Nov. 11 A business requested assistance with a group of men who had fled the store after stealing shoes.

The men were found. One was arrested on two Clay County warrants. One lied to officers about his identity and was released. Further investigation revealed the true identity of the man who lied and that he had stolen the shoes.

Charges were referred to the States’ Attorney.

Nov. 11 An officer stopped a vehicle for turning left from the wrong lane. The driver was underage, had been drinking and marijuana was found in the vehicle. The driver was charged.

New campaign emphasizes affordability, increasing graduation rate Lauren Soulek

USD has started a new campaign centered on affordability and encouraging students to graduate in eight semesters.

Changes from the Finish in Four campaign include moving from 128 to 120 required c r e d i t hours for graduation, getting rid of the globalization and i n t e n s i ve MORAN writing requirements, changing the way advising is done and creating a math task force, said Jim Moran, provost and vice president of academic affairs.

He said these updates are all tied to how the universi-

ty helps students complete their programs.

“Now, we know students change majors and all sorts of a variety of things happen, but it’s our commitment to provide the advising, the support for students that they can, if they are on track, they can graduate in four years,” Moran said. “If we could change that graduating in four years instead of four and a half or five, we see that’s the largest thing we can do on affordability for students.”

Steve Ward, director of the Academic and Career Planning Center (ACPC) and lead of this campaign, said USD has the highest four-year graduation rate in the state of South Dakota.

That rate is only 40 percent, he said.

“That’s not good enough, from our point of view,” Ward said. “We want more students to get done in four

years. And we’re the best, other schools aren’t graduating students at the rate we are. So that’s the impetus for this campaign, to keep this idea in students’ minds that your goal is to get done in four years. We want to get this goal out to people on a daily basis, or hourly, as they walk from class to class.”

Moran said he’s not sure how long the actual campaign will last because there’s a new group of students every year.

“We got a new group of students coming in every year,” he said. “I think it’s one that we have to be constant on in terms of messaging. Will we still have banners up five years from now? I don’t know, but it’s one of those things that every new group of students has to have this kind of reminder.”

“The idea of the banners came up in terms of being able to get the message to the students,” Moran said. “It is an emphasis for the students to change some of that behavior to recognize that we’re committed. Different departments are now saying that we’re going to offer the courses to make sure that you can finish in four years.”

Moran said he hopes if the campaign is emphasized enough, it will become the “life force” of the university.

“This is directly for the students,” he said. “If we can reduce credits at graduation, that’s the biggest thing I think we can do for affordability for students and that’s where this is really focused on.”

Students and faculty had an open discussion on sexual assault awareness Monday evening.

About 120 students, faculty and community members gathered at a town hall meeting in Farber Hall.

Attendees were allowed to ask questions and give feedback about their concerns to a panel.

The panel included: Tena Haraldson, director of communications; David Herbster, athletic director; Khara Iverson, director of equal employment opportunity and chief Title IX officer; Debra Robertson, coordinator of mental health services and Kim Grieve, dean of students and vice president of student services.

Discussion included how USD handles sexual assault cases, how the Title IX training can be improved and what the ICARE grant entails.

Krista Honomichl, a sophomore criminal justice and political science double major, said the town hall was a step in the right direction.

“It gave students and faculty an opportunity to express their concerns, ask questions, get some clarification,” Honomichl said.

“However, I feel like there’s a lot more to go in this conversation. We can’t just end here. This is an ongoing conversation. If we want to effect change, we’re going to have to continue talking about this and really start to implement what policies and ideas have been suggested.”

Student concerns were centered around training methods, who receives the training and how to make sure everyone completes the training.

Haraldson urged for suggestions from students as to how training could be improved.

“One of the reasons that

we’re here tonight is to hear suggestions, and obviously you’re an important group because you’re the students that we’re working with,” Haraldson said. “We would like to hear from you, what you think is better or what you would prefer to have for training.”

Some suggestions brought forward included not letting students move in unless they’ve taken the training and calling for administration to work with organizations like Students for Reproductive Rights, PAVE-USD and the Student Government Association.

accounting major, said they think it would be good to make this information available to students.

“A lot of students get annoyed with the mandatory programming at the beginning of the year, but otherwise if the information is just available, a lot of students don’t think to look for it,” Gatzke said. “Which is really a shame, but it’s what happens. So I think that we should just kind of make this more visible to students and just push on them a little more, very kindly, but just a little bit more.”

Grieve said next year’s training will look a lot differ-

ent because of programming through the ICARE grant.

Bridget Diamond-Welch, an associate professor of political science and director of the ICARE grant, was in attendance and gave a breakdown of the strategic plan.

“We have different teams and they all have basic goals,” Diamond-Welch said from the crowd. “We have a law enforcement team, we have a student conduct team, a prevention team, bystander training, assessment, which is a campus climate study, and getting it up to 100 percent, advocacy and there are other teams as well

and each of them has many, many goals.”

Honomichl, vice president of Students for Reproductive Rights, said she liked learning about that plan.

“As part of Students for Reproductive Rights, we have been trying to kind of fight this on campus, but until tonight, we haven’t gotten a very specific outline of what the strategic plan would do from the administration members,” Honomichl said.

“It makes me feel like the university is now actually making steps versus just that they are implementing a few plans (that) they never really talked about.”

She said having a conversation about these issues is important because people tend to be quiet about them.

“We like to pretend like these things don’t happen,” she said. “However, until we start having the conversation, things aren’t going to be done. I feel like as an individual, just that it’s my duty to help make sure that these things are going to be fought, and that people know that there are people out there that care and are doing what they can to make change.”

First USD physics Ph.D. student graduates in summer Cheyenne Alexis

Three years after obtaining her master’s, postdoctorate researcher Wenzhao Wei was on her way to becoming USD’s first physics Ph.D. student.

Before Wei, there were two other physics students expected to graduate before her. But because of personal reasons, they didn’t make it past the master’s program.

Wei, who graduated in August and is now postdoctorate, said she was “happy” finding out she was the first Ph.D. graduate.

“When I learned I was the first one, that was only a couple of weeks before I planned to defend my dissertation,”

she said. “I was surprised to know I was the first.”

Wei’s thesis was “Advanced Germanium Detectors for Rare Event Physics Searches.”

“The rare event physics are physics processes that (have) pretty low probability to occur — about one event per year,” Wei said.

Wei said writing her thesis was time-consuming.

“Basically, the main body of my thesis is the research work I have done during my Ph.D.,” she said. “I spent about six months to complete my thesis writing.”

Joel Sander, a physics professor on Wei’s thesis committee, said she has a lot of strengths as a physicist.

“She is organized and

responsible — the things she’s responsible for, she gets done,” Sander said. “She’s thoughtful in how she does her work, and she’s hardworking.”

Before coming to USD for physics, Wei studied computer science in China. She discovered soon after that computer science wasn’t for her.

“I asked myself, ‘What is something I’m really interested in?’” she said. “The first thing, I’m sure, is that I want to become a teacher in the future. I asked myself what I want to teach — I really like math and also English. The compilation of math and English is physics. I showed great interest when I was in high school in physics.”

Dongming Mei, a professor of physics and Wei’s mentor, said it was “exciting” seeing Wei graduate as the first Ph.D. student.

“She is very careful and meticulous in terms of studying physics,” he said.

“Of course, she’s very good in terms of making progress on a daily basis.”

Wei said her two advisers, Mei and physics professor Jing Liu, helped her a lot during her time at USD. “When I was confused doing research, especially at the beginning, they gave me a lot of directions and they showed me how I can finish the work I’m interested in, the research and how I can get started,” Wei said. “I think the most important thing I learned from them is how to concentrate on things you’re interested in, and how to find out the solutions you want to.”

Some topics Wei’s worked on at USD are Monte Carlo simulation, physics analysis, dark matter searches and particle physics.

Mei said Wei went through her Ph.D. program very quickly.

“She was indeed an excellent graduate student in the program,” he said. “In the beginning, I was a little worried about her background.

When she came, she worked very hard and she actually made up all the requirements for physics major in a very short period of time.”

Wei said she’s interested in teaching in the U.S. after her postdoctorate.

“I like to spend time with students. When they have questions, I would like to find the answers for them.

I enjoy being involved with students and helping them find answers they don’t know,” she said. “The most important thing I hope my students will learn from me is how to find the solution.

Not just searching online, but thinking first and what they need to do and then find what they want.”

Editorial: Sexual assault talks need to be continued regularly Sexual assault is a sensitive topic to discuss, but on a college campus like USD, it’s especially imperative to address the issue.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted in college, and 90 percent of victims don’t report their assaults. Often, this is because of the trauma surrounding the assault, fear of victim-blaming or being revictimized in court.

After receiving backlash regarding the university’s response to a recent case of alleged sexual assault, USD held a town hall Monday night to address how the university handles sexual assault cases.

The panel included Tena Haraldson, director of communications; David Herbster, athletic director; Khara Iverson, Title IX coordinator; Debra Robertson, coordinator of mental health services and Kim Grieve, dean of students and vice president of student services.

One recurring theme of the night was transparency.

In their comments and questions, students made it clear that have concerns regarding the accountability of administration in handling sexual assault claims and investigations. In order to ensure that these concerns are addressed, more discussions like this need to take place on campus so students can talk with administrators face to face.

Students should always be included in these discussions – we’re more in touch with campus and we can enact change on a person-to-person basis.

The town hall opened discussion and continued the conversation surrounding sexual assault, however, more of this dialogue needs to take place on campus. One town hall can’t cover every issue surrounding sexual violence.

These types of public events should take place proactively, not reactively.

Multiple audience members were critical of the decision to start hosting these types of events now after the recent sexual assault claim.

Sara Lampert, assistant professor of history and program coordinator for women gender and sexuality studies, spoke up at the debate about how discussions regarding sexual assault shouldn’t be one-time events.

She asked the panel what they’d do to continue these conversations.

In a previous interview with The Volante regarding the #MeToo movement, Lampert said society needs to continue focusing on the issue of sexual assault and harassment.

“What we as a society need to come back to is what do we do with this? How sustained is our attention to and our desire to address these problems?”

Lampert said.

Lampert said the survivors of sexual assault don’t owe people their stories.

“The idea that survivors should have to explain and convince the public and should have to convince men and men in power that this is a problem is really kind of sad,” Lampert said. “We shouldn’t be putting that work on survivors.”

USD does offer resources to help students get help in the event of a sexual assault, including Student Services, the Title IX and Equal Opportunity office, UPD, the Student Counseling Center, the Psychological Services Center, Victim Advocacy Services, Student Legal Aid and Domestic Violence Safe Options Services.

While USD has been taking steps in the right direction through the ICARE grant, that alone won’t stop sexual assaults or educate the entire USD community. It’s going to take more conversations, and an engaged student body, to prevent sexual assault and to empower victims to report.

Sexual assault isn’t going away. It shouldn’t be treated as something people learn about at the beginning of the school year, through a series of a few videos and slideshows.

It should be discussed proactively and include all campus demographics.

It takes time, and it takes commitment to create sustainable change in a community, especially when it comes to the complex issue of sexual assault.

Less than a month after the Las Vegas shooting, with no Congressional legislative action taken or a plan in place to stop this gun violence, 26 people were murdered in Texas due to another mass shooting Nov. 8.

When will this stop? When will people wake up and realize that action must be taken to prevent something like this from happening again?

I’m so angry I could cry.

One of the victims was a volunteer teacher for the church. She used herself as a human shield to protect her grandson – he survived. Another victim was the pastor’s 14-yearold daughter. There are countless stories of the people who were killed. All they knew was they were going to the church to work and didn’t know they would never come home.

The responses from members of Congress are even more appalling. They wrote posts of prayers and thoughts for the victims, but nothing about how they would help change it.

We’re beyond thoughts and prayers at this point.

How many innocent people need to die before simple action is taken against these violent acts? How much more blood must be spilled before the United States admits this is a deadly problem?

I’m not pretending I know the solution to this. It’s going to be a long road, but inaction is complicity.

Elie Wiesel, author of “Night” and a Holocaust survivor, once said, “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps

the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

One possible route that can be taken is Congress goes after gun manufactures for allowing the ability for the weapon to be modified.

Prohibiting or limiting the amount of modifications that can be made to each firearm is a start.

Another route is a buyback program for accessories such as a bump stock.

Making bump stocks illegal and allowing adequate time for the law to take effect gives owners of these accessories time to be reimbursed for the product.

The first step in all this is defining the problem and working together to fix it.

This isn’t the government trying to take guns away as the anti-gun control lobby wants everyone to believe.

This is about safety and deterring future carnage.

This is supposed to be the country of freedom and opportunity, not violence.

As students of USD, we have a voice and can help change this. Contacting legislatures is simple.

Choosing a side and being informed is the most important aspect to this issue. The common phrase, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” is correct, but having accessories no civilian should possess isn’t infringing on the right to bear arms, it’s protecting us from ourselves.

The only way action will happen is if together we commit to solving this problem.

We were blessed Hillary Clinton didn’t win the presidential election last November.

To have a dishonest individual who cared so much about winning an election the DNC had to rig the primary election against Bernie Sanders is sick.

If the election wasn’t rigged, Bernie Sanders may have had a real chance of being the primary candidate for the Democratic party this past presidential election.

The way in which the American people found out the dishonest campaign of Hillary Clinton was rigged was when the emails were leaked from WikiLeaks.

These emails showed strong evidence that people within the DNC were trying to defeat Bernie Sanders and the excuse they used was his religious beliefs. They wanted to use the fact that Bernie Sanders was raised Jewish against him and try and claim he was an atheist.

supposed to be neutral when going into the primary election, but these emails prove the DNC was team Clinton long before the results of the primary election came out.

Because of this evidence, the chairperson at the time, Debbie Wasserman, lost her job. Donna Brazile is now the current chairperson of the DNC, even though she’s just as bad because they both knew that the election was rigged.

One is not better than the other because both were willing to lie to the American people.

In 2016, there was an attempt by the Sanders supporters to push Donna Brazile out of office. It failed.

It blows my mind how people such as Donna Brazile knew the election was being rigged and did absolutely nothing to voice their opinions or stop it from going any further.

And now, after the damage was already done, she decides to finally come out and speak about what actually happened. She wrote a book about it and is making money off telling how she was one of the people who lied to the American people.

I feel like if Hillary Clinton would’ve won the presidential election, Donna Brazile wouldn’t have spoken up at all.

Bernie Sanders never had a chance with the deep pockets and twisted mind of the Clinton campaign.

This is another reason I don’t see how some individuals were so upset when President Donald Trump won the election. These individuals would rather have someone who lies to them in office, than someone who is honest and tells the American people how it is, such as President Trump.

Pets provide comfort, especially in a stressful environment like college.

Universities should allow more pets in student dorms SARAH JONES is a senior majoring in English.

College is a hive filled with stress — whether it’s work, test or paperrelated. Often this stress can be overwhelming to deal with.

Unfortunately, most colleges have decided that students need to have a legitimate reason for keeping animals in the dorms – dorms these students are paying to stay in. The main reason animals are allowed is if the student has proof of some sort of mental illness.

Mental illness should be treated with delicacy

and understanding, because many don’t feel comfortable revealing to others that they have a mental illness.

When a student receives permission from the university to have an animal, there’s a sign placed outside of the student’s dorm room, which sends a signal to others that he or she might have some sort of mental illness.

Mental illness shouldn’t be advertised.

Regardless of health, all students should be allowed the option of keeping a pet in their room in order to relieve stress.

There should be some sort of policy that allows students to pay an extra fee and paired up with a roommate

without allergies or wouldn’t mind having an animal in the dorms.

Pets provide comfort – even their mere presence allows people to feel calm and think more clearly.

Knowing that there’s always going to be a friendly, furry face to greet them on days that were horrible and gloomy will provide peace.

Universities allow students to keep pets in their rooms without having students advertise the reasons why.

Allowing students to have animals, regardless of health concerns, will make college and studying easier to cope with in the long run.

Millennials’ reputation for destroying industries not deserved JOE VITO MOUBRY is a sophomore majoring in studio art.

According to several headlines for more than a year, millennials come off as a generation of ruthless serial killers.

And I have to wonder why the writers’ and editors’ of these articles feel the need to imply this.

Mashable published a list of 70 things millennials have killed, which written by Chloe Bryan back in July. From movies, to the anti-aging industry to the American Dream, millennials have clearly mastered their destructive abilities.

The very first industry

that Bryan lists is beer. Business Insider published an article on July 24, 2017. Its first sentence states, “Millennials aren’t drinking enough beer to keep brands afloat.”

Business Insider said “younger consumers” are choosing to drink less alcohol and are choosing wine when drinking.

Bryan’s list, oddly enough, places the wine industry number 15 on the kill list.

One industry that has suffered the worst summer in 25 years is the movie theater industry.

Back in 2016, the New York Post published an article that states millennials are ruining the movie industry. The reason the New York Post gave: millennials dislike going to movies because theaters are anti-cell phones.

the originality of the movies being released.

“Thor: Ragnarok” is the most recent movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) released and is the 17th movie within the MCU. Although I enjoyed the most recent installment in the MCU and am looking forward to the “Justice League” movie coming out this week — I’m personally feeling superhero movie fatigue.

Destroying industries like such as the beer industry and movie industry is impressive.

Yet, the usage of the descriptors of “destroying” and “killing” when it comes to millennial’s impact on the economy is more impressive.

The reason why it’s impressive is due to how newspaper and magazine reporters and editors are using descriptors like “killing” to gain readership.

Boss Magazine points this out in an article.

Boss Magazine examines a Business Insider article in which the headline implies that millennials are lazy.

Boss Magazine points out how in contrast, the New York Times ran a similar article with the headline “Cereal, a Taste of Nostalgia, Looks for Its Next Chapter.”

This explains the obsession of linking millennials with the decline of industries.

I imagine news sources such as Mashable and Business Insider gain an increased readership on some articles.

I will personally stick with news sources like the New York Times, because they don’t rely on the antic of creating a somewhat biased headline towards a generation just for readership.

Letter: Dialogue surrounding sexual assault must adjust Fellow campus community, “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” – Elie Wiesel After recent reports of rape involving USD students, our campus community has an opportunity to reflect on our response and discussions about it.

Infamous defendants, like Brock Turner from Stanford, have instigated necessary development in our national conversation about sexual violence and perpetrators of it. This time the conversation is closer to home, prompting discussions and factual allegations that would be easier to avoid altogether.

Within our law school classrooms, we discuss uncomfortable facts and topics quite

often; exposure to the dark sides of the human condition is an occupational hazard in the law. Law faculty and students reading about the allegations noticed that the news reports and interviews had a skewed focus, one that we felt was inappropriate in light of the allegations.

For example, consider the following quote from Tena Haraldson, a university spokeswoman which was reported by The Volante: “It’s just an unfortunate situation.

It hurts the image of USD, it hurts the athletic team, the football team is going to be affected by this,” she said. “It’s their comrades, but yet it is also their pride of their team, so I think everybody is going to be dealing with it for a long time.”

This quote in particular spurred

significant conversation within the law school, as to how a quote like this would be elicited, chosen for publication, and prioritized as the concluding remarks of the story. Regardless of any explanation, we owe reluctant victims more support as leaders, journalists or fellow students.

Complicity in light of our professional and personal experiences in this area was never an option. According to Rape Assault Incest National Network (RAINN), a sexual assault occurs every 98 seconds in America. Only 20 percent of female students ages 18 to 24 report their assault to law enforcement. Even fewer female survivors of rape sought assistance from a victim service agency.

Victims often forego reporting their

experience in fear of exposure to disbelief of their trauma or to retribution stemming from the perpetrator’s identity or social status.

Criminal defendants are innocent until proven guilty, and rape charges are quite difficult to substantiate beyond a reasonable doubt. Additionally, there is no doubt that the future of the accused has been and will be significantly impacted as well. After the passage of Marsy’s Law, victims have a bill of rights providing a degree of privacy and other protections to victims.

On campuses nationwide, Title IX empowers university officials to investigate and mitigate the effects of existing allegations involving students and employees, in a proceeding entirely separate from the

criminal justice system.

Although as law faculty and students we often happily debate the complexities of the law in these areas, no debate exists that a significant disservice was done in the dialogue about this victim and other victims with similar experiences.

Assumed innocence of a criminal defendant and compassion for victims or those impacted are not mutually exclusive. Our dialogue must adjust if we prioritize a criminal justice system where victims feel safe using our legal system to remedy their situation.

The indictment documents made it clear that the victim, our fellow Coyote, hesitated to come forward about these student-athletes, because she feared the repercussion of allegations against star athletes in the midst

of a successful football season. True to form, reports on this incident ensure that readers focus on the athletic prowess of the charged individuals and the impact allegations will have on an entire team.

As future legal professionals, we expect community and university leaders to be aware of the societal impacts that the status quo inflicts and we expect our local media to report without prioritizing arguably irrelevant information that feeds into an already repugnant social disparity. Let’s start a new conversation on campus, one that demonstrates compassion for victims while retaining roots in our principles of justice.

Student ambassadors prepare for Fall Open House tours Ashley Haneke

The Fall Open House, Nov. 18, will enlist about 40 ambassadors for tours to recruit high school students to USD. Ashlin Peitzmeier, the campus coordinator for the office of admissions, said there are typically seven tours each weekday.

Shaniah Koops, the student ambassadors president, said about 220 families and

potential students came to Fall Day last year.

Peitzmeier said she expects more students to come this year, making this year’s Fall Open House the biggest tour day to date.

On normal visit days, potential students get a tour of Old Main, I.D. Weeks Library, Muenster University Center, North Complex, the Wellness Center, the DakotaDome and Coyote Village. On these visits

the students “go in a big loop,” and see all the different buildings USD has to offer, Koops said.

For the Fall Open House, they’re going to give tours “showcase style” by stationing ambassadors at all these locations and having families go at their own pace, Koops said.

“It’s an opportunity to showcase our school and give those the opportunity to come to USD,” Peitzmeier

said.

Shanel Goranowski, vice president of student ambassadors, said executives prepare student ambassadors with bimonthly meetings while advisors plan out the schedules. During the Fall Open House they help set up and check students in, she said.

When the tours begin, student ambassadors’ roles vary, from walking with families to driving the Charlie

Cart, Koops said.

The athletic department gave the office of admissions 200 tickets for the rivalry football game between USD and South Dakota State University for the Fall Open House.

Student ambassadors ask for some positive encouragement from current USD students if they see potential students getting a tour.

Hobbies important to student-athletes Dustin VanHunnik

Henrich, a medical biology major, goes home almost every weekend, even during the season, to help with farm work.

“I am originally from Rapid City, but then we moved to Akron (Iowa), which is where my grandparents live, so I’ve been farming for a little bit now,” she said. “I got asked to help out sometimes however I could, and I realized I really liked it,” she said.

Through helping on the farm, Henrich said she’s seen improvement in her physical strength.

“It definitely helps a lot, especially with strength, because you are carrying feed buckets and doing all this stuff, so that helps, especially since I am a thrower,” she said. “But also, it’s a lot of work just between random stuff like scooping out feed, so it gives you something to care about instead of just sitting in front of the TV.” Henrich said her ultimate goal is to turn her hobby into a profession, as she wants to become a veterinarian.

“It takes so much money and equipment, you kind of have to have a background in (farming),” she said. “But if I had all that, I would love it. I would not even come to college.”

While the strength and agility of student-athletes are regularly seen by fans during games and competitions, their other skills are often not as well known.

The Volante talked with three student-athletes to learn more about their hobbies behind the scenes.

Sculpting

USD coaches encourage healthy body image in sports Dustin VanHunnik

When it comes to body image, USD athletic coaches focus on strengths and skills.

Instead of focusing on what the “ideal body” looks like in each sport, coaches explained what the ideal strengths are for student-athletes. This is the third part of the three-part series on body image; previous stories covered body image in women and men.

Lucky Huber, director of track & field, said the sport’s many different body types make it unique.

“If you look at the stereotypical distance runner, they aren’t necessarily as power-based, but a little bit more for running endurance,” he said. “And then the track kids are kind of in the middle of that, with your throwers usually being a little more explosive and built for power.”

Everybody in athletics has their strengths and differences.

For coaches, it’s a matter developing them depending on their needs, Huber said.

“Part of it is, for an endurance athlete, they spend a lot more time developing other strengths,” he said. “That ability to be able to run a 10-mile run, which is a different kind of strength than a person who can lift 600 pounds in the weight room, but can’t run more than a mile without getting fatigued.

Makenzie Burmeister, a junior midfielder on the soccer team, spends most of her free time sculpting.

Burmeister, an art education major, said she got into sculpting because her dad was a sculptor and her mom was a photographer.

Sculpting is something that helps her release stress, she said.

“It really allows me to have another way besides soccer to physically exert myself,” Burmeister said.

Burmeister said sculpting helps her on the soccer field and in pursuing her career.

“It helps me balance being both a student and an athlete, but it also helps me move into my career at the same time,” she said. “I would like to be able to move into teaching, being an art education major, so I think it’s definitely a big part of my career.”

Cooking

Shamar Jackson, a junior wide receiver on the football team, took up cooking because he believed it was a good skill to learn after arriving on campus.

Farming

When Callie Henrich, a freshman thrower on the track & field team, isn’t practicing or studying, she’s usually on her grandparents’ farm.

they probably all started track at some point with everybody doing everything, and then at some point everyone gets spread out to where their body type fits into where they can be successful.”

Craig Smith, head men’s basketball coach, said successful athletes come in all shapes and sizes, but are often labeled because of how they look.

“I think a lot of coaches do kind of peg people saying, ‘I bet that’s a football player’ or, ‘I bet that’s a basketball player,’ and people in their mind sort of have a pre-determined label, but part of that is because you see it all as a coach,” he said. “But in basketball, especially at the DivisionI level, we don’t always realize how big our guys are. That is both big as in tall, and big as in wide, but they catch you off guard at first because they’re so big in the general public that they just stand out before you even realize it’s a player.”

Both physical and mental strengths play big roles in what he looks for in a player, Smith

said.

“One thing we try to emphasize here is trying to get the best measurement you can of their heart, along with their work ethic and how they are as a teammate,” he said. “But at the same time we look at skill level because you’re playing five guys at a time, so a high skill level can always compensate in many ways for lacking in some things athletically.”

Smith said mental toughness and confidence are key for student-athletes to maintain a healthy body image and perform at the highest level in their sport.

“If you have confidence in yourself and you believe in yourself and you have a work ethic, toughness and heart, you can be successful,” he said. “Whether it’s athletics or whatever walk of life or endeavor you’re pursuing, if you have those attributes, you have a chance to be successful in everything you do.”

Being a leader for the Coyote football team is something senior quarterback Chris Streveler “doesn’t take lightly.”

Love for the game

Molly Schiermeyer I The Volante Quarterback Chris Streveler transferred to USD from the University of Minnesota a year ago. Streveler said being a leader is something he “doesn’t take lightly.”

After transferring to USD from the University of Minnesota, Streveler said he’s gained a lot in his year and a half at USD. “(USD) had given me an opportunity to come here and play quarterback, and I had the chance to compete for the starting position,” he said. “That was really all I could ask for. I felt I was really able to click with the coaching staff on the visit.”

Streveler said he started playing football at a young age.

“I just fell in love with it,” he said. “I love the contact and (there’s) just nothing else like it.”

When he got older, Streveler said he started appreciating the sport even more.

“There’s not really another team game like football. In every other sport, you kind of have one person that can kind of take over a game and change it, but in football, you really do need all 11 guys working together for a play

or a game to be successful,” he said. “I think it helps make the bonds that you create in teammates stronger than in any other sport.”

Streveler was named to the Walter Payton Player of the Year Watch List earlier this year.

Streveler said his award isn’t something he pays much attention to.

“All my goals are revolved around what we do as a team,” he said. “To get recognized for something like that is more of a reflection of the team. You don’t get that type of stuff unless your team is playing good football.

Anything like that is kind of like a team reward.”

A team leader

Streveler said quarterback is “a unique position.”

“You touch the ball in every single play,” he said. “Probably one of the hardest things is being locked in and being what we call ‘redlined’ every day. You have to give 100 percent effort mentally and physically every day, and it can be a challenge if you’re not ready for it.”

Streveler is also a team captain.

“Getting voted by your teammates as being a captain, as someone that potentially they look to for leadership — that means the world to me,” he said.

Austin Simmons, a sophomore quarterback, said Streveler has many strengths as a leader.

“He is (always) pushing guys to go above and beyond,” Simmons said. “He’s everything you want as a leader.”

Women’s basketball sees victory against Creighton Volante staff Volante@usd.edu

The Coyotes (1-1) were victorious in their home opener Tuesday night, defeating the Creighton Bluejays (1-1) 73-68 in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

After a close loss against Iowa State Friday, the Coyotes delivered against the Bluejays in an attempt to get their season back on track. Though Creighton cut the lead close at several points in the game, the Coyotes kept the lead all game.

Junior Allison Arens led the winning effort for the Coyotes in scoring 19 points, followed by senior Kate Liveringhouse with 18 points.

Head coach Dawn Plitzuweit said at the press conference the team “faced adversity in the fourth quarter,” but ultimately held their own defensively despite the runs by the Bluejays.

“I thought we not only did a much better job defensively tonight, but we also did a much better job of taking care of the

basketball,” she said. “We had a goal of finishing with less than 10 turnovers and we finished with seven.”

Plitzuweit said the crowd was a big factor in the game, especially in the fourth quarter.

“The crowd in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center was a critical sixth-man for us tonight, especially as the game got close down the stretch,” she said.

The Coyotes will travel to Kansas for a matchup with Wichita State Nov. 18.

After getting the first action of the season in an exhibition match over the Sioux Falls Cougars on Nov. 4, the Coyotes held their momentum into their true season opener against the Mayville State Comets Saturday night inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The Coyotes started off strong with an early 10-2 lead and never looked back throughout the entire game, finishing with an 87-59 victory.

After slowing at the end of the first half, the Coyotes entered the second half at full speed, and held a near 30-point lead at one point.

Junior Matt Mooney led the Coyotes in scoring with 13 points, while junior Tyler Hagedorn and sophomore Tyler Peterson both followed with 11 points. Sophomore Brandon Armstrong was the fourth Coyote in doubledigits with 10 points, including back-to-back three-pointers.

The Coyotes put up a consistent offense, shooting 48.5 percent from the field, while also holding their own defensively in keeping the Comets at only 30 percent.

Head coach Craig Smith said at a press conference Mayville State “played a good game,” but the Coyotes were better defensively.

“I thought we had a good start to the first half and a good end to the first half, and kind of gained some momentum,” he said. “(We) made a few minor adjustments at halftime that I thought really helped us.”

Smith said the players really adjusted well when they needed to, which translated to a win.

“With more freedom comes responsibility, and I thought our guys did a way better job at just sharing it, moving it, getting more close to touches,” he said.

“Defensively, we just made a very minor adjustment.”

For the first home game of the season, Smith said the team did well, but just needs to brush up on skills for the next game.

“Sometimes you get a little first game jitters, maybe a little selfish, and I thought the second half, we really settled in,” he said.

The Coyotes will face their first road test of the season Tuesday when they take on Bowling Green.

Simmons said Streveler is more than just a team leader.

“As a teammate, he’s a great guy to be around,” Simmons said. “He’s always helpful to those who need it.”

Football has been a “gateway to so many opportunities,” Streveler said.

“It’s allowed me to get two master’s degrees for free. It’s changed my life. I wouldn’t be here without it, I wouldn’t have the education without it,” he said.

“It’s given me those opportunities in education, but also built so many relationships that are going to last for a lifetime. I’m really thankful that I’ve been able to play the game and hopefully continue to play.”

“It’s just better for me,” he said. “It’s better to be able to eat whenever I want than have to go to the MUC (Muenster University Center) and get Qdoba or something like that.”

Though Jackson doesn’t

anticipate that he’ll turn cooking into a career, he still appreciates having the skill.

“I don’t think I would really want to do it as a profession, but I’ll always love it as a hobby because I’m always happy to cook for my friends,” Jackson said.

USD theater to perform ‘Little Women’ Historical musical highlights feminist themes, individuality Lexi Kerzman

Though the novel “Little Women” was written more than 150 years ago, many members of the USD community believe its themes are still relevant today.

“It is a coming of age story for a young woman who is finding herself,” Jackson Whitaker, a sophomore musical theater major, said. “No matter what generation, it’s still applicable.

Jo March is very much a strong female character, and I think that in today’s world it’s obviously something that is needed.”

The novel was written by Louisa May Alcott and has strong themes of feminism.

“We don’t live for society, we live for what’s inside of us.

We live to expand our minds and engage in passionate exchanges.”

This line from Jo March, the lead role in “Little Women,” encompasses the play’s feminist theme.

USD’s production of “Little Women” will run for two weekends: Nov. 17, 18 and 19 and then again on Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1 and 2. Evening shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinee starts at 2 p.m.

“Little Women” is a semiautobiographical story of Alcott’s life. The play and novel follow the life of the four March sisters, mainly focused on the second oldest daughter, Jo, and her struggle to defy societal norms.

“These four girls are at different stages growing up,” said director Matt Nesmith. “The oldest one is on the verge of getting married, one wants to be in society and Jo is the protagonist. (She) is a very strong independent woman, which is what resonates so nicely today even though it was written 150 years ago.”

USD’s twist

The theater department is heavy with female actresses, with three of the main characters double casted: Jo, Marmee and Amy. The first weekend will have one cast and the next weekend will have a different cast.

“The reason for that is to give more of our female actresses the opportunity to do lead roles, but also to provide a different experience for our audience,” Nesmith said. “So you get to see the same show, but with different takes on these characters, which is really exciting and fresh for audiences.”

Gloria Kelly, a junior musical theater major, will be playing Marmee for the first weekend of the“Little Women.”

“It has been a very interesting and fun experience,” Kelly said. “Rachel Smith (the other Marmee) and I bring very dif-

ferent elements to the table and it has been amazing to see the differences between the families when the other actors step in.

Being double cast is something that I am definitely interested in doing again.”

Alyssa Collett, a sophomore musical theater major, will be playing Jo in the first weekend of “Little Women.”

Collett said double casting has been a good experience for her.

“It’s really fun,” Collett said.

“You would think there’d be competition, like, ‘Oh this cast is better than that,’ but it’s really nice. Even when you’re not on stage and you’re watching the other cast do it, you are still learning new things. Lauren (Stacks) will do something and I’ll be like, ‘Oh my gosh, I never thought of taking it that way.’ So it just sparks new ideas.”

The USD theater department will be preforming “Little Women” as a musical.

“Being in the musical adaptation of ‘Little Women’ has been incredible,” Kelly said. “The music and score is stunning and can easily inspire or pull at the heartstrings. There are some really fun numbers with dancing, laughter and joy, and there are others that will make you weep in seconds.”

Early feminist

Jo spends the majority of the play trying to become a successful writer, but is rejected 22 times before she’s accepted.

Senior musical theater major Lauren Stacks, who plays the role of Jo, said the character is an example of an early feminist.

“I am also a passionate feminist,” Stacks said. “You would think it’s innate as a woman to want equal rights, but as you see these inequalities and deficiencies in our society, it’s like I want to fight for this. (Although) Jo is a fictional character set in the late 1800s, she is me. I relate so closely to this character, and it’s amazing.”

Stacks said Jo’s manuscripts are rejected in the play because the things she writes about are too vulgar for a woman to write about.

“Jo has a very different, very transcendental point of view,” Stacks said. “She wants to change the world, she wants to change society’s view on women.”

Stacks said she believes “Little Women” is relevant because women still face oppression in today’s society.

“These days, a lot of women are largely restricted on what they decide to do with their bodies,” Stacks said. “There are certain careers that are viewed as feminine, there’s colors and fashions that are viewed as feminine. Jo is really trying to break that early glass ceiling.”

Although the play mainly follows Jo’s struggles of becoming a professional writer, the play also has a strong sense of family.

While she’s trying to become an author, she’s faced with family crises and trying to cope with

death of a family member.

“Even though we are tracking her desire to be an independent woman and become a professional writer, it is really more of a story on family,” Nesmith said.

“What she realizes in the end,

even though she goes away to try and become a writer, is that when she comes back home (is when she really) finds where she is meant to be. It is a story of coming full circle.”

With the annual football game against SDSU this Saturday, students around campus are preparing to defend the Dome.

Several students from Brookings, SD, home of the Jackrabbits, are looking forward to the game and said they’re proud to be Coyotes.

Feeling at home

Lauren Kratz, a junior medical laboratory science major, said the reason she chose USD was because SDSU didn’t seem like the right fit for her.

“Although I grew up in Brookings, SDSU never felt like home,” Kratz said. “I came here (USD) the summer between my junior and senior year for Girl’s State and when it came to applying to colleges, I didn’t even think about applying to SDSU.”

Coming to USD from Brookings was a different transition for Krantz, but she said it’s worth it when USD fans find out she’s from Brookings.

“I’ll wear my USD gear around town and people will look at me and ask, ‘Aren’t you from Brookings?’ and I say, ‘Yes, yes I am,’” Kratz said. “And I have a lot of friends that still go to SDSU.” Jacob Meyer, a junior elemenSee STATE Page B4

Students have many opportunities for research in reach with professors willing to guide them. One of those professors is Jacob Kerby, associate professor of biology, who took students to Lake Oahe this summer to conduct research on turtles.

“I think USD is a great place to easily get involved in some really important research and take advantage of it, and I encourage students to do that,” Kerby said. “A lot of biology students can sit through classes, but a lot of the more successful ones are involved in research.”

Mapping out a passion

Anna Kase, a first-year graduate student, conducted research at the Lake Oahe turtle surveys. She’s working toward her Ph.D. in biological science.

Kase is studying how river systems and dams affect turtles, with an emphasis on observing false map turtles.

“Turtles are honestly my ideal species to work with,” Kase said. “When this opportunity presented itself – that there was funding for me to come and be on a research assistantship working with an animal that I

care really passionately about – it was perfect.”

She meets with her advisor Kerby regularly to discuss her research and ideas on next steps to take. After graduation, Kase plans on teaching, but is open to different career paths.

“Ultimately I’d like to be a professor because I absolutely adore sharing information about biology and herpetology,” Kase said. “But I if I do some cool field work in between becoming a professor and earning my degree, I won’t complain because I’d also like to be that crazy eccentric old lady that has just tons of stories.”

An early start

Many of the undergraduates that went on the trip started out in Kerby’s biology courses as first-years.

“They’ll start out doing some simple things in the lab, and then from there, move to different projects,” Kerby said. “Often the ones who stick around and do a lot of work, I recruit in the summer.”

One former student saw a need for clean drinking water in his community and decided to do something about it.

USD graduate Prosper Zongo started the nonprofit Prosper Zongo Foundation (PZF) in 2016 to bring clean drinking water to his home country, Burkina Faso.

Prosper Zongo said he grew up in a poor family and came to the United States through the Fulbright Scholarship.

He received his bachelor’s in English and education from Augustana University in 2012. He earned his master’s in political science and international relations from USD in 2016.

Prosper Zongo said as a scholar coming to the United States, he saw himself as someone who could help others.

“Coming from a country where illiteracy is a big issue, about 70 percent of the population doesn’t know how to read or write,” Prosper Zongo said. “When I was at Augustana, I started saving my Fulbright stipend. I started thinking, ‘How can I use that money to benefit more than just

Schmidt said she found her love of nature fit in well with the Lake Oahe surveys.

“I started volunteering, sorting out bug samples.

(Kerby) liked the work I did, he thought I was dedicated, so he asked me to come work for him this summer,” Schmidt said. “That was the first time I’ve done fieldwork. We got to spend our days camping and out on a boat looking for turtles.”

In the summer of 2016, Prosper Zongo flew back to Burkina Faso using the money he saved from his scholarship. With the help of his family, he built his first well.

He said in addition to bringing clean drinking water, he has another goal for the foundation.

“Through the foundation, we’ve built two wells, so two large communities in Burkina Faso that never had clean drinking water now have access to clean water,” Prosper Zongo said.

“One of the other goals of the foundation is to make sure every child goes to school. You don’t have to pay me for the well, I’m not asking anything back.

The only way you could pay me back is to make sure you send all your kids to school.”

Aime Zongo, a USD senior international relations major and Prosper Zongo’s brother, is the director of PZF. Aime Zongo said he decided to get involved in the project when his brother approached him about it.

“I thought it would be good to be part of some-

thing meaningful,” Aime Zongo said. “I was not surprised when he was initiating the project. He is always trying to achieve big things since we were younger.”

This summer, PZF will build three more wells.

Aime Zongo said he’s grateful to be part of this project.

“It is a wonderful feeling, just knowing that your actions are very appreciated by many people makes you want to do more for them,” Aime Zongo said.

“Water is the basic need of people, unfortunately, many people still lack clean water in some places.”

Prosper Zongo said he has high hopes for the future of PZF. “It gave me confidence that I can do something bigger,” Prosper Zongo said. “I trust myself more, I discovered that I can impact others positively. When I look at the future, this is something that can be expanded to all the villages in Burkina Faso and every other country facing the same problem. My professors at USD were very valuable in this process. Without their help, I wouldn’t have even started.”

“My project was genetically modifying a species of bacteria called Serratia marcescens. They’re naturally antifungal, so we knocked out a gene that we thought was responsible,” Schmidt said. “Then we introduced it to frogs and exposed them to a fungal pathogen. We’ll be analyzing data to compile results and write an article to hopefully get published this spring.”

Although there are sizable differences between frogs and humans, Schmidt said she sees a relationship between her amphibian biology research and her career plans.

Schmidt plans to attend medical school and said she’s interested in doing

a master’s and Ph.D. program.

“I get asked a lot, ‘You want to be a doctor, why are you doing research with frogs?’ And honestly, I’m still learning what people that are working in medical research labs are learning,” Schmidt said.

Kerby said he takes pride in helping his students find the right research environment to fit their needs, whether it involves amphibians or humans.

“It’s fun to watch their journeys,” Kerby said. “I’ll get a lot of freshmen, see they’re a good student, and then direct them to different labs based on their interests. Even the people who don’t go on to do research can read and understand research better.”

Taala, an event held by the international club celebrating Southern and East Asian cultures, was held Sunday night in the Muenster University Center ballroom.

International club president Talita Fantauzzi, a sophomore media & journalism and international studies double major from Brazil, organized the event to celebrate various cultural demographics found at USD. “Taala is about representing the smaller countries from this geographical area that many students don’t know much about,” Fantauzzi said. “Many students don’t know much about these smaller countries some international students come from.”

Meaning

Last year, the event was called Himalayan night, but the international club wanted a name that encompassed a larger variety of cultures.

“Taala means rhythm in Sanskrit, which is the language all other languages in the east developed from, so the international club thought it was a fitting name for the event,” Fantauzzi said.

International students showcased their culture at the event through music, traditional dance and a fashion show.

The event also featured food from different cultures and a tea ceremony.

“We really try to show the importance and beauty of diversity and to help make our international students feel more at home,” Fantauzzi said.

Nikul Vyas, a graduate student from India majoring in computer science, performed at Taala.

Taala, an event celebrating Asian cultures, was held in

the Munster University Center ballroom Sunday night.

He sang a traditional Bollywood song from an Indian film.

“I miss the food and the spices of my country, so I was excited for Taala because they had food from my country,” Vyas said.

Nadeesha Illeperuma and her husband are getting their master’s in biology. She said they enjoy living in Vermillion because its people are so friendly.

“My husband came here for school, so I decided to come along,” she said. “The school had the sort of programs we were interested in, and the professors were a perfect fit.”

He said as an international student, he struggles with the language barrier.

“My English isn’t very good, we started learning English in first grade, but I didn’t have much regular practice until I got here,” he said. “I miss speaking my first language.”

Nawarathna Rathnayake is a member of the international club and had a role in planning Taala.

“I didn’t really want to go to school 10 minutes from home, wanted to give something else a try, meet some new people and this place fit the bill,” he said.

Meyer said he grew up cheering for the Jacks.

“I attended a lot of Jackrabbit basketball and football growing up, it’s a little different in Brookings, the whole town gets involved,” Meyer said. “It’s a whole town affair and I saw a lot of Jackrabbits sports growing up.”

Coyote pride

Josh Sorbe, a sophomore political science

major, said he lived in Brookings for 14 years, but chose to attend USD. “I was recruited by the athletics department, and the political science department did a really good job of reaching out and showing me what they had to offer,” Sorbe said.

“I just decided that coming down to Vermillion was the option for me.”

Sorbe said the transition from Brookings to Vermillion wasn’t easy.

“It was difficult, especially considering I was coming here for athletics, and the big rivalry between the two athletic departments,” Sorbe said. “I definitely got some eyerolls, I got some scoffs and some disappointed faces when I told people that I committed to USD.” Growing up in Brookings, Sorbe had been a Jackrabbits fan since he

was young.

“I look back at pictures and I had SDSU swimming and diving T-shirts when I was younger and some Jackrabbits stuff, just because you grow up in Brookings for so long, the community supports the school a lot,” he said. “So, I grew up an SDSU fan, and then once I started looking at schools, I kind of realized maybe I shouldn’t do that as much anymore.”

Although he grew up seeing blue and gold, Sorbe said he isn’t afraid to show his USD pride when visiting home.

“I love showing off,” Sorbe said. “Last year I was skeptical to put a USD bumper sticker on my car because I was scared it would get vandalized, but I said you know what, I’m just going to do it. I’m proud of the Coyotes.”
