SWSRA Holds Annual Feed the Hungry Dance
Wrap Holiday Presents At LifeStorage Residents may wrap their presents and will be supplied with free wrapping paper at Santa’s Workshops held through Friday, Dec. 23 at LifeStorage, 7700 W. 79th St., Bridgeview. Visitors will receive free cider and cookies while wrapping their gifts. A free photo with Santa will be offered for kids from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. A surprise gift will be given to the youngsters. Residents may also hide Christmas presents from loved ones in one of the storage spaces at LifeStorage, which will be offered for 40 percent off in a 10 x 10 controlled storage unit. The 40 percent offer for a 10 x 10 storage space is provided for the first six months to customers. The 40 percent off a storage

South West Special Recreation Association (SWSRA), a non-profit organization that provides year-round recreational services for individuals with special needs, held their annual Feed the Hungry Dance on Dec. 2 at the Midlothian Park District. SWSRA collected nonperishable food items from about 150 dance participants. Donations were distributed to local families in need. Participants entered a holiday themed gymnasium and danced the night away. Snacks, beverages and a D.J. were included to make the night even more fun-filled. SWSRA applauds the efforts of the staff and volunteers who helped make the Feed the Hun-
gry Dance a great success along with each individual who donated a nonperishable food item at the dance or at the Apollo Recreation Center. SWSRA also thanks Scott and Tammy McMahon, who for years have donated their time to organize this food fundraiser. SWSRA is currently accepting winter program registration now through Friday, Dec. 23. SWSRA is offering dances, special events, trips and a wide range of programs for individuals with special needs. American Red Cross Seeks Blood Donors (NAPSA)-When the summer season kicks into high gear, the nation’s blood supply is often at its lowest. Blood shortages often occur during the summer months, when fewer donors are available to give due to vacation schedules and other summer activities. “The Red Cross closely monitors national and local inventory levels to ensure we can provide blood where it’s needed when it’s need_ed,” said Dr. Richard Benjamin, chief medical officer, American Red Cross. “Blood is a perishable resource and must be replenished through regular
donation.” The Red Cross is asking current and potential blood donors, blood drive sponsors and community leaders to help recruit blood donors, especially those who are type O negative. Type O negative blood can be in particularly high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations. Type O negative blood donors can make the difference between an adequate blood supply and a lingering summer shortage. NASCAR driver Greg Biffle joined the effort by promoting blood donation on
his No. 16 Red Cross Ford this summer for the race held on June 19. “As a blood donor myself,” said Biffle, “I encourage everyone who is eligible to give blood to call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to find a convenient blood donation location and to schedule a lifesaving blood donation appointment.” Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The Red Cross must collect 22,000 units of blood each weekday and another 15,000 units each weekend to meet the needs of hospital patients across the country. Accident victims, as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses, receive lifesaving

transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood.
