VOICES Corp. launched emergency transitional housing to serve unhoused youth in our community.

Since July 2023, The Blossom House, a 90 day emergency shelter for male youth ages 14-17, has served nine young men.

Jake’s Place, consisting of 10 total units for 18-22 year olds in need of shelter, will open November 2023.

We project over 400 graduates by year end of the Power & Promise Youth Leadership Development Program. Our list of graduates include cohorts from local schools, community based organizations, as well as the Marion County Jail.

We have served over 80 families in our Family Liberation Program and currently have 42 families actively receiving services.

VOICES for the last 6 years has maintained a recidivism rate of under 10%.

HOMELESSNESS & OUR YOUTH In Indiana, 13.8% of children ages 1 to 17 moved sometime between 2020 and 2021, slightly higher than the previous year’s rate of 13.7%. Frequent moves are often associated with harmful impacts on children’s behavior, social skills, and academic success.

Homeless children and youth are difficult to count because they usually change residences and schools often, and many youth–especially unaccompanied teens–try to hide the fact that they are homeless.

The McKinney-Vento Act defines homelessness as lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes students living in motels, trailer parks, campgrounds, emergency shelters, or sharing housing with others.

Marion County, at 2.1%, ranks in the top 10 for the percentage of homeless enrolled students.

Black youth face an 83% increased risk of homelessness than their white peers.

Youth who do not complete high school are 3.5 times more likely to experience homelessness than peers who completed a high school diploma.

40% of the 15,000 people who become homeless in Indianapolis each year live in families with children.

The average age of a homeless person in the United States is seven years old.

Four out of ten homeless adults on any given night have children with them.
