Creating magic in the community Since launching, The Enchanted Forest has grown to be one of the largest and most popular outdoor events in Scotland with over 75,000 visitors travelling to Highland Perthshire for our show and even more expected to come for this year’s show: Of the Wild.

A very warm ‘Hello’ from Highland Perthshire! We can’t wait for you to arrive in the beating heart of Scotland and home of The Enchanted Forest, Scotland’s multi-award-winning sound and light show. Before visiting Faskally Wood to explore our magical show for yourself, get ready to experience the very best hospitality, food and drink, culture, wildlife, and breathtaking Scottish scenery. Take this brochure with you on your travels and we hope it helps you to have the most memorable and enchanting trip to Highland Perthshire.

To give something back to the community, the Trust annually chooses a trio of charities to benefit from the show. 2017’s Charities were Tayside Mountain Rescue, Alzheimer Scotland and Giraffe. Each charity received a donation of £2,500 from the Trust. This year, we are delighted to support Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland, The Birks Cinema Trust and Blairgowrie Riding for Disabled. A special Community Fund was established by the Trust in 2013 to offer funding to many local groups and organisations in the area. This year the Community Fund has awarded a record £17,870 to a wide range of worthy projects in Highland Perthshire including:

Scottish Canoe Association Pitlochry Town Hall Vale of Atholl FC Soldiers of Killiecrankie. Pitlochry Art Walk Vale of Atholl Pipe Band Pitlochry Path Group Pitlochry Baptist Church Royal Highland Education Mid Atholl Strings & Things Struan Trust March Into Pitlochry Women’s Institute Pitlochry Christmas Festival Pitlochry High School Duke of Edinburgh Award Group

nature by night

Thursday 4th October to Sunday 4th November If you go into the woods today… you’re guaranteed a visual and musical treat. This year’s show, Of the Wild celebrates nature and its beauty when you look up to the tree tops. Now in its 17th year, The Enchanted Forest will give visitors a sound and light experience like nothing they’ve seen before, whether you’ve been to Faskally Wood previously or experiencing the show for the very first time. As always, this year’s show highlights the natural wonders surrounding us with mind-blowing light displays, interactive elements all beautifully choreographed with music written and recorded for this year’s event. There are some surprises in there too among the trees and on the loch, but you’ll have to wait and see what’s in store!

Send us photos and tell us stories about your visit to Highland Perthshire:

Running for four weeks and five weekends, you are walking in the footsteps of many thousands of people, young and old, experiencing this wonderland in the woods.

Parking If you are coming to Pitlochry by car, please leave extra time to find a parking space in the town. There are several public car parks. There is also ample on-street parking in Pitlochry and this is free of charge after 6pm. Please note that no parking is available just outside Fisher’s Hotel in Atholl Road, as this is where your buses to the forest depart from. We kindly ask that you do not park in local supermarket car parks and leave these spaces for their customers.

In the forest - Storytelling Yurt

It’s not just the kids who enjoy the stories. Many grown ups (or big kids) love hearing old fairytales they perhaps haven’t heard since they were small. The Yurt is also a great spot to rest your legs and warm up with a hot chocolate and great company. Look out for Claire’s ancient, traditional Scottish and nomadic fairy tales which she often accompanies with her harp, kantele or bodhran. Also, Lindsey’s ability to make up vivid stories that will reel you in and captivate. The stories run every half hour (please check the website for times), last approximately 20 minutes and are suitable for all ages. Entry is on a first come-first served basis and there is space for a limited number of wheelchairs at each session.

Stories cost £1 per person.

Merchandise Keep an eye out for our Enchanted Forest branded merchandise in the woods. There’s plenty mementos to browse, from children and adult t-shirts, eco-friendly torches and magnets. Gift ideas anyone? Remember to bring some cash as we can’t accept cards in the forest.

Refreshments Warm up in the brisk autumnal evening with a hot drink and a bite to eat from one of our catering stands. Don’t miss the toasted marshmallows too. Again, remember it’s cash only.

Charities Our official charities for 2018 are:

Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland The Birks Cinema Trust Blairgowrie Riding for Disabled

EnchantedForest.org.uk

There’s nothing more magical than listening to fairy tales about woodland creatures, while deep in the heart of The Enchanted Forest. Our Storytelling Yurt, hosted by the wonderfully whimsical storytellers Claire Hewitt and Lindsay Gibb, is back once again after proving to be a massive hit with visitors year after year.

Behind the scenes

Meet the talented creative team combining light and sound to bring The Enchanted Forest to life.

KATE

SIMON

Lighting up the night Light designers Kate Bonney and Simon Hayes have the intricate job of taking a theme and developing it from the concept stage to creating a fully imagined show. The visual design process starts after the theme is decided and that theme will bring the whole show together. The route through the forest is then planned with the audience’s experience in mind all the way through the process. Kate and Simon create moments of calm alongside huge visual spectacles, which are all designed to stimulate the imagination, young and old. Working collaboratively over several months with the sound team, Kate and Simon begin to realise their vision for the show. Then the detailed physical placing of lights and equipment kicks-off, followed by several nights of programming the lighting to synchronise with the music. By opening night, everything has come together to create a visual feast for the audience.

Music to our ears

RJ

EnchantedForest.org.uk

JON

8

At The Enchanted Forest, the lights and the music go hand-in-hand. One doesn’t work without the other, but when they come together it really is like nothing else you’ve seen. Composer and sound designers, RJ McConnell and Jon Beales work closely with the lighting team to share conceptual ideas and describe specific technical effects to each other to see what they can create. Key dramatic moments are identified by Kate and Simon, then RJ and Jon develop and refine the music into distinct works for different locations in the forest. The music on-site is projected through an array of different loud speakers, all of which have to be carefully positioned and balanced. Then, in the run up to opening night, the fine tuning begins, making sure the lights and music are in perfect sync for maximum impact.

Highland Perthshire take the tour There is so much to see and do across Big Tree Country, it’s difficult to know where to start! If your trip is short, here is a 24-hour touring itinerary all designed to give you and your family or friends a real flavour of what this beautiful part of Scotland has to offer.

8am Breakfast and exploring in Aberfeldy Sitting on the bank of the River Tay, Aberfeldy is a busy market town teeming with independent shops and cafes, restaurants, galleries and hotels. There’s plenty options for a delicious Scottish breakfast to start the day as you mean to go on. Try the Breadalbane Bakery on the Dunkeld Road for some sustenance. Once you’re fed, every direction there is something amazing to see as the town is well placed to reach the mountains, lochs and the abundant wildlife. A short distance from Aberfeldy is Kenmore, a conservation village where you can experience what it was like to live in the Iron Age.

10.30am Mountain views in Kinloch Rannoch Take the B846 road for 18 picturesque miles to the tiny and peaceful village of Kinloch Rannoch. Sitting at the foot of Schiehallion, a towering Munro (a Scottish mountain reaching over 3,000 feet), Kinloch Rannoch does feel a little bit more ‘off the beaten track’, but it is so worth the journey for the spectacular views and the chance to breathe in the pure, clear Highland fresh air. There’s a friendly welcome in the local village shop where you can pick up anything you need, including handy road maps for your Highland adventures.

EnchantedForest.org.uk

12.30pm A bike ride in Blair Atholl

12

Nestled outside the walls of historic Blair Castle, Blair Atholl is a small but perfectly formed Victorian village. A great way to see the sights in the village and surrounding area is to hire a bike and cycle around the area. Then, for some refreshments, visit the picturesque Watermill & Tearoom and see one of Scotland’s 11 working watermills in action. Dating back to the 1590s, the mill has a fully functioning mill wheel from which you can still buy flour and bread made with wheat and oats ground in the traditional way.

Young or old, if you’re a fan of Peter Rabbit, a short trip south on the A9 will take you to the Beatrix Potter Exhibition and garden in Dunkeld where you’ll meet all your old friends from childhood.

An Enchanting experience There’s only one place to be in Highland Perthshire in the month of October when the sun goes down. In Faskally Woods, you’re sure to find a sound and light experience like nothing you’ve seen before. A memorable way to round off a special day in Highland Perthshire.

EnchantedForest.org.uk

Situated in the heart of Highland Perthshire, is the bustling town of Pitlochry where everything is within easy reach. There are distilleries to visit, including Edradour where you can visit the distillery shop all year round. Take a trip to Killiecrankie where one of the most famous Jacobite battles took place. It’s hard to imagine blood and death here in such beautiful surroundings. See the wooded river gorge from the footbridge and a spot called Soldier’s Leap where one soldier leapt 18ft across the ferocious River Garry to flee the chasing Jacobites.
