Construction Zone The $66 million Sports Performance Enhancement Facility is being built south of the DakotaDome and will contain a 6,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball games, a 7,500-square-foot weight room, a sports medicine and athletic training area and academic space for multiple programs. The project also includes plans for an outdoor track and soccer complex east of the Dome.

3. The National Music Museum The National Music Museum is a world-renowned museum for its content, and students get in for free.

Aalfs Auditorium is also a host to a number of events.

Can you believe it? This is your future home. In just a few short weeks you’ll be basking in the awesomeness that is the University of South Dakota. Soak it up and know it is a great honor

to call USD your home for the next few years. I look forward to the day I get to meet those of you who will carry on the Coyote legacy.

That’s really what you’re joining here: a legacy. A legacy passed down from generations of amazing alumni waiting for you to continue that tradition onward.

Each student that passes through the doors of campus makes an impact on the Coyote legacy, and we’re not short on opportunities. Whether you’re representing South Dakota on an international

level through study abroad, or cheering on the Coyotes to victory with the Crazies, USD is not lacking in opportunity. There are a multitude of student organizations and other ways to become an involved and engaged student.

While the opportunities outside of the classroom are endless, ultimately we’re all still here to get a degree. Academically our motto is simple: thrive. With a wide array of classroom approaches, you’re sure to find a fit for you. The quality of staff is arguably the best in the nation and there’s no

competition with the staff to student ratio either. As an institution, USD does a great job remembering the students come first.

That all comes from the top down. I’d love to say I’m USD’s best President, but anyone who’s met President Abbott knows that he just can’t be beat.

The atmosphere that he has helped create here fosters community, growth, and success. Last year, when he spoke to the Student Government Association, he was discussing his favorite time to be President: graduation day. “That’s

the day you’re a success.

You’re a USD graduate.”

The Coyote passion is something you will acquire over your years here and it will drive the passion you have in all you do for the rest of your life.

My passion lies in giving back to this great community that I’ve called home for so many years. As your President, remember I’m not in charge, you are. I ran for President because I love USD and I love serving the students. As I get to know each of you in your time here, remember to utilize both the Student

Government Association and myself. We are here for you and it is important that you know this.

I cannot explain to you the excitement I hold for the day I meet you. I know you will all be making a fantastic impact on the Coyote legacy, and I look forward to the day I get to look back and say, “I went to school with them.”

Year-long class registration goes Former student charged in Vermillion Assisted dorm shower videotaping Living closes its doors into effect at USD for 2015-16 Daniel Hammer, a former student who withdrew from the University of South Dakota in Sept., was arrested Aug. 28 on charges of filming females in resident hall showers. Five days later, he was arrested and charged with an off-campus rape of a university student in the third degree.

Residents of fourth floor Mickelson Hall in North Complex, where the videotaping occurred, weren’t told about the incident until Sept. 9, 12 days after it happened. Kim Grieve, dean of students, said there was no longer a threat to students, so they weren’t immediately notified.

Vermillion Assisted Living closed in December due to the owner’s inability to afford the restorations needed to keep the facility open.

Several University of South Dakota students participating in the Students Enhancing Resources for Vermillion Enrichment (SERVE) organization were

disappointed to see their “adopted” grandparents go.

One student, senior Scott Cichos, had visited Vermillion Assisted Living resident David Hansen once a week for three years.

“When I showed up, no one was there, and he was all sad. It’s pretty heartbreaking, really...” Cichos said.

Only one campaign runs City beer tax petition fails USD celebrates 100th Dakota Days in SGA executive race A petition opposing the five percent “beer tax” failed to meet City of Vermillion requirements. City Attorney James Mcculloch determined the language of the petition was not complete. The tax will be charged to businesses’ total profits from sales, and it is

up to the individual businesses if they will raise prices.

Blaine Schoellerman, owner of Bunyan’s Bar and Grille, said the city will likely see another petition next year, because he believes the markup will cause sales to suffer.

Campus Center for Diversity & Community opens in MUC The Center for Diversity and Community opened Nov. 5.

Two days after declaring their candidacy for executive positions in the Student Government Association, junior Nick Henchal and his running mate, sophomore Chelsea Gilbertson, announced their withdrawal in the race for president and vice president.

drew from the race Jan. 22, citing “rising health concerns.”

Junior Sami Zoss and her running mate, sophomore Michael Buchanan, were the lone running team, and won March 4. Instead of choosing between candidates, students simply voted ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on the ballot.

Dakotathon raises over $84,000 in 24-hour event The annual Dakotathon event at the University of South Dakota April 18 raised more than $84,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network.

More than 400 USD students participated in the 24-hour event.

Construction to be done by end of summer Phil Millar

The exterior shape of the performance enhancement complex expansion to the DakotaDome should be in place by the time students return to campus in August.

Project Manager Lorin Wilcox said much of the exterior work to the building will be completed over the summer when most students aren’t on campus.

“The arena exterior walls will be in place with some final roof trusses to set and exterior sheathing to finish. There will also still be final exterior finishes to place, such as the roofing membrane, but the size and shape of the facility will be evident,” Wilcox said.

Over the summer, the new arena will be attached to the DakotaDome, Wilcox said.

“As part of the project, the DakotaDome and the arena are connected at multiple locations,” Wilcox said. “The connection loca-

tions require openings to be cut in the south Dome wall. Before the Dome wall is cut, steel beams and columns will be placed to reinforce the wall.”

Wilcox said the work in the DakotaDome will begin after graduation and be completed by July 4. The work will extend into the Dome’s strength and conditioning office.

Another construction project on campus is the new track and soccer field, which should be completed next spring, Wilcox said.

“The track and soccer facility is supposed to be open for a track meet in April or May of 2016,” Wilcox said. “A lot of that facility will come together over the summer.”

Wilcox said the bleachers at the track and soccer facility will be installed over this summer. The track surface will also be completed over this summer.

“It’ll make it easier to practice and thus make us better athletes and more

competetive,” Allen said.

Herbster said despite any setbacks or disruptions to any activities, both athletes and coaches have been understanding.

“We’ve talked to our coaches and our studentathletes and they’ve been really good. We know through this process there’s going to be periods of being

uncomfortable, put out and being inconvenienced,” Herbster said. “The contractors have been good to work with us.”

Student fee increase approved by Board of Regents Ally Krupinsky

The South Dakota Board of Regents approved a General Activity Fee fund increase for the University of South Dakota in April.

The increase will start at $4.50 per credit hour and increase in amount for three years until it caps at $13.50 per credit hour. Only the $4.50 has been approved, because SDBOR can only make decisions one year at a time.

About $7.50 of the total $13.50 is planned to

go toward USD’s athletic department, but will depend on the Student Government Association’s GAF Committee evaluations starting next fall.

GAF encompasses student organizations, student health, athletics and other projects around campus, like the Center for Diversity and Community.

The increase student vote passed March 4, and was later approved by USD President Jim Abbott and SDBOR. SGA President Sami Zoss said the increase will allow student groups

to thrive. She said based on the ‘yes’ vote that passed March 4, she believes that many students are behind it.

“I think the USD population noticed the changes that need to be made in order to create an even more amazing atmosphere,” Zoss said.

During the last GAF Committee deliberations, $376,000 was requested by student organizations, but SGA was only able to allot $186,000. Sheila Gestring, the non-voting chairperson of the GAF Committee, said the increase will

allow for $57,000 to go towards student organizations each year.

USD’s athletic department was rated last in the Summit League and Missouri Valley Football Conference for funding. It will likely receive a large portion of the funds.

Athletic Director David Herbster said m a n y changes HERBSTER to the

department as a result of more funding will take a few years to make a visible impact, but some will be be evident quickly.

“Students will see immediate improvements in marketing, promotions, advertising, student engagement and fan experience,” Herbster said.

Specific changes include hiring an additional assistant football coach, athletic trainer, assistant marketing and promotions director and facility worker. Additionally, other areas such as the marketing budget,

recruiting budget, travel budget and salary enhancement will see more funds.

Gestring said this year will allow existing student groups to expand, and newly-formed organizations to receive funding.

“The reactions I have heard around campus have been very positive,” Gestring said. “There is excitement about what this GAF increase can do for the future of USD and the overall student experience.”

Shakespeare folio coming to campus in 2016 Malachi Petersen

The Shakespeare folio will appear at the National Music Museum in March of 2016.

The official dates for the exhibition of a 39-year-old folio of William Shakespeare’s works have been announced.

The National Music Museum and the University of South Dakota announced that “First Folio! The book that gave us Shakespeare” national tour will be free and open to the public at the NMM from March 7 to April 3, 2016.

University and NMM officials first announced USD had been chosen for the exhibition Feb. 26, almost seven months after project participants held their first planning session to bring the tour to USD. The 1623 edition contains 36 of Shakespeare’s

plays, including “The Tempest,” “Macbeth” and “How You Like It.” While on display at USD, multiple events at the NMM will be hosted to complement the exhibition, including lectures and musical demonstrations.

Darlene Farabee, the project director and the chair of the English department at USD, said in a press release April 23 she was pleased the “first hand rarity” would be able to be seen by people from around the Siouxland area who decide to travel to Vermillion.

“From Shakespeare fans to students studying the Bard’s plays for the first time, this exhibit is a rare opportunity for people to experience one of the most influential books in history,” Farabee said.

USD Sculpture Walk expanding to downtown Natalie Keller

Downtown Vermillion will get a touch of artistic culture this summer as an extension of the University of South Dakota’s Sculpture Walk brings four sculptures to Main Street.

Dean of the College of Fine Arts Larry Schou saw an opportunity to give recognition to the Arts Department and commemorate the hard work of artists in a way that would also benefit the city after he received positive feedback on the 12 sculptures placed around campus last year.

“My interest was to advance what we have on campus and also help beautify the city,” said Schou, the chair of the city committee and co-chair for the campus committee of the Sculpture Walk.

The sculptures appeared on campus after the Student Government Association asked President James Abbott for Legend, the Coyote statue near the Muenster University Center.

The positive reception led Schou and the committee to extend the sculpture walk to downtown Vermillion.

“It’s working on campus, so why not use that process and see if it will work downtown?” Schou said.

The sculpture “Back Channel” by Dan Perry will be in front of the Edith B. Siergrist Vermillion Public Library. “Passage” by Ivan Schultz will be by Bank of the West. The cement area across from Cafe Brule called the platz will feature the sculpture “Device #2” by Nathan Pierce. The final sculpture, “Festival of Friends,” by the artist Morin, will sit in front of

the Whoopti Do Hair Salon, Schou said.

“They’re in good proximity where people will bascially see one and know to go to the next one,” Schou said.

Using the Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk as a reference, the project in Vermillion will be similarly shaped and follow the same protocol.

“This project is a great collaboration between the Vermillion and Sioux Falls communities,” Schou said.

Senior Stephanie Fischer is looking forward to the Sculpture Walk.

“It gives me something to look at while I’m downtown,” Fischer said.

Fischer said it is great South Dakota is home to such abstract art.

Schou said the project will cost about $22,000 and they still need $2,000. The city of Vermillion allotted $10,000 to

start the project, and the rest of the money has come from donations by businesses and owners, as well as a few grants, Schou said.

Each sculpture will be leased for two years, costing $3,000 per sculpture. After two years, the sculptures may be purchased and new ones will be brought in so people can view a variety of sculptures, Schou said.

Sophomore Shea Kister is an art major and thinks art is an important form of communication.

She said she likes to see what others have to offer.

“It is sort of multi-purpose,” Schou said. “It is creative scholarship and research, but it is a piece of beauty that the public can enjoy for a long period of time.”

Pick a major based on interest, not money NATALIE KELLER is a senior majoring in communication sciences and disorders

into college, but I was too concerned with finding a job that had a high salary.

So I kept bouncing between majors that would make more money after graduation. But the problem was I didn’t enjoy what I was learning because it wasn’t something I was genuinely interested in.

Nonetheless, I’m glad I took the path I did in college. It was stressful and uncertain, but now I have knowledge about social work, communication sciences and disorders and journalism.

It is also common to graduate with a certain degree, but then end up in a job completely different than what was

studied in school. Even if you finish out school with a degree you aren’t too crazy about, you can still find a job that you’ll enjoy and make a career out of it.

It is okay if you end up changing your major a few times. That’s pretty normal. Students who pick one major and stick with it throughout college are usually the exception.

Senior year of college, I realized I needed to do what I liked and not worry about the money.

As I prepare for finals and graduation, here is my advice: pick a major you’re going to like learning about. If you study something you’re interested in, you’re actually

going to want to study.

When you graduate with that degree you loved earning, you won’t be concerned about the money because you’ll be working in a career you love.

Take a few introduction classes to majors you’re interested in to see if you’ll like them.

Doing this your first year will help you down the road when you need to declare a major.

Having a career you love that doesn’t make a lot of money will make you much happier than making a lot of money and absolutely hating your job.

Coming to college offers freedom and choices. You can go where you want when you want without having to ask for permission first, and you can do whatever you want. If you feel like eating Chick-fil-A for every meal, you totally can.

Deciding what to declare as your major can be a difficult choice. With more than 100 majors and minors to choose

from at the University of South Dakota, it can be agonizing.

Take myself for instance. I came to college undecided, declared social work, changed my mind at the end of sophomore year, declared communication sciences and disorders and changed my mind again at the beginning of senior year.

Now I’m taking journalism classes and looking for a writing job.

I know it’s a tough choice.

The mistake I made at the beginning of college was being too worried with making lots of money. I didn’t consider what I would enjoy studying. I wanted to do journalism when I came

Getting along with your Coordinate to make dorm roommate in the dorms decorating memorable Britney Thorns

One of the trickiest parts of the college experience can be having a roommate.

Most people have never lived in the same room as another person before, and the transition can be a huge adjustment for some.

Roommates don’t seem overly tricky, and they aren’t always, but here are some tips as to how to cope with roommates.

First, be accommodating to your roommate and their needs. However, don’t be too accommodating — some people will walk all over you if you don’t stand your ground.

Second, communicate.

Communicating with your roommate will save you both the headaches of trying to read each others’ minds. Along with this comes the idea of making an effort. Try to make an effort to talk to your roommate, get to know each other, and try to include them in your plans if they seem left out.

Be open with your roommate as well, especially about medical issues, quirks or anything

else that may affect your behavior toward them.

For example, if you turn into a complete recluse sometimes, you may want to forewarn your roommate so they don’t think they’ve done something to hurt your feelings. Also, be honest with your roommate if something is bothering or upsetting you, and talk to them about it openly.

Trust me, more will be accomplished if you do so.

Respect your roommate’s sleep schedule and space.

The last thing some people want is other people in their business, keeping them up all night or waking them up at obscene hours in the morning. Along with this idea of respecting your roommate, is respecting their sense of smell. Shower regularly not only for the hygenic benefits, but because your roommate has to live with your scent as well.

If you think there will be issues with the distribution of chores, consider setting up a chore schedule. Then you both will be aware of when things need to be done, as well as whose turn it is to do them. This will

make chores more fair.

If you are someone who needs space and time alone, don’t be afraid to seek it out somewhere other than your room on campus. There are plenty of private areas where you can be alone with few disturbances.

Lastly, and I really must emphasize this again — communicate. The best way to reach understanding and compromise is simply by communicating.

Don’t forget to have fun, and enjoy the roommate expereience while you’re at it.

One of the best parts of going to college is getting a place to live and making it your own.

Like your room back home, you will be there for studying, sleeping and hanging out, but for nine months. Why not make it comfortable?

Before you start planning everything you’ll be bringing keep in mind some of the regulations the student dorms have. For instance, you are not allowed to nail anything to the wall, and candles or anything with an open flame or burner are forbidden. Plus, you only have so much space to use.

If you feel the need to hang up things like pictures or a calendar, use something that will not damage the walls, like Command strips. Do not use tape — it will tear the paint and leave you

with a repair bill at the end of the year.

Students moving into North Complex will share a room with a roommate that holds two beds and two desks, and this allows you to design your own space. But keep in mind, you don’t have control over the entire room.

If you want to bring something your roommate might want, communicate.

It is a good idea to discuss TVs, futons, carpet and such with your future roommate so you don’t end up with two of everything and a very messy room.

My first year at the University of South Dakota I brought a lot of pictures of family and friends.

This helps because it is always nice to look back and see them. And college is about making new memories, so bring extra frames — you’ll need them.

It is important to

make your dorm feel as close to home as you can. Keep in mind the space that you have, but bringing items from home will help with this feel. I brought my favorite movies and books, as well as a favorite blanket from home.

If you like certain colors, stick to them when picking out room features like bed sheets and curtains.

Remember this dorm will be the room most spent in, so it is important to decorate it the way you want.

If you are someone who wants something completely different from home or have run out of ideas for decorating your room, Pinterest is always a great place to stir up new concepts.

Your dorm room will be your haven for the next nine months, so make it worth living in.

It’s the beginning of the school year and you’re stressed. It’s your first time away from home, you’re still adjusting to your student schedule, and you’ve moved from your comfortable room at home to a dorm room shared with a roommate. Among the things to stress about you suddenly wake up one morning with a sniffle, and it has began.

Part of living with a roommate on a floor of 60 students is always having the concern of sharing the common cold. Let me tell you, from first-hand experience, it happens. No matter how hard you try to avoid the germs, it is almost inevitable that you will get sick.

Fortunately, since you are now considered a ‘broke college student,’ the University of South Dakota offers Student Health Services located at the Sanford Vermillion Medical Center.

Here, you can be seen for anything, and the best part?

Some services are offered for free or at a reduced price. These include: office visits, allergies/immunizations/injections, labs, my eVisits, physicals and STD testing.

While most of these are

self-explanatory, some may be wondering what My eVisits is. The clinic offers diagnosis and prescribed treatments for common conditions if a student doesn’t want to come in.

This confidential questionnaire is submitted to your doctor and an answer will be given in one business day. Conditions commonly seen in this are pink eye, yeast infection, cough, sinus infection or urinary tract infections.

It is important for incoming students to know it is common to share certain conditions because of numerous factors such as close vicinity, stress, or improper personal hygiene.

This being said, it is also important for students to know that when this happens they are able to get treated as soon as possible to make life just a little bit better.

With the medical center located just three blocks from North Complex on the east side of campus, Sanford Student Health Services offer an array of help to students at a discount rate.

Keep in mind that while student health covers the most common conditions, additional testing may be needed. But breathe easy freshmen — luckily those

prices aren’t as high as your tuition.

In the meantime, try your best to stay clean by showering often and washing your hands of germs.

Although our university has some tasty restaurants, it is important to try your best to eat as healthy as you can to fuel your body to fight off possible infections. Finally, exercise. USD has a great wellness center located behind the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts, and it is important to exercise your muscles and organs to make them stronger to fight off infections.

Try as you might to avoid those who are sick, but with the combination to exposure and not taking care of yourself, you’re bound to catch a cold or two. Don’t worry, though, you’re covered.

Why staying at USD is worth it JACKIE HENDRY is a senior majoring in media & journalism.

Had I gotten my way a few months into my freshman year, I wouldn’t be writing this column right now.

I wouldn’t be dreading final papers and projects, I wouldn’t be frustrated with classes I did and didn’t take, and I certainly wouldn’t be taking an extra semester to finish my degree.

Had I gotten my way, I’d be far from Vermillion, probably majoring in something else entirely. Maybe I’d be happier. Maybe not.

I’ve written this sort of column before, and each time I admit that college has not been my favorite season of life.

It was a difficult transition from home, and life has upset just about every plan I made for what I wanted from my college career.

A few months into my freshman year, all I wanted was to go home and not come back.

Even now as a senior, sometimes I’m tired enough and disillusioned enough to wish I had.

But, if I’d gotten my way four years ago, I wouldn’t have spent Saturday night at the top of Spirit Mound watching a distant lightning storm with a group of friends I met because I got involved with The Volante my sophomore year.

I wouldn’t have just been theorizing about the Mad Men finale with my best friend and roommate — who, incidentally, lived just a couple doors down from me freshman year and sat next to me in speech class.

I wouldn’t have spent last summer interning with South Dakota Public Radio and traveling across the state to gather interviews for my infinitely overwhelming thesis project.

I wouldn’t have proven to myself that it is possible to start off knowing no one, and end up with a newfashioned sort of family at my home away from home.

I know people who took college by storm, who relished their freshman year and accomplished everything they set out to do.

I hope you follow their lead. But if, like me, you find yourself feeling tired, unsure, or discouraged, take this piece of encouragement: you’ll be surprised how great things can be if you stick through the rough patches long enough to see it.

Cooking in the dorms Going from living with your parents for the last 18 years to living on your own can be a very exciting transition but it also comes with one major downfall:

Your dorm room is your new home and your new home definitely doesn’t have as much room and space as your old one did. You will have to

learn how to utilize your dorm appliances and what groceries are essential. Don’t fret though — these are a few tips that will guide you through your first year eating in the dorms.

1. BRING A MICROWAVE This is essential to functional dorm room. Your microwave will be your new best friend.

2. KEEP FRESH FRUIT AROUND Apples and bananas are always good essentials to keep around. They can serve as a quick snack or a side to a meal, but don’t keep them around for too long ­—­­fruits will attract ants and bugs!

3. FLOOR KITCHENS Utilize the kitchen on your floor — there is an oven and large refrigerator. You won’t do this for every meal, but maybe taking a day or two out of the week to bake a meal will be helpful to you.

4. CANNED FOODS Whether it’s canned soup or canned vegetables, these are quick to heat up and can also count as a full meal. Stick with low sodium soups to avoid excess salt intake, though.

Directions

1. Place Triscuits on plate in an organized shape with all of the squares touching.

2. Take spoonfuls of pizza sauce and put the sauce on each Triscuit. Don’t get too carried away with the sauce, though, otherwise the Triscuits will get soggy after a mere 30 seconds in the microwave.

3. Use an equal amount of Mozzarella and cheddar cheese on each triscuit. Or just dump the entire bag of cheese on the

plate, which is what I usually end up doing.

4. Put your masterpiece in the microwave for 45 seconds. When the time is up, wait five more seconds.

Then add another 20

seconds. This is how you get the cheese in the middle melted to perfection. If you use paper plates, microwave in increments of 15 seconds until it is done — I learned this the hard way.

Nobody likes pizza triscuits with a glaze of melted plastic.

5. Enjoy. You may want to seek out help from an addiction center when you’re a victim of microwave Triscuit pizza like me.

5. HEALTHY IS STILL POSSIBLE Although it is harder to get fullly balanced meals, you can follow simple tricks and rules to healthy eating in your dorm. Keep fruit, nuts, canned tuna and vegetables in your room at all times.

Cars don’t need professional mechanics to remain in good shape, but they do need the mindful and intermittent attention of their owners. Things like checking and changing the oil, keeping tires properly inflated and fluids at their required levels are some easy things car owners can do to make sure their car stays on the road.

Here are a few quick car check-ups USD students should perform on their cars to make sure they can make it back safely — and without the need for professional help — for visits home.

However, if students experience troubles with their cars that go beyond their knowledge and ability to remedy, visit one of Vermillion’s car shops mapped out below.

Checking the oil Turn the engine off.

When the engine is turned off, open the car’s hood and find the dipstick. The dipstick will typically have a yellow or brightly colored circle handle. Pull the dipstick out and wipe the oil off from the end. Insert the dipstick back into the tube and push it all the way back in. Pull it back out and observe where the oil is on the end. If the top of the oil “streak” is between the two marks or within the crosshatched area, the level is fine. If it isn’t, visit one of Vermillion’s mechanics to have your oil changed.

Tire pressure Having proper tire pressure is important in making any long distance trips in a car. Long trips can damage the tire, the wheel and

Move-in day has finally arrived.

You are moved into your dorm, you have slightly conversed with your roommate, and your parents have gone home. Now what? You are alone on campus with your class schedule and a weekend full of events before the semester begins.

My first piece of advice? Attend all

events. It may seem cheesy to go to the freshmen dinner or the welcome gathering, but these events can be crucial to your social life at college. I don’t mean this as a threat, but these events are designed to get you involved, to help you meet new people, and most importantly, to make you feel comfortable.

The first semester of your first year is a little bit scary, and no one blames you for being anxious. You are away from home, at a place you’re not familiar with, with people you don’t really know. But you must keep in mind the university, faculty and staff and older students

are fully aware of this and are willing to help if needed.

As a student who once went through this process, I have some golden advice that will hopefully ease your mind and make the semester as easy as possible.

I suggest you take your class schedule and try to map out your classes before they begin. Although the University of South Dakota is not a huge campus, there are many buildings and it is easy to get lost. The last thing you want is to walk into class late the first day.

The first week, often referred to as “syllabus week,” may seem like an easy week because

homework isn’t usually assigned. With that being said, you do not want to be lazy during this week. This week can be used by students to attend events, get their books and meet new people.

After surviving the first week — which you will, trust me — you will have a semester of firsts.

First test, first midterm, first group project and first finals week. Keep in mind that while it will get stressful, it isn’t the end of the world. If it helps, make friends with older students and listen to their advice, since they were once in your position.

Vermillion is a small town but there is plenty to do at night

or on weekends. There are over 150 student organizations, and a daily calendar is available online to keep students informed and busy with activities. The hardest part is finding a balance, but this is part of being independent.

It is important to stay healthy. Keep in mind that while you have the total freedom to eat what you want, stay up as late as you want and hang out with who you want, you are always at risk of getting sick.

Unfortunately, by living on campus you are at a higher risk of getting a cold because of the close living quarters.

Don’t let this fool you, however, because as long as you take care of

yourself you will be fine.

My final piece of advice: try to make good choices. One of the biggest mistakes first-year students make is over-testing their independence. Just look at past issues of The Volante — every year the University Police Department cites a high number of underage drinking infractions.

While you are away from home, your parents and anyone else who might judge you for your choices, you have to keep in mind you have consequences.

Legally you are an adult, which means you are held completely responsible for the choices you make, so be careful.

My first year at the University of South Dakota was great and awful simultaneously — like most worthwhile experiences.

I came to USD knowing absolutely no one.

I was seven hours away from home, and at the time, I couldn’t be happier about it. That changed pretty quickly.

I was in a long distance relationship, didn’t get along with my roommate and kept getting sick.

I knew college would be hard, and I knew that I’d miss home. I was pretty sure I could handle that.

What I couldn’t handle, and didn’t always understand, was how I could see and appreciate all of the opportunities being a journalism major at USD presented to me, but still wanted out. I had met and made really genuine friends, but I felt impossibly alone. I knew that USD was where I was supposed to be, but I hated it.

‘Big event’ coming to USD

Big things might be coming to the University of South Dakota.

Campus Activities Board President Eric Roach won’t say what “big event” the university might have in the fall, but it would happen during Dakota Days. Roach would not confirm if the event would be a concert.

“It’s really in its infancy,” Roach said. “When we have the details, we will be ready to announce.”

Roach said if the big event doesn’t work out,

then more money will be placed toward the spring concert, which Roach said will be a larger act than 2014’s Timeflies concert in the DakotaDome. This year’s performer, Hoodie Allen, attracted less than 600 people.

“We’d have a bigger concert than we’ve ever had,” Roach said.

Four events have been booked for the fall, including a musical comedy duo during Welcome Week, a speaker in September and a comedian in November.

The fall will see a focus toward more homegrown

“If we could, we would like to bring in a lot of big concerts, but we can’t,” Roach said. “Sometimes, smaller concerts don’t work out the way we want them to with attendance.

But comedians always seem to get a good attendance, so we are trying to get more of that.”

End of the year reflections Sophomore reaches further Senior makes memories JOSIE FLATGARD is a sophomore majoring in English and media & journalism.

My second year at the University of South Dakota has included everything but the expected. By nature, I am a planner, but by nurture, I should know that things don’t always go as planned.

A person has to know how to trust and simply go with the flow of life sometimes.

It can be easy to want to plan your life away, and while it is important to have goals, it is also important to be open to new adventures.

I’ve learned that it is quite all right to be indecisive about some things, but it is so essential to have unwavering values, for these are what will help carry you through life and shape you into the unique individual you are becoming.

Unexpected influences may pop up here and there to challenge your beliefs, but it is key to greet them with open arms, and hold on tight. These influences, these people, these experiences might change your mind, and that is common.

Everything happens for one reason or another.

This year, I have tried to embrace the idea that ‘if you have an urge to do it, why not go for it?’ If it is going to lead to happiness, work your tail end off to

make things happen.

Take advantage of all the opportunities you can possibly get your hands on, even if they do scare you. That’s the great part about life and college — you can take chances and find what it is that inspires you.

I took classes that were outside of my major, which led me to adjust the plans I had in my head for the future.

New ideas can stem from new experiences and inspire you to reach further, to learn more, to expand your limits.

So apply for that scholarship, that trip, that internship.

You’re more than likely smarter than you give yourself credit for, and you will only regret what you didn’t try.

“I don’t want to think about it,” has been my go-to response for some time now. As each milestone of my time as an undergraduate at the University of South Dakota comes and goes, I can’t help but reflect back on these past four years.

Since starting school, I have grown immensely; my mindset has completely changed, I am more confident in and aware of my strengths as well as my weaknesses, and I am moving towards the person I want to be, which is exactly what is

supposed to happen in college.

As it would be with any substantial passing of time, there are parts of my time at college I wish would’ve happened differently, but there are a number of things I most definitely don’t regret.

One aspect is all of those late nights; a student’s life is always busy. Even though you’ve had ample time to finish that assignment or study for that test, sometimes there’s just no getting around staying up until 4 a.m. As long as you didn’t rush through it and you tried hard, does it exactly matter what time it got finished? It’s even better if you had a procrastinator buddy with you to share that pot of coffee and giggle at absolute nonsense.

Another is taking time off from schoolwork;

no one should have to say to go to class and try your best — that should be a given. But some of the best memories come from the nights when you step away from next week’s test and take a break. Yes, we are students and doing well is extremely important, but there is one thing worth putting the books away for — life, and making those memories you’ll tell your kids about some day.

The bottom line is to not put life off until tomorrow. In five, 10 or even 20 years, you aren’t going to look back and remember that test you took or the project you spent hours slaving over.

Be sure to take school seriously, but don’t let it consume your life. Enjoy your time here because it really is over before you know it.

With a two-win 2014 season far behind them, the University of South Dakota football team is ready to make a new name for themselves in 2015.

That begins with player mentality. A mentality that takes big aim on the future of Coyote football.

“We’re just trying to change the mentality and the mindset to where (we) strive to be the best in this conference, the best in this nation,” senior wide receiver Eric Shufford said.

The Coyotes struggled greatly during their third season in the Missouri Valley conference, finishing winless at 0-8. The con-

ference’s top dog, North Dakota State, wrapped up its fourth consecutive national championship season with a 29-27 win over conference foe Illinois State in December 2014.

“To compete at this level that’s just something that you have to do — you have to have it in your mind and in your head that you’re going to be competitive,” Shufford said.

Luckily, that mentality may come a bit easier for the team in 2015 with the advantage of two new coaches, Marty Biagi and South Dakota alum Collin Prosser. Biagi will coach cornerbacks, while Prosser will coach tight ends and offensive tackles.

“Our schemes are really

good, we just have to be able to execute and get the guys into the mentality that we can execute,” Prosser said. “We’re not going to run a complex offense — there’s not a thousand plays. We’re going to try and be basic in what we do offensively so our guys can play fast.”

New mentalities and schemes aside, the Coyotes will need to be ready to compete at a high level quickly. Glenn and his players will begin the 2015 season Sep. 5 at Kansas State, which has a team that finished No. 11 in the final national rankings in 2014.

Wellness Center attracts new students to have fun, be active Nathan Ellenbecker

In March 2014, Men’s Health rated the University of South Dakota’s Wellness Center among the top 10 college recreational centers.

More than a year later, the reputation of the Wellness Center continues to grow as more students enroll in classes, according to director Steve Mayer.

“As any other business, we’re always trying to maximize our numbers and trying to get as many students involved in our classes, and we will try to add those classes that we need to,” Mayer said.

He also said the community aspect of the USD Wellness Center creates a unique atmosphere, compared to larger universities around the nation.

“In a small town like Vermillion and a campus our size, I think it’s great that we can interact faculty, staff and community members with students,” Mayer said.

Junior Mary Dick attended a yoga class twice a week this semester. She said attending the group workouts at the Wellness Center helps motivate her to work hard and adjust for time around her study schedule.

“Most people try to fit classes in to their schedule,” Dick said. “The Wellness Center has bumped up the diversity of classes since I was a freshman here, which helps switch up workouts and makes me want to attend more.”

The Wellness Center is also a selling point for the university.

Overall, it comes back to having an inclusive

environment and providing enough opportunities for the entire campus.

Mayer said the Wellness Center is just another place on campus for students to have fun and find their niche outside of the classroom.

“We like to think that the Wellness Center provides an outlet for students to do all the different activities, be social with their friends and meet new people,” Mayer said. “We hope people will come here, be happy and stay fit.”

Whether it’s the men’s competitive basketball championship or the opening game of co-ed volleyball, USD intramurals is slowly taking over campus with their Twitter game.

This year, USD Intramural went full force on live-tweeting games in the Wellness Center. If someone caught fire in basketball, they received their 15 minutes of fame from the the USD Intramurals staff. If two teams were getting chippy, the account @ USD_Intrmaurals was not afraid to mention physicality and some unsportamanlike behavior.

Tweets became almost as big as the

games — the game is changing.

Intramural sports in college used to be about grabbing a group of buddies, spending one night a week in the Wellness Center, and potentially winning a championship shirt.

Maybe even throw in a post-competition beer, and that was intramurals summed up.

Now, social media bragging rights are included in intramurals. The pride that follows intramural wins carries over to social media.

Students can make quick proclamations of their achievements to followers, family and whoever’s willing to listen. It’s all in good fun.

Plus, it can be excusable bragging.

The women’s basketball team has made it a top priority to continue raising the bar, and this coming season will be no different.

This season, the Coyotes will have five incoming players and two players eligible to play after transferring to USD. “We’re really excited about all seven of those kids and what they can bring,” Williams said.

After being forced to sit out the 2011-12 season after playing amateur basketball in her home country of Australia, Nicole Seekamp also lost a year of eligibility at the end, according to National Collegiate Athletic Association rules, leaving her with only three years of playing time.

But after the NCAA

granted a fourth year of eligibility to Seekamp, Williams said she is excited for the incoming players to see her leadership.

“So, I think for those seven new Coyotes to have her leadership and her experience as they make that transition into our program, it’s just going to be huge,” Williams said.

After their loss to South Dakota State University, prior to playing in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, Seekamp said a continual theme for the Coyotes has been the ability of every player to step up.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better team and I loved every second of it. This is the most I’ve felt like a team. Nobody cares who scores what and we go out and play,” she said. “We always seem to have someone step up.”

While the ultimate goal of making it to the NCAA tournament hasn’t changed for the men’s basketball team, the size and strength of its players has.

The Coyotes lose three starters this coming year, including a first team All-Summit league player in Tyler Larsen.

Head coach Craig Smith said Larsen and fellow senior Brandon Bos were the two leading scorers, and his team will will need to find a way to replace their leadership and productivity.

“Our focus is going to be on being the best that we can be,” he said.

“We want to represent The University of South Dakota the right way.

We want our guys to be well-rounded in being the best students we can be, the best citizens

we can be, and the best teammates we can be.”

Following the Coyotes’ final game last season against South Dakota State University during the Summit League Tournament, graduating senior Brandon Bos said he believes the team has the potential to go all the way.

“I wish I had more time,” Bos said. “(Smith) doesn’t hear this from us a lot, but we’re just so thankful for him and everything he does for us.”

This coming season, Smith said the team is depending on their returners to be committed to the culture.

“Guys need to lock into maintaining their strengths and improving specific areas of their game for the betterment of the team,” he said.

M: Student turnout has not always been the best, why should students come to Womens Basketball games?

A: It’s a special group, it’s a championship level group.

It’s an outstanding part of your college experience to come and experience Division One athletics at its finest. Athletes that are competing at a high level, winning championships.

Why would you not want to be a part of that?

M: What do you see for the team this year?

A: I really think it’s going to be a special mix of some outstanding, talented new players coming in and mixing in with some players who have had quite a bit of experience. We’re excited now with Nicole back. A pretty good experienced core group mixed in with some talented kids is encouraging and exciting for the new year.

M: What does the new arena mean to the program?

A: The way that we in our women’s basketball program try to raise the bar, this is how our athletic department and our university is raising the bar.

Michael Geheren: Let’s talk a little bit about last season. How do you think it went and what are some of your goals for this season?

Amy Williams: I am really, really proud. Our goal since I took over the program has been to find ways to continue to raise the bar for our program.

Winning 26 games this year and winning the Summit League regular season championship, just a really special thing for our team. I am really proud of that. Sometimes it’s more challenging to win a regular season title just from the rigors every day you have to bring it.

M: So, Nicole Seekamp is coming back, that must be exciting.

A: Oh, my gosh. Yes! M: What are your thoughts on that?
