As Im over in the UK Ive had to hire a car, I’ve had a blue Nissan Qashaqai and found it had some great features like a 6 speed manual transmission, electronic hand brake, reversing camera, keyless entry and a smooth engine for a medium sized SUV. On my recent trip to London I was pleased to see that the local daily driven aircooled community was not completely extinct , it indeed still has a faint pulse.

It took me a few days out of London on a country road that I finally came across a white 1500 Beetle driven by an elderly English gentleman in a hurry to get across the relatively busy country intersection.

The water-cooled Volkswagens of any vintage seemed to be limited too. I hunted the streets for the fairly familiar to see VWs in Australia, but the oldest VWthat I could see on a regular basis was a Mark 4 Golf.

I saw a Mark 2 Golf GTI in a carpark and Mark 1 GTI disappear up a local side street but I did not see another golf until the end of the trip.

After following a beetle I came across ‘Woolleys Motors’ in Higham, Norfolk.

Heading over I also saw a fewVolkswagens in their yard; one with an interesting large bumper, it was a pink beetle with some sad rust around both headlights, there lay also a a few 6V/early 12V model small bumper Beetle and a number of T2 and T2 Kombis.

I did not see another air-cooled Volkswagen until I entered a wayside stop on a Motorway at the outskirts of London. This where I found a Westfailia T2 Camper and a big bumper white 1300 Beetle with some special wheels (Empi I think) in a distinctive star pattern.

The last air-cooled Volkswagens I saw in the UK where 12Westfailia T2 Campers on the Monday Bank holiday in August!

On my way back to Gatwick International Airport from Kent where I was staying a 1700s Farmhouse, I saw a very sad example of a Mark 1 Golf, with a lot of rust all through the bodywork. So sad to see one of the few Mark1s in such poor condition, but it still it was a survivor and hopefully someone in Kent will rescue this car! As a final goodbye, as I was unloading the Nissan hire car, a black current Beetle cabriolet drove pass me as if to say ‘au revior’!
