Sports complex construction expanding to Dome Sixty feet of south end wall at the DakotaDome will be taken over by construction for new arena Phil Millar

The exterior shape of the performance enhancement complex expansion to the DakotaDome should be in place by August.

Project Manager Lorin Wilcox said much of the

exterior work to the building will be completed over the summer when most students aren’t on campus.

“The arena exterior walls will be in place with some final roof trusses to set and exterior sheathing to finish. There will also still be final exterior finishes to

place, such as the roofing membrane, but the size and shape of the facility will be evident,” Wilcox said.

Over the summer, the new arena will be attached to the DakotaDome, Wilcox said.

“As part of the project, the DakotaDome and the

arena are connected at multiple locations,” Wilcox said. “The connection locations require openings to be cut in the south Dome wall.

Before the Dome wall is cut, steel beams and columns will be placed to reinforce the wall.”

Wilcox said the work in the DakotaDome will begin after graduation and be completed by July 4. The work will extend into the

One of eight businesses involved in an alcohol compliance check April 2 failed after selling alcohol to a minor.

Speedee Mart, located at 802 E. Cherry St., failed its check after an underage confidential informant for the Vermillion Police Department purchased alcohol from the convenience store.

“You really have to almost make an effort, or I guess not make any effort, to fail one of these checks. You either don’t ask for an ID at all or don’t look at it, because driver’s licenses for anyone under 21 is 90 degrees the wrong way and says right on there that they are not 21,” VPD Chief Matt Betzen said.

U.S. District Judge Curtis Collier, from Chattanooga, Tenn., gave a lecture at the University of South Dakota April 14 on the importance of integrity.

“The talk demonstrates how lawyers committed to the profession, that is ones with integrity, can affect change not only in the law, but also in our society,” Collier said.

Collier highlighted important lawyers in history, talking in detail about Noah Parden and Styles Hutchins.

They felt an obligation to the law. They defended Ed Johnson, a black man from Chattanooga charged with the 1906 rape of Nevada Taylor, a white woman. Both Parden and Hutchins had

their houses burned down as a result of the trial.

Collier said lawyers must be committed to their profession, as they have a duty to serve the law.

“There are points in their lives where they will face challenges,” Collier said.

“Where living up to the requirements of the profession may differ from their own individual personal goals, and as a lawyer you have an obligation to the profession first and foremost.”

Law student Alafia Wright understood that certain elements make a good practitioner of the law.

“There are certain elements that make a good attorney, lawyer or professional.

Professionalism, civility, courage, commit-

ment to your goals and your principles,” Wright said.

Law student Cullen McNeece said a lawyer must serve their client.

“Zealously advocate for your client, even if it’s an unpopular decision,” McNeece said. “That’s what our country’s built on. Otherwise we wouldn’t have had Brown v. Board of Education with Thurgood Marshall, because that was an unpopular decision.”

Wright drew inspiration from the lecture that one person can make change in the world.

“We need to make sure that there are more ideas for people to draw strength and inspiration from,” Wright said. “A lot of people feel discouraged and disempowered by the fact that they’re just

City of Vermillion Police Blotter April 5 An officer saw a man laying on the ground outside of a bank. The man was intoxicated and slightly injured from falling down, but declined medical help.

The officer called one of the man’s relatives, who came and took care of him.

April 6 A woman informed police that she had tried to mail expired narcotics from the pharmacy to a disposal facility, but the package was returned because it had been tampered with. Narcotics were missing from the package. The case is still under investigation.

April 8 A caller reported that he was attempting to deliver a meal, but the elderly person was not answering. He said an alarm could be heard going off. An officer went to the reported residence and found the person in good health. He determined the caller was at the wrong address.

April 8 While investigating a hit and run accident, officers smelled marijuana coming from the residence where the suspect’s vehicle was parked. Three occupants were contacted and a search warrant was

April 10 Officers investigated a two vehicle non-injury accident. One driver had failed to stop and struck a vehicle stopped at a stop light. The driver did not have insurance and had been previously warned. He was cited for careless driving and driving without insurance.

April 11 An officer approached a vehicle in a city park after

dark. Three juveniles were in the vehicle and the officer could smell the odor of burnt marijuana. They admitted to smoking marijuana. The leftover marijuana and paraphernalia was recovered, and charges were referred to the States Attorney.

The University of South Dakota Political Science department hosted its annual awards banquet in the Muenster University Center April 14.

Department chair William Richardson opened the event, introducing guest speaker Brendan Johnson, former United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota Johnson, who resigned from his U.S. Attorney position in March, is a USD graduate. He was the student government president as an undergraduate.

Johnson directed his speech toward students, advising them to find a future spouse in the medical school library and do their homework before job interviews.

Fire claims two lives in Brandon, S.D.

Argentina calls for Justin Bieber’s arrest

A house fire resulted in two deaths April 12 in Brandon, SD. The victims were identified as 47-year-old David Smith, the homeowner, and 38-year-old Steven Ackerman, a volunteer firefighter.

The fire was reported at 10:08 p.m. At 10:40 p.m., firefighters were ordered to evacuate the home. Ackerman was the only person unaccounted for. His body was found in the basement at 1:30 a.m. April 13.

An Argentine judge issued an arrest warrant for Justin Bieber and two of his bodyguards on April 10. The warrant was issued because of an alleged act of aggression against a photographer in 2013.

Bieber didn’t return to Argentina for questioning in November as requested.

Bieber also allegedly stole the photographer’s camera and left a discotheque without paying his bill.

Mary Nettleman, Dean of the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, has been elected to the National Council of Deans.

The council oversees the Association of American Medical Colleges. She will serve a one-year term.

The Council of Deans helps to give service and advocate for research, patient care and student performance and preparation. This council covers all of the nation’s medical schools.

In two of the last three years, USD law teams have placed in the top five in professionalism and ethics at this national competition.

Twenty law schools were invited to the competition.

STATE State to benefit from Walmart campaign This week, Walmart launched its “Fight Hunger, Spark Change” campaign, a nationwide initiative that aims to combat food insecurity.

Feeding South Dakota, along with other Feeding America member food banks across the U.S., will benefit from up to $3 million in Walmart donations.

Walmart also aims to help Feeding America secure the equivalent of 75 millions meals on behalf of Feeding South Dakota and other food banks. Walmart has made it possible for customers to make donations to Feeding South Dakota at the register during checkout.

The fundraiser will end May 3.

John T. Booker, Jr., 20, has been accused of planning a suicide attack at Fort Riley. He was arrested while trying to arm what he thought was a 1,000 pound bomb.

This was part of a plot to support the Islamic State, federal prosecutor said.

Booker was arrested without incident in a city that borders Fort Riley.

According to court documents, Booker told an FBI informant that the attack was justified because “the Quran “says to kill your enemies wherever they are.

Tulsa deputy charged with manslaughter Robert Bates, a Tulsa County deputy, fatally shot a man, claiming he accidentally grabbed his gun instead of his Taser.

He now faces seconddegree manslaughter involving culpable negligence.

The killing of Eric Courtney Harries was caught on video and has been released at the request of his family.

Sgt. Jim Clark of the Tulsa Police Department, who was brought in to review the case, excused Bates’ behavior. Clark said Bates was the victim of “slip and capture,” a product of a high-stress situation.

ISIS destroys ancient archaeological site The Islamic State released a new propaganda video showing its fighters destroying an ancient city April 11.

Nimrud, Iraq, which is located close to ISIS’ main stronghold, is more than 3,000 years old.

Fighters were shown destroying the site with sledgehammers, power tools and finally explosives.

The United Nations has previously referred to these deliberate acts of destruction as “war crimes.”

Campus football clinic should be more inclusive of all genders On April 17, the University of South Dakota football team will host a clinic to teach women how to play football. The clinic was created to teach female fans of Coyote football the process of what the players go through and how to play the game. The day ends with a powder puff football game.

While the intentions of this event are good, it is sexist, not only against women, but against men as well.

The clinic dictates that only women are allowed to attend the event, which automatically makes the assumption that all women are clueless about the sport of football. It also makes the assumption that men are essentially born with the skills and knowledge necessary to understand and play football.

On a campus that strives to foster the idea

of inclusive excellence in everything it does, it’s disappointing that the university would not want to organize an event that invites everyone on campus to come together.

Organizers of the event say the clinic is designed specifically with women in mind as “football (is) a male-dominated sport, and men having played football and having been a fan their whole life, this gives women a chance to experience it differently than their husbands do.”

While this event is great because it helps to bring the community and university together, it should really be more inclusive. Why not include all genders in the clinic to help foster a stronger fan base for the Coyotes?

Along with some women, there are certainly a number of men who do not fully understand the rules and regulations of the game, or at the very

least just want to further immerse themselves into a sport they are passionate about.

This campus is filled with a variety of students from different backgrounds. For one, we have foreign exchange students who may not know the game, and we aren’t extending this invitation to them.

Additionally, we have students here from all over the country and world who may not know how to play but we aren’t extending this invitation to them. They are simply out of luck, and this is unfair.

This event may be helping to create hype among female fans about the upcoming football season, but it is also unintentionally contributing to the sexist bias that men and women are supposed to adhere to certain standards based on their gender.

Since the end of marijuana prohibition in Washington and Colorado, many states are reconsidering their policies regarding the medicinal plant.

Many of the fallacies that people have believed for so long are quickly being proven wrong, and

it’s time South Dakota laws regarding marijuana use and possession are updated to suit the facts rather than the nonsense.

Sensible policies regarding marijuana do not currently exist in South Dakota. Marijuana prohibition simply guarantees that its production and sale are completely unregulated, and this unfortunately sometimes leads to violence.

Taking marijuana off the criminal market would put an end to unnecessary violence.

A liquor or grocery store sells alcohol because they have a license to do so, and this means they

cannot sell to minors because it would violate the terms of that license by breaking the law.

The unregulated sale of marijuana means that a seller can run their business from any location with no license, and no motivation to be concerned with the age of any given customer.

In Colorado, you may walk into a dispensary and prove that you are an adult and proceed to purchase quality marijuana that you may smoke in the privacy of your own home, without worrying about becoming a felon if your neighbor decides to call the police.

Allowing adults to consume marijuana while taxing and strictly regulating its production and sale is not only the logical choice, but it also benefits people who suffer from a variety of conditions which marijuana is likely to treat effectively. Medicinal marijuana can treat muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, nausea from cancer chemotherapy, poor appetite and weight loss caused by chronic illness such as HIV, seizures or nerve pain disorders and Crohn’s disease.

It is a shame that anyone who suffers from any of these ailments is denied a legitimate treatment, and it is even more shameful that a person would be treated like a criminal for doing so in South Dakota.

It is also notable that a recent study by the American Civil Liberties Union concluded that South Dakota was among the top 10 states with the largest racial disparities in marijuana possession arrest rates.

Though people of all races are using marijuana at nearly identical rates, black people in South Dakota are approximately 4.8 times more likely

than white people to be arrested for marijuana possession.

Such a disparity clearly illustrates how appalling prohibition laws are and how negatively they affect society.

South Dakotans must actively fight legislation that seeks to keep the prohibition in effect, because it is an illogical and detrimental system that destroys the lives of many people who can truly benefit from marijuana.

Shifting attitudes encourage women to love natural hair

My Story: Sexual assault can happen to anyone

Be Informed Sexual assault is not limited to only rape. According to The Department of Justice, “Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape.”

If you are forced into any sexual contact with anyone, it is considered sexual assault. Both males and females can be victims of sexual assault.

One in six women will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime, while one in 33 men will be a victim. Seventy-three percent of sexual assault victims were perpetrated by someone they knew and twenty-eight percent of victims were perpetrated by a partner.

No matter your gender or situation, reporting the incident is necessary.

These perpetrators should be stopped and punished for their acts. Reporting raises awareness to others about the threat and occurrence of the situation, alerts others in the area who may be at risk, helps the victim with the healing process and opens doors to resources for the victim to help with both the healing and legal processes. If you’re too nervous to go to the authorities, talk to someone you trust and are comfortable with.

Perhaps if they live close by, they can go with you to the authorities. No one should ever feel they are doing this alone so having someone with you to support you is a good idea.

The sooner you report, the better. By doing so shortly after the incident, you will be able to provide a more accurately detailed statement, giving more evidence to be considered in the case. Actions to protect you will also be taken sooner, helping to ensure your safety and support throughout the process.

As far as your privacy, it is no issue especially if you express this concern with the authorities and the university. The only time anyone should know you are the victim is if you tell them. The university does a great job of keeping the details confidential.

The university should be required to make a press release informing faculty and all students living on or off campus when a sexual assault occurs. The perpetrator can be a threat to others even in an isolated case.

There’s no excuse for not notifying the public of the situation at hand.

Reporting is a must If you have been sexually assaulted, it is very important that you come forward and report the incident.

Less than seventy percent of sexual assault incidents are reported.

My story As a victim of sexual assault, I can reassure you that reporting the incident is helpful in many ways. By reporting the incident, I was able to receive support from the University of South Dakota Police Department, Dean of

Sexual assault is something no one should have to experience. It is inappropriate, traumatizing and stressful. Yet, an average of 293,066 people, age 12 and older, are sexually assaulted each year in the United States. Sexual assault is a big deal on college campuses across the world, including at the University of South Dakota.

At this point, I had already told my parents and two close friends, one of which came with me to report. I was asked many questions about the incident and then asked to file a detailed written statement.

The university was then notified of the situation and I was called

by Grieve to speak with her about the incident where I was asked questions again. Both parties recommended I speak with a counselor and I was also told that because sexual assault is so serious and traumatizing, I could be immediately referred to and seen by a counselor because it was considered an emergency.

Action was taken immediately to inform my perpetrator that he was not to have contact with me nor enter my residence hall for any matters. I felt that this was exceptionally comforting because had he not obliged to this, I was allowed to call the police and he would have been removed and disciplined as necessary. Though I was still paranoid, it was a bit of a relief that helped me to feel a little bit safer. My RAs and residence hall director were also notified of the circumstances to protect me as well as keep an eye on me for my mental safety. Again, I took comfort in knowing that there were immediate measures taken to help me feel safer.

Through counseling here on campus, I have been able to get help mentally processing the event and the trauma that I have experienced.

I also have completed weekly surveys to evaluate the anxiety related to the posttraumatic stress of the event. Talking about the event, how I am doing and processing, and where the case is at has helped me to come to terms quicker and allowed me to reduce

the stress and anxiety I am feeling. I believe it is important to talk about the event with someone you can trust so you don’t hold in your emotions and put your mental health at greater risk.

I was also given pamphlets, booklets, and crisis line phone numbers to help me learn about the healing and the legal process.

The resource I found most helpful so far has been Domestic Violence Safe Options Services located right here in Vermillion. Though I just recently met with one of their coordinators, I was able to share my story, receive more pamphlets, and get a rundown on the legal side of things. I was also informed that they can have someone from their organization come with me to any meetings about the sexual assault so that I felt safe and supported and would have someone with me who’s familiar with the process.

There are so many benefits to reporting sexual assault that I hope this encourages others to come forward in the future. It can be scary and police are sometimes intimidating to talk to, but it’s worth it. You will feel protected, supported and safer after reporting.

Step up, speak up, speak out and raise awareness about sexual assault.

For years, females have been given the perfect persona of how to look, dress and present themselves. This affects women and girls of all ages and races.

African American women, for example, are given the idea that their hair is ugly — that curls are not something they need and that relaxing or straightening your hair will make it look better.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that women began embracing their natural hair type, which started a natural hair movement that encouraged African American women to go against the societal standards based on something as mundane as their hair.

The natural hair movement started gaining more attention in 2012, where celebrities and YouTube vloggers embraced their hair, and the YouTube vloggers began showing women how to take care of their hair naturally.

Unfortunately, there has always been the pressure for African American women to ignore their natural, curly textures, usually because they feel that it is harder to manage, or because the idea that curly hair is ugly.

This movement is helping them realize all hair types are beautiful, and that embracing it encourages people to accept it as it is.

I have curly hair, so I can sympathize with the women who go through the phase of when their families or friends tell them these things. While they usually mean it in a positive a manner, they don’t usually realize making fun of or ridiculing someone to do something to their hair can be hurtful.

I grew up hating my hair, similarly to many girls, because it was unkempt. My mother has straighter, wavier hair, so she had no idea how to take care of it. The easy way out was to straighten it, which only diminished the life of my hair.

The first relaxer I received was something I never want to experience again, because it hurt. At the time, I was happy to have hair that wasn’t my natural texture, which is very tightly coiled.

Nowadays, I take care of my hair and it’s the healthiest it has ever been. Yet there is still this idea that it would look better straight and that I should consider doing it “just so they can see what it looks like.”

It is not fair to suggest a woman whose hair is and always will be curly to change it. Even if people feel they’re not offending, they are.

African American women have felt the pressure far too long when it comes to their hair, so now that they can embrace it, there is no need from input of oblivious people that their hair would be “much better” a different texture.

This natural hair movement will only bring good for women to realize their hair is special and beautiful, just like any other hair, and give them an extra boost of confidence in their life.

President Barack Obama has visited every state in the union now as president, except South Dakota. And finally, on May 8, the President will deliver a commencement address at Lake Area Technical Institute. So why Watertown? “(Lake Area Tech is) one of the top community colleges in the nation,” The White House said in a statement. “And is recognized for rigorously preparing its students with the skills they need to compete in the 21st century economy.”

The President broke the news in an interview with KSFY TV anchor and USD alumna, Nancy Naeve. She told viewers April 13 the visit is because of Obama’s community college initiative.

“SD is proud of our technical institutes, and

our state is excited to welcome President @ BarackObama to @ LakeAreaTech!,” said Gov. Dennis Daugaard in a tweet April 13.

With USD’s commencement on May 9, I wonder why he isn’t speaking at the state’s only liberal arts college? Or at least visiting Vermillion?

Maybe on his visit he should take time to stop here. I think politics aside, it’s great to have a presidential visit. It’s good for the economy, it brings the national media to showcase a place probably not well-known to the rest of the country and it brings some sort of inspiration.

President George H. W. Bush went to West River, so maybe this time Obama should come to the east side of the state.

Why Vermillion?

Higher education. The President has been talking a lot about the cost higher education this year. The University of South Dakota has one of the best values for your education. It is very difficult to find a university of this caliber with tuition any less than USD. Venue. We have a venue

big enough for the President to visit — the DakotaDome or Aalfs Auditorium.

Leaders. Where can you find a place better in South Dakota that is educating the leaders of tomorrow? We have the only law school and medical school in the state.

However, I understand the White House’s reasons to visit Lake Area Tech. It supports what the President is pushing right now. What we don’t know is if Watertown will be his only visit. The White House said they have don’t have any more announcements at this time, but I imagine there will be another quick stop or two.

Healer’s Art course offers reprieve, teaches life skills for stressed students Ally Krupinsky

One class offered at the University of South Dakota’s Sanford School of Medicine does not cover traditional material. It begins with meditation.

The Healer’s Art is an elective course for firstyear medical students.

Patty Peters, the course director, said the class offers a reprieve from students’ everyday coursework.

“The reason we do it is at least partly because medical students are always supposed to be studying science and learning facts and figures, and they’re always in this realm of memorizing,” Peters said.

“So much of the time is spent in class memorizing and not really getting anything in the realm of what we call the art of medicine.”

Healer’s Art was designed in 1991 by Rachel Naomi Remen. It’s now offered in more than 70 medical schools in the U.S. and around the world, according to the course website.

The class covers patient and personal grief, unique cases in medicine, mindfulness techniques and how to fit students’ other hobbies into the rigorous schedule of medical school.

First-year medical student Sharleen Yuan said she took Healer’s Art to learn more about concepts that aren’t normally covered in her other classes.

Kelly Truesdale, a doctor at Sanford, graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. Truesdale didn’t take a course like Healer’s Art, but she said she would have if one had been available.

“That would be definitely a good thing for a lot of people, not just medical students,” Truesdale said.

“That would be rewarding.”

Truesdale’s advice for medical students is to find an activity to relieve stress even if it’s only for 30 minutes a day.

“It’s different for everybody,” Truesdale said. “I think you always get to a point your brain is kind of full, you can’t tolerate any more stuff and that’s kind

of when you have to take a step back and try to do something for yourself.”

Keeping work and home life separate is also very important, she said.

“You have to be able to separate yourself from the situation and still remain professional and not be too emotionally attached, but at the same time be attached enough,” Truesdale said. “That’s really something you can’t be taught at all. You have to know how careful to be in

that regard.”

In one of the later Healer’s Art sessions, Peters has students rewrite their own hippocratic oath.

“It’s really gratifying to us teachers, how these students do want to be very good doctors, they want to be there for their patients, they want to take time,” Peters said.

Yuan said the class has served as a reminder of the fundamental values in medicine.

“Sometimes, it’s very

easy to forget the reason why we’re here in the first place. It’s not so much a skill or a major concept I’ll take away from Healer’s Art, but more of a reminder,” Yuan said. “I want to always remember and keep with the awe of medicine, the awe of the human experience.”

In addition to hearing from the facilitators, students share their own experiences in smaller discussion groups. As a result, Peters said classmates get a lot closer to one another.

“They never otherwise get to sit down for this length of time and talk about more serious things,” Peters said.

The majority of students who take Healer’s Art have a positive experience, Peters said.

“It’s been an extremely powerful and emotional experience for me and, I believe for my classmates as well,” Yuan said. “In a few short hours, we’ve talked about deeply personal experiences and beliefs that I don’t think we would normally do in a typical classroom.”

Yuan said one of her favorite parts of Healer’s Art is listening to real-life situations that physicians have had to deal with.

“I definitely would recommend this class to future first-years,” Yuan said. “The only thing you’re giving up is your time, while you’re gaining a deeper understanding of medicine and humanity.”

University hires consultant to assess Commons space North Complex space to remain vacant in upcoming school year Phil Millar

The Commons in North Complex used to house the main dining hall on campus.

Now, it is a mostly-empty space, with the Beede Bump Convenience Store in one corner.

The University of South Dakota has hired a consultant from JBA Inc. to figure out how to best utilize this large space, said Roberta Ambur, USD vice president of Administration and Technology.

“We started conversations with JBA Inc. in Sept.

2012,” Ambur said. “We initially brought the company on board to evaluate our buildings, programs and space needs, along with identifying space planning parameters for future growth and providing support for the Strategic Master Plan of the campus.

Business owners and managers were contacted and advised that a report of the sale would be sent to the Department of Revenue for review.

Selling alcohol to a person 18-20 years old is a Class 2 Misdemeanor in South Dakota. The maximum penalty is thirty days imprisonment in a county jail and/or a $500 fine.

This was the second alcohol compliance check of the year. The first was conducted Feb. 17, and one of the five businesses failed.

The VPD’s Investigations Division completed 41 alcohol compliance checks at businesses in Vermillion in 2014. Ten of those business sold alcohol to the confidential informants.

Some of the employees requested to see the IDs of the confidential informants and sold the alcohol anyway, while some of the employees did not even ask to see their iden-

With the Beede Bump scheduled to move back to its old space next to the new Papa John’s franchise by August, the University has nothing planned for the Commons area for the 2015-16 school year.

The space next to the Beede-Mickelson entrance is being renovated, with the installation of a Papa John’s as well as a modernization of the Beede Bump space, Residence Hall Director Trevor Gillespie said.

“Last year, they started moving the Bump from the entrance to Beede-Mick because they were going to start renovation, putting in

Papa John’s and upgrading the Bump space to make it more modern or more accommodating to the current generation of students,” he said.

First-year Tyler Wilson wants to see the Commons space utilized in some way.

“I think they should renovate it. You can’t really tear it down, but you probably should make something out of it. Maybe make it an entertainment section, maybe make it a better lounge, split it up, make it more dorms,” Wilson said.

“There’s a lot of room in there, and it’s not going to be used for anything.”

Wilson also sees merit to using the area as a study space.

“It has a lot of open space, it could be divided up into sections. You could have group study or just cubicles for individual study like we had in high school,” Wilson said. “The library’s so far away. I know during the winter months, people would much rather go downstairs into that little area instead of walking all the way over to the library.”

“There’s about a 75-percent pass rate we are hovering over right

now,” Betzen said. “I’m looking at some things that we can potentially do to improve this rate, but nothing is in place right now.”

Compliance checks are conducted with the help of confidential informants between the ages of 18 and 20. The informants enter businesses that sell alcohol and attempt to purchase it, presenting their actual ID if asked to do so.

The use of underage volunteers is not allowed in all states and jurisdictions, and can be determined through law, ordinances and/or court decisions.

“You could do a theater, or two, because they have enough room,” Tate said.

Other states’ law enforcement perform alcohol purchase surveys, where a younger-looking adult is sent into a store, bar or restaurant to see if the retailer will ask for an ID before making a sale. Under this program, no enforcement action is taken.

The success rate of compliance checks of local businesses is not just a concern for the VPD, but also Vermillion’s city government. City Manager John Prescott said when it comes to license renewal, the law enforcement activity comes into play.

Businesses that have failed a compliance check have to complete a management plan to present during their license renewal. This step has been in place for the past five years. Business owners are also asked questions about how they are re-educating their staff to avoid further failures.

“We’d like to see 100 percent success rate, but we realize that staff will make mistakes — errors will happen,” Prescott said. “What is more of a concern is when there is a pattern of continued failures.”

Senior Brent Olinger, a community adviser in North Complex, would like to see the area utilized as a hang out space.

“It might be nice if it’s more student space to hang out. If they had couches and stuff, and maybe another TV for people to chill and hang

out in a bigger space together,” Olinger said. “I think sometimes our lounges downstairs get a little crowded, and people want more of a place to gather than just necessarily on their floor.”

USD alum Whitesock overcomes addiction, named a Bush Fellow Nathan Ellenbecker

David Whitesock’s undergraduate experience at the University of South Dakota was a little bit different than the rest of the student body’s.

“I lived in Brookman Hall, which as a 29-30 year old who lived in an apartment much of his life, living in that WHITESOCK environment was tough,” Whitesock said. “But my whole day could be focused on class and going to meetings — A.A. meetings.”

His time at the university gave him focus.

He was on probation following a felony charge and prior arrests. He had to take breathalyzer tests twice a day and meet with probation officers once a week. He was squeezing in class and extracurriculars between trips to the courthouse.

“It wasn’t until three years and graduating from here where I began to feel normal,” he said.

Whitesock is 10 years in remission from alcohol addiction. He has three degrees from USD, is a member of the State Bar of South Dakota and is a family man.

Now, he has another accomplishment — a Bush Fellowship.

Whitesock was named a Bush Fellow for his work with Face It TOGETHER, an organization that helps communities equip themselves to treat addiction survivors.

With the Bush Fellowship, Whitesock will fund trips to places like Stanford and Harvard to learn about executive leadership. He wants to use the Fellowship award to grow Face It TOGETHER and help others with similar addictions.

“That’s one reason he’s been so successful. He’s been forthright about his challenge,” Jack Marsh, retired president of the Al Neuharth Media Center,

said. “I believe in David Whitesock… It’s a great example of someone taking a second chance and becoming a model citizen.”

Marsh saw Whitesock’s potential when he came to USD. Whitesock joined The Volante under Marsh’s watch. He was also involved with the Student Counseling Center and Mock Trial.

His leadership and personal growth shined through.

“I’ve never actually met a person who is more efficient and effective at meeting personal goals,” said Sandy McKeown, USD associate professor of criminal justice and friend of Whitesock. “There’s a level of dedication and self-discipline and personal fortitude I’ve never seen in anybody else.”

Whitesock’s next personal goal is improving his executive leadership skills.

He said he sees that sort of leadership every day with Face It TOGETHER, but he wants to expand his learning. That’s where the trips at higher education institutions come into play.

“There are those people who naturally have that ability to be a CEO or a boss. Others don’t,” Whitesock said. “Whether you have the natural skill, there’s so much you can learn from others.”

Learning through opportunities provided by the Bush Fellowship is right down Whitesock’s alley, Marsh said. Marsh said he saw Whitesock embrace mentorships and open up his story to aid in his recovery.

“He has turned his life around,” Marsh said. “He has got his life back.”

Whitesock said the road to recovery has been tough every day for 10 years, but he is always focused on giving back, and that his peers at Face It Together inspire him.

“In the work that I do with Face It TOGETHER, I get to work with people who have lived a much rougher journey than I have,” he said. “They get to touch people one-onone every day. What they don’t get to do is go out and present their story to groups. I’d like to do that.”

Aalfs Auditorium was filled with speakers, lights and loud music April 13, but Hoodie Allen concert-goers only filled about half of the floor seats available at the Campus Activities Board’s annual spring concert.

Senior Katty McNeal, president of the CAB, said about 500 tickets had been sold online before doors opened at 8 p.m. She said since there were not many people in the auditorium, she was hoping more people would be buying tickets at the door the night of the show. CAB allotted 1,100 tickets for the show.

“We’re not really sure what is going on with that,” McNeal said.

The concert was originally slated for March 19 but was then rescheduled for May 5 after the artist was rushed to the hospital March 11 for a “medical emergency.” The show was rescheduled yet again due to complaints that the new date would interfere with finals week schedules. In the end, it was decided the concert would be held April 13.

However, McNeal said with all the changes that took place, she thought the attendance was decent.

Last week, CAB announced they would be giving away special prizes to the purchasers of the 300th, 500th, 750th and 1000th tickets. Arianne Wunder, CAB vice president, said they only awarded the first prize — a meet-and-greet with Hoodie Allen.

Hoodie Allen, under a more than $38,000 contract for his appearance at USD, said he appreciated the crowd for showing up despite all of the rescheduling that took place.

Conference puts women and gender issues at forefront Braley Dodson

Graduate students Haley Schwenk and Elise Hocking presented the results of their research regarding college students’ attitudes toward workers requesting paternity and maternity leave during the Biennial Women and Gender Research Conference April 9.

Their results showed something few audience members expected. College students considered women who request maternity leave to be more dominant, and men who requested paternity leave to be warm, caring and supportive.

“People saw them as a quality employee or dedicated to their job,” Hocking said.

Schwenk said the results of the study could represent a generational shift.

“The view of the more traditional roles of men being breadwinners and women being the homemakers has shifted in more recent years,” Schwenk said.

The session drew in four projects from students at the University of South Dakota, the University of Wyoming and the University of North Dakota. Topics varied from the wage gap and role of the energy sector to a literature review analyzing how higher education impacts the gender wage gap.

“The idea is to look at each other’s research and be inspired,” said Cindy Stuckman-Johnson, a member of the conference steering committee.

The film was originally going to be screened by the Campus Activities Board on March 22, but was cancelled because CAB was “not fully prepared to show it and facilitate the conversation that would go along with the movie,” said CAB President Katty McNeal. The Association for the Advancement of Women’s Rights then wanted to sponsor the film, but then later decided to sponsor the film “The Cherokee Word for Water” instead.

The Cross Media Council, which comprises of Coyote News, The Volante, KAOR Radio, Coyote Communications and Coyote Creative, sponsored the facilitated discussion following the film.

the Council of Muslims Facing Tomorrow, was featured in the documentary. Raza introduced the film and answered discussion questions that followed.

Raza said it’s urgent for a discussion to follow the film.

“For many people in North America, these issues are new and it’s shocking,” Raza said.

To Raza, education on the issues the film addresses is vital.

“Speaking the truth should never be something anyone has any fears about, and I’ve never worried about whether people are going to like it or not,” Raza said. “This is a reality, and you can either accept it, or you can not accept it. Not everybody will do something about it, but it is important to have it out there.”

She was aware of the controversy surrounding the film at USD. “This controversy that took place here on campus would not have happened if they had

actually seen the film and talked to me about it before they decided they want to censor it,” Raza said.

The discussion that followed the film started with a heated exchange between audience member Elizabeth Simmons and Raza regarding the Clarion Project’s involvement in the documentary.

Junior Mary Geraets agreed with the decision to show the film.

“It’s great they decided to show this film because we should be treated as adults that handle this stuff and be exposed to it,” Geraets said.

Sophomore Dillon Kober was drawn to the screening because of the controversy.

After viewing the film and listening to the discussion, he was shocked.

“It’s something I want to show my mom and my sisters and say this is something that’s going on that everybody needs to hear about,” Kober said.

but it meant a lot to him that people still came to see him.

Hoodie Allen performed for a little more than an hour, and then came back to do an encore of his two most popular songs, “All About It” and “No Interruption.” There was also a dance competition to see who would win jerseys signed by Hoodie Allen.

Sophomore Alyx Phillips said she came to the concert because she is a Hoodie Allen fan and he is a big enough celebrity to garner area attention.

“Yeah, it was awesome,” Phillips said.

Students from other schools and towns also came to see the performance.

Brent Van den Bussche attends Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls.

“It passed my expectations,” Van den Bussche said. “I didn’t expect the live band.”

First-year Kaela Dougherty had heard some of Hoodie Allen’s more popular songs before coming to the concert, but she said the concert didn’t live up to her expectations.

“It was something to do,” Dougherty said. “It was a Monday night and not a lot of people were there.”

The music from concert was not the only sounds USD students attending the event heard.

Sirens from emergency vehicles could also be heard as first responders from the Vermillion Police Department, University Police Department and Clay County Emergency Services rushed to Slagle Hall at about 10:28 p.m.

UPD Lt. Jef Rice said his officers were responding to a “medical call.”

One individual was taken out of the building on a stretcher and was loaded onto an ambulance before the vehicle left.

Herbster said part of the weight room will be taken over by the construction as well.

“If we look up into the weight room right now, certainly our strength coach is going to lose his office, but we’re also going to lose square footage up there,” he said. “I got to believe we’re going to lose more than an office. We’re going to lose some amount of square footage, so we’ll just have to reposition some things and redirect some of those activities.”

Herbster also said athletes will be disrupted by the process.

“You can’t help but have some disruption during a construction process, especially when you’re kind of going through a wall,” he said. “What we’re trying to work with the contractors right now on is how will they be affected.”

Junior cross country and track runner Mubarik Musa

said the construction disruption is best to happen during the summer.

“Summer is the time to do it,” Musa said. “Other than summer, once we get back in the fall season, the weight room is often overcrowded.”

The new track and soccer field should be completed next spring, Wilcox said.

“The track and soccer facility is supposed to be open for a track meet in April or May of 2016,” Wilcox said. “A lot of that facility will come together over the summer.”

Wilcox said the bleachers at the track and soccer facility will be installed over this summer. The track surface will also be completed over this summer.

Herbster said despite any setbacks or disruptions to any activities, both athletes and coaches have been understanding.

“We’ve talked to our coaches and our studentathletes and they’ve been really good. We know through this process there’s going to be periods of being uncomfortable, put out and being inconvenienced,” Herbster said. “The contractors have been good to work with us.”

Speech and debate team to compete at national tournament Megan Street

Five members of the University of South Dakota speech and debate team will travel to the University of Ohio in Athens, Ohio to compete in a nationwide tournament April 16-20.

The team, which is affiliated with the American Forensics Association, currently competes in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, and attended eight regional tournaments this year.

Next year, the team will begin attending tournaments in Nebraska.

This is not the only change coming next year.

Jesse Mohling, the team’s current coach and a graduate student at USD, will hand over the reins to Shane Semmler, associate professor of communications, beginning next year.

Semmler jumpstarted the team in 2012 but took a break from coaching this year to focus on teaching

and research.

Semmler said the national tournament will be very competitive.

“There’s a lot of pageantry at the national tournament,” Semmler said. “The National Forensics Association’s tournament is the oldest national individual events competition in the country, and they take pride in that.”

The five students will compete in events such as extemporaneous speaking, an event in which students have 30 minutes to prepare a seven-minute speech about a randomly-chosen current event.

Another event is dramatic interpretation, in which participants portray a character in a serious literary speech.

The students will become part of a National Assembly which “will determine some of the rules of the activity,” Semmler said.

The members of Hippo Campus are not even old enough to drink, but they’re on the brink of becoming the new face of the Indie rock genre with the recognition they’ve been getting from their latest extended play (EP) and performances.

There’s been a lot of buzz about the twin-city band. They performed at the pinnacle of all Minneapolis venues — First Avenue — for a showcase of the Best New Bands of 2014, which was hosted by the Current, a radio station based in St. Paul, Minn.

Their EP “Bashful Creatures” delivers an urge to tap your fingers against anything if you’re in a setting where it’s not appropriate to dance. The EP is 20 minutes long, composed of six tracks. It was released Nov. 18, 2014, and I would recommend it for anyone who’s looking for new music to listen to.

The characters and worlds created by Dr. Seuss will soon be coming to life at the University of South Dakota.

“Seussical,” featuring many of Dr. Seuss’ classic books, will be performed April 16 to April 19, and April 22 to April 27 in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. The musical play is $5 for USD students who bring their student IDs. Callie Hisek, director of the musical, said this is her first play at USD as an interim instructor. She has been planning the show since October when she met with her design crew.

team. From there you have to find a sort of line to bring the play together.”

Hisek said this can be one of the most challenging parts of the process, since everyone comes to the table

with differing ideas and opinions.

“It’s a lot of research and listening and collaborating with your design team,” Hisek said.

Once a concept is nailed

down, the set building crews — who create the actual sets used in the show — come into the process.

Scott Mollman, a professor of design technology and the production manager for the show, said he takes all of the drawings for how the sets are designed and turns them into construction drawings. Then he and his students build the sets.

“The specialty projects like the Horton Tree, that’s more of an automation, I built it by myself,” Mollman said. “This Horton Tree has been a lot of fun to build.

The tricky part of the tree is that it has to be up in the air when the bird sits on it and then it has to flex down when Horton sits on it. But the nest on the tree has to stay level. So I came up with this idea that flexes the branch up and down.

More than 450 University of South Dakota students will fill the Muenster University Center with presentations of their research this week.

Sarah Wittmuss, director of the Center for Academic and Global Engagement (CAGE), said there will be 80 more students at the 23rd annual IdeaFest than there were last year. The event takes place all day April 15-16 in the MUC. “IdeaFest is a celebration of undergraduate, graduate and professional students’ academic engagement, creative scholarship and research,” Wittmuss said.

Wittmuss said students present posters, take part in panel discussions and others put on theatrical

performances during the two-day event.

To take part in IdeaFest, students have to put together an abstract and submit it to CAGE by March.

“IdeaFest always amazes me in the variety of different academic venues our students are developing projects,” Wittmuss said. “People often think of student research as just what happens in a lab, but I think IdeaFest illustrates that assumption is wrong.”

Junior Emily Roberson will be presenting her research on seed libraries and sustainability.

“It’s really making sure there’s enough resources to sustain our quality of life now and in the future,” Roberson said.

Public seed libraries allow people to pick up seeds, grow plants and then

bring back those seeds so others can grow plants.

This is just one aspect of sustainability that Roberson is interested in.

Last year, Roberson attended a sustainability conference in Pittsburgh, Penn. She said she learned a lot about sustainability and wanted to share that information with others.

“Part of the reason was to get other people to look at conferences that have to do with sustainability and this was a really big youth empowerment one,” Roberson said.

Roberson presented a poster during the poster session of IdeaFest in 2014.

While it was a bit untraditional since she didn’t actually do undergraduate research, she said she benefited in other ways.

“It was really good to see what other people were doing in different disciplines,” Roberson said. “It kind of opened my eyes to the kind of research that goes on here.”

Roberson plans on participating in IdeaFest again and is currently waiting to hear if she will receive the U.Discover Scholarship to work on undergraduate research involving sustainability. This scholarship would allow Roberson to do undergraduate research for 10 weeks this summer.

“It gave me some ideas of where I could and what I could do,” Roberson said.

First-year Tomas Kamenik is an accounting major and will be presenting on stock markets around the world and whether they correlate with each other.

“I applied what I learned in class, because it related to the class,” Kamenik said.

“The most work was calculating the data.”

Kamenik said he also decided to participate to meet other people doing research, especially from the business school.

“It’s really cool to see what your peers are doing outside of class,” Roberson said.

Jacquelynne Eccles is the keynote speaker for IdeaFest and has conducted extensive research on gender, ethnicity and social development. She will be speaking at 4 p.m.

Ending on a high note Music majors hold recitals to graduate Malachi Petersen

To earn some degrees students have to submit a paper or project to graduate, but for music majors a special requirement must be fulfilled.

Every year junior and senior music majors at the University of South Dakota perform at both vocal and instrumental music recitals to fulfill their graduation requirements.

Rick Rognstad, professor of music at USD, said the recitals performed by music students are specific to whether students are music performance majors or music education majors.

“It depends on the degree program that the student has chosen,” Rognstad said. “The senior recital for (music education majors) amounts to what we call a half recital.”

During “half recitals,” students generally pair up with someone else and the performances last about 30 minutes per student.

The acts for music performance majors, however, usually run about an hour long and are performed individually. “(The National Association of Schools of Music) require that every student have some sort of chamber music experience and it can be on recital or on someone else’s recital,”

Mollman said the people who work behind the scenes love helping to create the world of Dr. Seuss’ imagination. “(My favorite part of this job is) making all of this magic happen,” Mollman said Mollman said there’s a sense of competition to be just as good as schools of larger population who have larger production budgets.

“I really like doing it for the audience,” Mollman said.“It’s nice to put on these big productions that are on par with bigger productions. We really push ourselves to put the product out there.”

Austin Vetter, a first-year musical theatre major, is portraying Horton the elephant in the musical. The actors for the show were selected in January and have been preparing since then. “(I prepare for my role by doing) a lot of vocal things, I sing a lot. I also get into the emotions of the show,” Vetter said.

Senior Ceci Quintero is also acting in “Seussical.”

She will be playing Horton’s neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz.

“She is a very plain, kind of girl-next-door, she ends up having a feisty personality with a lot of spirit,” Quintero said. “I think with

James Cooper, a second year graduate assistant and musical performance major, said his recital will consist of a mix of traditional and non-traditional songs that follow a story he specifically wrote for the recital.

“You’ll hear things that are from the Baroque period, the Classical period, the Romantic period — so following all of music history. I think my oldest piece is from 1680 something and my newest piece is from this year,” Cooper said.

Cooper said each of his 16 chosen pieces were “painstakingly” selected to go with the plot of his story. The hardest part of preparing for his recital, he said, has been memorizing his songs, which will be sung in French, English, Italian and German.

“Traditionally, a recital shows off your studies throughout your time at whatever university that you’re attending,” he said.

“I don’t like the idea of just a check box recital where you just do things that you’ve done while you’re here.”

Rognstad said the recitals the students perform are graded and added into their GPA, but the grading takes place before the recital during a separate event where the student

Quintero said one of the challenges of acting in the musical is the pressure on the actors to portray characters from lovable childhood stories. “(The musical is) so silly and I think being able to bring characters kids know from books and stories to life and creating that world is really intimidating but also really freeing as an actor,” Quintero said.

She said while she is passionate about her work, the most rewarding part of the process is seeing how the audience reacts to the performance.

“Making people laugh (is my favorite thing about acting),” Quintero said.

Acting is also one of Vetter’s passions in life as well.

“My favorite part of being in ‘Seussical’ is probably how fun the show is.

It’s all zany and fun rhymes and fun music. I also like being able to take someone in the audience and have the show be an escape for them,” Vetter said.

Hisek said directing the musical is enjoyable because of the people she works with.

“I love the audition process, because I always have an idea of how I see a character, how I hear a character. I love being surprised by what the actors bring,” Hisek said. “It’s quirky and fun, and if you love Dr. Seuss you’ll love this.”

“There’s what’s called a recital hearing and that’s where three committee members the student has chosen get together and we hear significant portions of the recital,” Rognstad said. “(We listen to) if they’re playing the music well, and generally they do. Many of the students choose to do a junior recital and some even a sophomore recital.”

Kaitlynn Wolfe, a junior music education and psychology major, said she is performing at a junior recital even though it is not required for her major.

“I only need a senior recital, but my teacher and I decided last year that it would be a good idea to do a junior recital,” Wolfe said.

Wolfe said her April 13 recital was split into two separate parts. For the first

part she played a flute, and for the second part she played a saxophone. During one section of her performance, Wolfe played in a quintet, or a five person group.

“They’re my friends, so I kind of asked them last year if they would play in a quintet for me so then we kind of finalized it this year,” she said.

“Bashful Creatures” accurately summarizes the basics of the ups and downs of life. Through uplifting words and “trance-dental” instrumentals, the band is able to make an emotional connection with the listener.

Hippo Campus is currently on tour supporting the Mowgli’s; however, it appears it won’t be long until they venture out on their first headlining tour based on their recent success. They will be performing at Lollapalooza later

this year.

It will be interesting to see how they can tell other stories with more than six tracks. The band hasn’t yet released a full length record, but there is much anticipation and desire for it.

The bottom line is Hippo Campus is a group of new kids on the block, and it will be exciting to follow them as they progress in their music. Listeners should be prepared to see the band’s name in big neon lights in the future.

On average, a day at the event can run anywhere from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and when students are not competing in a round, they are expected to observe others.

“It’s really exciting at the national tournament because it’s the best people in the country,” Semmler said.

The previous program was discontinued in 2006 but was restarted in 2012 after a few of Semmler’s students showed interest in participating in Parliamentary debate on a regional level. Semmler and the team attended one tournament that year.

A lack of members caused the program to falter last year, Mohling said.

“It hasn’t been the most successful,” Mohling said.

“But then this year we really grew the program a little bit, and it went from one to five qualifiers in a lot more events, so it’s been building up pretty nicely.”

Sophomore Rebecca Froehlich, president of the speech and debate team, said she decided to join the team to better her communication skills.

“I was really bad at public speaking and afraid of doing it, so I thought, ‘I’m going to have to learn to do it later on in my career, so I should learn to do it now,’” Froehlich said. “Once I was actually on the team, I started to really enjoy it.”

Froehlich was the sole qualifier for last year’s national tournament and will be attending again this year. She believes the program is a very positive experience.

“Going to the national tournament last year was exciting, and it was one of the reasons that I wanted to continue doing it,” Froehlich said. “You get to see what other people from other parts of the country think about certain issues, or what they’re passionate about, and you get to meet new people.”

Being in speech and debate helps students on an intellectual level, Mohling said.

“If you’re in speech and debate you have better academic success,” Mohling said. “You can take what you learn in classes and apply it, and it just kind of rounds out the whole academic experience.”

Froehlich said South Dakota is a great place for orators to grow and believes the future of the team will be bright.

“South Dakota has a lot of really good high schoolers in forensics in both debate and in interp,” Froehlich said. “It’s fertile ground for teams. I think it can only get better at USD.” Semmler said seeing the strongest debaters graduate last year was hard on the team but opened a window for more members to partake in individual oral interpretation events.

“We have a very stable team right now,” Semmler said. “We have a core group of students who are very involved in the activity and are willing to work hard for the activity, we have the core support necessary for next year, and so I’m very optimistic when I say I think the team will have success in the future.”

The majority of the group is young, Mohling said, and this will help the team grow in the future.

“Of all the students on the team, two of them are sophomores and the rest are freshmen, so there is a lot of potential for them to grow over the next three or four years and become better speakers,” Mohling said.

“Expectations are really high, and I think we have a good core group right now, and if we keep adding year after year, it could be kind of a formidable team within this region.”

The University of South Dakota Men’s Rugby Club team has been trying to build its roster back up to field a full squad over the past two years.

David Middlebrooks, the club’s team president, has been involved with the club rugby team at USD since 2007, and said the numbers have declined greatly since he joined.

“When I first got involved with the rugby team I would say we had at least 20 guys on the squad, and just last year we only had three guys on the team,” Middlebrooks said.

Middlebrooks and the club’s vice president, Kevin McLaughlin, began heavily recruiting last fall to reverse this trend.

“We really targeted freshmen in the fall to come give it a shot,” McLaughlin said. “Now we have about 12 guys on the roster, so hopefully we can build upon that next year.”

Middlebrooks and McLaughlin said getting first-years involved is the easiest way to increase numbers.

“Freshmen are looking to get involved and get to know people when they get to campus,” Middlebrooks said. “Once they try rugby out, most tend to really like the sport and then tell their friends about it.”

Along with recruiting first-years to join the club, Middlebrooks believes the rugby team needs to get involved in the fraternity life again.

When Middlebrooks first joined the Men’s Rugby Club, he said the numbers were greater because the club had strong involvement with the fraternities on campus.

“It was so easy to get the word about the team spread when we were involved with the fraternities here on campus, because there’s so many guys in that network” Middlebrooks said. “I’m hoping getting the club involved back with the fraternities in the future to help us get our numbers up but also show guys a new sport to play.”

Where did it originate?

Rugby football is a style of football that developed at Rugby School and was one of many versions of football played at English public schools during the 19th century.

How do you play?

The aim is to score more points than the opposition by scoring tries. Each try is worth five points. This means getting the ball into the “ingoal area.”

Teams try to get the ball into the ingoal area by carrying and kicking the ball down the field.

Spring football ushers in ‘new mentality’ Emily Niebrugge

In the midst of spring football, coaches and players are taking full advantage of the opportunity for everyone to play, are figuring out new schemes and plays, and are working to instill a new game mindset and mentality.

“We’re just trying to change the mentality and the mindset to where (we) strive to be the best in this conference, the best in this nation,” senior wide receiver Eric Shufford said. “To compete at this level that’s just something that you have to do — you have to have it in your mind and in your head that you’re going to be competitive.”

Luckily, that mentality may come a bit easier for the team with the advantage of two new coaches, Marty Biagi and South Dakota alum Collin Prosser. Biagi will coach cornerbacks, while Prosser will coach tight ends and offensive tackles.

With the spring season well underway, the University of South Dakota Club Baseball team can finally call the Prentis Park baseball field home.

While baseball is not a sanctioned sport at USD, the club allows any student who has a baseball background to join the team and continue playing the sport.

Senior catcher Sam Parkinson said the team is still fairly young, as a lot of the older players graduated last year.

“I would say a majority of the team is mostly freshmen and sophomores with only seven returning guys from last year’s team,” he said.

Junior first basemen Yvon Minogue was named 2015 Louisville Slugger/ NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for the period which ended April 12. Minogue is the first Coyote to earn such an honor.

During the week’s five games, Minogue drove in eight runs, scored 14 times, hit three home runs, three doubles and a triple. Minogue’s doubles set her at 21 for the season, and broke a 22-year-old USD record for doubles in a season. She is also the nation’s leader in doubles.

TENNIS Coyote tennis drops 4-3 decision to South Dakota St. South Dakota dropped a 4-3 decision to South Dakota State on Saturday in Brookings.

South Dakota State (11-6, 3-1 Summit) grabbed the doubles point and held a 1-0 advantage headed into singles play, where each team picked up three points.

South Dakota (7-8, 3-3 Summit) scored its three points in No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles.

Undefeated in Summit League action, sophomore Yuliya Sidenko defeated Jackrabbit Ffion Davies 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot to improve her overall record to 14-1.

Sophomore Dragana Brankovic and senior Yamini Reddy are both on a two-game winning streak in league action. Brankovic scored 6-4, 6-1 to win at No. 4 and Reddy scored 6-4, 7-5 to win at the No. 6 spot.

earned the honor for each month during the indoor track and field season.

A native of Montego Bay, Jamaica, Lewin is March’s Athlete of the Month after an All-American performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He ran 7.81 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to take eighth place and garner first-team honors.

In the preliminaries the day before, Lewin set a new school record of 7.77 seconds.

Lewin was also named the Summit League Indoor Track Athlete of the Year during the month of March.

FOOTBALL USD’s Jarod Dodson named head coach at Alfred State Jarod Dodson has been named the new head football coach at Alfred State after an extensive search. Dodson, who will begin his duties this week, takes over for Mick Caba who retired at the end of February.

“I am honored to lead this historic program into this next chapter. I’m both excited and humbled to work with the dynamic leadership team here beginning with President Sullivan along with Dr. Higgins. I look forward to enthusiastically engaging myself and tapping into the magical energy of our students here at Alfred State!”

Dodson has been in coaching ranks since 1998 and has held positions in all levels of NCAA football.

He most recently has served as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Before Emily Brigham could even fathom the idea of collecting gold medals as a collegiate pole vaulter and jumper, she dedicated her life to a much different sport — gymnastics.

“I was a gymnast for a long time, until I heard gymnasts make good jumpers,” Brigham said. “My friends started track & field and ended up getting me into it freshman year of high school.”

The transition was smooth, Brigham said. However, little did she know that in 2012, she would enter her senior year as the top-ranked pole vaulter in the U.S. with a height of 13 inches and six and one-fourth inches.

By the time she left high school, the Shawnee, Kan. native would hold the Kansas high school record with a height of 13 feet and seven inches.

Once she broke the state record

in her junior year, Brigham said that’s when she realized she might be able to take her talents to the college level.

“I knew a couple of good pole vaulters that go to USD. I liked Vermillion, it isn’t too small of a town, but didn’t feel huge. So I made the call to come here,” she said.

Fast-forward to present day, Brigham is a sophomore at the University of South Dakota, and the acclaimed jumper is making an impact as a member of the Coyote track & field team.

So far in the 2015 outdoor season, Brigham has netted a pair of first place victories at the Sioux Falls Duals and a second place victory in the pole vault at the Bobcat Invitational last month.

This came after a successful indoor season, capped off with a pair of bronze medals in pole vault and long jump at the Summit League Indoor Championships.

Brigham said juggling her studies

while trying to remain on top of her game, as well as intermittent shifts as an EMT in Vermillion, comes down to perseverance and admiration for the sport.

“I love it. I like pole vaulting a lot.

Everyone has days like, ‘Why why am I doing this?’ Then you have a good day, and you jump high and it starts clicking,” she said. “You have to get through the hard times, but when you do them, you realize it was all worth it.”

When it’s all said and done, Brigham said jumping is all about the microscopic technicalities leading up to a jump, which poses an intriguing, distinct challenge that keeps her on her toes.

“The littlest thing can make a jump go wrong, your step is four inches. It’s such a technical event that a slight misstep can ruin a jump,” she said. “When I’m running, I can always tell. “ Follow reporter Austin Ashlock on Twitter @A_Ashlock33

Clinic gives female fans inside look at USD football USD football holds second women’s clinic Emily Niebrugge

Women with the desire to get an inside look at Coyote football will have that opportunity during the second women’s clinic from 5:30-8:45 p.m. in the DakotaDome April 17.

Women of all ages will have the chance to listen and practice drills with University of South Dakota coaches and players to get a behind-the-scenes look at football rules, plays and other processes involved in the sport.

“A lot of female fans who love Coyote football and football in general who want to know more, this gives them an opportunity to see what the players go through,” said Luke Groth, director of operations and on-campus recruiting. “A lot of females don’t know what preparation the players go through — they just see the final process on Saturday. Here they can learn about the process, in the weight room, film in the classroom and offense and defense.”

Eric Shufford, senior wide receiver, participated in the clinic last year and will also help this year.

He said it was a good

experience last year and is looking forward to going over technicalities for the women who enjoy football but may not know all of the rules and regulations.

“It was a great opportunity to have them come in and learn and be able to see everything,” he said. “A lot of women don’t really get that chance, and that made me appreciate that they wanted to learn.

That’s why it’s so fun — they’re so interested.”

Last year about 75 women attended the clinic, and Groth said they are hoping to have a few more attend this year.

The dates did change this year because of the Coyote auction, and Groth said that could impact the attendance of some fans who aren’t able to travel to Vermillion often.

This year, Coyote officials will also talk about the football team’s new uniforms and the process the university went through in getting them, as well as what the NCAA is juggling regarding the targeting penalty.

The penalty requires players who target and contact defenseless opponents above the shoulders be ejected, according to the NCAA website.

“That’s confusing to a lot of people,” Groth said. “So we’ll go over what targeting is, why it’s bad and why the NCAA is trying to stop that.”

When asked if the clinic has been perceived as offensive, Groth said the program has been wellreceived and that he has not heard any complaints.

“With football being a male-dominated sport, and men having played

football and having been a fan their whole life, this gives women a chance to experience it differently than their husbands do,” Groth said. “We want to include everyone in our fan base.”

“My biggest draw to rugby was being able to compete again,” Audino said. “Also, as a former football player, I liked the idea of playing a contact sport again.”

No matter the reason why someone decides to join the club, Middlebrooks and McLaughlin said teaching the new members the sport of rugby is a challenge.

“Rugby isn’t a hard concept for the guys to understand,” Middlebrooks said. “The most challenging part about the sport is all the rules involved in each circumstance.”

McLaughlin said most of the guys who join the club either played football in high school or at least understand football, and the biggest

the club their number one priority. The team does manage to get together and practice two to three times a week to stay sharp.

“Even though we love to play baseball, we really don’t make it our only priority, class always comes first,” senior outfielder Chris Zimmer said.

The team started the season this year with three losses against a tough Iowa State, but its latest games have proved players are getting better, Parkinson said.

“We really started to play better as a team, especially against Mount Marty’s baseball team and continued playing well against the University of Sioux Falls,” he said.

Even though the team seems to have hit its stride so far in the year, Parkinson and the other players believe once new players get to know their teammates and the swing of things, the team will be more competitive as it prepares to host a doubleheader against the University of Iowa at

“We have a lot of new players that are trying to build chemistry with the rest of the team,” Zimmer said.

Jhett Cihak, first baseman, said he enjoys the atmosphere of the team.

“I like (that it’s) a bunch of guys hanging out, getting a chance to compete in baseball again — (it’s) what this team is all about,” Cihak said. “It is safe to say that I have met a lot of good friends on this team as well.”

“We’re not going to run a complex offense — there’s not a thousand plays. We’re going to try and be basic in what we do offensively so our guys can play fast.”

Focusing on the instillation of offense, defense and special teams, head coach Joe Glenn said spring football isn’t about winning offense or defense, but more about learning the assignments, positions and the “South Dakota way.”

“We’re really not here to beat South Dakota,” he said.

“We’re going to scrimmage a little bit and get after it, offense against defense, but every time there’s a win, there’s a loss. If the defense wins, the offense loses. If the offense wins, the defense loses. (...) they’re learning what we do and getting a chance to learn our system.”

With a couple of players out currently, Shufford said that has opened the door for the younger players to step up.

“Because it’s spring ball, we’re just trying to get everyone acclimated and get some of the young guys the chance to actually be a part of our defenses and our offenses,” he said. “They’re

adjustment a lot of the guys have to learn is that rugby never stops.

“In football, the play is over after the player has been tackled,” McLaughlin said. “In rugby, you don’t stop after the tackle, the play keeps going on.”

For Audino, the continuous aspect of rugby was one of the hardest things to adapt to.

“I played football all my life and you always knew when the play was over,” Audino said. “In rugby, the play continues all the time.

It took me a while to get that concept into my head.”

No matter the player, McLaughlin and Middlebrooks said it takes a while for guys to understand the game. Practice and competing consistently is the best way to learn the game, they said.

The rugby team practices twice a week at the field north of Highway 50 and works to

learn the sport and practice proper technique and fundamentals.

Besides practicing, the team plays five or six games a semester and even competes at tournaments on weekends, if possible.

Because USD only has 12 members on its team, it combines with other teams or players to complete a full squad of 15 members.

McLaughlin and Middlebrooks are hoping that with their recruiting efforts the numbers for their team will increase and they will be able to compete as a full side without having to borrow or combine with other teams in the future.

“We have 12 guys now and need only three or four more for a full squad next year,” McLaughlin said. “We hope more will join the rugby team, because they’ll learn a new sport and hopefully will love it like we do.”

More than anything, Glenn said it’s been good to see the emotion and spirit in everyone already.

“Everybody’s playing with a great heart,” he said.

“They’re hustling and running to the ball, playing with a lot of emotion, and that’s what you love to see as a coach. Even though it’s in the throws of spring ball and no one really enjoys spring ball because you don’t have any games, the team has shown a lot of pep, a lot of spirit, a lot of hoorah, rallying to the football and having fun with it.”

That heart and spirit is what Shufford is hoping will create a winning program for the University of South Dakota in the upcoming season.

“As long as we keep pushing each other to make each other better, we shouldn’t be worried about competing with each other,” he said. “We should be more worried about making each other better, and we have to get everything we can get from every player on this team. It’s honestly just us trying to change the culture and the mindset here. We don’t like losing — we hate it — so we’re done with that.”
