BJP well on top in Maharashtra, Haryana: exit polls GUARANTEED Absolute Lowest Prices !

New Delhi/Mumbai/Chandigarh (IANS): The BJP was within striking distance of power in both Haryana and Maharashtra, exit polls said Wednesday at the end of keenly fought assembly elections that pitted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party against all key players in the two states. Results will be announced on Sunday.

Various exit polls gave the Bharatiya Janata Party a margin of 42-54 seats in the 90-member Haryana assembly and 124-151 seats in the 288-strong Maharashtra legislature.

The Congress, which had ruled Haryana for the last 10 years, was predicted to end up with just 10-18 seats. In Maharashtra, the exit polls gave the Shiv Sena, the BJP's former ally for 25 years, 51-77 seats, Congress 27-48 seats and Nationalist Congress Party 28-41 seats. The last two had ruled the state for three terms since 1999 before their alliance ended last month.

While some exit polls predicted BJP getting a majority in the two states, others projected it as the single largest party, a few seats short of a simple majority.

The bitter battle for Maharashtra ended Wednesday evening with over 64 percent of the 8.35 crore electorate voting. Polling also took place for the Beed Lok Sabha seat where a bypoll was necessitated following the death in June of central minister Gopinath Munde.

In Haryana, the voters Wednesday set a new record with over 75.5 percent of the 1.63 crore electorate exercising their franchise, perking up the BJP's hopes to come to power on its own.

This is the highest voting in Haryana assembly polls since 1967, chief electoral officer Shrikant Walgad said. The previous record of maximum polling was 72.65 percent in 1967. In 2009, Haryana recorded nearly 72.29 percent voting.

The BJP was confident of victory.

"The BJP is all set to form the next government in Haryana on its own.

We will get a clear majority and end scams and corruption," party leader

Abhimanyu said.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was not willing to give up easily, saying the "response of the voters" showed the Congress will form the government for a third term.

INLD leader Abhay Chautala claimed the heavy turnout was an indication that his party would form the next government.

Minor clashes at about 10 places marred the otherwise peaceful polling.

India close to having its own navigation satellite system Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh) (IANS): India Thursday moved tantalisingly close to having its own satellite navigation system as it smoothly launched a satellite with its rocket - and is now only a step away from joining a select group of space-faring nations that have such a system.

With the successful launch early Thursday of the third of seven satellites planned under the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), India is just a satellite and a couple of months away from having its own satellite navigation system.

This puts India at the door step of an exclusive space club that has the US, Russia, China and Japan as members.

The navigational system, developed indigenously by India, is designed to provide accurate position information service to users within the country and up to 1,500 km from the nation's boundary line.

Though IRNSS is a sevensatellite system, it could be made operational with four satellites, ISRO officials said.

The fourth navigation satellite is expected to be launched this December.

The entire IRNSS constellation of seven satellites is planned to be completed by 2015.

tists and described the launch earlier in the night as "a matter of immense pride and joy".

Exactly at 1.32 a.m., the rocket - Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C26 (PSLVC26) - standing around 44.4 metres tall and weighing around 320 tonnes, blasted off from the first launch pad here at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, around 80 km from Chennai.

The expendable rocket with fierce orange flames at its tail lit up the night sky here. The rocket tore into the night skies with its luggage, the 1,425-kg IRNSS1C (Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System-1C) satellite.

For the onlookers, the rocket looked like an inverted flare with a long handle as it ascended towards the heavens amidst the cheers of the ISRO scientists and the media team assembled at the rocket port here.

Space scientists at ISRO rocket mission control room were glued to their computer screens watching the rocket escaping the earth's gravitational pull.

At around 20 minutes into the flight, the PSLV-C26 spat out IRNSS-1C at an altitude of around 500 km above the earth.

Immediately on the successful ejection, scientists at the mission control centre were visibly relieved and started applauding happily.

"India's third navigation satellite is up in the orbit,"

ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan said post launch.

Soon after the ejection into the orbit, the satellite's solar panels were deployed. In the coming days, four orbit manoeuvres by firing its on-board motors will be conducted

by ISRO to position the satellite in the Geostationary Orbit.

The satellite has two kinds of payloads - navigation and ranging. The navigation payload would transmit navigation service signals to the users.

A highly accurate rubidium atomic clock is part of the navigation payload.

The ranging payload consists of C-band transponder which facilitates accurate determination of he range of the satellite.

The satellite with a life span of around 10 years is the third of the seven satellites which will constitute the IRNSS. The first satellite IRNSS1A was launched in July 2013 and the second IRNSS-1B in April 2014.

Both have already started functioning from their designated orbital slots.

The system, expected to provide a position accuracy of better than 20 metres in the primary service area, is similar to the global positioning system of the US, Glonass of Russia, Galileo of Europe, China's Beidou or the Japanese Quasi Zenith Satellite System.

marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management, integration with mobile phones, mapping and geodetic data capture, visual and voice navigation for drivers and others.

While the ISRO is silent on the navigation system's strategic application, it is clear that the IRNSS will be used for defence purposes as well.

By adding more satellites, the service area can be expanded, an ISRO official said.

Radhakrishnan had earlier said though IRNSS is a seven-satellite system, it could be made operational

with four satellites.

He had said each satellite will cost around Rs.150 crore and there will be a total of nine - seven in the space and two as stand-by on ground.

The PSLV XL version used to put the satellites in orbit costs around Rs.130 crore. The seven rockets would involve an outlay of around Rs.910 crore.

In addition, there will be investments made in setting up a chain of ground stations which will be around Rs.1,000 crore, Radhakrishnan had said.

The IRNSS system comprises of two segments the space and the ground.

Rahul visit 'unites' Punjab Congress leaders Chandigarh (IANS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's visit to Chandigarh Thursday briefly "united" warring leaders of the party's Punjab unit who were clearly told that if they did not work together, they will continue to sit in the opposition.

At the meeting here, Gandhi gave a call to Congress leaders to launch the "Save Punjab" campaign across the state from Nov 14 to save it from the menace of drugs.

The Congress meeting passed a resolution to move the Supreme

Court to seek a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into smuggling of drugs in Punjab.

While Gandhi's visit was officially termed as one to "rejuvenate" the Congress leadership, it turned out to be a photo-op for top leaders of the state Congress to be seen together for the first time in months.

Incidentally, the slogan for the meeting of the Punjab Congress leadership was "Together, We can make a difference".

While the visit was organised by Punjab Congress president Pratap

Singh Bajwa, former chief minister and deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh attended one of the meetings that Gandhi addressed. Former union minister Ambika Soni, leader of opposition in Punjab assembly Sunil Jakhar and other senior leaders also attended the meeting.

Bajwa is being targeted by Amarinder Singh and other senior leaders for having failed to provide effective leadership in nearly 18 months that he has been the state Congress president. Bajwa had

replaced Amarinder on the post but the Congress has not been able to make any major impact in the state.

Gandhi first gave a pep talk to block and district presidents of the party followed by meetings with members of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), MPs, legislators and heads of frontal organizations.

"We have to stay united to take on the Akali Dal. I am optimistic that if we stay united, no one can defeat the Congress in the 2017 assembly elections. If we don't do

that, we will have to sit in opposition," he told the leaders.

Gandhi told block and district presidents that the party should highlight the drugs menace in the state through a sustained campaign.

He pointed out that the Akali Dal leadership had ridiculed him when he had mentioned the drugs menace two years ago. "Now the Punjab government (led by the Akali Dal) has initiated a campaign against drugs," he pointed out.

India holds high-level meeting on Ebola preparedness New Delhi (IANS): India Thursday held a high-level meeting on the country's preparedness to handle the "emerging" global crisis on Ebola.

The meeting, chaired by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth, was attended by chief secretaries and health secretaries of all states which have international airports and sea links.

The Ebola epidemic that broke out in west Africa last March has already caused 4,447 deaths and infected 8,914 people, especially in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

A US nurse has been infected with the deadly virus raising concerns over the disease's spread to western countries.

Seth took stock of the measures being undertaken for strengthening the preparedness, surveillance and response system in the respective states.

Secretaries of health, home, shipping, civil aviation and external affairs ministries were also present.

The protocol and preparedness measures, including infection control practices, to be followed by the states and union territories have already

been communicated to the states, an official release said here.

The state governments were informed during the meeting that these protocols have been put in place and all in-bound passengers are being screened.

The states have been informed that in accordance with the protocol, they have to identify hospitals and isolation wards for Ebola treatment.

Central teams have been asked to inspect the adequacy of preparations in these hospitals. According to senior officials, till Wednesday, 22,150 passengers have been screened for

Ebola of which seven have been identified to be at medium risk and 56 at high risk while the others were categorized as low risk.

Low risk passengers are given general advice on the virus while medium and high risk passengers are kept under observation for a further period of 30 days and their blood samples tested, they said.

A disease tracking system has also been put in place under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). No case of Ebola has so far been reported in the country although WHO has reported

about 9,000 cases and 4,493 deaths globally.

The chief secretaries were requested to ensure that proper liaison and coordination is maintained by the state health authorities with the airports and sea ports.

During the meeting, some state governments said they need more personal protective equipment (PPE) gear.

Meanwhile, the government is organizing a training programme from Oct 19-21 at Delhi. This training will include demonstrations and mock drills.

India to grow at 5.5 percent this year: RBI Governor

Hyderabad (IANS): India's economy is improving and the country is hoping to achieve 5.5 percent, or little more, growth rate this year, said Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan.

"Next year we will go into sixes and hopefully sevens the year after," he said while addressing students of Indian Business School (ISB) here Thursday.

Rajan said that without thinking of major reforms, the country can put the economy back on track to a reasonable level but reforms will be key to sus-

tain the growth or to take it to a higher level.

While claiming that the economy is improving, he hoped that there will be more sustainable growth going forward.

Rajan, however, underlined the need to support the growth in a strong way by working on the financial side.

"The bottom line is we do seem to be picking up in growth. Our current account deficit is smaller and inflation numbers look lot healthier than they looked a few months ago," he said.

The central bank chief said

there was some pickup of industrial growth but pointed out that Nokia shutting down its plant in Chennai made big difference to IRP numbers.

Rajan said while exports seem to have slowed down, the country is doing reasonably well in non-oil and non-gold exports with 6-7 percent growth. "This has been one of the strengths of the economy over last few months."

Noting the government is focusing on improving the framework of doing business, Rajan stressed the need to make easy for business to grow

in terms of access to finance, regulations, and skilled labour.

"The government is working in all these areas. I don't see why we can't overtime reach double digit given our level of development," he added.

To a question, Rajan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has an ambitious agenda for India. "The level of expectations is very high. We have to match it," he averred.

Stating that the government and RBI enjoy free frank and cordial relationship, Rajan said discussions are creating institutional structures like financial

resolution authority to improve functioning of financial sector.

"We need financial resolution authority so that we can close down financial institutions poorly functioning one and resurrecting well functioning ones," he said The RBI governor said discussions were also on the monetary policy framework. Terming it as a far sighted move by the government, he said this will help reach the standards which other countries have achieved and also decide how to make objective of central bank more explicit.

Odisha seeks Rs.500 crore for relief work Bhubaneswar (IANS): Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sanction interim assistance of Rs.500 crore for relief and restoration work following the damage caused in the state by cyclone Hudhud.

The cyclonic storm that hit the state Oct 12 has caused massive damage to public property and other infrastructure in southern and coastal Odisha.

"I would request you (Modi) to release an interim assistance of Rs.500 crore out of NDRF (National Disaster Response Fund) for the state to meet the requirements of relief and restoration of damaged public infrastructure," Patnaik said in a letter to Modi.

"A detailed report in the form of memorandum will be presented soon after the assessment is completed," he said.

Patnaik said the cyclone has severely affected the southern and coastal districts of Odisha. "However, my government ensured adequate preparedness in due time as a result the human casualty was restricted to three of which two were due to a boat accident."

He said over 2.47 lakh people were evacuated to safe shelters before the cyclone could hit the state.

Patnaik said though the toll was restricted due to early preparedness, there is extensive damage to houses, crops and public infrastructure.

He said the State Disaster Response Fund corpus for fiscal 2014-15 is almost empty as Rs.107 crore allotted in advance was spent on cyclone Phailin related expenditure last year.

"Besides, a major portion of the fund has been spent in providing agriculture input subsidy to farmers who sustained losses due to the cyclone and on relief and restoration measures on account of floods that Odisha faced during June-August period this year," he said.

Cyclone Phailin had caused havoc in the state in October 2013.

University teachers seek anti-racism law New Delhi (IANS): An umbrella body of teachers of different universities in the national capital Thursday sought an appropriate anti-racism law to check increasing violence against students of the northeast.

Coordination Committee of Associations of Teachers in Delhi (CCATD) said "racist violence" is bound to be detrimental to the interest of the nation and its democratic and multicultural fabric.

The demand came after two youths from Nagaland were assaulted by a gang of seven in the Sikanderpur area of Gurgaon Thursday.

Similarly, a student from Manipur was beaten up by a group of people in Bangalore Wednesday for not speaking in Kannada.

CCATD comprises of teachers from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Ambedkar University, Indraprastha University, Hamdard University and Indira Gandhi National Open University.

"The idea of India is based on the motto 'Unity in Diversity'. There is an urgent need to sensitise police and the civil administration so that they react quickly and without any bias. There is a need to raise the consciousness of all people to greater tolerance towards each other," CCATD said in a statement.

US university creates business school after Mumbai-born alumnus

Washington (IANS): Rockford University in Illinois has announced the creation of the Puri Business School (PBS) in recognition of a $5 million contribution to the University by a Mumbai-born Indian-American alumnus.

Sunil Puri, Rockford Group founder and president, immigrated to the US in 1979 to attend what was then called Rockford College, where he graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

The first named school at the

University, PBS commemorates Puri's lifetime commitment to Rockford University, the announcement said.

Housed under the University's College of Social Sciences, Commerce and Education, it will include the Economics, Business and Accounting (EBA) programmes, along with ancillary business related activities of the University.

Puri, who is a Rockford University trustee, has also donated a 28,000 square foot building which will serve

as the hub for all related PBS programming at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

His company owns and manages about 4 million square feet of retail, office and industrial space in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

Puri takes pride in the fact that he can give back to the school to which he attributes much of his success, the announcement said.

"Sunil's is a shared vision with the University to establish a school of business that will not only be envied

but provide our students with a superior educational experience that prepares them for success," University President Robert L. Head said.

Puri sees PBS not just graduating accountants and business managers; he sees it producing entrepreneurs and business leaders that assist in the economic revival of his region, the announcement said.

"It is important to my family and me," Puri said that significant programmatic and curricular advances at PBS "will deepen the University's

commitment to advance the university and partner in the economic revival of this region."

"The liberal arts education I received at Rockford College significantly contributed to my success and the Puri Business School is my way of paying it forward."

About 250 people, including educators and US Senator Dick Durbin joined the grand opening of Puri Business School at Rockford University on Oct 3.

Kerala diaspora directory to go online Nov 1 Thiruvananthapuram (IANS): A diaspora directory for all the non-resident Keralites will go online Nov 1, which is celebrated as the Kerala Day, an official said Friday.

The software for making the directory was developed in-house, P. Sudeep, CEO of RootsNorka, the Kerala government agency that

looks after the welfare of the state's diaspora, told IANS. Kerala came into being place Nov 1, 1956.

The directory will help all the non-resident Keralites make online registrations, Sudeep said he said.

"Last minute checks are going on and we

wish to begin the online registration Nov 1. We are now awaiting the clearance from the state government," said Sudeep.

The Kerala diaspora directory has been a long standing demand by the academic community as there is no authentic record to know the exact number of the non-resident Keralites.

Over the years, the only one source that has been quoted is a series of studies done by the migration unit of the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) here.

The most recent study by K.C. Zachariah and S. Irudayarajan came last month which said that the number of emigrants in 2014 from the state is 23.63 lakh so far. The figure was 22.81 lakh in 2011, 21.93 lakh in 2008, 18.38 lakh in 2003 and 13.62 lakh in 1998.

It also points out that 90 percent of the state diaspora is in various Middle-East countries.

"The online registration is a simple process and any Keralite who lives outside can log-in to our site and register themselves. This will be useful for the state government as none has any idea about the exact number of Keralites abroad," said Sudeep.

"After getting clearance from the state government, we will get in touch with all the Kerala based organisations in other countries to provide help to those who do not have direct access to computers," Sudeep said.

Roots-Norka is planning to give the duration of about three months to the Keralites aborad to register themselves.

US Telugus contribute $100,000 for cyclone Hudhud relief

Washington (IANS): Telugu Association of North America (TANA), the largest Telugu organization outside India, has announced that it will be making an initial contribution of $100,000 for relief efforts for the victims of cyclone Hudhud.

Expressing shock at the unprecedented disaster caused by cyclone Hudhud in the northern districts of Andhra Pradesh, TANA President Mohan Nannapaneni said TANA intends to help with both immediate relief and long term rebuilding measures.

As Andhra Pradesh state has just started building the infrastructure for a capital and other administrative needs, he said that this catastrophe has dealt a severe blow to all these developmental activities.

Nannapaneni and Satish Vemana, Secretary of TANA, are going to meet Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu to hand over the cheque, according to a media release.

TANA leadership requested all NRI's particularly Telugu people living in North America to respond and contribute generously for this cause.

TANA and TANA Foundation will be matching the contributions from individual donations, the release said.

N-deal could help end regional chaos: Iran speaker

Geneva (IANS/EFE): Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said Wednesday that reaching an agreement on his country's controversial nuclear programme would help put an end to the "chaos in the region".

"There is no direct or natural relation between the nuclear negotiations and the situation in the region, but they may be related because the conclusion of negotiations can establish mutual trust," Larijani said.

Larijani, who was in Geneva to attend a meeting of the InterParliamentary Union (IPU), added that a deal could be helpful as nobody can deny that such an agreement would help to counter the instability in the region.

A new round of negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 Group -the US, Britain, China, Russia, France plus Germany -- will be held in Vienna

in order to reach an agreement on Iran's nuclear capabilities before the Nov 24 deadline.

Larijani noted that time was not in their favour, referring to the general instability of the Middle East due to the rapid advance of Islamic State (IS) terrorist group which now controls vast areas of Syria and Iraq.

Regarding the ineffectiveness of the air raids launched by the US-led international coalition against the IS, he said that it was "as predicted".

"You cannot attack guerilla fighters with bombs," he said.

Larijani said that he has been following the nuclear negotiations very closely. He reaffirmed that Iran was not seeking to develop nuclear weapons capability, and insisted that his country was "transparent" about its nuclear programme.

US military advisors arrive in Iraq to train security forces

Baghdad (IANS) Dozens of US military advisors arrived in Iraq Wednesday to train the country's security forces as they continue to face obstacles in their fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, officials said.

In western Iraq, up to 100 US advisors arrived at two air bases in the volatile province of Anbar and are expected to start training of the Iraqi troops to battle IS militants, who have seized large parts of the province, Sabah Karhout, head of the provincial council, told reporters.

"Habaniyah air base in east of the provincial capital city of Ramadi and Asad air base near the town of Baghdadi, received 100 US military advisors," Xinhua quoted Karhout as saying.

"The US advisors will train and advise the Iraqi troops, including police and government-backed tribal fighters, in their fight against the Islamic State in the militant-seized cities and towns in the Anbar province," he added.

Since December last year, insurgent attacks have continued in the Sunni Arab heartland from the west of Baghdad to the Anbar province, which has witnessed fierce clashes that flared up after Iraqi police dismantled a Sunni anti-government protest site outside the city of Ramadi.

Meanwhile, the IS is reportedly advancing on Iraq's capital, Baghdad, as media reported that hit-and-run clashes have been going on for more than a week between the IS militants and Iraqi security forces battling for control of the Abu Ghraib area and Baghdad international airport.

In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, another group of US military advisors arrived in the Karkosh military base in the early morning hours, a source from Dijlah Operations Command, told Xinhua on the condition of anonymity.

"This is the first group of American advisors that reached Diyala province after the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq late in 2011. Their mission is supervising and providing advice in training the Iraqi security forces, to improve their fighting skills in confronting the terrorist gangs," the source, whose command is responsible for security in the provinces of Diyala, Kirkuk and Salahudin, said without detailing the number of the advisors.

FIFA not worried by pace of India's football infrastructure development

New Delhi (IANS): FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke Wednesday said the world football's parent body is not unduly concerned by the pace of sports infrastructure development in India having awarded the cricket-dominated country hosting rights for the Under-17 World Cup. "No major concern for FIFA regarding India's development for the staging of the Under-17 World Cup. I spoke with the Indian sports minister about the general football infrastructure in the country. We have devised a plan and will stick to it.

"We still have three years to successfully host the World Cup. So there is time," Valcke said revealing that FIFA has helped the All Indian Football Federation (AIFF) develop a strategic

plan till 2017 for hosting the Under-17 World Cup in India.

He noted that since his last visit to the country nearly two years ago, things have changed for the better.

"Lot of development has taken place in India since my last visit nearly two years ago. The strategic plan will be a guideline and show AIFF the right path in its goal of successfully staging the World Cup." He stressed that India's aim should be to develop its junior side that can perform positively in the World Cup, adding that FIFA views the youth tournament as a kick-off of new era of Indian football.

"As hosts, India's performance in the World Cup will be crucial. It is imperative that AIFF develops its youth team. The goal of the

staging the World Cup in India is not to make money, but to develop football in the country. The process has started."

AIFF president Praful Patel spoke of India's plans to bid for the hosting rights of Club World Cup in 201718.

"We are working on preparing a bid for the hosting of Club World Cup in 2017-18 and will eventually bid for the Under-20 World Cup," Patel said at a press conference here.

Valcke, however, outlined that India's immediate aim should be regarding the successful hosting of the Under-17 World Cup. "If India succeeds in successful staging of the World Cup, then only they should bid for the Under-20 World Cup," he said.

"AIFF will have to follow a stringent bidding process

for the Club World Cup. FIFA's executive committee will decide the hosts for Club World Cup in December 2014."

He also pointed out that FIFA is not looking at helping AIFF developing moderate capacity stadia for the World Cup, stressing on the point that playing in front of empty stadia won't help India's cause of progress in the sport.

"We (FIFA) do not support the idea of building big stadiums. We are focusing on helping AIFF develop 25,000-capacity stadiums for the Under-17 World Cup," the Frenchman said.

Patel said the initial crowd response for the ISL matches have been good, observing that 25,00030,000 capacity stadium are ideal for all football events in the country.

India will compete with Asia's elite soon: John Abraham

Shillong (IANS): India will be able to compete against Asia's football elite in the next five to six years, John Abraham, Bollywood actor and co-owner of ISL fran-

"Currently, India is ranked 158 in the FIFA world rankings, and it will be some time before we see this

ranking make an upward move. The success of the Indian Super League (ISL) is important for the growth of football in the country," John told journalists in the state capital of Meghalaya here.

"We are hopeful that India will give a good fight in football to Asian countries in the next five to six years."

"We need more time. We need to begin somewhere and the success of ISL is important for the growth of football in the country. If this (ISL) does not work, then I don't know what will work," said the actor-producer.

New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday unveiled some key labour reforms that rely on trust and promote the ease of doing business, and said the measures will go a long way in changing India's work culture, promoting social security and skilling the youth.

The prime minister also unveiled the Shram Suvidha portal, a Labour Inspection Scheme, as also the portability of social security through a Universal Account Number for Employees Provident Fund at an event in Vigyan Bhavan conference complex here. He also launched Apprentice Protsahan Yojana of the labour ministry.

"How to change the work culture? These efforts are a great example," said Modi amid applause. "This is Minimum Government, Maximum Governance."

The prime minister added: "E-governance is easy governance. It builds trust for transparency."

On the issue of social security of labour force, the prime minister expressed concern that as much as Rs.27,000 crore was lying unclaimed with the Employees Provident Fund Organisation.

"This money belongs to poor workers of India," he said, adding the portability provided under the Employees Provident Fund through one universal account number will put an end to such large sums of money being locked up and not reaching the intended beneficiary.

The prime minister said the "Shramev Jayate" initiatives were essential elements of the "Make in India" vision, paving the way for skill development of youth in a big way, and creating opportunities for India to meet the global requirement of skilled labour.

Modi also unveiled a booklet on National Brand Ambassadors for Vocational Training and a souvenir for All India Skill Competition.

He said skilled labour has

not been given due dignity in the society and was generally regarded as lower to other forms of work.

"A compassionate approach would result in the Shram Yogi (labourer) becoming a Rashtra Yogi and hence, a Rashtra Nirmaata (nation-builder).

There is need to change outlook," he said.

Modi said the phrase "Shramev Jayate" had as much significance as "Satyamev Jayate" in the tasks related to the country's development.

He said Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) were the primary units for industrial training but have not been given due importance.

The government has taken a new initiative to appoint ambassadors and they would prove role models for students from ITIs as they had achieved success in their lives after studying in these institutes, he added.

Modi said sometimes people who are not good at academics have potential in areas such as industry.

Referring to his government's moves towards selfcertification of documents, he said there was need to have faith on people.

scheme of the labour ministry, he said it will help meet needs of skilled workforce.

Labour ministry officials said the Apprentices Act, 1961, had been enacted to regulate apprenticeship training in the industry.

They said a major initiative has been taken to revamp the existing apprenticeship scheme with the aim of increasing apprenticeship seats to more than 20 lakh in the next few years.

The officials said there were only 2.82 lakh apprentices against 4.9 lakh seats available at present.

India have a good chance of defending World Cup: Sourav Ganguly

New Delhi (IANS): Former captain Sourav Ganguly believes that the Indian cricket team has a good chance of defending the World Cup title in 2015 to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

"India have got a good chance of defending the World Cup. They are a very good One-Day International (ODI) side wherever they play.

Whether it is Australia or England, they are a top one-day side," Ganguly told IANS in an interview.

"Test matches overseas are an issue, but I am not really too worried about ODI performances and I think they will do well in Australia and New Zealand."

The reigning World Champions should have an upper hand in the World Cup to be held in FebruaryMarch 2015 as they will be touring Australia for more than two months, from late

November to end of January, to play four Tests against the home side.

The Tests will be followed by an ODI tri-series also involving England.

The long tour may get the Indian team accustomed to the conditions 'Down Under', but will it not tire them out just ahead of the one-and-ahalf-month-long World Cup? "The players will get accustomed, but I don't think they will get tired.

They should not be thinking about this at all whether they are getting tired or not. The team will get a two-week break after the tri-series. They will come back to India and then go for the World Cup. A two-week break is enough these days," said the 42-year-old.

The last time India toured Australia, from December 2011 to January 2012, they were thrashed 0-4 by the home team in

the four match Test series.

This time too India will be playing four Tests and India's overseas record under Mahendra Singh Dhoni isn't anything to boast about.

"It is going to be a tough tour. India will really have to play well to compete with Australia and I hope they do because for me the strength and weakness of Indian cricket is how they play overseas," said the left-hander who led India to the final of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

Though, current skipper Dhoni has brought several laurels for the country in limited overs cricket, including the 2011 World Cup at home, as mentioned above, his record in overseas Tests is pretty dismal. Is there any chance of split captaincy?

Punjab BJP objects to Navjot Sidhu's security being withdrawn Chandigarh (IANS): The BJP Tuesday objected the Punjab government's withdrawal of security cover from three-time Amritsar MP, cricketerturned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu.

In a statement here, Bharatiya Janata Party's Punjab unit president Kamal Sharma termed the development as "extremely unfortunate".

Categorically stating that the "Punjab BJP did not endorse the decision taken by the government", Sharma said:

"There are so many political leaders and other personalities who have been given so much security, notwithstanding any such threat perception."

"Sidhu is not only a former parliamentarian but an iconic personality and genuinely requires security cover. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal should immediately intervene and issue orders for the reinstatement of the security to Sidhu," he demanded.

The security withdrawal came just days after

Sidhu aggressively campaigned for the BJP in neighbouring Haryana for the assembly elections, and openly criticised the Akali Dal for joining hands with the Indian National Lok Dal in Haryana.

The BJP runs an alliance government with the Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab. The alliance has been in power in the state since 2007.

However, for the Haryana elections, the Akali Dal chose the INLD over the BJP.

Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal and his brother-in-law and Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia had been at political loggerheads with Sidhu when he was the Amritsar MP (2004-2014).

Clark praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for empowering states to have direct trade ties with various countries. “Modi is removing red tape to quicken the process of investment. This will bring more business and jobs,” she said, according to the Tribune.

She also encouraged collaboration between educational institutions in the two countries. “One school each in India and Japan are the two latest international schools approved to offer the BC curriculum,” she said.

Lisa Ray plans cancer research institute in India

EVER since Canada-born Indian actress Lisa Ray battled Multiple Myeloma, a form of cancer, she has campaigned for the cause and spoken widely of it to spread awareness. Now, she's planning to open her own research institute for cancer in India.

The "Water" actress, who has returned to the country, says she plans to join hands with Shiladitya Sengupta, who has worked in the area of cancer research and who won the DoD Breast Cancer Research Program Collaborative Innovators Award in 2009.

Together, they want to open an institute on the lines of Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

"Shiladitya and I share a common dream - a cancer institute similar to Dana-Farber here in

India," Lisa said in a statement.

"I'm looking forward to collaborating with Shiladitya on the crucial issue of establishing resources for ongoing research into cancer treatments here in India. We have the ability to provide affordable solutions for diagnosis and treatment as well as patient support specifically designed for India," she added.

Lisa stands as an inspiration to several cancer patients as instead of wallowing in self-pity, she put herself out there and began campaigning for the cause.

Even as there's news that she is ready to make a comeback to films, Lisa is sure that she will continue doing her bit for spreading cancer awareness.

"My goal is to continue to spread awareness through the media, talks, and collaborations with medical professionals in India. Since preventative courses of action are as important, I will be writing extensively on a new blog and organising as many outreach programmes as possible in India.

"Eventually, I'd like to transform the experience creatively for the big screen and bring my experiences to that canvas to provoke even more conversation around cancer," said the 42year-old, who also featured in films like "Kasoor", "Bollywood/Hollywood" and "Cooking

Red Chillies to make four-five films without me: Shah Rukh Khan

SHAH Rukh Khan's production banner Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd., which is reportedly targeting a 25 percent annual business growth, is set to roll out four to five films and the Bollywood superstar says he won't act in them.

"We want to make four-five films without me. As a producer I would like to concentrate on the films and visual effects," Shah Rukh told IANS in an interview.

Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd. turned 12 this year. Shah Rukh said the company would also make a couple of films with him in the lead.

"We will make a couple with me and some with other actors. The office is working towards that. The office is concentrating on filmmaking because that is our forte," he said.

In 12 years, Red Chillies has made 12 films, including forthcoming heist drama "Happy New Year" (HNY) as well as last year's blockbuster "Chennai Express". The company broke even in 2012.

"Karuna has produced HNY, but this is not the kind of films she wants to make, she wants to make different ones. Kareem wants to make different ones. Manish wants to make different ones. We've enough in-house producers who would like to make films and I may not be able to participate in them."

He also feels that as producers they have grown over the years in terms of technology, presentation, and marketing of the films. HNY will reflect that as it has some "amazing stuff", he adds.

"Whether it is visual effect or technology that we have used in the sequences and fights, I think it has not been used before," said Shah Rukh.

"What we learn in the last film, we try to make it perfect in the next film. So what we learned in 'Ra.One' and 'Chennai Express', we have tried to make it perfect in 'HNY' and it will show results in one of the shots and it

is as good as any international film can show you. That's for me as a producer a biggest high, not the film, money or business.

"For me it is, 'Can I create something that Indian cinema is wanting to see... in terms of technology?"

He believes a film's fate cannot be controlled, "but technology is what we can control as producers."

"I feel that the quality part of filmmaking, which we can control, should be of the highest order. We at Red Chillies are very clear about one thing: whatever aspect of technology we are offered, we are going to use it to the best advantage," said SRK whose redchillies.vfx has done over 25 projects so far.

According to reports, film production and VFX are the two most important businesses of Red Chillies, together constituting almost 70 percent of its revenues.

The actor believes in recognising new talents and giving them wings. "I have always believed if you can't recognise talent, you are not talented yourself. So I feel I have the capacity to be able to recognise new things and take a chance," he said.

Shah Rukh said he may be the face of his company but "it's a team".

"What makes me proud is when the Red Chilles team does something and somebody else follows it. I m like wow, we created something new to be followed. And that's gives me high.

"It's Red Chillies philosophy: please do new things."

Road Test: 2014 Volkswagen Passat CC 2’0T: Sleek sedan has coupe-like looks

Volkswagen is well known for its range of very individual

looking cars. From the curvy VW Beetle to the boxy upright- looking Golf and the chunky sensible shoes- look-

ing Jetta and Passat’s. So the sweeping, coupe –like sleek profile of the Volkswagen CC sedan came

as bit of shock when it was introduced a few years ago.

The low, audacious roofline, reptilian, wide eyed grille with bi-xenon high-intensity gas-discharge headlights, low slim windows and stretched out athletic stance looks almost Audi-like. The result is a trim, seamless, neat- looking four- door sedan with European taste and sensibilities.

This four door sedan has a few changes coming off from 2012 redesign namely Park distance control replacing a rearview camera in the Technology Package’ but otherwise continues on with its 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder engine, mated to a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) in Sportline or Highline trim.

Engine wise, the four cylinder generates 200 horsepower at 5,100 to 6,000 rpm and 207 foot-pounds of torque at 1,500 to 5,000 rpm, driving the front wheels. A 3.6-litre V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive is also available in the Highline trim level.

The interior of the CC is typically Volkswagen; smart, grown up, slightly conservative, but oh so tasteful with comfortable leather seats, fine detailing and stellar quality to the fit and finish.

Soft-touch materials abound and the overall interior design is very polished. Our

two- tone cream and dark trimmed interior looked fantastic!

Front cabin room is good, however the CC’s lowsweeping like a coupe profile does compromise headroom for taller rear passengers.

Visibility out the rear can also be a little tricky because of the wider pillars. However thanks to the longer wheelbase, rear-seat passengers will find an abundance of

On the road, the 500L’s 1.4L “Multiair� turbo engines 160 horsepower and 184 lb/ft of torque drives well enough. The 6speed dual-clutch automatic is a smooth transmission although a tad slower to switch gears. However acceleration is brisk and the 500L does not feel underpowered despite is bigger platform and weight.

The 500L is also; being of European heritage and where fuel is very expensive is quite fuel-efficient – rated at 8.7 litres/100 km in the city and 6.0 on the highway.

Date: Oct. 3, 2014 File#: #603-1221 Homer St. Vancouver BC Details: On Oct. 3, 2014, at approx. 12:30 am, two men forced their way into #603-1221 Homer St. The two residents were tied up while the suspects searched the apartment. One of the victims managed to free himself and struggled with a suspect. During the struggle, the victim was stabbed multiple times and the suspect may have received a laceration to the back of his head. As the suspects fled they sprayed pepper spray throughout the apartment.

The suspects are described as: 1)White male, late 20's early 30's, 5'8"-6', dark jeans, black hoody w/ white design on upper back, orange bandana, man purse, bow legged.

2) Black male, late 20's early 30's, 6' plus, light color pants, black hoody w/skeleton design.
