Hello to all and we hope you enjoy the March edition of the Wagensville news. Hard to believe its March all ready and it has been a busy time for all Vee Dubb enthusiasts over the past couple of months. The South East Dub Feast VW Water Cooled show kicked the month off and was very well attended, with the very best of VWʼs water-cooled product on display.

Congratulations to Dom and his band of willing water-cooled helpers for running a very successful event. This was followed by the Picnic at Hanging Rock, with a large contingent of VWʼs in attendance to wave the VeeDubb flag. The following weekend we had VW only Drags at the South Coast Race Way in Portland.

The trophies for the air-cooled racing categories unfortunately left for other states this year. But we did secure a runner up in the water cooled category. Congrats to Matt Gardiner and his tyre smoking Mk1 Golf. This was a fantastic event with off road activities and drag & tappet cover racing action, a VW parade and show and shine to round out the weekends events. The last event for Feb was the Karmann Ghia display at Fed Square. There will be reports on these events either in this issue or in the Deluxe Mag in April.

Our VW social calendar is very full again in March with the Kennett River camp out, the VW Jamboree at Caribbean Gardens on Sunday the 21st and of course the monthly general meeting at Bells Hotel on Tuesday the 23rd March.

Further out we have the Volkswagen Drivers Club of Queensland running the 41st Bug-In at Stanthorpe in Qld over the Easter long weekend.

Safe travels to all who are heading to Stanthorpe for the Bug-In. The VW Club Vic extends our best wishes to the Volkswagen Drivers Club of Qld and we are sure Bug In 2010 will be a great success.

The Volksclub Bendigo has passed on an open invitation to VW Club Vic members to join them for VWʼs on the Bridge on the Easter Saturday.

Details are in the events section in both this magazine and our web site.

As you can see there are plenty of VW activities to keep the most hard core Vee Dubbers happy.

Over the coming months we will be talking a bit about the clubs committee and the various committee positions. Our Annual General Meeting and the election of committee members is still a long way out, however we are keen to help prospective new committee members understand the various positions and ideally bring some new blood and fresh ideas into the running of this great club. If you are interested in being part of the committee please feel free to contact myself or any of the committee members to discuss.

Update on Vic Roads Club Permit scheme.

There was a meeting held by Vic Roads for all car clubs in Victoria during December to discuss the new 90/45 day permit scheme. Vic Roads sought comments from car clubs and individuals on the proposed 90/45 day permit scheme.

Submissions closed on the 29th January.

Submissions are currently being considered and we await further detail form Vic Roads currently.

See you all at a VW event real soon, Cheers Dean Holden - President of VWCV The first annual South East dubs fest went underway on the 7th of February this year, with a staggering attendance record, over 80 cars entered in the show n shine with another 40+ cars also parked within the showgroundʼs, the show was held at Bundoora park, in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, it was a perfect day with the temperature set in the 30ʼs, music to set the mood and watercooled Volkswagens all round, you also had the odd QLD, SA and NSW cars who made the drive down to see what our vic vw scene is all about, there were a number of trade stands ranging from performance vw workshops, mag wheel emporium and even an actual vw parts shopping center!

SEDF euro numberplate Awards were given out to those who deserved it, and the famous PIMP cup for lowest car on the day was also awarded to a red mk1 that was 45mm off the ground!

Do you have a favourite day trip, secret eatery or scenic picnic spot that you think would make a great trip destination for a club cruise. Do you think the club needs to organise a particular type of event but this has not yet occurred. Well, here is your chance to get in, get your hands dirty and become famous.

The VWCV committee is encouraging club members to have a go at running a particular event that they think will spice up the VWCV event calendar. If you have not organised an event before donʼt worry all the required assistance and support will be given to you by the committee.

We want to increase the variety of club events and give all members the chance to contribute more to what the club can offer. We have started to see this happening in recent times with the highly successful Re-Volks and SE Dubfest events.

Another factor is that as part of re-drafting the clubʼs constitution which will be presented to members later this year, the position of Social Secretary will be re-defined as the Event Coordinator with changed responsibilities. This role is likely to still be directly involved in some regular event organisation but is likely to also become the contact point and co-ordinator for other events organised and run by club members.

So, please give it some thought and if you want to have a go please see me or any one of the committee members. We, as well as all club members, would really welcome your help and enthusiasm.

Portland Dune Buggies

As part of the Portland VW Drag weekend, the Portland Dune Buggy Club ran a day on the dunes on the Friday before. Given that it was a 10am start in Portland, I was the only one from VWCV to make the trip, although there were quite a few South Australian visitors.

To make that start, I travelled to Portland on the Thursday afternoon, and stayed overnight at the Saw Pit Gully camping area about 15 Km before Portland. Next morning people gathered at a servo on the edge of Portland for the trip 30 Km further west to the Swan Lake dunes. Camping is also allowed in the club area at the dunes, and there were quite a few people there when we arrived. After a bit of a briefing we were ready to go at about 11am. There were 20 – 30 club members there ready to take passengers, in buggies ranging from the traditional VW powered rail chassis to things with V8 power, and even a 4 seater. Surprisingly though, no Manx style buggies.

APRIL

The dunes range over an area of about 1800 hectares, and I imagine it would be easy to get lost, as with all the twists and turns you quickly become dis-orientated. So the group went out in a convoy which was quite fun being able to watch the other buggies perform, as well as enjoy your own ride. The buggy I went in just had a basic 1600 engine and it was surprising how much the soft sand dragged it back, given its light weight. We mostly travelled in 2nd gear, but given the open frame it felt like we were flying. Most of the dunes were relatively gently undulating, but some unexpectedly dropped away steeply, and I could see that an inexperienced driver could get in trouble.After an hour or so we returned to the camping area for a BBQ lunch, and some chatting about the vehicles. After lunch my driver took us on a quieter run over the dunes to the beach. This was a magnificent wide empty beach, stretching as far as you could see in each direction. Then there was a bit more of a run around the dunes in the other direction (I think), and back to the camping area. There were opportunities for more runs in different buggies over the afternoon, but after a bit more chatting, it was time for me to head back to Portland to find the rest of the Melbourne crowd, and the caravan park.

The Friday buggies were a very worthwhile day, and Iʼd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who can get that bit of extra time off to get there next year.

A fresh approach Each year in September the Volkswagen club of Victoria holds its annual election to elect a new committee. These people are voted in and appointed to their nominated position(s) and for the next 12 months are in charge of carrying out the duties they were elected for. They volunteer their own personal time to help the club continue to run properly and within the rules guided by our constitution. For many people they do this because they feel they wish to do more for the club.

We have now a club of over 400 members yet the club struggles to fill all committee positions on the night of the election.

Portland Cruise 19~22 February 2010 On this cruise we had 5 Bay window Kombies, one T5 and one T4 towing a really souped up and ready to go drag Beetle. To break with tradition we met at BP servo at Avalon and had a leisurely run down to Colac where we stopped for morning tea in a magnificent shaded park and a quick browse in an OP Shop.

Lunch was at a great sea side location with very interesting local scenery (ask someone who was there) at Port Fairy. The competitors and their pit crews stayed at the Portland Raceway where the event was being run while the cruisers, who took the soft option, stayed at the salubrious Portland Bay Holiday Park right on the beach with sea views from our sites and walking distance to the Portland CBD and all the action. On the Friday night we had dinner at the Portland RSL and there were about 18 VWCV members in attendance. Your correspondent won 3 meat trays (no vegetables) at the RSL raffle which was enough to feed 12 hungry VWCV members the following evening.

On Saturday morning we walked down along the foreshore and attended the VW competitors and visitors display which was held near the boat ramp.

Saturday afternoon saw us out at the racetrack in very hot conditions. The VWCV had 5 contestants, Andrew Ermel in a Beetle, Michael Clark in a Beetle, Dean Holden in his Karmaan, Matt Gardiner and Boris Semenjuk both in Golfs. This drag strip is a one eighth mile course. During the qualifying runs Andrew Eʼs car was running so fast that he dislocated his finger on a gear change and the G force removed his seat from its track. After arriving back at the camp site we had a huge BBQ cook up, compliments of the RSL. The evening was so fine and clear that 4 VWCV members, who shall forever remain nameless, became inspired and had an impromptu skinny dip swim around 9am.

Reports received indicate that the water was magnificent.

Sunday morning saw the cruisers trip the 20 kms down to Cape Bridgewater to look at wind turbines, blow holes and a very unusual petrified forest. We then returned to a café right on the beautiful Cape Bridgewater Bay where we had morning tea looking out over the ocean. We arrived at the track at 12.30 and the event was in full swing.

Mat Gardiner got through to the final but unfortunately his “dial-in” time was less than his actual run up the track but he still achieved second place and a trophy to mark that great achievement. Boris Semenjuk won the Best Rookie award and a cash prize.

One of the other highlights of the afternoon was a three event match race between two Splits, one being driven by our own VWCV member Doc of Bierdoctor fame.

These fine Splits managed around 14 second runs and a maximum speed of 49.56 MPH. Doc won 2 runs to 1. At 3pm competitors started packing up and the presentations were held. The VWCV got good feedback from the event organisers re the competitor and club member attendances and the event is likely to be held again next year. At the camp the cruisers settled in for a loud shirt or t-shirt theme night, $140 worth of gourmet pizzas and several bottles of premium red wine. It was quite cool that night so skinny dipping was not on the agenda. On Monday morning the cruisers took their cars to the beach for an early photo shoot that came out terrific. The trip back via Port Fairy, Mortlake, Lismore and Geelong and we got back to Melbourne at 3pm, utterly exhausted. This was a truly excellent 4 day event for the drag racers, their pit crews and the cruisers. A detailed report on the two day drag racing event, from a competitorʼs perspective, will be published in the next newsletter.

- Go and have a chat with the person currently doing the position you would be interested in. These people attend most club meetings and many events. You can ask any questions you need.

- Help with a position. If you require to see how the position in question is carried out then offer your time to help the current committee member in their duties. This is a great way to get some firsthand experience. Many committee members would be grateful for this.
