VANCOUVER Police sources told The VOICE that they do NOT want to join the integrated police teams, including the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), that Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, recently suggested that all police departments do.

They noted that their [Vancouver Police] system “is working really well for the citizens of Vancouver.”

And former solicitor general Kash Heed told me that “integration has proven not to be as effective as they make it out to be” and bluntly noted that Anton “should make the

decision to regionalize policing in Metro Vancouver.”

Top Vancouver Police sources told me on Wednesday: “We are able to control our resources. We are able to put more or less on it depending on the incident. We have the ability to do that within our own system and so that serves people living in Vancouver well.”

They also noted: “The fact is that most of the big homicides don’t happen in Vancouver anymore. They happen in various RCMP jurisdictions basically. We commit our resources basically to augment RCMP numbers.

RATTAN'S RUMBLE SURREY’S civic political scene has undergone a dramatic change over the past two years with visible minorities – especially the powerful South Asian component - waking up to ground realities.

Until recently, all that South Asians thought about were the federal (MP) and provincial (MLA) scenes.

Being a “mere” councillor was not worth it for them – and the mayor’s seat was considered just impossible.

But the awakening was taking place in stages – first with the election of Tom Gill as councillor, then with Barinder Rasode also joining the ranks of councillors, and finally, Rasode’s bold, ambitious step to go for the mayor’s seat.

Once the highly popular Mayor Dianne Watts (love her or hate her) decided to move on to federal politics (her provincial ambitions were

Vancouver Police ask for public’s help to solve Halloween attack on South Asian teenager VANCOUVER Police are asking for the public’s help to solve a Halloween attack that sent a teenager to hospital with serious injuries.

On October 31 at around 11 p.m., the 16-year-old boy left a house party, and was last seen in the south lane of East 60th Avenue near Inverness Street.

Around 6 a.m., the teenager knocked on the door of a home on East 60th Avenue near Ross Street and asked for help. He was bleeding, shirtless and shoeless.

He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed as having suffered a possible stab wound to the chest, a collapsed lung and scrapes and bruises to his face.

His cell phone, jewelry and wallet were missing.

The victim is South Asian, has short black hair, a moustache and was wearing a black toque and a silver chain around his neck.

“There are pieces to this puzzle that are still missing,” says VPD spokesperson Sgt. Randy Fincham. “Someone out there

knows what happened to this young man between the hours of 11 p.m. on October 31 and 6 a.m. on November 1.

You've got to establish that there's a need for it, and generally, and certainly since the time of the missing women tragedy in Vancouver, there has been a greater interest and emphasis by police departments in working together.

of the first things he did when he became the West Vancouver Police Chief was “to take that department out of IHIT and I contracted with the Vancouver Police’s homicide section” to investigate their homicide cases.

Heed said: “When Suzanne Anton, like many others, might say ‘we encourage it,’ but unless there is a strong decision by the Justice Minister to make it happen, it’s not going to happen.”

But he added: “I don’t think she should force integration because integration has proven not to be as effective as they make it out to be.”

Heed pointed out: “When you look at the whole integration thing – and I often use this comment – it’s just a

band-aid solution to the big, gaping wound. And the big, gaping wound is the balkanized police system we have in Metro Vancouver. So you cannot just piecemeal this together.

“If she wants to make a decision for policing, she should make the decision to regionalize policing in Metro Vancouver. It’s what I have been calling for and many others have been calling for for many years, but unfortunately there is no movement by provincial government to make it happen, because it’s not going to happen if you leave it up to municipal government. It has to be the provincial government, because they are the ones under the Constitution Act that are responsible for policing in their province.”

Dean Drysdale wins Conservative nomination from Cloverdale-Langley City, Dave Hayer knocked out in second round

FORMER Langley City councillor Dean Drysdale won the Conservative Party nomination from CloverdaleLangley federal riding on Saturday night.

Drysdale won in the third round of voting, defeating life insurance salesman Mike Garisto 528 to 503 – 25 votes.

The other two candidates were Surrey business lawyer Tako van Popta and former Liberal MLA Dave Hayer who got knocked out in the second round.

Surrey businessman Paul Brar, who had to withdraw from the nomination race along with Gurmant Grewal, supported Drysdale.

Tako van Popta got only 206 votes in the first round, while Drysdale led with 422 votes, followed by Garisto with 335 votes and Hayer with 345 votes.

Ninderjit Singh, Poonam Randhawa’s killer, receives seven years’ prison time for 1997 shooting outside theatre NINDERJIT Singh, 36, who is already serving a life sentence for killing his former 18-year-old girlfriend, Poonam Dhillon of Vancouver, in 1999, on Monday received a seven-year sentence from B.C. Supreme Court Justice Arne Silverman for shooting Roger Manhas outside a Vancouver movie theatre in May 1997. The sentence will run concurrent with the life sentence.

Two men had demanded seats from Manhas and his wife in a theatre. When the couple left the theatre, Ninderjit shot him in the backside and legs.

Ninderjit also put the gun to his head.

In his impact statement, Manhas said that the incident had cost him his marriage as he was never the same person mentally.

Ninderjit has been banned from possessing firearms for life and has to provide a DNA sample.

JUST last September, the B.C. Court of Appeal upheld the conviction of Ninderjit, who had pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of

He was arrested in California in August 2011 and subsequently extradited back to Canada to face a first-degree murder charge in the slaying of Randhawa, but he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder in B.C. Supreme Court in a surprise move in March 2013 just when his trial by jury was to have begun. The following month he was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 16 years by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Butler.

But Singh filed a notice in the B.C. Court of Appeal against that conviction and sentence, claiming that Butler erred in a number of ways. He wanted a new trial ordered.

However, the Crown also filed a notice in the Appeal Court that stated that if a new trial was ordered then they should be allowed to try him for first-degree murder.

ON January 26, 1999, just after Randhawa had turned 18, Ninderjit, who also went by the names of Soos and Bira or Beera, took her in his car, shot her in the head and dumped her body in a Vancouver alleyway in the 1400-block West of 47th Avenue.

Ninderjit had reportedly courted Randhawa for nearly a year, but she told no one about her secret dating. When she could not tolerate his advances, she moved to another school, Winston Churchill secondary in Vancouver, and also changed her home phone number. But Ninderjit kept stalking her. Her friends and family were baffled as to why she went out with him that afternoon.

Ninderjit fled to the U.S., where he was nearly nabbed in San Jose. He managed to escape minutes before police knocked on his friend's house.

But Vancouver Police never stopped looking for him and on August 23, 2011, Deputy Chief Constable Warren Lemcke, Investigation Division, announced that they had got him.

Ninderjit was nabbed on August 19 in Irvine, near Los Angeles.

Inspector Brad Desmarais of Vancouver Police’s Major Crime Section told the media in 2011: “Ninderjit Singh was featured on the TV show America’s Most Wanted and was the focus of numerous media appeals.

Investigators received numerous tips and followed up leads from across North America over the next twelve and a half years but Ninderjit Singh was never located. …

“Several weeks ago, VPD investigators became aware of a name that Ninderjit Singh had possibly assumed as his false identity. They contacted Homeland Security Investigations at the US Consulate in Vancouver, who immediately made available numerous resources required by homicide investigators.

“An intensive investigation began, which involved Homeland Security Investigations agents based in Los Angeles and VPD homicide investigators working in Southern

“On Friday, August 19, investigators located Ninderjit Singh at work in Irvine, California, but he had altered his appearance so much that investigators needed to be able to confirm his identity.

“Around 11:30 a.m. that same day, investigators arranged for a California Highway Patrol officer to pull over Ninderjit Singh, who was driving a big rig, and issue him a ticket. Ninderjit Singh’s thumbprints were obtained during the traffic stop.

The thumbprints were rushed to a local police department to be compared to the fingerprints held by VPD homicide investigators.

“By 1:15 p.m., investigators had what they needed: a confirmed fingerprint match. They had determined that the thumbprints taken from the truck driver in Irvine, California, matched those of Ninderjit Singh.

“Just after 2 p.m., another traffic stop was conducted in Riverside County after a vehicle was observed leaving Ninderjit Singh’s residence. The traffic stop was co-ordinated by Homeland Security

7 Investigations agents and VPD homicide investigators. In the vehicle was Ninderjit Singh, his wife and their two young children.

“Ninderjit Singh was arrested on a provisional warrant without incident. He immediately confirmed his real identity and stated that he was aware he was wanted for murder in Canada. …

“It has since been determined that Ninderjit Singh had allegedly used a false identity to acquire a US Social Security number in New York in 2000. He lived in Northern California for a number of years before moving to Southern California. He was

married outside of California and obtained an out-of-state drivers licence, all of this using his false identity. He has worked as a long-haul truck driver and had made weekly trips between Los Angeles and the Seattle, Washington area for the past few years.

“Ninderjit Singh’s wife has been interviewed. She has allegedly stated that she did not know his real identity or that he was wanted for murder.”

Singh was lodged in a Los Angeles jail until his extradition back to Canada.

IN March 2013, during the sentencing hearing for Singh,

Crown counsel Sandy Cunningham told court that every member of his family lied to police about his whereabouts and any contact with him. Yet his mom went to California to spend time with him and his wife after his two kids were born.

Changing his appearance and with a false identity, he eluded police for more than 12 years.

Vancouver Police investigators finally carried out a Mr. Big undercover operation. Posing as members of a criminal organization, they zeroed in on Singh’s half-brother Parmjit Soos in Calgary and tracked down Singh in San Jacinto,

California.

Soos was trying to arrange an operation to alter his brother’s fingerprints and police told him that they knew a surgeon in Las Vegas. They provided him with a cellphone that was to be used only for contacting Singh.

Through that cellphone, police got hold of Singh’s phone number and address.

Cunningham said Singh’s friend, Paul Aulakh, who was driving the vehicle in which Randhawa was shot signed an immunity agreement. He claimed that he didn’t know that Singh had a gun or that he planned to harm Randhawa.

New study reports on substance abuse service for Punjabi Sikh communities in Fraser Health Region A new study by the nonprofit agency Genesis Family Empowerment Society on substance abuse in South Asian Punjabi Sikh communities in Surrey reveals a large gap between community needs and the services that are in place. The Fraser Health Authority is responsible for substance abuse services in the Surrey region. The study suggests that front-line service providers like nurses, doctors, counsellors and social workers are all working tirelessly to address substance abuse in South Asian communities, but the problem remains and in fact is growing, and this may be because more culturally responsive services are more resources are need-

“This study reveals some gaps – both in the lack of services afforded to Punjabi Sikh communities – and the fact that many of these services are not culturally and linguistically appropriate,” advises the study co-author Manraj Cheema. “It also points out greater need for collaboration among all service providers to address the needs of South Asian families.”

“This report clearly points

out that the effects are not only felt by the person addicted to alcohol and other substances, but it is also felt by the person’s spouse, their parents, their extended family and their children. In fact, the negative impact on a family’s emotional wellness can last for generations,” advises Gary Thandi, another of the study’s authors. “If we can better address these needs, we can minimize the damage. Unfortunately, the need far outstrips current resources. While increased funding is needed, so too is the need for those of us in the field to think more innovatively in how we can address the social, emotional and health difficulties of these communities.”

The report suggests greater and more innovative outreach is needed to reach those suffering from alcohol and others substances abuse. “These community members may not come out to the mainstream services, like outpatient programs,” explains Cheema. “But this study suggests that they are showing up in hospitals with severe health problems related to alcohol and substance abuse. So innovative ways to reach them, ways that can connect with clients both culturally and in their first language, are necessary.”

“Many people suffering from addiction, or their family members, are still working, yet most services offered are on weekdays,” says Thandi. “South Asian community members could benefit from more services on evening and weekends. As well, we need to explore creative partnerships, such as providing services at doctor’s offices, which is where many addicts first turn for

Sikhs stand in unity in front of United Nations in New York to continue demanding justice for 1984 Genocide

HUNDREDS of Sikhs from all over the world gathered last week in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York to stand in solidarity and send a message to the world that the November 1984 Sikh Genocide has not and will not be forgotten. The spirit this time was more serious but hopeful in getting closer to having the 1984 massacre recognized as a genocide and pressuring the Indian Government to punish the perpetrators. With the world listening, especially through social media, transmitting these messages was easier than in the past. There were speakers, including myself, at the event who spoke about the Indian Government casting a blind eye to the Sikh grievances, including two witnesses of 1984, Jasbir Singh from California, one of the prime witnesses against Congress (I) leader Jagdish Tytler, who’s one of the main accused in the 1984 Sikh massacre, and Gurdeep Kaur from India to share about their witnessing of the state violence that was inflicted on innocent Sikhs.

You had to be there to experience the mood, but I will try to capture some of it in this piece. With hundreds of Sikhs from across North America, including Vancouver, B.C., standing in front of the United Nations, which is a symbolic space for civil and human rights, the mood was positive, but serious. The cold weather reflected the numbness and awe many were feeling upon hearing the speeches of how little India has done over 30 years to address Sikh grievances and punish the guilty.

There were two main messages conveyed throughout the event which was evident with the posters and signs that Sikhs from all generations held up for the world to read. Firstly, the goal was to illuminate that what had happened to Sikhs in Delhi and across the region, was not a riot, but genocide; and secondly, to educate the public about rights to self-determination and

Indeed, the desire for a Sikh homeland was in the forefront of the Sikh psyche which was evident to me when, on the way to the event, we passed the flags of the world’s nations which flew in front of the United Nations building, and one Sikh pointed towards the flags and said: “One day our flag will be standing with the others here.” These words illustrate that the hope for a Sikh nation is alive. Also, when Jasbir Singh spoke to me about his eye witness accounts of state violence in November, which he had done over the last four consecutive years, this time he added that justice for him in addition to having the perpetrators punished was a “Sikh homeland.”

When I asked Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) legal advisor and a human rights lawyer, about the purpose of the event, he responded: “This is the 30th year of the Sikh Genocide ... the successive Indian governments are given full impunity resulting in the perpetrators, who are members of Parliament, enjoying their life at liberty and successfully. stories with the public. Standing next to her was Jasbir Singh who listened attentively. He told me afterwards how her story brought back memories for him. He said: “I feel a connection with her when she recounted what she had seen in 1984.”

Singh added that these gatherings where “everyone comes together and can share in the pain and sorrow of 1984, makes me feel less alone.”

There is no doubt that the horrendous events of 1984 continue to haunt Sikhs. This was also evident in my fieldwork across Canada, USA, Europe and Punjab (in India and Pakistan), as front of the United Nations and just want one agenda that justice means independence now. For that particular reason, we will begin with the Sikh community, Sikh Diaspora throughout the world and ask one question whether we should be an independent nation and, in 2020, we will be holding a referendum.”

Significant as well was that members of Sikhs for Justice along with Jasbir Singh and Gurdeep Kaur, the two witnesses gave their accounts at the United Nations when the Sikhs for Justice submitted a report titled, “November 1984 Sikh Genocide” for UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon.

Indeed, the movement towards recognizing the Sikh Genocide has moved forward since last November where at a rally in front of the United Nations in Geneva, organized by Sikhs for Justice, Movement Against Repression ( MAR) and the All India Sikh Students Federation, several Sikhs told me that they felt a sense of victory with a petition signed by a million people worldwide to have the United Nations investigate the systematic killing of Sikhs in November 1984 and to recognize it as "genocide" under the conventions on genocide.

Gurpdeep Kaur, a survivor of the 1984 Genocide, told me that the only justice for her would be when the culprits would be hanged. But she does not feel it will happen in India. However, she added: “I am hopeful that Sikhs outside of India will pressure the Indian government to deliver justice.” She broke down in tears and it was evident that she had relived the pain and trauma as the memories surfaced again, especially when she spoke about oneand-a-half-year-old twins being thrown into the oven and seeing how seriously they were injured in the hospital when she was there attending to her husband.

She said: “The doctor at the time said that the body of the infant was do badly damaged it was better to put him to death, because he would not have a good life given the seriousness of his injury.”

After Punjabi songs, Danish damsel opts for Indian wedding

Hoshiarpur (Punjab) (IANS): A Danish beauty, who croons Punjabi songs, has married a Dane in a traditional Punjabistyle wedding here with several of their friends and relatives from Denmark and other parts of the world attending the ceremony.

Singer Anita Lerche, born and raised in a small town, Herlev, on the outskirts of CopenhagenDenmark, has two albums of Punjabi songs under her belt already. Her latest album, "Sadke Punjab Ton" was released at her Punjabi wedding here Sunday.

Her first album of Punjabi songs, "Heer from Denmark", was released in 2006.

"It was amazing to be a 'Punjabi Kudi' bride. I am so much in love with Punjabi culture and tradition. People are so warm here.

Though Soren Hjorth (her hus-

band) and I got married in Denmark in June (this year), I always wanted to have an Indian wedding," a super-excited Anita, who was boarding her flight Tuesday to Hyderabad for an event, told IANS. "I felt like a princess. For the main 'Lavaan-phere' and 'Mehendi' ceremonies, I had picked up a beautiful long kurtachuridaar from an Indo-Pak exhibition. For the wedding reception, I wore a 'LehengaCholi'. I was looking so pretty. My mother (Bibbi Lerche) and others also dressed up in traditional Indian dresses," Anita said.

The Indian-style wedding was performed at the residence of family friend Anurag Sood, a businessman here. Anurag and his wife, Tracy, did the 'Kanyadaan' (giving away the daughter in marriage) ritual.

TV producer Agyapal Singh Randhawa and Jalandhar-based media baron Vijay Chopra remained closely associated to ensure that Anita had a great wedding.

"Under the Sarv Dharam Sambhavana committee, we all helped to organise her wedding. It was her wish to have a Punjabi-style wedding and all went off very well. Everyone really enjoyed," Anurag Sood told IANS. "The couple and guests from Denmark and other countries at the wedding enjoyed it thoroughly. The bride and groom came on two elephants," Kultar Singh, owner of Garden Court, where the wedding reception took place, told IANS. Anita fell in love with Punjab, its culture and music during a back-pack trip to the region in 2005. It was her love for Punjabi music which attracted her to singing Punjabi songs.

"Punjab has become my second home (after Denmark). In the last nine and a half years, I have lived in Punjab for almost five-six months every year," said Anita, who has sung in 16 different languages and sings Punjabi songs and even Hindi bhajans (hymns).

One of the songs that is close to her heart is 'Lathe di Chaddar' sung by legendary Punjabi singer, Surinder Kaur.

When she performs in Punjab and sings hymns, Anita makes it a point to cover her head with a 'chunni'.

"Sat Sri Akal jee. Wahe Guru ji da Khalsa, Wahe Guru ji di Fateh.

28 percent increase in students from India since 2013 in United States: 134,292 Indian students

WASHINGTON: “SEVIS by the Numbers,” a quarterly report on international students studying in the United States, was released Thursday by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

The report includes the latest data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a Web-based system that includes information about international students, exchange visitors and their dependents while they are in the United States.

Based on data extracted from SEVIS Octobere 7, 1.11 million international students, using an F (academic) or M (vocational) visa, were enrolled at nearly 9,000 U.S. schools. This marked a nine percent increase when compared to October 2013 data.

Seventy-five percent of all international students were from Asia. The top 10 countries of citizenship for international students included: China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil.

China and Vietnam had the greatest percentage increase in students studying in the United States at 22 and 21 percent, respectively, when compared to statistics extracted from SEVIS July 8. The University of Southern California, New York University, Columbia University, Purdue University and the University of Illinois ranked one through five among U.S. schools with the most international stu-

dents.

Nearly 400,000 international students pursued STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) coursework in October, an increase of nearly 50,000 from July data. Sixty-nine percent of international students studying STEM fields were male.

Eighty-five percent of international students studying STEM coursework were from Asia.

More international students studied engineering than any other STEM field of study, with 27 percent of those engineering students coming from India.

The October report includes a special section about international students from India. As of October 7, there were 134,292 Indian students studying in the United States. This marked a 28 percent increase since October 2013. The majority of these students studied in California, Texas, New York, Illinois and Massachusetts, and 73 percent of Indian students were enrolled in master’s degree programs.

Seventy-nine percent of students from India studied STEM coursework, comprising 26 percent of the total international student population pursuing STEM coursework in the United States.

Other key points from the report include: 77 percent of SEVP-certified schools had between zero and 50 international students; 73 percent of international students

were enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programs; and California, New York and Florida had the most SEVP-certified schools. A school must be SEVP-certified before it can enroll international students.

SEVP monitors approximately one million international students pursuing academic or vocational studies (F and M visa holders) in the United States and their dependents. It also certifies schools and programs that enroll these students. The U.S. Department of State monitors exchange visitors (J visa holders) and their dependents, and oversees exchange visitor programs.

Both use SEVIS to protect national security by ensuring that students, visitors and schools comply with U.S. laws. SEVP also collects and shares SEVIS information with government partners, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, so only legitimate international students and exchange visitors gain entry into the United States.

HSI reviews potential SEVIS records for potential violations and refers cases with potential national security or public safety concerns to its field offices for further investigation.

Additionally, SEVP’s Analysis and Operations Center reviews student and school records for administrative compliance with federal regulations related to studying in the United States.

television programs are broadcast mainly from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. Also, Hindi newspapers and magazines are being published from the same cities. Obviously, to promote Hindi we need more print and electronic outlets.

Prof. Jagmohan Humar thought that unless we speak Hindi in our homes only then the language will be continued to be spoken by the next generation or else it may disappear slowly from the families.

“There is interest among the younger generation but we have to make teaching interesting and useful,” noted Yogesh Kumar. Rajiv Ranjan said that it is the responsibility of parents to see their children are learning Hindi and practicing at home.

“We are not serious and persuasive about teaching Hindi to our children,” said Kulbir Mehra. According to Pundit Shiv Shankar Dwivedi, the mother language is the symbol of an individual's identity and we should be proud of promoting it as our cultural heritage. He said that we should use simple language in literature and in our communication, too. Dr. Prithviraj Kalia, a journalist, declared that modern technological tools such as blogging and web are used by Hindiwalas, but more needs to be done on this front.

The evening's highlight was the Kavi Sammelan, which was conducted by Hindi and Sanskrit scholar Pundit Dwivedi. He frequently applied Hindi Rubaiyat to introduce the poets successfully. Acharya Shrinath P. Dwivedi, Dr. Jagmohan Humar, Dr. Desh Mitra, Rajiv Ranjan, Dr. Prithviraj Kalia, Pramod Kumar, Sarla Sharma, Sita Sarasvat, Pemla Malhotra and Sendy Gill recited their poems, ghazals and songs which were well appreciated.

IN BRIEF TRUCKER HARJIT LOTAY: Transport truck driver Harjit Lotay, who was in a November 2012 crash that killed Surrey RCMP Constable Adrian Oliver who was driving an unmarked police cruiser that slammed into Lotay’s semi-tractor at the 148th Street and 64th Avenue crossing in Surrey, is being sued by Canada’s attorney general. A civil suit filed in B.C. Supreme Court claims that Lotay made a negligent driving manoeuvre that resulted in his vehicle crossing into the path of the RCMP vehicle. There are also other allegations.

The suit seeks special damages from Lotay and his employer Heaven Transport for the police cruiser and expenses for fitting up a replacement vehicle. But no claims have been proven in court.

Field Hockey Canada: Sumesh Putra and Paul Chohan among three members of inaugural Hall of Fame class inducted in Vancouver ceremony SUMESH Putra, Paul Chohan and Dr. Harry Warren were the first of the inaugural Field Hockey Canada Hall of Fame members to be inducted in a ceremony Wednesday night in Vancouver.

The three honourees were joined by family, friends, current national athletes and Field Hockey Canada alumni to celebrate their successes, passion and dedication to the sport of field hockey in Canada.

Representing the late Dr. Harry Warren were both

his daughter Charlotte and son Victor, who was a long-time member of the Canadian Men's National Team.

According to a report by Field Hockey Canada, the event was emceed by Women's National Team veteran and current active cap leader, Thea Culley.

Also in attendance were Canadian Minister of Sport Bal Gosal, and B.C.’s Minister of Technology Andrew Wilkinson.

Former Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis, who is also the father of current women's national team captain Kate Gillis, hosted a hotstove panel featuring several of the guests including Chohan Putra, Gosal, current women's national team alternate-captain Dani Hennig and head coach Ian Rutledge.

Also making an appearance at the event were several members of the 2014 silver medal-winning Canadian Youth Olympic Games Hockey 5s team, making the event a true celebration of the past, present and future of field hockey in Canada.

Each inductee was honoured with a special video highlighting their careers and contributions to field hockey.

The Field Hockey Canada Hall of Fame was made possible through support from the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Sport Canada.

Paul “Bubli” Chohan – Athlete One of Canada’s most capped international field hockey players, with 317 caps, Paul “Bubli” Chohan was a staple in major international competition throughout his lengthy career. Paul competed in three Olympic Games (1976, 1984, and 1988), three World Cups (1976, 1986, 1990), and six PanAmerican Games (1975, 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995). In these competitions, Paul was an essential part of a contingent that won two Pan-American gold and four silver medals, he also served as the Canadian flag bearer at the ’95 Pan-Am Games.

Eleven small businesses in Surrey nominated for 2014-15 Small Business BC Awards

THE 2015 Small Business BC Awards opened for nominations on October 1, attracting more than 290 British Columbia-based small businesses who have been nominated so far.

Surrey Mounties unveil new public memorial for fallen officers

ON Friday (November 14), Surrey RCMP hosted a special ceremony to unveil a new public memorial cairn that was recently rebuilt outside the Surrey RCMP’s main detachment.

The event was dedicated to the memory of those officers of the Surrey RCMP who gave their lives whilst in the performance of their duties: Constable Archie Lepine, Constable Roger Pierlet, Constable Terry Draginda, Constable John Baldwinson, and Constable Adrian Oliver.

Surrey RCMP Officer-in-Charge Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy, RCMP Lower Mainland District Commander Assistant Commissioner Dan Malo and Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts presided over the ceremony.

and veteran RCMP officers were also in attendance to commemorate the unveiling.

India successfully test fires nukecapable missile Bhubaneswar (IANS): India Friday successfully test fired its nuclear capable Dhanush missile from a warship off the Odisha coast hours after conducting a training launch of Prithvi-II missile from a military base in the state, a senior defence official said.

Dhanush was test fired from a naval ship off the coast of the state over the Bay of Bengal around 7.40 pm. The launch was part of an exercise by the armed forces and the missile reached the designated target with high precision, official said.

The missile launch and its flight performance were monitored from the Integrated Test range at Chandipur in state's Balasore district, about 230 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, the test range director M.V.K.V. Prasad told IANS. Dhanush was test fired hours after armed forces successfully test-fired the nuclearcapable surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile from the Integrated Test Range as a part of routine training exercise.

"It was a text book launch," Prasad said.

The indigenously-developed Prithvi-II ballistic missile has the capability to hit a target 350 km away.

Developed and built exclusively for the Indian Navy, Dhanush has a 250 to 250 km striking range and can carry a single warhead of up to 750 kg.

The missile, which is a part of India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, is about 8.53 metres long and 0.9 metre wide and has a launch weight of about 4.4 tonnes. It uses liquid propellant.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday congratulated Indian scientists on the successful test firing of Prithvi-II missile.

"I extend my heartiest congratulations to all those associated with the successful test-firing of India's indigenously developed Prithvi-II surface-to-surface missile," the president said in a message to Avinash Chander, Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister and Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development.

This significant scientific breakthrough has given a commendable boost to our efforts to step up indigenisation and improve selfreliance in our defence capabilities, he said.

Modi said in his message: "I congratulate the hard work of our scientists that has been instrumental in the successful test fire of Prithvi-II missile".

“I am honoured to be here today to pay special tribute to the five fallen members who served

with Surrey Detachment,” said Fordy. “This memorial cairn will serve as a reminder to the pub-

lic and our officers of the sacrifice that these five men made in serving the City of Surrey.”

PRIME Minister Stephen Harper on Tuesday issued the following statement to mark Remembrance Day: “Today we remember the courage and dedication of the Canadian men and women who have fought valiantly over the years to defend our freedom and rights, making it possible for us to live in a peaceful, democratic country where we enjoy one of the best qualities of life in the world.

“For the past two centuries, hundreds of thousands of Canadians have earned enormous respect – at home and abroad – by answering the call to fight against tyranny and evil around the world in engagements such as the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan and many other international military operations. Those who fought so valiantly in these battlefields are still honoured and remembered in places such as Vimy Ridge, Ypres, Normandy, Sicily, Hill 355 in Korea, and Kandahar to name a few.

Many made the ultimate sacrifice.

“It is our duty to remember the Canadians who so selflessly defended our freedom. That is why the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War are two of the major milestones on the Road to 2017. also remember how early Canadians, First Nations and Métis people fought together like never before in the War of 1812 to repel an American invasion, laying the foundation for an independent Canada.

IT’S starting to look a lot like Christmas with the colourful windows popping up along King George Boulevard in Surrey. On Thursday, November 20, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association is hosting the second annual Santa Window Walk.

The Santa Window Walk is a unique event that combines all levels of community by pairing local businesses, charities, and art students.

Teams of talented students from local high schools will paint a holiday design representing a local charity on the windows of participating businesses.

On November 20, these windows will be unveiled.

Charities will be stationed outside their window collecting donations and fundraising for their cause. Play the lollipop pull at the Christmas Bureau’s window or try some tasty baked goods from Harmony House. Everyone is invited to stroll through the Santa Window Walk route with live holiday music featured along the way.

This year, the windows of TD Bank, Round Up Café, Labour Unlimited, KFC, Church’s Chicken, Jiffy Cleaners, Al’s Vacuum, Westland Insurance, Pharmasave, Enterprise, Whalley Optical, Surrey Urban Mission, the Canadian Post Office, and Rave Re-up will all receive a window make-over from students from Sullivan Heights, Fleetwood Park, Fraser Heights, Night Shift, Frank Hurt, Southridge and Earl Marriot.

Charities/non-profits that are participating this year include: The Surrey Food Bank, Umoja, The Child Development Foundation, Night Shift Ministries, Surrey Christmas Bureau, Girl Guilds, Kinsman Lodge, Surrey Hospice Society, Harmony House, Surrey Animal Resource Centre, Surrey Urban Mission, Beneath One Sky, and Pacific Community Resource Society.

Women candidates for BC municipal office still fewer than men ON both the mayoral and city council fronts in the 2014 BC local government elections this Saturday, there are fewer women than men running for municipal elected office.

Out of 423 individuals running for mayor, only about a quarter (24 percent) are women.

Several PhD students at the University of British Columbia have collected and analyzed the data on the numbers of women candidates running in the upcoming

municipal elections. Grace Lore, PhD candidate in political science, found that in almost half (47 percent) of BC municipalities, there are no women running for mayor, and in only 15 municipalities (less than 9 percent) are there two or more women candidates for mayor.

City council candidate numbers are similarly asymmetric. Lore found that only 88 out of 287 (30 percent) candidates for city council in BC’s 10 largest municipalities are women. In the 2014 provincial election

more women ran for both the NDP (38%) and the Liberals (35%) than are now running for council in most major cities in British Columbia. Nanaimo has the fewest women running for city council (19 percent), and Kamloops has the most (41 percent). In Vancouver, only 33 percent of candidates are women.

Punjab, Lockheed Martin tie up for solar power Chandigarh (IANS): To augment solar power generation in the state and overcome the power crisis, the Punjab government Friday announced a tie up with US global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin.

The state will add 1000 MW solar power in the next three years with Lockheed Martin providing plastic structures for solar panels on canals by using nano-technology.

"The company would also provide stateof-the-art technology to convert paddy straw into energy, solving the lingering problem of paddy straw burning in the state. The Punjab government and Lockheed Martin would ink a MoU in this regard," a spokesman said here Friday.

Punjab Non-Conventional Energy minister Bikram Singh Majithia and a three-member team from Lockheed Martin comprising CEO Phil Shaw, Chief Innovation Officer Tushar Shah and Regional Director Jagmohan Singh, along with senior Punjab officials, decided this at a meeting here.

Exploding airbags?

TAKATA Corporation is a Japanese based automotive parts company with production facilities on four continents.

Founded in 1933 in Shiga Japan, in the early 1950s it began developing car seat belts then child restraint systems and, by 1988, airbags.

As of 2014, Takata airbags are in 20 percent of the vehicles manufactured worldwide by many of the major automotive manufacturers.

Recently, the history of Takata airbags has been expanded by The New York Times newspaper (http://www.nytimes.co m/2014/09/12/business/a ir-bag-flaw-long-knownl e d - t o recalls.html?_r=1) to include a series of interconnected timelines involving a number of its automotive manufacturer customers and US federal regulatory investigators.

The “Honda” timeline, for example, as related by the above newspa-

per: (Note – these reports suggesting malfunction appear to be allegations and not facts established by a court of law.) * 2004 – “An air bag exploded in a Honda Accord … in Alabama, shooting out metal fragments and injuring the car’s driver. … Honda and …[Takata] deemed it “an anomaly” and did not issue a recall or seek the involvement of federal safety regulators.” * 2007 – “Three additional ruptures [of Takata airbags were] reported to Honda ... Honda settled [each of these but] … did not issue a safety recall until late 2008, and then for only a small fraction — about 4,200 — of its vehicles… * April 2009 – “An air bag in J G’s Honda Civic, which was not among the recalled vehicles, exploded after a minor accident in Orlando, Fla. The air bag explosion sent a two-inch piece of shrapnel flying. When highway troopers found Ms. G, then 26, with blood gushing from a gash in her neck, they were baffled by the extent of her injuries. At Honda, engineers soon linked the accident to the previous ruptures.”

* May 2009 – “A P , 18, was killed in Midwest City, Okla., when the air bag in her 2001 Honda Accord exploded out of her steering wheel after a minor crash. … Honda filed only the required early warning reports on these incidents, which do not allow for specifics about the ruptures.” * November 2009 – “Honda’s air bag problems caught the attention of federal regulators, … But the agency closed its inquiry after only six months, saying there was “insufficient information” to suggest [failure] to take timely action. * December 2009 – “A Honda Accord driven by G R, 33, hit a mail truck in Richmond, Va. Her air bag exploded, propelling shrapnel into her neck and chest, and she bled to death in front of her three children…” * April 2010 – “…A 2001 Honda Civic driven by 24-year-old K W exploded as she was stopped at a traffic light in Morrow, Ga. Metal shards punctured her neck, causing profuse bleeding, strokes and seizures… .” * December 2011 – “Honda reported its death and injury tallies

to regulators only in a confidential submission … when it issued its fifth recall for the rupture defect. * June 2014 – “A lowspeed accident involving a 2005 Honda Accord in

Los Angeles caused the car’s driver air bag “to ‘detonate,’ sending hot metal and plastic shrapnel into the cabin…

Honda has since expanded its recall to include vehicles regis-

tered in California.”

The truth of the matter regarding malfunction remains to be seen.

Anyone who remembers the “runaway Audi” hysteria may remain cautious.
