New Delhi (IANS): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Wednesday said the identities of 427 overseas account holders have been established and 250 of them had conceded to holding these accounts. He refuted opposition charges that the government was doing little to get back the illicit money stashed away by Indians abroad.

Replying to the debate on black money in the Rajya Sabha, Jaitley said the government wanted to follow the correct procedure in disclosing names.

"The issue is not to disclose or not, but how and when to disclose the names," he said.

He said this was because since the evidence of black money stashed away by Indians was outside the Indian shores, the government must get evidence first from other countries, using the various treaties that New Delhi entered into with them.

"The names will become public," Jaitley assured, when some opposition members demanded that the government reveal the identities of the perpetrators right away, since they were already being talked about in the media.

India has no official estimates of illegal money stashed away overseas, but the unofficial ones range from $466 billion to $1.4 trillion.

India says Mumbai attack trial in Pakistan going slow Kathmandu/New Delhi (IANS): India Wednesday said the trial of those responsible for the 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai was progressing "very slowly" in Pakistan, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the 2008 horror at the Saarc summit.

Modi, who was in Kathmandu for the Saarc summit, stressed the need to combat "terrorism and trans-national crimes".

"Today, as we remember the horror of the terror attack in Mumbai in 2008, we feel the endless pain of lost lives," the prime minister said at the opening of the two-day summit. "Let us work together to fulfil the pledge we have taken to combat terrorism and trans-national crimes," he added.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, meanwhile, said the trial of those responsible for the attack was progressing "very slowly" in Pakistan and should be expedited on a priority basis.

"Heartfelt tributes to people who lost their lives in Mumbai terror attack of 2008.

The perpetrators of Mumbai attack are yet to be punished," Rajnath Singh said in a tweet.

Modi, Sharif bonhomie gives fresh boost to Saarc Kathmandu, Nov 27 (IANS) In a final ice-breaking moment that gave a huge boost to Saarc and floundering regional cooperation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shook hands with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, laughed and even patted him on the arm at the closing ceremony of the bloc's 18th summit here Thursday, to resounding applause from a relieved audience comprising leaders, diplomats and officials from the eight South Asian countries.

In a photo-op that appeared to belie the recent animosity between the two neighbours, Modi and Sharif kept their handshake for several seconds and chatted, smiling all the while, as Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, the host of the summit, looked on happily.

Modi and Sharif had shaken hands and interacted briefly during the retreat at Dhulikhel outside Kathmandu earlier in the day.

The two had otherwise studiously ignored each other during the summit Wednesday, the sixth anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that India has blamed on Pakistani elements.

"India is for peaceful and cooperative relations with Pakistan. If this shake hand leads to that we will welcome it. However, emphasis is on

meaningful dialogue," external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said later to reporters.

To a question, he said he was unaware of what Modi and Sharif spoke about during the Dhulikhel retreat as "there was no one else.

Nobody else knows what they talked of. They spoke of Saarc matters, but what specifically they discussed, no one is privy".

During the concluding ceremony, as soon as Koirala declared the session closed, Modi turned to the immediate neighbour to his right, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and shook hands and chatted.

He then shook hands with Maldives President Abdulla Yameen, and with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, and was joined by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sharif was away from the group, talking to a Nepali minister, while Koirala was looking awkwardly on, standing in the midst of the two rival prime ministers.

Just when the question was on everyone's mind - will they, won't they - Modi finished chatting with his group of Saarc leaders, turned around and spoke to the Nepali prime minister, and stepped ahead to shake hands with Sharif.

Modi and Sharif smiled warmly at each other, and kept their hands clasped all the while as they chatted like old friends.

As the audience erupted into loud applause, Modi cracked what appeared like a joke, laughed and slapped Sharif gently on his arm - as the two kept their handshake on.

Both the leaders then turned towards the audience, comprising diplomats and senior officials of all the eight countries, as they continued to shake hands.

A relieved Koirala, who is credited with mediating between them, looked smilingly on.

The Himalayan Times was prompt in putting up the news on its website.

Titled "Smiling Modi, Sharif shake hands at Summit closure", it wrote: "At the closing ceremony of the 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif shook hands with smiling faces."

"The heads of governments of two historic rivals posed for photographs during the handshake for nearly a minute. The duo were seen talking to each other," it said.

Earlier in the day, away from the glare of cameras, Modi and Sharif

held informal talks at the Dhulikhel retreat, those present said.

The effect of the informal talks was immediately reflected in the proposed agreements.

The heads of state and government agreed to sign the Saarc Framework Agreement on Energy Cooperation on electricity trade, and decided to sign two other pacts -motor vehicle and railway agreements -- within three months, a big face-saver for Summit host Nepal in particular and the region as a whole.

Dinesh Bhattarai, foreign relations advisor to Koriala, who was present in the retreat, confirmed to IANS that both the leaders held informal talks after meeting each other along with other heads of state and government.

Prime Minster Koirala pushed the two leaders to sit for talks, at least informally now, and break the logjam in the bilateral relations as other Saarc countries feel that the IndiaPakistan dispute was impeding progress on greater South Asian cooperation and understanding.

During his talks with Modi, Koirala asked the Indian prime minister to reach out to Pakistan, given the former's stature as Saarc leader, and its size, population and economy.

"While watching the Himalayas and taking herbal and organic food,

Modi and Sharif were seen more open and close," a diplomat said.

"The focus was on how to carry on the Saarc process and how to strengthening the bilateral ties."

The Saarc leaders, including Modi, Sharif and Koriala, cracked jokes, planted trees and shared their personal matters with each other.

After the retreat, the leaders agreed to sign the Saarc Framework Agreement on Energy Cooperation which was announced in the Kathmandu Declaration in the evening.

Because of the deadlock between India and Pakistan, the three proposed agreements related to motor vehicle, railway and energy, all pushed by New Delhi, were uncertain until Thursday.

After the retreat and unofficial talks among the leaders, the Saarc leaders agreed to sign the energy deal and agreed to complete the other two agreements within three months, Bhattarai said.

The 33 food items served to the leaders were totally vegetarian, perhaps in deference to the diet preferences of the Indian prime minister who is a strict vegetarian. Gujarati basundi with jalebi was served to Modi as dessert.

Steep rise in rape cases, assaults on women in Delhi New Delhi (IANS): Incidents of rape in the capital more than doubled between 2012 and 2013 while cases of assault on women increased by five times, the government said Wednesday.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju told the Rajya Sabha that there has been an increase in crimes against women both in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi

and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Citing information provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Rijiju said rape cases in Delhi rose from 706 in 2012 to 1,636 in 2013.

"Cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty have spiked five times, from 727 to 3,515 and total registered crimes against women have more

than doubled from 5,920 to 12,853 cases during the same period," he said.

"In Delhi and NCR, the total registered crimes against women rose from 11,419 in 2011 to 12,288 (in 2012) and the figure last year (2013) was 21,887," he said.

He said there were "various reasons (societal, economic etc.) for rise in crimes against women and children".

The minister said the spurt in cases in 2013 can be attributed to enactment of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 under which non-registration of cases by police has been designated as a criminal offence.

Supreme Court sets up panel to verify figures on child sex ratio New Delhi (IANS): Expressing its misgivings about the authenticity of the figures of the child sex ratio given to it by various state governments, the Supreme Court Tuesday set up a committee to verify the record on the basis of which these figures were arrived at.

The apex court bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit said they had "grave doubts" over the correctness of the figures while setting up the panel which will also have two senior lawyers - Colin Gonsalves and Sanjay Parekh - on it.

Setting up the panel whose meeting will be held under the National Inspection and Monitoring Committee, the court said:

"The purpose is to find out whether there is degradation of the sex ratio or a stagnation or any steps have really been taken by the concerned states to improve/enhance the sex ratio or not?"

The court order came in the course of the hearing of a petition by NGO Voluntary Health Association of Punjab seeking to curb sex determination clinics all over the country and the prosecution of those carrying it out illegally. The petitioner has sought the court's intervention to check and reverse the alarming gulf in the male and girl child ratio.

"In our considered opinion, there should be a verification of the documents that form the basis on

which these figures have been arrived at. Let it be clarified that the figures that have been put forth do not show any indication of improvement but we would like to have it verified to satisfy ourselves whether the figure that has been put forth is correct or not," said Justice Misra expressing apprehensions over the statistics supplied by the various state governments.

The court directed that the meeting of the committee would be attended by an additional secretary, and two other joint secretaries of the health and family welfare ministry and the officers who had filed the affidavits on behalf of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. The meeting would

be held Dec 3 and a report submitted by Dec 10, as it directed the next hearing of the matter on Dec 11.

The states shall, the court said, produce the relevant registers/records before the committee.

"We are sure, the states should be in a position to produce the registers/record in the meeting so that it can be scrutinized. Any discrepancy in this respect shall not be appreciated for the states must have prepared the chart on the basis of the registers/records," the court said.

The court also sought suggestions from the state governments as to what steps could be taken to improve girl child sex ratio.

Fine people for littering to make Delhi clean: High Court New Delhi (IANS): Observing that municipal authorities have failed to maintain cleanliness in the capital, the Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the civic bodies to punish people for littering.

The court also ordered the civic bodies to supervise the work of sanitation workers employed in its various units to ensure cleanliness in the city.

A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul observed that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)

failed to ensure cleanliness in various parts of the city.

The court's direction came on a petition by NGO Nyaya Bhoomi.

When the MCD told the court that over 6,000 defaulters have been fined for littering, the court said it was too less and the city was turning dirtier day by day.

The court asked the civic agencies to maintain cleanliness in the city, and to take steps for penalising people for littering.

"Littering is an offence," the court said, directing municipal authorities to fol-

low the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India campaign) in Delhi also.

The court asked municipal authorities to inform it about the number of sanitation workers and the locations they were posted for work.

The MCD said 62,777 sanitation workers were carrying out work like sweeping of roads, cleaning of public toilets and other work under sanitary superintendents.

The court said neither the sanitation workers nor their superior officials were doing their job responsibly and directed zonal directors to

remain present on the next date of hearing Dec 18.

The NGO had filed a petition alleging that municipal authorities have failed to improve the conditions in the capital.

B.B. Sharan, an 86-year-old person representing the NGO, spoke about the poor state of public toilets, infrastructure and facilities in health and educational institutions.

Any sweeper not found present on duty can jailed for up to 30 days by municipal magistrates under the MCD Act, he requested.

Indian American scientist develops path to brighter LCD displays Washington (IANS): Researchers led by an IndianAmerican have developed a polarising filter that can result in mobile device displays that last much longer on a single battery charge and cameras that can shoot in dim light.

Led by Utah Univesity electrical and computer engineering associate professor Rajesh Menon, electrical researchers created the filter by etching a silicon wafer with nanoscale pillars and holes using a focused gallium-ion beam, a

university release said.

Polarisers are indispensable in digital photography and LCD displays, but they block enormous amounts of light, wasting energy and making it more difficult to photograph in low light.

"This new concept in light filtering can perform the same function as a standard polariser but allows up to nearly 30 percent more light to pass through," said Menon.

Polarisers are widely used by photographers to reduce glare

in the image. They also are used in LCD displays to regulate what light passes through to create images on the screen.

"When you take a picture and put the polarised filter on, you are trying to get rid of glare," Menon said. "But most polarisers will eliminate anywhere from to 60 to 70 percent of the light. You can see it with your eyes."

Yet with Menon's new polariser, much of the light that normally is reflected back is instead converted to the

desired polarised state.

The Utah researchers have been able to pass through about 74 percent of the light, though their goal is to eventually allow all of the light to pass through.

LCD displays on devices such as smartphones and tablets have two polarisers that ultimately throw away most of the light when working with the liquid crystal display.

"If one can increase that energy efficiency, that is a huge increase on the battery life of

your display. Or you can make your display brighter," Menon said.

Menon said the first marketable applications of this technology could be available in five to 10 years.

The technology also could be a boon for photographers who want to bring out more detail in their pictures while shooting in low-light situations and for scientists using microscopes and telescopes to visualise obscure phenomenon, he said.

Indian-origin student took bear's photos before it killed him Washington (IANS): An Indian-origin student in the US took photos of a bear while hiking in a US preserve before it mauled him to death, media reported.

Darsh Patel, a Rutgers University student, and four others were being followed by the black bear in the West Milford Apshawa preserve, New Jersey. But moments after Patel used his mobile phone to capture images of the animal, it attacked and killed him, New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

The five friends had been hiking Sep 21 when they met at the preserve's entrance a man and a woman who advised them to turn around as a bear was on the loose, authorities said.

But the group went on, and Patel took photos from a distance of about 100 feet. Another hiker took one photo.

The group turned and began walking away, but the bear fol-

lowed, police said. When it got within about 15 feet, the five split up and took off running. Four of them escaped and made a 911 emergency call.

Two Indianorigin men jailed in Fiji for graft Suva (IANS): Two Indian-origin men, Mahendra Patel and Dhirendra Pratap, were sentenced to one year and six months in jail respectively over corruption charges by a court in Fiji Monday.

Patel was former chairman of the Post Fiji, the national postal service of Fiji, Fiji Live reported.

One more official of the Post Fiji, Peni Mau, has also been convicted and sentenced for corruption.

Patel, 71, now heads Motibhai and Company Limited, one of Fiji’s most well-established and diversified business houses.

Modi's Sydney show host denies claiming to be Miss India Australia New Delhi (IANS): In the light of a controversy over the alleged claim that she was Miss India Australia, the host of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Sydney show has clarified she never claimed to be the title-holder for grabbing the event's anchoring.

The Indian Australian Community Foundation (IACF) organised the community reception programme for Modi Nov 17 at Sydney's AllPhones Arena, where over 16,000 people congregated for his public address, held mainly for the Indian diaspora.

The event had Rashi Kapoor and Siddharth Trivedi as its masters of ceremony (MCs).

Stating that she was actually a

"Miss India Global 2013", Rashi Kapoor told IANS that the controversy was caused by incorrect reporting about her introduction as Miss India Australia.

"Personally, I never quoted my title wrong. Certain sections of the media may have got my title wrong when the news came out later. Some sections of media did get my title correct as well."

Rashi said she was "too busy preparing for one of the biggest performances in my life" to respond to such allegations. "As soon as the event was over, I did issue a clarification on my Facebook page which described my correct title."

According to the Herald Sun

newspaper, the title is actually held by Phalguni Kataria who is devastated at missing out on the opportunity to host the event and "utterly shocked someone else is claiming to be Miss India Australia".

"I had thought that it would be me who would be asked to host the Prime Minister, like Miss India USA had done in America," the report quoted Phalguni as saying.

The IACF, meanwhile, told IANS over phone that the anchors were selected following an audition process approved by its executive committee and being a beauty pageant contestant was never a consideration for a selection.

"The committee members of

IACF had chosen Rashi and Siddharth after a series of auditions. There was never any consideration that some beauty pageant winner would host the event," IACF's spokesperson Balesh Dhankhar said.

Leading up to the event, one of our hosts, Rashi, was interviewed by various media outlets. Some of those media outlets seem to have misquoted her title while reporting, he said.

"We clarify that Rashi was chosen based on her performance during the auditions and any title held by her did not have any role in her selection. Neither did she make any claim to us of holding any title for securing this role."

Indian-American Renu Khator to lead Dallas Fed board Washington (IANS): India born Renu Khator, University of Houston(UH) president and UH System chancellor, is set to lead the board of directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

Khator joined the board in 2011 and was appointed deputy chair in 2013.

The Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC, recently announced her appointment along with 11 other Federal Reserve Banks across US, according to a university release.

"I am excited and honoured to receive this opportunity, and for the recognition it brings to the University of Houston," Khator said.

"As chair, I look forward to adding my perspective to the important monetary policy discussions conducted by the talented and dedicated members of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas."

Among her 2014 honours are the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award and the Pride of India Award.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a number of announcements for PIOs (Person of Indian Origin) and OCIs (Overseas Citizenship of India). "...a draft Bill for amending the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which will enable merger of the PIO and OCI schemes, is expected to be brought to the Cabinet for approval shortly," a Prime Minister's Office communique said.

It added that visa-on-

arrival and electronic travel authorisation in respect of 43 countries had been scheduled for inauguration Nov 27.

The countries include the US, Australia, Fiji and Pacific islands.

"The government has already announced fulfilment of the following announcements made by the prime minister: Granting visa for life to PIO card holders, exemption for PIOs staying in India for long term from police reporting and issuance of

long-term (10 year) visas to US nationals on reciprocal basis," the communique said.

Modi, during his address at the Madison Square Garden in New York Sep 28, while talking about consular and visa issues said that the government will join the PIO and OCI schemes for the diaspora and a new scheme would soon be announced.

He also announced visaon-arrival facilities during his recent 10-day visit to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji.

"There was immense glee on the faces of our diaspora when I announced the visa-onarrival facilities and the OCI and PIO merger in Australia and Fiji," Modi wrote in his blog a day after ending his three-nation visit.

"It is our aim to make the diaspora an integral part of our development journey and since the last few months we have channelized our efforts in this regard," the prime minister added.

Four Indian American students picked as Rhodes scholars

Washington (IANS): Four Indian American students, Anisha Gururaj, Sai P. Gourisankar, Maya Krishnan and Abishek Kulshreshtha, are among 32 men and women chosen as 2015 Rhodes Scholars from the US. Considered the oldest and best known award for international study, Rhodes Scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England.

They were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, British philanthropist and African colonial pioneer. The first class of American Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904. The new batch will enter Oxford in October 2015.

A native of Chesterfield, Missouri, Anisha Gururaj is a senior majoring in chemical-

biological engineering, according to MIT. As a Rhodes Scholar, she plans to pursue two degrees from Oxford: an MSc in engineering science research, with a focus in bioengineering, and a master's in public policy.

Ultimately, she hopes to build a career developing affordable biomedical devices for use in both the developed and the developing world.

For the past two years, Gururaj has conducted research at MIT's Little Devices Lab, where she has worked on individualized medical devices that users can assemble themselves.

Gururaj has also co-founded a project to design a lowcost, nonelectric fluid warmer for military trauma victims.

Sai P. Gourisankar is a senior at the University of Texas,

where he will graduate in May with a BS in Chemical Engineering and a BA in Plan II Liberal Arts.

He also has a minor in German. He is a Goldwater Scholar with a 4.0 across multiple disciplines.

He has several publications relating to his work in nanotechnology, particularly relating to nanoclusters. He is also president of an organization that fosters discussion between the humanities and the sciences.

Maya Krishnan is a Stanford University senior majoring in Philosophy, with minors in Computer Science and Classics. Her book, "Modern Illuminations", includes 10 essays on the relationship between the theory of knowledge and theology.

"The people of Punjab expect from you that the guilty would finally be brought to book, no matter how well connected or politically powerful the person might be," Bajwa said in the letter.

Bajwa has been himself the target of Akali Dal leaders for his alleged links with the drugs mafia in Punjab in the past.

The Punjab Police had, last year, busted an international synthetic drugs racket in Punjab worth nearly Rs.6,000 crore [1 crore = 10 million]. The racket had links to Canada, US, Britain, and some other countries in Europe and southeast Asia.

Punjabi cinema not just about 'balle balle'

Panaji (IANS): Punjabi filmmaker Manjeet Mann, who co-produced National Aw a r d - w i n n i n g film "Shaheed-eMohabbat Boota Singh", says there are movies from her state that are rich in content too.

During a session titled "Cinemas of India Punjabi cinema" at the Film Bazaar, which concluded here Monday, she talked about the common misconception when it comes to Punjabi movies.

"Punjabi cinema is not just about 'balle balle'. I like to make films on true stories and most of them are tragedies," said the director of "Sukhmani - Hope for Life".

Anurag Singh, who has directed hit Punjabi films like "Jatt and Juliet" and "Punjab 1984", agreed with her, but said the majority is just "slapstick comedy".

"This year around 42 films released and 80 percent of those films are similar. They are all comedies, that too slapstick. So, the audience will ultimately get bored of it. We need to make more movies with strong content to make the industry grow," he said.

Distributor Munish Sahni, who was also one of the panelists, believes the "technicians need to be more professional".

"The Punjabi film industry is unorganised. Many people assume distribution is just a part time job, but it's not," he said.

The other challenge Punjabi filmmakers face is getting satellite rights.

"There are hardly 4-5 local channels that play more of Punjabi songs than movies. So, there is not much support from satellite. Music companies also don't pay us as they say physical sale of music doesn't take place. That is not true because you can't run a company if you are not earning profit," said Anurag Singh.

They, however, said they get good business from overseas.

"At least 50 percent of the money is recovered from overseas," Sahni said, adding that Canada is a strong market for Punjabi cinema.

NHRC notice to Punjab over five infants' death

Ludhiana still-born babies: doctor suspended, Senior Medical Officer transferred Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab government Monday ordered the suspension of a lady doctor and initiated an inquiry into the death of five still born babies at a government hospital in Ludhiana.

The doctor, Alka Mittal, a gynaecologist, was placed under suspension after preliminary enquiries revealed that she did not come to the Civil Hospital in Ludhiana on time Sunday, forcing the hospital staff to carry out the deliveries.

The hospital's Senior Medical Officer (SMO) R.K. Karkara was also transferred.

Five new born babies died during delivery leading to protests from affected families. The babies died during or just after delivery.

The mother and child care unit of the hospital had been inaugurated recently.

Affected families alleged that no doctors were available for delivery of the pregnant mothers and the hospital staff started conducting the procedure leading to

the deaths. They alleged that the infants died due to negligence of hospital doctors and staff.

State Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani had ordered a probe against Mittal Sunday evening.

Mittal had been charge sheeted by the state health department earlier this month for negligence.

Jayani told media after visiting the hospital Monday that a high level probe has been ordered into the deaths of the infants.

"Deputy Commissioner Ludhiana, Rajat Agarwal has been asked to hold a thorough inquiry and submit the report to the government within a week. He has also been asked to have his own team of officers to hold an independent inquiry into the entire incident," he said.

"Dr. Alka Mittal, a gynecologist who was already charge sheeted a few days back for negligence in discharging her duties, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. The SMO, R.K.Karkara, has been transferred for not

maintaining discipline in the medical institution," he said.

Jayani, however, said though a thorough probe has been ordered into the incident, but "the deaths were natural as babies did not have any heartbeat when the mothers were brought to hospital. The doctors present at the time of procedure did try their best to save lives".

Mittal claimed that the five delivery cases were already in critical condition when the mothers were brought to the hospital.

However, she could not justify her absence during duty hours and why the hospital staff had to carry out the deliveries instead of doctors.

Terming the incident as "unfortunate", Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal told media in Amritsar Monday that he had ordered an enquiry into the incident.

"If laxity was found on the part of any public servant in dealing with this incident, action would be taken as per law," he said.

New Delhi (IANS): The NHRC has issued notice to Punjab over the deaths of five babies in a Ludhiana hospital due to alleged lack of medical facilities, a statement said Tuesday.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report,

the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to Punjab principal secretary of health and family welfare department, seeking a report within two weeks.

Citing media reports, the NHRC said five newborn

died at Mother and Child Hospital in Field Ganj, Ludhiana Nov 23 due to lack of medical facilities.

The deaths occurred two days after the inauguration of the hospital by the state health minister, the commission said.

Cricketing world shocked at Hughes' death Sydney (IANS): The cricket world was left stunned Thursday as Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, who was struck on the head by a cricket ball, died in a hospital here.

The 25-year-old Hughes, who represented the national team in 26 Tests between 20092013, fractured his skull and suffered massive bleeding in his brain after being hit by pacer Sean Abbot's bouncer in a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New

South Wales (NSW) at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) Tuesday.

Hughes was carried off the ground on a stretcher and treated on the boundary before being rushed to a hospital where he underwent surgery. The match was abandoned following the incident.

The left-hander Hughes was in an induced coma at the St. Vincent's Hospital here after undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his

brain.

"He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday," Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said in the statement Thursday.

"He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends," Brukner said.

"As a cricket community, we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip's family and friends at this incredibly sad time," he added.

"Cricket Australia (CA) kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected."

Hughes scored three Test centuries. He also scored 26 first class centuries and was a prolific scorer for New South Wales, for whom he debuted at the age of 18 and later for South Australia.

Hughes was part of Australia's most recent Test squad, for the series against Pakistan in the UAE, but he was not called on to play a Test in that series.

CA termed the left-handed Hughes "a rising star" and said the untimely death of the batsman was a long-term loss for cricket in the country.

"Just shy of his 26th birthday, Phillip has been taken from us far too young. As a cricketer, he was an incredibly talented and dearly loved member of the Australian, South Australian and Adelaide Strikers squads and a former NSW representative," CA CEO James Sutherland said in a statement.

"He also played county cricket in England and Indian Premier League (IPL) in India.

Without doubt he was a rising star whose best cricket was still ahead of him."

Sutherland also said that Hughes had it ion him to have a long career in the game.

"The National selectors had certainly identified him as having a long-term future in the game. It was only a few days ago when announcing the first Test team for the forthcoming Indian series that National selector Rod Marsh said, 'He's a hell of a good batsman. He is a very, very good young player who has got 26 first-class hundreds'," he said.

As a result of this tragic development, the two-day tour match between the CA XI and

India was cancelled as a mark of respect towards the luckless cricketer.

"CA today advises that the two-day tour match between CA XI and India in Adelaide has been cancelled. The decision has been made in consultation with the players and the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA), following the tragic passing of Phillip Hughes earlier today," Pat Howard, CA executive general manager of team performance, said in a statement.

The Internaional Cricket Council (ICC) offered its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Hughes.

"We are all shocked and saddened with the news of Phillip's passing. On behalf of the entire cricket community, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to his family and friends," ICC chairman N. Srinivasan said in a statement.

Former Indian batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar led the cricketing community in offering condolences to the unfortunate star.

"Shocked to hear about Phil. Sad day for cricket. Deepest condolences to family, friends and well wishers. RIP," Tendulkar said of his former teammate at IPL side Mumbai Indians.

Joining the ICC, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian cricket team also offered their condolences to Hughes and his family.

Abbott, whose delivery struck Hughes, was also consoled by the cricketing fraternity.

"A very sad day for the world of cricket. So sorry for Phillip Hughes and his family. Spare a thought for Sean Abbott," Former England skipper Ian Botham tweeted.

Priyanka Chopra picks garbage for Clean India campaign ACTRESS Priyanka Chopra took it upon herself to clean up a garbage-strewn neighbourhood in Mumbai as part of her efforts towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Clean India campaign.

"Gandhiji said 'Be the change you want to see' - thank you @narendramodi for reminding me of that! #MyCleanIndia can happen! #ChangingMindsets," Priyanka posted on Twitter Monday after sharing a video link.

The 11-minute video chronicles how the efforts began, how Priyanka herself picked up the garbage, how the place was beautified, and how happy the residents were over the 16-day effort, which saw Priyanka along with her team cleaning

up an area in Versova here.

In the video, Priyanka also shared her idea of contributing to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan this way.

"It took me a little longer than

I wanted, but when the prime minister asked me to be one of his 'navratnas', I was very excited. But I wanted it to be something that could be sustained," she said.

John Abraham signs Harshvardhan for two more films TELUGU actor Harshvardhan Rane, who is making his Bollywood debut in John Abraham's home production "Satra Ko Shaadi Ho", has been signed on for two more yet-untitled projects by the banner.

"I signed all the three films long back.

I didn't want to jinx it by announcing (it earlier). It was an honour to be launched by John's production in Bollywood, and to be doing two more films under the same banner is even more exciting," Rane told IANS. While the actor awaits the release of "Satra Ko Shaadi Hai", he's yet to start shooting for the other two projects.

Rane, who is equally busy in Telugu filmdom, says he has no plans of shifting to Mumbai.

"My fans are happy that I'm doing Hindi films. I'm also getting Telugu movie offers. I want to concentrate on both the industries and so I have no plans of shifting (to Mumbai). I enjoy staying in my bachelor pad in Hyderabad," he said.

Northern Bengal recall team from junior national TT Alappuzha (Kerala) (IANS): The clampdown on age-fraud cases by the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has forced a total recall of the junior girls team by the North Bengal Table Tennis Association (NBTTA).

Even as a few team members landed here for the 76th Junior and Youth National Table Tennis Championships that began Tuesday, the NBTTA

which had sent online entries before the last date for the championships, withdrew all names without citing any reason. Some of the players had to return home midway through their journey to this district town.

Talking on the pullout, TTFI secretary general Dhanraj Choudhary said it was an unfortunate happening.

“But I am happy we are get-

ting the desired results. Maybe it is the impact of the medical board that we have constituted here to go into overage cases.

We have imposed strict guidelines to put a complete end to this menace,” said Choudhary.

Choudhary added that TTFI have taken a conscious decision following its executive board meeting held last month in New Delhi.

“Our executive board had

unanimously decided to suspend all players who have had two birth certificates. As a result we have spotted more than a dozen cases and intimated the respective state associations. A majority of them are from North Bengal and West Bengal,” he said.

Meanwhile, in some cases even West Bengal had recalled some players and instead sent in fresh entries raising suspi-

"To that effect, there is an urgent need to change this mindset. Women must be made aware that they are equal to men," Sania said.

Emphasising the importance of the government's involvement in affecting a change to make sports in India more inclusive and women friendly, she acknowledged the support of the sports minister to women's sports.

"Equality depends on each and all of us. From the government that changes its laws, to the company that advances equal pay and equal opportunity, to the mother and father who teach their daughter and son that all human beings should be treated equally, to the athletes who demonstrate equality and excellence," Sania said.

She said it was an "honour to serve UN Women as the Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia".

"It inspires me to work harder towards a level playing field for women. Gender equality in sports as well as using sports to advocate for gender equality in communities is essential," she said.

Explaining the reason for the UN Women's choice of making Sania their voice in South Asia, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women deputy executive director Lakshmi Puri said: "Sania is a woman of achievement and represents girls' and women's struggle for equality."

"She has been a role model to many children, including girls to break barriers and strive for their goals in life and career choices. She has used the spotlight on her professional success to highlight social issues that are of concern for many Indians, speaking out on issues such as the need to halt the practice of female foeticide and the decreasing sex ratio in India," said a statement by UN Women.

Kathak star Sitara Devi's death leaves huge void EMINENT danseuse Sitara Devi, who once impressed Rabindranath Tagore with a three-hour solo recital, died here Tuesday after prolonged illness, leaving behind a galaxy of bereaved fellow performers and fans who called her a "bright star" and warmly remembered her effervesence, spiritedness and generosity.

She was 94, and she died Tuesday after battling prolonged illness, her family said.

Apart from a bevy of performers and actors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tribute to the cultural icon, recalling her rich contribution to Kathak.

Sitara Devi was on ventilator at the Jaslok Hospital here and her condition became serious Monday. She was earlier admitted to the Cumballa Hill Hospital and Heart Institute.

The danseuse is survived by a

son and a daughter. Her funeral will take place Thursday morning after her son arrives from abroad, where he had gone for a show, her son-in-law Rajesh Mishra told IANS. A recipient of prestigious awards like Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri and Kalidas Samman, Sitara Devi was born Dhannolakshmi in the family of Brahmin 'kathakar' Sukhdev Maharaj in Kolkata in 1920.

When she turned 11, the family moved to Mumbai, where she impressed Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore with a three-hour solo recital.

Over the next six decades, she became a Kathak legend and is known as a pioneering force in bringing the genre to Bollywood.

"True to her name, she shone like a star and was the brightest

among her siblings and contemporaries," Pandit Birju Maharaj, a Kathak legend himself, told IANS. Sitara Devi used to learn Kathak from his father Achhan Maharaj and his uncles Lachhu and Shambu Maharaj.

"Her death has created an irreparable void in the Kathak world that very few people can fill," he added.

Her tryst with films included performed dance sequences in "Usha Haran" (1940), "Nagina" (1951), "Roti" and "Vatan" (both 1954), "Anjali" (1957) and the epic "Mother India" (1957), her final role in which she danced to a Holi song dressed as a boy.

From the Hindi film industry, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, veteran actor Manoj Kumar and star choreographer Saroj Khan were among those

who fondly remembered the magic of the danseuse, who was honoured with a Padma Shri.

A school dropout, Sitara Devi struggled against all odds to excel in her chosen field and brought Kathak from the domain of nautch girls to the global arena.

Her performance at the age of 16 before India's first Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Mumbai left him so impressed that he bestowed on her the title 'Nritya Samragini' (Empress of Dance). Later, over the years, she performed all over India and abroad, including prestigious venues like Royal Albert Hall, London (1967) and the Carnegie Hall, New York (1976).

Sitara Devi came from an ordinary but talented Brahmin family of Varanasi which lived in Kolkata and later in Mumbai.

She started short solo performances during movie intervals in a local theatre in Varanasi for a year when she was all of 10 and in 1931, the family shifted to Mumbai. Recognising her huge energy reserves, her father designed a stringent regimen for physical fitness, enabling her to somersault, swirl, wrestle and swing around a tall horizontal pole 100 times with agility till she was 75!

She carried that energy, vivaciousness and effervescence until her last breath.

Sitara Devi declined the Padma Bhushan, contending that she deserved a Bharat Ratna given her immense contribution to Kathak.

Alas, that was not to be. And the brightest star of Kathak finally faded away Tuesday morning.

A very neat feature in the Note is an optional bi-level cargo floor, called “DivideN-Hide” that creates both a large flat load floor with the rear seats folded and a covered security compartment.

On the road, the Nissan Note is amazingly quiet at cruising speed thanks to the double-sealed doors, acoustic windshield and extra sound proofing insulation that has been engineered into the car. Subcompact cars can be notoriously noisy, however the Note drives smoothly.

Handling is also good with tactile steering and just a trace of body lean on hard

cornering, but nothing that upsets the cars composure.

The Note is no sports performer with just 109 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft. torque, but does not feel weak and anemic. In fact the 1.6 engine is lively and quite the gas sipper with official Transport Canada fuel economy estimates of 6.1 L/100 km in the city, 4.8 on the highway and 5.5 combined for a Note with the optional CVT transmission, which is well matched to the motor. 2015 Infiniti Q50: Technology and Luxury comes together in this Luxury sedan

By Auto Reviewman The 2015 Infiniti Q50 four- door sedan is a fast, sporty luxury laden car with plenty of technology and panache. Interior wise, the Q50 offers a tad more shoulder room and legroom than the G37 and has a typical high-grade interior cabin.

Sumptuous leather seats and trim, fine wood inlays, soft textured plastics, and hefty metal trim meet, greet and cosset you. Of note- is the classy driver-centric interior layout that now uses even better materials, colours and design tricks.

General workmanship, fit and finish are excellent. The seats are comfortable and driver ergonomics are superb.

All 2015 Q50 models come with a choice of either Infiniti’s 328horsepower 3.7-litre V6 or the new Q50 Hybrid powertrain which combines a 302-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 with a 50 kW electric hybrid motor rated at 67 horsepower and 214 lbft of torque. The hybrid setup also features Infiniti's direct response hybrid system with intelligent dual clutch control. The standard transmission is a 7-speed automatic transmission with optional solid magnesium paddles.

The 2015 Infiniti Q50 3.7-litre V6 and 3.5-litre Hybrid models are available with a choice of rearwheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, and in a range of "S" sport appearance and performance features offering upgraded sport brakes and sport suspension.

Our tester was the AWD model with the Moonroof package and metallic paint coming in at $41,485

plus freight and PDE. New technology is very impressive and includes Infiniti direct adaptive steering system, uniquely engineered to control the Q50's tire angle and steering input and allowing even faster driver responses than a traditional mechanical system would. The adaptive steering setup also allows customization based on driver depending on road conditions.

The Q50's takes the lane guidance and warning system to another level with its Active Lane Control, which uses a camera-based lane marker detection system to keep the car in designated road lanes.

Meanwhile, the Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW) system can warn driver of risks they may not see is enhanced by its ability to sense the relative velocity and distance of a vehicle directly ahead and also two vehicles ahead.

The dash panel is very impressive, with two slick dual touchscreen displays (8-inch upper, 7inch lower), that work very well, However there are still a few hardbuttons under the lower touchscreen for dual use.

The technology here is very impressive - the updateable Infiniti InTouch Mobile Apps will read your texts and Facebook messages, understand your commands, and download Google Map routes from your iPhone or Android. Infiniti is aiming to develop an even bigger range of applications for the system in the future, but for now it is wonderfully high tech and impressive system. For those who may be lending the car to junior, the Infiniti fea-

tures the Geofencing remote monitoring system that can keep an eye on how they are using the Q50 using a number of parameters.

On the road.the 2015 Infiniti Q50’s new 3.7L V6 engine is improved and lightened. The 328 horsepower comes on strong at the mid- range of the tachometer in a pleasing burst of smooth power.

Acceleration is rapid but controlled with lots of passing and high speed cruising speed.

The Q50 has fast reflexes and relishes it when you put the power down. The ride of this sports suspension is certainly on the firm side.

The 3.7L V6 making 269 lb-ft at 5,200 rpm – feels bullet proof all the time and this is one of the best engines in this class when mated to the strong slick 7-speed automatic gearbox Revised intake and exhaust tuning, along with a taller

final drive ratio mean fuel economy is improved with EPA estimates for the RWD Q50 3.7 are 10.6 L/100 km city and 6.7 highway. The All-wheeldrive Q50 nets 11.3 city and 7.3 highway. The all-wheel drive Q50 Hybrid, (Not tested) is rated at 7.5 city and 6.3 highway.

The Infiniti Q50’s Direct Adaptive Steering is the world’s first automotive application of fully drive-bywire steering. This unique system uses steering wheel-mounted activators to monitor driver inputs and then sends electronic signals through microprocessors, to activators located at the wheels for a super precise and quick steering adjustments. All this trickery is controlled seamlessly by on-board computer.

This same system using radar and cameras also scans the road surface and painted lane lines and The lane-departure detection sys-

tem will warn you if the Q50 is drifting out lane, but it can actually steer the car back in between the lines.

Note, however for added safety, a conventional steering rack is also fitted as a backup safety aid.

The Q50 is very refined and a pleasure to drive, with its comfortable cabin, sporty handling and pleasant road manners. Canadian pricing starts at $37,500 for the base rear-drive 328-hp Q50 3.7 with 17inch alloys and leatherette interior.

At the top of the rear-wheel range is the fully loaded Q50S (Sport) at $47,950. All-wheel drive models range from $39,950 to $51,750. The hybrid comes in both RWD and AWD, ranging from $47,000 to $56,450.By Auto Reviewman 2015 Infiniti Q50 Sports sedan.

Hyundai will offer a hydrogen-powered Tucson in Canada After being initially exclusive to California since 2013 in North America, Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel-cell Tucson is coming to Canada.

It will be available starting early next year, but there’s a catch — the Hyundai Tucson FCEV will be offered to consumers in Vancouver, and will only be available on a threeyear lease.

Paired to a lithium-polymer battery, the Tucson FCEV combines oxygen with hydrogen stored on-board by drawing air into the fuel-cell stack and creates electricity as a result. The electricity is then used to both

power the electric motor and charge the battery. There is no combustion and no moving parts in the fuel-cell stack, and the only byproduct is water vapour.

In total, the Tucson FCEV takes about five minutes to refuel and can travel up to 426 kilometres. The $599-per-month lease deal includes complimentary maintenance and unlimited refueling.

In addition to Canada and the U.S., the Hyundai Tucson FCEV is offered in select countries across Europe and, of course, Hyundai’s home market of South Korea.
