engage with Japanese and international students from their Global Information and Governance Academic (GIGA) Program, followed by a campus tour and robotic workshop.

The Japanese and international students in GIGA Program shared about their student life and life around campus as well. Intrigued, many students from BINUS SCHOOL Serpong threw a lot of questions to the GIGA Program students and representatives – most of the questions are about the challenges in adapting to a new environment, the scholarship opportunities and how to apply for them, as well as the future career one can pursue after they graduate.

After the information and sharing session, students are guided to tour around the campus. They visited the lake that has been the highlight of Fujisawa Campus, followed by library and audio-visual tour.

At the end of the visit, students were even given a robotic workshop by a professor in engineering in which a pet robot was introduced. The robot looked like a round rug with fluffy tail that moves happily when petted. The professor told the students about the history of robots in Japan and the breakthroughs in the industry.

This interaction and workshop, along with the campus tour, provided students with the opportunity to have a deeper insight to international programs, as well as the culture of Japanese tertiary studies.

On a not completely different page, Vooya believes that a wholesome experience shouldn’t be all work and no play.

Therefore, students also went to explore DisneySea, sightsaw the ancient Buddhist temple Sensoji in Asakusa and visited Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation Miraikan as well as Toyota Mega Web. Aside from pure fun, the visits also aimed to be a means of knowledge and passion exploration of science and technology through external exhibitions.

Students also get to experience Japanese culture while exploring one’s passion, all over the course of only 8 days. The activities, visits, and explorations that were done in the course of a week may seem like it’s too short of a time. What greater thing can the world offer other than anime mixed with food in one plate? That’s what a bento meal essentially is! In this workshop, I learned how to make a bento meal like the one Japanese moms make for their children. The best part was of course when I got to enjoy my “splendid” creation. It tasted amazing, the texture and colours were absolutely incredible!

People say that it doesn’t count as going to Japan if you don’t visit Mount Fuji. And so there I was, standing in front of the iconic Mount Fuji of Japan.

To me, it really felt like such a satisfying achievement after days of workshops. The snow-covered peak was especially pretty. I might not visit it again in the future, but I recommend anyone visiting Japan for the first time to do it at least once.

I enjoy watching detective films like CSI and Sherlock Holmes, so I was very interested in this workshop. Apparently, it was nothing like what I had in mind. It was fun, but I learnt that being a real-life detective takes a professional and requires critical thinking and brainstorming. We also did many cool things to collect evidence, like scanning fingerprints and blood splatter analysis. Next time, I’ll be applying what I learned in this activity to future detective movies!

Today, we went to JPX Tokyo Stock Exchange. I have never really understood the trading world so I definitely learned a lot about the terminologies and how the stock exchange works. After learning about how it works, we played a trading simulation on a tablet. After “10 days” of trading, we would see who made the most money. Well, I lost more than I gained more but it’s ok, the workshop was fun and educational. I may even start investing on stocks myself!

Then, we learned the innovation of music with Makey Makey which you could use to make beats or music from anything. Yes, ANYTHING, we even tried it with carrots. It was fun, and the result was truly marvelous. I would love to continue my work again someday.

At this place we did many activities, I loved it. First, we did a science experiment to see if CO2 affects the pH level of water. Then we got into the pools and fed the sharks & rays! I would like to do this again with my family!

Next time when I go here, I will definitely want to learn more about the animals and explore the zoo more.

hristmas and New Year in London, one of the world’s most famous cities, can’t fail to amaze. Towards the end of 2018, our daring Vooyagers strolled around London’s iconic landmarks while immersing themselves with locals in the city’s worldrenown festive celebrations. Our Vooyagers started the trip with Boxing Day shopping spree on Oxford Street. The sales were quite spectacular and some of our Vooyagers managed to get new shoes for a great price that wouldn’t be possible anywhere else!

On Christmas at Kew, Kew Gardens turned into a dim space, lit by Christmas lights in mesmerizing patterns and shapes. Our Vooyagers ventured into the sparkling winter trail and saw the dynamic laser projections that illuminate the iconic Temperate House.

After bracing the cold winter air, they wound down with the warmth from hot chocolate and toasted marshmallow.

The lights shined even brighter in the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park; the Vooyagers could see them from the top of the Ferris wheel that is overlooking the city. But the Ferris wheel is not the only ride there; they took the roller-coaster ride and explore the Ice Mountain, among others. They also walked underneath the blinking gates, tried street food from carts decorated in a fairytale style, and ice-skated in the frozen lake within the park.

One of the most unforgettable moments was to see the lights explode in the sky; it’s London’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks along the River Thames bank. At exactly midnight, they heard Big Ben’s famous “bongs” rang, followed by the UK’s largest annual fireworks display over the London Eye. The Vooyagers braved the cold to have their faces illuminated by the radiant night sky.

A Springtime Row between Sakura Trees

C

herry blossom (sakura) in Japan is the most awaited season of the year, a time when everyone gets together with family, friends or colleagues under the blooming cherry blossom tree. What is the best thing to do in cherry blossom season in Tokyo?

Students from ACS Jakarta got the chance to row boats in Chidorigafuchi Moat, located not far from the Imperial Palace in the heart of Japans' capital, The sakuras along the Chidorigafuchi Moat are amongst the most famous in Japan. As the trees are towering so high and bending so low, students could easily row underneath them and be completely surrounded by pink petals, from above and below. It really is a dream all in pink!

Rowing turned out to be not so easy; there are skills--for example, a quick decision whether to push or pull--required to move smoothly on the water. Some Vooyagers were more virtuoso, while the others struggled. But every one of them got to enjoy blossoming cherry trees that lined both sides of the river, and had the chance to gently touch the branches. The views from the boat are incredible and can’t be beaten. Words cannot describe how stunning Chidorigafuchi looks like from the middle of the moat.

In-season trips are one of the advantages of Vooya Journey. We always adjust our itinerary to include experiences and activities that are best visited in the season, so that the Vooyagers are not missing out; experiencing the best possible adventure.

Taking a Peek of McDonald’s Malaysia Team Renewed Life Story

ome people can collectively agree that one of the most challenging tasks in life would be unraveling their own lives and finding out what they would like to be in the future. It is a lifetime question which answer cannot be found instantly in a course of a day, or even a month, or worse, even years.

A group of 5 people from UNO Asset Sdn. Bhd., McDonald’s Malaysia franchise operator, joined the Design Your Life Story workshop on 9 July 2019. Despite being a team at work, the objective of taking the workshop for them would be their individual’s personal development – including their lifetime plan.

The Design Your Life Story workshop started with an introduction between the group and our coaches, followed by a short overview of the day’s agenda. In order to answer their lifetime question, they went through every part of the workshop: Present, Past, Future, and Narrating Life Story.

Present

The starting line to know more about one’s self is by assessing themselves – including interests and skills. To make it easier for the participants to write down their interests and skills, they were provided with Life Choice Cards, a set of cards – consisting of several skills, subject of interest, as well as the occupations per subject. In choosing the cards, the participants were asked to also provide evidence on why they choose that particular card.

The participants are encouraged to choose three subject of interests. In choosing the subject of interest cards, not only did they choose their own occupation in the F&B industry now, but also some other occupations they might be interested in. For example, Aleeya chose Make Up Artist card inside the Art, Craft, and Design subject because she was interested in fashion and beauty industry since she was little.

The three professions they have chosen will be used throughout the workshop – which objective is to compare and contrast the professions so they can make a more confident decision.

Past

In order to realize one’s lifetime goal, a genuine motivation is needed. To detect one’s genuine motivations, it is important to reveal the hidden desires and anxieties in life. Thus, the participants dove back into their past to understand and uncover these motivations.

This exercise is important to incorporate the motivations, desires and anxieties that the participants have found out in the previous exercise to their vision in life. For instance, one of the participants, Ramund, who wants to open a training center for F&B entrepreneurs to learn about the business, wanted to be remembered as a person who can guide and enable others with the same passion in the F&B industry to be successful entrepreneurs.

The first exercise they did was Lifeline Exercise. All participants drew their lifeline based on personal life and work/school life from when they could remember until now.

From this exercise, they could reflect on their life and find out their highest and lowest moments in life, such as having good grades at school, accepted as a part of McDonald’s Malaysia team, etc. They also needed to assess why that particular events were considered as their peaks and if there was any recurring pattern on those peaks.

Following the Lifeline Exercise is Motivation, Anxiety, and Desire Exercise – measured

by Steven Reiss’ theory of motivation which stated that there are 16 fundamental values and drives that motivate a person. To know which value they uphold the most, the participants answered with a rating from 1 to 10 of how important a certain value to them was and categorize that value as their desire or anxiety or both. Desire is a strong feeling of wanting to have or achieve something. It gives you a sense of excitement and enjoyment.

On the other hand, anxiety is something that scares you. It makes you afraid of the bad outcome or occurrence that might happen.

The last exercise in this section is the Obituary Exercise. Obituary is a news about the death of a person which usually includes one’s biography. Of course, one would want to be remembered as a certain person with

Heroic Narrative

Vision Framework worksheet helped the participants to find their authentic voice, using BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) – a vision statement focusing on a single medium-long term audacious goal.

At the end of the workshop, the participants – Ramund, Zetty, Aleeya, Syafiqa, and Parsidah – had to present their life story that they have narrate using the Heroic Narrative style, combining all factors that they have discovered before (Present, Past, and Future). Overall, the participants finished the workshop well and went back to Malaysia with a renewed structured plan in life, which hopefully can be an anchor in their life moving on.

After knowing the essentials from the present to the past, it is important to plan the future – in order to know what it takes to get the profession. There are three worksheets that the participants did in this section. They wrote their envisioned future in the Vision Framework worksheet, their complete life plan in Odyssey Planning, and the design model of their envisioned future in Business Model You worksheet.

After knowing the envisioned future, the participants wrote their Odyssey Plan according to the goal they have set before.

This plan includes short, medium, and longterm plan; as well as the assessment of the current resources they have – how long will it take to achieve the goal, will they have enough money & skills to achieve it by the planned time. Furthermore, the participants are also encouraged to rate how much they like this plan (Likability), how confident they are in realizing this plan (Confidence), and whether this plan is something that is plausible (Coherence).

Lastly, the participant created the design model of their envisioned future with Business Model You exercise. By using this tool, the participants were able to describe their personal career plan in a simple and comprehensive way which captured all essential factors in the planning, such as value propositions, key activities, key resources, channels, professional relationship, key partners, targets, cost and revenue structure. The cost and revenue do not only includes financial gain or loss; but also a personal one. Example, they might have to sacrifice work & life balance or obtain a certain level of social status. p.36

After completing the first three arcs – Present, Past, Future – the participants took the Heroic Narrative Quiz to determine what archetype they are and what style they are as a hero to themselves. Taking Parsidah as an example, she got The Creator as one of her highest archetypes. That means she prefers to create something based on her imagination.

In writing her life story onwards, she can take into account the power of imagination.

Zombies, Aliens, and Oh My!: The Thrilling Tale of TV News Production The Thrilling Trinity of TV News Production

W

hen you turn on the TV to watch the news, what do you see? An articulate news anchor reporting on the recent political event? A battered reporter shouting among the rowdy fans of a match between two rival football clubs? Or a glamorously dressed host gushing about the latest celebrity breakups and scandals?

Regardless of who you see and which news programs you watch, these on-screen journalists may seem effortlessly prepared. In reality, however, TV broadcasting – especially TV news production – is no easy task.

During the Art & Music Experiential Study Tour to Melbourne, BINUS Serpong students had the chance to conquer the exact challenging experience of TV news p.38

program production. The making of a TV news program requires diverse groups of people, and so, the students had to assume specific roles to ensure that every single step of the program goes smoothly. While these groups of people may differ in size and structure depending on the TV networks and programs, they can typically be divided into three production phases: pre-production, production, and post-production.

Pre-Production This is where it all begins. Aside from the periodic breaking news, news programs are usually scheduled. Therefore, everything that happens before the actual shooting is pre-planned. Newsworthy materials are often gathered beforehand, so students had

to prepare what to air first before actually shooting the program. As students were assigned absurdly bizarre news such as “It’s Raining Money in Melbourne!”, “Zombie Shark Virus” and “Interview with an Alien on the Moon”, they would have to be as creative as possible in producing a journalistic masterpiece.

The graphic and visual effects team will have to work twice as hard, too, to create the fictional environment. Sounds like an impossible feat? Absolutely not! At the Australian Center for the Moving Image,you would have the chance to experience the thrill of experimenting with a green screen!

Of course, students could not resist inserting modern Melbourne background, apocalyptic looking landscape, and the Moon for the live report later.

While the writers and editors write and review the events being covered, the reporters have to prepare interview questions. Meanwhile, the wardrobe and make-up team make sure the news anchors will be camera-ready. News anchors and reporters were made to look presentable for the camera, while the staged interviewees were dressed up accordingly.

This is when the wardrobe team’s hardwork comes into play. Students acting as interviewees were dressed up in scientist clothing, along with shark & alien costumes.

This is so each character would look convincing for the live interview on-screen.

After everything is in place, camera persons, audio and lighting technicians, as well as directors and producers are standby for when the program is on air. And now, it’s show time!

Production Camera, rolling, action! When you have so many fascinating stories to tell, of course you have to broadcast it to the world.

Glammed up news anchors will be leading the news from the studio, while reporters and camera persons will be waiting for studio cues to report live from the site. By this time, camera persons along with audio and lighting technicians are all frantically working from their respective posts.

A comprehensive and valid news coverage would require news anchors and reporters to interview experts or witnesses. With the case of a viral hybrid infection and extraterrestrial phenomenon, of course students who were (literally) acting as the reporters had to find willing interviewees to back up the events they were covering.

Both news anchors and on-site reporters also had to struggle to maintain their poker face and be patient, too, especially when interviewees are hard to cooperate with. But who can blame them? They were interviewing zombies and aliens!

Post-production And cut! Last and definitely not least, postproduction happens when the camera stops rolling. At this point, the video and sound editing teams have to pour their heart and soul into stitching all the raw footage and audio into one single program. After editing is done and the final product is approved, the program will be ready to air!

That must be all for TV news production then? Yes, but every day is a new day and tomorrow, it’s these three production phases all over again. There may even be overlaps, as production happens daily, and so pre and post production may stretch for days. Sure, broadcast journalism can be demanding, especially when dealing with significant news that can potentially change the world, but make no mistake. TV news broadcasting relies on news, and news reports on life.

REFLECTIVE LEARNING: DIGITIZING MEMOIR

R

eflective learning is a part of experiential learning, education credo championed

by John Dewey. In experiential learning, the learners need to throw themselves to hands-on activities to familiarize themselves with the learning object.

In knowledge-transferring learning mode, the learner is assumed to have a passive role. But in reflective learning, the learner must employ what they already have within themselves and see how their new knowledge fits in the established framework or perspective.

Thought and emotion play crucial roles. In contrast with ‘knowledge-transferring’--in which teachers speak to the students in a one-way manner to pass on information to students--reflective learning does not position

the learner as a mere empty vessel to fill.

Rather, a learner brings earlier experience to the table and keep them in mind while they absorb new data.

It is important for the learner to be able to connect the dots among many materials that they consume during their learning activities.

According to Dr. Cindy Atman, a professor at the University of Washington, “no matter how engaging and authentic the context that we as educators teach in, we cannot predict and model every situation that our students would need to demonstrate their knowledge.”

Students’ independence in exploring their own capabilities, according to Dr. Atman, is integral to meeting the 21st century demands.

What consists of reflective learning? The practices can be anything, as long as they include the following aspects, according to psychologist Graham Gibbs (1988):

deeper into the experience. Is there anything that you could get from it? Are there any external experience that could shed a brighter light to understand the situation?

1. Description of the experience 2. Feelings and thoughts about the experience 3. Evaluation of the experience, both good and bad 4. Analysis to make sense of the situation 5. Conclusion about what you learned and what you could have done differently 6. Action plan for how you would deal with similar situations in the future, or general changes you might find appropriate.

Finally, the learner must draw a conclusion from their reflection. Are there anything more that could have been done to solve the problem in the learning experience? And if it happens in the future, what actions can be taken?

Description of the experience is the first stage of reflection. The learner must remember in details about the immediate impression of the learning process. Usually, it is sensory details that are jotted down to keep the learner’s memory fresh. And then, the learner recalls how they feel and form opinions about it.

After that, the learner must put value into their experience, especially the good and bad of it. An analysis then is required to delve

It is an integral part of our programs. With Vooya Journey, we try to incorporate it into every activity that we designed.

While on their voyage, Vooyagers will need to track their own thoughts and emotions.

We encourage Vooyagers not to only track their hour-to-hour activities, but also how they feel about the experience. There are two kinds of reflective practices that Vooyagers need to do: first, writing on the Reflective e-Journal, and second, sharing their personal transformation on the Personal e-Storybook.

“If I had walls to draw on, I’d surely spend my spare time on creating cool stuff.”

On her Personal e-Storybook, Nadya conveyed a deeper level of emotions and life lessons, such as: “I’m proud that I succeeded in doing things I thought I couldn’t. I’m proud that I had the courage to try new things.”

“Making new friends is not an easy thing for me. I learned a lot from them.”

“The most important thing I learn from this trip: All you have to do is try. Don’t give up before you give it a try.”

In those entries, Nadya summarizes her journey by concluding what lesson she could learn from it. She didn’t need anyone to tell her so, but her experience and impressions made it clear to her.

But how does reflection affect a Vooyager’s future career decisions?

First, acknowledging discomfort should prompt them to think about the reason why they felt that way. Second, it would help them to compare it to the more pleasant experiences they got from other activities. Lastly, if the discomfort is only complementary to the fun side of the activity, the Vooyager will be forced to discover whether they are willing to endure it and if the difficulties are too much of a sacrifice in their passionate career pursuit.

SCHOOL IMMERSION - AUSTRALIA

Breaking Boundaries with Passion without Border: School Immersion Program with Sinarmas World Academy Students

E

xperiencing first-hand the different career paths you can pursue in the future is definitely one of the most essential aspect of passion exploration. However, as the world becomes increasingly globalized, the road to passion discovery involves more than that.

Passion discovery in a globalized world requires an international approach, and an international approach is one that is not confined by geographic borders.

Therefore, in the Australia Experiential Study Tour with Sinarmas World Academy, students took part in a 2-day school immersion program at A.B. Paterson, a Gold Coast-based private school.

The journey needed true courage, as they had to adapt with different people with similarly different school system. On the first day, some students admitted that they were scared of the great unknown. Especially when they have to meet new people at a completely foreign school. “When I walked into my class I felt very different from everybody,” Ethan noted.

With borderless passion exploration, comes never-endingly colorful experience. Sinarmas World Academy’s elementary students break boundaries as they immerse themselves in a borderless passion exploration through the school immersion program in A.B. Paterson.

“I was so scared of the students because I did not know them, but I made friend with some people!”

Aaron piped up. Fehmi agreed and explained that when he entered the class with Aaron and Winston, he had been nervous at first. But minutes go by, and not long after, he felt like he was a part of the class.

Fehmi thought, “It was extraordinary beautiful, it was one of a kind! It was really energetic, I was sitting next to Gabi and Nate, we both became good friends really quickly.”

There was also the fear of being the newcomers.

“When I entered the school gate, I was surprised that no one really stared at us, and I was pretty happy,” Kimberlee said. Despite the scary possibility of being

out of place, our Vooyagers went in bravely and successfully conquered their nervousness and fear.

Everyone eventually settled in after they had their school tour and met new friends.

As the core objective of school immersion is to immerse the participants in the school programs, students went through the day by participating in the classes. The morning classes included Reading and Math. There was a break time for students to refresh, too. “When it was snack time we had cookies,” Alex said. “I got to eat a giant scrumptious chocochip cookie that my teacher gave me!” Kimberlee added.

How did the first day go then? “The best day of our exchange program!” Fehmi exclaimed. “I learned that you should be brave to make friends. I plan to have even more fun tomorrow,” Winston gushed. “I now learned how Australian school work. It is different from Indonesian schools,” Trevyn added. Ethan agree and added, “It was so much more different from our school. Everybody moved classes.”

On the second day of the school immersion program, the day began with an assembly. “Today, we had an assembly for Mrs. Roman, who is the Principal.

She had been working in A.B Paterson for 10 years,”

On the first day, students had to present a PowerPoint on Indonesia as well. “After math, we had to present our PPT. I was nervous!” William said. It was nerve-wrecking, but our Vooyagers successfully presented their presentation. This boosted their confidence in public speaking, as well as speaking in front of new audience.”

In the Physical Educations class, students were given time to be active. Students from SWA as well as A.B. Paterson came together and played basketball and handball. Aside from enhancing their physical health, the class allowed them to have fun and learn teamwork simultaneously.

William explained. During the assembly, students had to sing the national anthem of Australia. Were our Vooyagers familiar with the national anthem? “All of student didn’t know to sing it, but luckily there were lyrics on the screen,” Alex said reassuringly.

Students were also more comfortable than they had been yesterday. “I feel like we had already had connection, I am also not scared of them anymore.”

Jasmine said. ”Now that I know the students, I greeted them all. This was more comfortable than yesterday,” Winston explained.

However, it was not all farewell and no bright side.

By the end of the 2-day program, our Vooyagers felt enlightened and enriched by their school immersion experience. “I will really miss this school. And I learned to not take life too seriously because the past is the past, and you can’t change that,” Kimberlee said wisely. Moreover, their experience was very positive that they actually wanted to go back again!

“I plan to visit this school again and make even more friends!” Winston chimed in.

In the remaining day, students had an arts and craft session. “Today in arts and crafts, we had to make anything & be creative. Well, I made an Easter card for my Mom and Dad. I haven’t give it to them yet, so I hope they will love it,” Kimberlee said. “My favorite part of today probably arts because we made different crafts and use stickers and tape to decorate them,” Alex added. “I also made a card for my family!” Jasmine exclaimed.

Aside from arts and craft, students had Japanese as well as completing multiple worksheet. Kimberlee emphasized how good the food at lunch was, “At lunch, I ate noodles and it was delish!” However, as it was the last day, students felt rather blue about leaving. “We were treasuring our last few minutes here at A.B Paterson,” Kimberlee said.

The visit and immersion program has truly broadened the students’ horizon. Not only have they been exposed to more diverse social comparison and competition, they have gained new friends, as well as new skills and knowledge. Students also came out of the experience braver and more confident than ever, especially when faced with the need to adapt to new environment. What about you?
